Lady Wong is located in Urban Hawker. Urban Hawker is an authentic Singapore street food center located in the heart of New York City and it is the first of its kind in the United States to feature stalls from the UNESCO hawker centers of Singapore. The vendors represent essential cuisines like Malay, Peranakan, Chinese, Indian, Southeast Asian, and Asian-style Western favorites. The first time I went to Urban Hawker was in December 2022, so I was very happy to be back again. I went to Lady Wong for some pastries. There are two display cases of beautiful Asian desserts. There were so many great choices and all the desserts look so pretty. I got the Mango Mousse Sticky Rice ($10.58), Pandan Panna Cotta Cup ($8.48), and Rose Kuih ($3.98). The Mango Mousse Sticky Rice tart was absolutely delightful and I savored every single bit. The crisp tart shell holds a layer of coconut sticky rice, topped with luscious whipped coconut cream and smooth mango mousse and finished with a sprinkle of toasted coconut for an added crunch. Each bite had a refreshing balance of creamy, fruity, and nutty flavors. The Pandan Panna Cotta Cup has a top layer of a silky layer of fragrant pandan panna cotta and the bottom has a light and creamy coconut mousse. A crunchy gula melaka (palm sugar) coconut crumble adds delightful texture, while a drizzle of rich gula melaka (palm sugar) syrup provides a sweet, caramel-like finish. The Rose Kuih is a beautiful layered dessert that offers the perfect balance of smooth, creamy, and is a fun-to-eat treat. I was looking for a Lady M alternative, and this was a good choice. Lady Wong is an Asian flavor inspired dessert shop that also introduces hard-to-find items in NYC, like Kuih or Pandan cakes. The shop is located in a food hall and is not large. If you are looking for something specific, I recommend coming early to secure your items. I ordered the Black Sesame Passion Fruit, Assorted Kuih, and a slice of the Orange Mille Crepe Cake. Nothing was too sweet, but incredibly rich and beautifully presented. The crepe cake was just as good as the renowned Lady M. The staff was patient and friendly. If you are looking to expand your palate, look no further. read more

All cakes were 10/10. I tried the mango stick rice, rose/lychee, and the strawberry guava. All were moist and not too sweet. Light, airy, moist-- the frosting is whipped cream like most Asian bakery cakes! Each cake is about $10-$12 about 3-4 bites each. On the pricier end for desserts but each one is a piece of art. I came back and this time ordered the matcha pandan tart and chestnut mille crepe cake. Everything slaps, as always. You can't really go wrong here, but those two were both phenomenal - light, amazing texture, not overly sweet. The matcha pandan is very matcha-forward (so don't get it if you don't like matcha flavor / slightly matcha caffeinated flavor). The ratio of tart to crust is spectacular. The mille crepe cake is amazing especially if you've never had crepe cake. Loved the chestnuts on top, and the chestnut flavor was nutty and delightful. Not sure if it's because we came in a bit late (around 8pm), so that the shop didn't really have much left. It was a very small shop within a larger mall, with just one single small display-cabinet, so I suspect there might not be many options even if we came in earlier. We got what was left, which was a mango sticky rice cake. The sticky rice layer underneath did have a pleasant, subtle aroma, but the entire dessert was just too sweet. And the mango taste felt like too strong of an artifitual flavoring that I didn't quite enjoy. It's a bit dissapointing, as I've heard good things, but the result didn't quite match. Since it's late, and not many people were there at all (actually the only occupied table was me and my friend), it's relatively quiet. Going after the holidays definitely helped since the crowds were gone and there was plenty of seating. We picked up a layered chestnut cake and a selection of their colorful pandan cakes. I went in not really knowing what pandan even was but the presentation alone made them hard to resist. I believe I had the coconut rose along with another flavor I cannot remember but if you like coconut forward desserts these are outstanding. Light fragrant and not overly sweet. Another delicious food stop in Midtown - we ordered the black sesame passionfruit entremet cake, which was very good and I understand why it's won praise. If Urban Hawker was a musical, then Lady Wong would play a main lead. She's one character that I'm glad I can see often, get to know more closely, and admire her captivating singing voice. Last week I picked up a mango coconut tapioca rice pudding $8.98, a piece of each of these kuihs: 1) talam jawa $2.98 palm sugar and pandan flavored, 2) baked pandan kuih topped with sesame $3.98, 3) cassava $1.98 the simplest yet prob my top two favorite in terms of flavor. As I've mentioned before, their selection of kuih is terrific, with authentic flavors and well-balanced level of sweetness (ie not too sweet) and a bouncy/jiggly consistency. The mangos in the rice pudding were less ripe than ideal though I wasn't mad about it considering it's the middle of winter right now. Tucked away in the Urban Hawker food court, we arrived at this small booth after finding our other dessert options full on Thanksgiving weekend. They were out of a lot of the more popular options as it was pretty late in the evening. I've had kuih before but never tried Lady Wong, so we asked the cashier for recommendations, but the cashier seemed reluctant to give any. So we grabbed whatever looked pretty good and sat down in a quiet corner of the food hall. The ube mousse dome pastry looked so pristine and beautiful with its lush purple color and the gold fleck on the top. Unfortunately, though it was ube flavored, I didn't think it offered anything special than any other mousse French desserts that the city has to offer. It was that artificial ube flavor and not that interesting. The kuih is what Lady Wong is actually good for. The rosewater flavor was my favorite, though I do find the floral flavor is a little too much for some. The pandan one was nice and chewy, sweet but not too sweet, the most profound indicator of what makes a good Asian dessert. This place has really unique desserts that are absolutely delicious. I ordered panna cottas, and an assortment of desserts for AANHPI month. All the desserts are phenomenal. The panna cottas were a hit and came with a little syrup to pour over and crunchy coconut toppings. The party kuih tier was unique and although it's definitely not a conventional choice, it was a fun opportunity to try something different. But my personal favorite is the baked ube rice cake. This is my first time trying Lady Wong so I decided to splurge and try a variety of items, although it was mainly their mille crepes as some of the items they were already sold out for the day. Fair warning, these pastries are expensive. I essentially got one of each of what they had available for the Mille Crepe, which they had the Matcha Pandan Mille Crepe ($10), Mont Blanc Chestnut Mille Crepe ($12), and Uji Matcha Red Bean Mille Crepe ($10). The Mont Blanc Chestnut Mille Crepe was the most unique tasting one, I think because of the chestnut taste, may not be liked by everyone. The Matcha Pandan Mille Crepe was the most plain one, while the Uji Matcha Red Bean Mille Crepe had a nice multi flavor with the red bean and matcha. I'll probably stick with Lady M with the Mille Crepes. The one item I got that was not a Mille Crepe was the Ube Blackberry ($9.50). This tiny expensive pastry is aesthetically pleasing and also tastes really good. You have an ube shell with an ube cream, then there's that citrusy blackberry jam followed by a cake. If you slice the cake just right, you can get a nice profile and taste all of these at once, although the blackberry will sharply overpower the rest. read more
