Their products are beautifully displayed and packaged. Samples on display so can see what items are like. Prices vary. Sold in sets (would be good as gifts) and individual packs (for tasting; good for me bec. I would like to try different ones). Bought a choc mikasa $5 and kingyo $6.60 (white grape jelly; was just ok). It was also the last day for the winning confectionary art which will be returned to Japan the next day. K. Minamoto specializes in Japanese wagashi (sweets made with mochi, bean paste, fruit, etc.) all individually wrapped in small packages. For my first introduction to wagashi, I visited their store when they were offering samples with tea tasting. Chocolate Dorayaki (chocolate ganache cream filling sandwiched between chocolate pancake) paired with roasted tea and Sakuragoromo (sweet red bean paste, Mochi rice cake and edible cherry blossom leaf covered with Japanese style crepe) paired with green tea. Each one cost $5-6.50ish. They have huge display cases with tons of varieties, but since I'm new to wagashi I would have also loved to see the treats displayed instead of relying on photos with descriptions. Their team is professionally dressed in branded uniforms and graciously ready to assist. I definitely need to dive deeper into this delicious world of Japanese delights. Looking at their menu I would love to try tosenka (whole rich white peach covered with juicy jelly, 1 piece $29), kurogoma daifuku (Black sesame paste wrapped with rice cake and black sesame seeds, $$4.70 1 piece), white peach mochi (19.80, 8 pieces) and many of their cakes!! The flagship store of Japanese sweets brand K Minamoto specializes in their flavored mochi and jellies. I've been a fan for many years after finding their white peach mochi for the first time in the Tokyo airport, which is packaged really cutely like little peaches in a tray. The staff are very polite and can help you find what you're looking for. There is a huge selection, you can find any type of fresh gift of either fruit or matcha flavors ranging from small gift size to luxury food gifts to give your boss, and they also have a few bottled teas for purchase if you find yourself thirsty while walking. I ended up getting the white peach mochi again! Such a classic, consistent, and fresh taste, and was a perfect gift for my family. read more

Beautiful store with many nice Japanese treats. It's pretty pricey though. I tried five items and I most enjoyed the chocolate dorayaki and the matcha cupcake. The cheese blueberry ball and the cheese cream cookie was not my favorite. The matcha cream cookie was ok. read more

None of it is quite as good as what we had in Japan, but that seems to be expected since it's brought from Japan and therefore not quite as fresh. It's all still tasty and beautiful. This store was a fun stop to make to get some refreshment during the July heat. Walking around NYC in need of AC and water, I was pleasantly surprised that this place advertised cold treats, so I walked in, purchased a refrigerated muscat grape-flavored jelly snack and a bottle of Japanese green tea, and called it a day. The summer theme was alive here, so there were lots of goldfish imagery. There are a lot of unique goods here that would make unique gifts. I've passed by this shop multiple times but never got the chance to go in until now due to my curiosity and cravings for the confectionery I had in Japan. They have quite the selection of sweets available individually or as gift sets. I tried the kurogoma daifuku (black sesame mochi), ayashirabe matcha (matcha with white bean), and original ayashirabe (white bean cake). It wasn't too sweet which I liked. It'd be great to give out as gifts or for your own enjoyment. The sweets were expensive but the taste and quality made up for it. I'd definitely come back to try the other types of wagashi. read more

I stopped in on a whim after walking past the store and it was such a cute shop! I tried the strawberry mochi and bought the cold mango sherbet (which were both delicious and just enough sweetness)! While the treats in here were definitely on the expensive side, it was worth it for the quality you get! read more

Side note: Traditional expensive Japanese sweets/wagashi shop. Their wafers/senbei and mochi are the best with my preference being the matcha senbei. Also, part of this review is an edit from their old location in the 50s and further over on the east side. Anyway, I was here pretty recently getting a tiny snack prior to eating at a French spot. I used to go to their other location, albeit rarely due to the price point, having tried a bunch of their smaller snacks and also having bought a larger assortment once for a friend. I prefer this location in terms of looks, as there is a nice display in front and I found the previous place a little bit too crowded. This time I had the Kinkan Daifuku which is listed as, "a whole kumquat (small orange citrus) wrapped with sweet white bean paste and rice cake." The word kinkan refers to said kumquat and it cost $4.50 plus tax and was delicious. As per most wagashi, it was barely sweetened being on the slightly bitter end from the citrus with most of the sweetness coming from the white bean paste/shiroan. As per most of their excellent rice cakes, the texture was pillowy soft and I would recommend it being similarly flavored to their excellent mochi. Otherwise as noted prior, my preference in terms of price and flavor is their Matcha Senbei, or green tea wafers stuffed with green tea creme. These are outstanding with a wonderful mouth feel and a bitter but still pleasant aftertaste. The Sakura Senbei by comparison isn't as good with the flavor being a bit too light but it still has a good texture. Their Mochi is outstanding though tiny for the price and they have given me samples of said treat for buying things such as their mango and matcha variants (which were both excellent.) The Sakura Mochi had a nice pleasant sourness from the cherry blossom leaf and sweetness from anko/red bean with a bit of saltiness from the pickled blossom on top. Slightly more sweet is the Sakuragoromo which might be their prettiest looking treat also with anko and mochi. Rounding out the cherry blossom flavored things would be the Ohkashigure which I wouldn't recommend this much as the steamed cake didn't have as much sakura flavor by comparison and as noted, the alright sakura senbei. Also solid are their Ayashirabe, a cake either stuffed with white bean or better, a mix of white bean and matcha. Their main specialty is fruit jellies (more specifically whole fruits or parts of fruits in jelly) such as the Tosenka though I find these to be a bit too expensive and not worth it outside of their look. I'm also not the hugest fan due to texture and as the flavor is too light of their Tsyua; their version of dorayaki; a pancake with red bean inside. If you don't mind the milder flavors of Japanese treats and want to try some very fancy takes on Japanese treats, stop here. It's expensive but it's exported Japanese sweets designed as gifts so of course it's expensive. Same rating as their old spot/4.5. read more

I visit K Minamoto every few weeks to see what they got that is new, especially since some seasonal items are available only once a year like Sakuranbo - Cherry in Jelly. this shop is not cheap but they have one of a kind hard to get items. The gift boxes make a perfect gift to some who like Japanese desserts and let people know how special they are to you because you made the extra effort. And of course you need to treat yourself to a good treat sometimes don't you? read more

Really overpriced items. Tasty but one note. I was really excited and spent around $200 with a variety of items. They were all "not too sweet" and had the essence of what was advertised, e.g the cherry kochi has a cherry inside with a nice stem. The red bean pancake had red bean. We loved the Japanese desserts on our trips to Japan, so it's always nice to find a traditional Japanese dessert maker selling them fresh in the US. The desserts are not as sweet as American ones, using natural ingredients like chestnuts, red beans, peaches, and matcha, and have wonderful textures and appearances. We picked up a a variety to enjoy the next day, and were given a brief instruction of how long the various pieces will last. The ones that were taken from the freezer are only good for around 24 hours. read more

There are two food retail stores that are a must for me this one and La Maison du Chocolate which happens to be right around the corner! I have been going to this store for over 28 years. First it was Mitsuwa is where I had found them through a Japanese friend in NJ. She introduced me and I always go to this store and there is one in LA too. I love the matcha waffle like cookies they look like waffles but they are the best cookie in the world and especially combine it with tea - amazing!! Ever want a break from the stresses of life - buy a cookie and get ur self some good tea. Close your eyes as you bite in and savor the crunchy cookie with a perfect amount of filling and then chew it slowly before swallowing it. Then take a súp of your favorite tea then breathe and you should be relaxed by now!! Talk about feeling relax and luxurious!! Yiu are there with this combination!! I also love their very crispy crackers!! My favorite is the green packaging one!! Also their white peach gelatin is super duper AWESOME!! They are only available at certain times of the year!!
