I've had my hair cut by Julia twice now and although the cuts turned out decently in the end, the experience here is kind of unsettling. After washing my hair, Julia used a towel to dry me off that smelled like it hadn't been washed since the place opened. She keeps her clippers and such in a drawer that is lined with hair, and I haven't seen a trace of barbicide in her workspace. Although she has been more than willing to tailor the haircut to my requests, I felt a lack of attention to detail manifested in sloppily clipped edges and some unevenness. I have been going to Kevin for about 14 years now and have recommended him to a number of people, all of whom are now faithful customers. Strange location (MIT COOP in Kendall Square) but great haircut. On rare occasions, I have had to get my hair cut elsewhere and have paid 4x what he charges only to get a inferior haircut. I've bounced from one barber shop to another in the Cambridge area for years and I think I've finally found "the one". Kevin has the rare combination of being efficient while still paying attention to the small details. They do take appointments but I've been mostly successful walking in the hour before they close. I just received my first haircut from Kevin at Coop Hair Styling and am thrilled to have found a truly quality barber at such an affordable price in Boston. I will definitely be coming back. Pros: - He takes appointments, so you don't waste time waiting around or making the trip only to discover that the wait is too long. - He listens to what you want and does just that. - He's able to make friendly and comfortable conversation without it feeling forced. - The prices are very reasonable ($17 for a men's cut). - He accepts credit and debit cards. - The location is super convenient, especially if you're a student or faculty at MIT. It's steps away from the Kendall T Stop. Cons: - He gets interrupted often by phone calls from customers trying to make appointments. His popularity also means he's a good barber though, so I can easily overlook this. - He doesn't cut kids' hair. I would love to be able to bring my children here, but I understand why he doesn't want to go down that road. Kevin is the reason I signed up for Yelp. I went to him for two years while at MIT, got a job outside of the city, tried to find different barbers, and have now returned because I was so unsatisfied with all the others. I am actually a bit conflicted about writing this review because I do not want him to get too busy!!! haha Kevin is a very attentive, skilled, and friendly barber. What really separates Coop Hair Styling isn't how fancy the shop looks, how avant-garde the stylists wardrobe is, or what fancy products they push on you, but Kevin's incredible attention to detail, patience, professionalism and thoroughness. This place is a hidden gem: affordable yet excellent quality. I have short hair that needs a trim every 2-3 months or so, but it's so expensive to go to a typical salon that often. The COOP is my go-to place and I highly recommend it! Lee handles the women's cuts, and I've been going to him for about a year. He's extremely talented and meticulous with a great eye for detail. This is the barber shop that I've been waiting my whole life to find. I've always had trouble with getting my haircut, and have never been able to keep a regular barber. I spent 12 years in NYC before moving to Cambridge and never was able to get the same quality haircut twice. Since moving to Cambridge, though, I tried a couple different places before I found Coop and I'm glad that I found them! Best haircut in 30 years (and that's with hairdressers in the family). Quick service, extremely accommodating (I came in 5 minutes before closing my first visit and they still took me), affordable, and a really quality haircut. The guy spent about 10 mins on my cut. On top, he used the type of scissors that don't cut every hair (I think that's by design, otherwise they were just super dull). So I ended up with lots of stray long hairs... I won't be going back. read more

They made me wait 20 minutes, and when I complained about the wait time, they told me "to go somewhere else if I prefer." I find this disorganized, unprofessional, and disrespectful of the customer.
