So we show up at 6pm ready for a special night and are told it's going to be a two hour wait... That ain't going to happen. So Kabuki won't take my reservation but will tell me to wait 2 hours? Sorry, but it is far from being so good that I'll make my family wait 2 hours after the restaurant refused my reservation. I'm from San Diego and was passing through Amarillo and stayed in a hotel next door. I was craving sushi and decided to give it a try having low expectations. From the looks of the building's exterior I was not expecting much. But once inside I felt like I was on a ride at Disneyland. The boat with rain falling from the ceiling was unexpected. We had a short stay in Amarillo on our way to Colorado... we chose to eat here for something different than we are used to... not realizing it was a hibachi grill. The food was so yummy!!! The service was also great! There is a wait to be seated and a wait for the food to be prepared, so don't go here if you're in a hurry. I understand that places are understaffed... but that's where management should step up and help them. A waitress sat our rather large group at 2 tables, the manger came and reseated us due to her saying the hibachi grills did not get hot enough. A little while later she sat a bigger group of hockey players at 4 tables including the two that supposedly didn't get hot enough. I would assume that group called ahead and she knew it would be more revenue for the establishment. I call that lying and opportunistic. The service was fair and the chef was entertaining. When it came time to pay our bill, it took about 20 minutes. I paid with cash and part of the bill included a 25% gratuity because of the size of our group. I did not receive my full amount back. They only gave back bills, no coinage. I felt that since the gratuity was included in the bill, I wanted the full amount back to me. I questioned the server, but it made no difference. I would advise people to pay with a card of some sort, not cash. The establishment steals from you with the cash payments. This is a reflection on the leadership as they set the rules. I got the chicken which was about $14.99 but then they added $3.95 for fried rice without asking you if you wanted any. It was salty and not quite worth the wait or price. I love this restaurant especially being from Hawai'i. This reminds me of home. Excellent food and service, Japanese style restaurant. It's a must to sit at the grill area if it's your first time here. It's an experience you will never forget. It's dinner and a show. The wait is about 45 minutes usually but it is worth it for the experience. They have seating arrangements if you don't want the grill experience but why would you want to do that, lol. I was highly impressed when I walked through the doors of Kabuki Romanza. It has a modern, inviting, fun feel to it. Kabuki is huge with a variety of dining areas. One could take in the Texas heat on the beautiful outdoor area, be entertained by a chef at a hibachi table, be teased at the sushi bar, dine at a more intimate table setting or lush it up at the bar. I chose the sushi bar and was quickly greeted by both sushi chefs and promptly handed a cucumber & crab salad. The menu is vast and consists of fairly creative dishes. I ordered a No-name roll which the chef began to tease me, making it into sort of a knock knock joke. He toyed with other customers throughout the evening and had everyone in ear shot laughing. The No-name roll had yellow tuna (seared and lightly peppered), green onion with spicy tuna on top with a bit of what tasted like ponzu sauce. The roll was great but was not expecting tempura which I try to avoid. They are big on martinis and other signature cocktails but also have a nice beer, sake and wine menu. Decent Food, But Had Better Took our Nephew to dinner as he wanted Japanese. Was not very busy and we were told there would be a 30-45 minute wait for a teppanyaki fare cooking table to fill up. But could seat us at a regular table for service. We didn't want the wait so took a small table next to the small flowing water. Then the soup & salad. My spouses cooked Salmon Steak Dinner was served but not the selection of Sushi for me or our nephew. Didn't understand as the sushi was cold and should have been ready first. After about 15 minutes we got our sushi which was just ok. The Salmon Dinner was very tasty. Portions were decent for the Salmon and sushi but the starters were very small for the price. Absolute worst experience I've had at a restaurant. Was told 20 minutes for seating. Waited almost 45. Didn't even get to order drinks until another 30 minutes after, and then 15 or so after until they even got to the table. Ordered chicken and steak (hibachi), and said medium rare when asked how I wanted the steak. An hour later, they finally showed up to cook, then we had to wait until it was actually cooked. Kabuki Romanza is a Japanese steakhouse with a boat-in-the-rain theme. There is a rainshower once an hour and it's ok- but confusing if you aren't expecting it. There's a little bridge you walk across to get to the 'boat' which is just a frame around the center part of the restaurant. I like it- it has a different style and theme from any other japanese restaurant I have encountered. The price is a bit high, but you DO get alot of food. I think it is worth the price if you take the rest to go. I have had sushi here and it's never been anything special. It's ok, but less than memorable. More often that not, our waiter has been ok and the cooks will usually put on a good show, but not always. The impression I get is that they are not crazy about their job and just want to get people in, feed them and get them back out again. I have never had a long wait here, they are good at accomodating people. The restaurant is clean, and so are the bathrooms. Sure, its worth it to come here once, but whether or not you come back will depend on what you expect of Japanese restaurants. We usually come once a year or so. read more

You can order from the "grill," which they can do table side, or sushi bar. Prices started pretty reasonable: grilled dinner w/ soup, salad, grilled veggies and chicken just $13.95; $15.95 for steak (Sukiyaki), but goes up to $30+ for combos or even $41.95 for the filet mignon/lobster combo (the most expensive on the menu). The food was all right; the grill was way too salty and main flavor was just soy sauce I did like the dressing on the (iceburg) salad, though. Drinks were pretty reasonable, wines and cocktails starting at $7. Bottom line, I'd come back w/ the kids for the "fun" factor, but don't think I'd come back for the food. read more

Took my son in law here because I heard such great things about it. When we got there the drinks we ordered were watered down for 30$. The sushi bar was closed. ,which was disappointing ( one of the reasons we went there ) ended up at tapas table where the waitress stood across the table and took our order. ( which ended up completely wrong she forgot half my order brought me wrong orders we let them know it was my son in laws b day in the beginning. At the end they didn't recognize his b day we had to ask them brought him a dry brownie with a candle and just threw it at him. Was NOT a place I'll ever go back to especially for a b day unless your 13 years old or less. Tempura wasn't great. Kind of soggy. For close to 200$ for 3 people. There's a boat in the middle of the restaurant complete with waterfall shows. Not quite Vegas but close enough when it comes to Amarillo, TX. The closest ocean is about 580 miles away but - again - that's okay because everything is flown in these days. I mean, the Texas panhandle is known more for its cattle than it is for seafood. I suppose that's why Kabuki is more of a steakhouse than it is a sushi house. In terms of steakhouses, get ready for a dinner and show on par with Benihana's. Expect to be dazzled with flaming volcanos and flying shrimp tail. In terms of sushi, it's not half-bad. I strongly recommend the Romanza Roll, which uses a thin sheet of cucumber instead of seaweed. Watching the sushi chef peel off the sheer layer is quite a show in-and-of-itself. Fish isn't half bad but I wasn't a fan of the scallops (soggy and bland). 3 Stars - Maybe I'm skeptical about Amarillo and what this city has to offer. This is the one place my family always eats at no matter what when we visit Amarillo. I'm from NJ and have eaten prime sushi in many different parts of the country (NY, NJ, CT, FL, CA, Atlanta, Louisiana, Seattle, KS, MS, and Hawaii to name a few). The sushi/sashimi that I've eaten here is excellent and comparable to some of the really good places I've eaten it. Hawaii by far had the best sushi/sashimi. I've never had a piece of sushi that did not taste good since I've been coming here. I have no idea what the hibachi is like here since we always sit at the sushi bar and eat only sushi, sashimi, and rolls. Regarding the service, my only complaint is that depending upon who is working up front they may or may not have a clue as to how to seat guests. 100% of the time if there is a waiting list it's for the hibachi and not the sushi bar. There were 2 occasions during which the sushi bar had vacant seating and the hostess gave us a buzzer and tried to make us wait along with the rest of the guests waiting on hibachi tables. Lucky for me I know most of the guys behind the sushi bar and I asked them what the deal was with having to wait for seating when there were multiple seats open. Both times they told me to just sit down and forget about waiting for the buzzer. It always pays to know someone! read more

Walking up to the restaurant it looked like a typical restaurant but as soon as we walked through the double doors we were transported onto a ship and experienced an indoor thunderstorm. Anthony our server was fantastic and recommended the lasagna sushi roll which will become your favorite roll if you ever try it! They took care of us, were able to sit all 17 of us together plus parents. The food was delicious and the quality for the price you can't beat. We came in and they said it would be able a 20 minute wait (we asked for a grill table). The pager goes off and they take us back to a table..but it was a sushi table. She told us it would only be a couple more minutes. Those minutes turned into 15 min as we watched multiple families get seated before us (even though they came in after us). I talk to the manager and he reassures me that we will be seated in no time...6 minutes later we were finally seated. My sister orders the combination veggie tempura. This comes out and there is no shrimp...they ask the server about it and she tells them they were on the plate and she saw them...basically calling my sister a liar. They correct it...but by that time it was too late as we were already eating our food. When the guy got done making our food which took forever!!!! The food was nasty!!!! We asked for yum yum sauce which was .99... it seriously tasted like mayo!!! The ginger sauce was terrible. The food was SO SO dry and had no flavor!!! We will NEVER go back to this place.
