That is why, for real, I have been getting my hair cut at Coop Hair Styling and Kevin for over 12 years. Yes, it's true! I found this place when I was a student at MIT, and have continued a ritual commute to MIT just to get my hair cut there. Only on a few occasions like a big travel month when I had to get my hair cut elsewhere, and those jobs were never satisfactory, because how many other hair stylers are as experienced with asian hair? Very, very few in the Boston area, surprisingly. He cuts hair for all ethnic backgrounds, but I stick with Kevin because of my asian hair. This place is literally a "hidden gem". Coop Hairstyling is located on the lower level off the Coop Bookstore (you will need to take the escalator in the back area off the bookstore to get down to the lower level). I worked in Kendall Square for several years and stumbled across Coop Hairstyling and I have had several of the staff cut my hair. When my company left Cambridge, I spent a year trying other places to cut my hair and failed to find any place as good as Coop Hairstyling. So I now take time off from work every few weeks and drive to Kendall from the South Shore to have the guys from Coop Hairstyling cut my hair the way I want it. In the 5+ years they have been cutting my hair, I have not had a bad cut or experience with them. They have been very accommodating and friendly when it comes to making appointments and have even helped me out when I had to do the occasional walk-in without an appointment. I have been going here every couple of months for the past two years. I first started going here after trying a few other places around MIT that just did not cut my hair the way I asked them to, and was referred here by a friend. My first time Kevin cut my hair exactly the way I asked and since then, he has always remembered the way I like it cut. Kevin is a really great guy. And he runs a tight ship. Since I started going there he has had a few other employees working for him. A couple weren't so great and he noticed that his customers weren't getting quality hair cuts, so he finds someone else for the job. I finally found Kevin at Coop Hair Styling after trying several other places around Cambridge. I will never go anywhere else! Kevin is a true professional. I typically go for a cut ever 4-6 weeks. My haircut looks great from the minute Kevin cuts it all the way until the next time I see him. Kevin pays great attention to detail and uses both clippers and scissors. He can definitely cut hair fast if you need it done but he is always willing to take the time to do it best. If I call ahead I can almost always get an appointment the same day because Kevin will find a way to fit me in. He is also located directly next to the Kendall Square T stop. I been getting my hair cut by Kevin at Coop Hair Styling for about two years now (student) and I could not be happier. Men's haircut is $17 which might be a bit more than you're used to, but trust me, it is well worth it. Haven't had a bad haircut yet. Appointments are easily made over the phone and they are always running on time. Not to mention that it is conveniently located in the Kendal Square Coop! (now in the lower level) One more thing that I should add. I am on Ballroom Dancing team at MIT and Kevin cuts a very good short and traditional men's haircut. I've been using yelp for several years, and this was the local establishment that finally compelled me to create an account and write a review. Kevin gives, bar none, the best haircut in town for an insanely great price. I was a graduate student at MIT for two years, and before I found Coop Hair Styling, I had some BAD haircuts. Supercuts, other local barbers, you name it. Nothing in the area can quite measure up to the cut you're going to get here. Kevin is a busy guy, but you seem to always be able to get an appointment. 25 minutes and some great conversation later, you're trimmed up and looking sharp. I've been bouncing between different barbershops in Cambridge for several years now, never fully satisfied with the end result. Upon the recommendation of a few friends I finally checked out the Coop Hair Styling, which is found at the bottom floor of the MIT Coop Bookstore. The place is almost always booked, so you have to schedule an appointment with them over the phone. I got a spot on Tuesday morning to get my haircut from Kevin, and I must say I am extremely pleased with the end results. After moving to the area for school, I was jumping around the area for a Barber. Only found Coop Hairstyling by word of mouth from another student. Been coming back every 2 weeks since then. Ronnie has a great attention to detail and gives me a perfect haircut every time. He figured out what makes me look my best and he remembers exactly how to cut it without needing any further input from me. I loved going to this place when I lived in Boston! All super great people who are efficient yet personal to converse with (but not too much!), extremely fair price (~$20 with tip), and excellent location near the red line T. Perfect if you live or work at MIT or anywhere in Kendall Square. Open til 6 so if you're off work at 5 you still have time to drop in. They've even stayed late for me to squeeze me in. My father used to give me a haircut for the last 4 years and Justin gave me exactly the same haircut after I showed him a picture of how I wanted it. I newly discovered coop when i was inside the bookstore. I was surprised and delighted to find the very nice Asian lady Julia, who styled my hair before when she was working at a different location on MIT campus. I have long, life-less, fine hair. The barbor Julia is a very good professional barbor. Her hands are nimble. And she usually can cut my hair within 20 minutes.
