    Chicken breast

We were genuinely excited to try this place after seeing it all over Instagram -- the food looked amazing, and we figured Eid would be the perfect time for a family outing. There were only five of us, and we showed up around 10:45 PM -- yes, it was a bit late, but still well over an hour before closing. That should've been plenty of time for a normal dining experience. Instead, what we got was just... a mess. From the start, things went downhill. We were craving the lamb shank, a qorma, and a few grilled meat options. The server said they were out of kofta and lamb shank but would go check to be sure. Fair enough. When she returned, we placed our order: chicken, lamb chops, chapli kabab, lamb tikka, and lamb qorma. Then she came back -- again -- and suddenly half our order was no longer available. Now, only the qorma, chicken, and lamb chops were supposedly available. On top of that, they didn't even have the Kabuli topping. Already frustrated, we adjusted our order again. And guess what? A little while later, she returns to say they're also out of qorma. At this point, we're wondering: what did she even check the first time? Why was this all being revealed to us in frustrating, slow-motion waves? We finally settled on bolani kachalu, mantu (which we ordered as appetizers), chicken, lamb chops, and fish. When we asked about drinks, she said they were out of mocktails and only had soda and water. A little disappointing, but we tried to roll with it. Then the food started arriving -- and with it, a whole new round of letdowns. The salad was basic, and the sauces were in tiny bowls that were laughably small for a table of five. We had to keep asking for refills, and it took forever each time. Then came the bread: it was cold, stiff, and dry. Not even room temperature -- like it had been sitting out for hours. Naturally, we asked if they could warm it up. The server took it back, and then disappeared. A long while passed. No bread. We finally asked if it had been forgotten, and she said, "No, it's being warmed -- it just takes time." Um... okay? Are we slow-roasting this naan or what? Eventually, she brought the bread back -- and it was still cold. Not even kind of warm. Not toasted. Not soft. Just sad, cold, chewy bread again. It was honestly laughable at that point -- like a restaurant prank show. As for the rest of the meal: the bolani was flavorless and doughy, the potato filling clearly old -- dry, crumbly, and lacking any herbs or seasoning. The mantu we ordered as appetizers never showed up. When we reminded the server during the main course, she said she'd bring it. Spoiler: she didn't. When we were literally leaving, we mentioned it to the owner, who handed us a cold box of mantu in a foil takeaway container. No garnish, no sauce, no apology -- just vibes. Most of the food was meh at best. The chicken was the one highlight -- tender and juicy. But everything else? Bland. Massive portions of plain rice, barely any meat. And the fish? Spoiled. We had to send it back. Not even slightly questionable -- it smelled and tasted off, and that's just unacceptable. And then, the cherry on top: while we were eating, we saw another table getting mocktails. The same mocktails we were explicitly told were not available. We asked the owner why we were told they were out -- and her response? "Oh, maybe we were busy then." First of all -- you weren't. When we arrived, there were maybe 2 or 3 other tables occupied. It wasn't some dinner rush chaos. So that excuse made zero sense. How does being "busy" explain straight-up lying to a customer about what's available on your menu? Between the chaotic service, the cold stale bread situation, the missing items, and the general weird energy of being fed partial truths all night, it was just an incredibly frustrating and disappointing experience. Save yourself the trouble and just go to Sami's. At least there, when you order food, they actually bring it -- and it's warm. Wild concept.

Stopped in for dumplings on my walk thru Astoria on a Sunday afternoon! My friends and I shared the mantu & leek dumplings -- delicious, thin dumpling wrappers, well dressed in savory lentil and garlic sauces, and filled with seasoned beef. Service was quick and friendly, restaurant was clean&well lit, and music added to the ambiance. Yummy watermelon lemonade as well!

The best Afghan restaurant we've tried in NYC (and we've tried them all). Really authentic, no shortcuts taken (i.e., bolani is homemade) and good family style options. Really appreciated the spices and flavors of the kabobs, and the mantu hit the spot. Highly recommend if you're looking for a good, hearty, authentic meal! Service was top notch as well.

Worst experience ever! Made reservation @2 pm for 7pm reservation was told to come 6:30 so can get food out by 7:15, so got there 6:30 didn't get seating until 6:45 and once got a seating our high chair was being pushed by the manager aside. We informed them we are fasting they said would accommodate something but didn't get anything to start with. 7:24 we got bowls of salad without sauces, no bread, got one Chapli kabab platter ( requested brown rice for white instead) Then received borani without anything to have it with. We were a group of 4 and one child, then received the mixed platter which was good. We requested lamb shanks we're told they ran out of it but twenty minutes later table besides us got two orders of it. We asked for lamb chop with brown rice and had plastic in it, told the manager and he said it's from the rice bag. The guest we invited were surprised and our appetizer mix app came at the end and didn't have what it says on the menu. And we order hummus and mantu didn't bring it after being there 2 hours so decided to ask them to cancel it. They come with one plate of mantu with only 4 pieces at the end saying it's on the house. Experience was 0 Food was 50% Ambiance 50% Price was 80% understandable Advice go when there is no rush otherwise you will wait 2 hours for food And it'll come in intervals If you like bland food this is your place!

The meal was seamless from start to finish, the food, the service, the atmosphere was all great. Food came out quick and our waiter Kais took care of our group effotlessly. I really enjoyed my meal overall, I would say the apps and mains were both delicious but I would give an edge to the mains. The food: Borani Banjan- This was the highlight app for me with some freshly made Afghai Naan. Man this was so good and a must order. The eggplant was cooked perfectly. Bamia- This was like a stewed Okra and I loved this dish, the okra was cooked down but the flavor was so damn good. Mantu- This was a nice delicate dumpling, it was made well but because of the cumin I couldn't help think it reminded me of Tex Mex food. Aushuk- This was OK, it was kinda strange because there was this fermented flavor to it that kinda bothered me. Chicken Afghani Kabab- I am shocked to say this but the chicken was my favorite protein. It was perfection, it was perfectly juicy with a nice smokey outer char, this was amazing. Uzbeki Qabuli Pulao- This was a braised lamb shank and was no teeth required tender. It so incredibly delicate and so delicious. Salmon- Fat slabs of salmon cooked to perfection with a nice outer smokey char. So good. Lamb Kabab- This was fine but not as exciting as the above. The lamb was chewier than I was hoping but the flavor was nice. Beef Kofta- It was like a ground meat patty. It was ok, it was a bit chewy and a bit dry but it was alright. The two I want to try on my next visit is the shrimp and the lamb chops, can't wait for a second visit.

There are only a handful of Afghan spots in Astoria and I love that they're still around after 20+ years. We started off with their complimentary fresh Afghan bread which was warm, light, and fresh! It pairs well with their white, green, and red sauces. The Samosas were fresh, perfectly crispy, with seasoned ground beef. The filling was a bit sparse and definitely could've used a lot more to make it more satisfying. It's served with a white sauce that's different than the white sauce in the bottle, so I highly recommend dipping your samosas into that one. Now for the main - you can't go wrong with the Combo Kebab. The basmati rice is super fluffy, aromatic, and exceptionally seasoned. It even had a slight sweetness to it this time. I also love the addition of carrots and raisins which might sound weird to most people but adds a layer of crunch, sweetness, and balance to the meats. The meats were grilled fresh on charcoal and were tender and flavorful. Despite this, the pieces of chicken and meat were pretty small (especially compared to other Afghan restaurants) and if they do prefer to use smaller pieces, there should be at least 8 per order to balance out the ratio of rice. I had so much leftover rice with no protein to go with. Nonetheless, it was super satisfying. It also came with a complimentary salad which is was light and refreshing, especially with their white sauce. We ended with the Firny which was actually delicious! It's light, sweet, slightly floral, and you get the crunch from the pistachios. Great note to end on and great for sharing if you just want a quick sweet bite. All in all, although there's better Afghan restaurants in Queens, you will leave here pretty satisfied!

But if, like me, you prefer a low-key restaurant with delicious food where you can leisurely visit with friends -- Afghan Kebab House may be right up your alley. A bonus is it's BYOB without a corkage fee, unusual for NYC. Entrees are plated with rice and come with a simple yet satisfying salad. You're given a squirt bottle of the restaurant's mild white dressing, which I also used as a dipping sauce with my entree. My husband and I started with a shared appetizer: Aushak Ghoshti -- boiled dumplings with scallions and spices, topped with yogurt sauce and seasoned beef. (A Yelper's photograph piqued my interest. And yes -- it's good!) T ordered marinated lamb chops and I -- deviating from my usual chicken -- went with tandoori codfish kebab. Both recommended, though next time he'd get the lamb kebab. Notably, the restaurant accommodated my friend's strict dietary restrictions and prepared a chicken breast just as she asked. There are several options for dessert. Based on another Yelp review, we shared a generous slice of cake. Chocolatey, but not overly-so. This is a family operated restaurant with an an affable, hands-on owner. Prices are a few dollars higher than noted on their website, but not so high to deter customers. Yup. We'll return. And soon!

Anyway, a long long time ago (insert galaxy joke here,) I went to the original location of this place back when it was Afghan Kabob House II. Apparently the original had issues with rent or something similar so they moved here to this slightly smaller space which I went to a while back with a small group. The man working there was friendly and the spot looks nice and is pretty casual. Compared to the other few Afghani restaurants, the food is pretty similar to Ariana (possibly a slight preference to the latter) with this place of course being a good amount worse than the best spot which is Dunya but that is a pain to get to being in Kensington in BK. As we all ordered entrees, they gave us a large salad to begin with which had a light yogurt dressing which was simple and tasty being mostly lettuce with a bit of cucumber, cabbage, tomato, and shredded carrots. It was refreshing and worked to wet our appetite. I started with the Aushak for $8.95 listed as boiled dumplings filled with scallions, herbs, and spices topped with minted yogurt sauce. The dumplings were very soft and the dish was light with the dressing being pretty similar to what was on the salad. This was a light dish and for $3 more, I would recommend the Aushak Ghoushti instead which also comes topped with seasoned ground beef which adds extra flavor and more texture as well. For my main dish, I was originally going to get my usual standard which is the Kabuli Pulao/Palau but instead I decided to go with something I haven't had before which was the Naringe Palau for $31.95. This consisted of chunks of lamb tenderly cooked with herbs and spices under a mound of brown basmati rice topped with orange rind, pistachios, and pine nuts. The lamb was very tender with plenty of meat on the bottom. The rice had a nice texture and had a mild bitterness as well as some crunch from the various nuts. This was tasty though I would get the other dish next time. The rest of the people had either kabobs, Kabuli pulao, or some vegetarian dishes and other people enjoyed their meals. This was overall a decently tasty Afghani restaurant. It's not my favorite that I've been to but the flavors were good and the portions were decent for the price point.

We got a four-top at the front of the place. The restaurant decor is pleasant. It's a bit dark inside, but welcoming. Our server was very friendly. We started by ordering three starters - Mantu Dumplings (described in the menu as: steamed dumplings w/ beef, onions, cilantro + spices, topped with garlic mint yogurt sauce and garnished with lamb gravy and yellow split peas), Borani Banjan (eggplant) and Bamia (okra, stewed with tomato and onion sauce). Each of the starters was great. I think my favorite was the dumpling, followed by the eggplant and then the okra. Although the okra dish was delicious, it seemed like the simplest one, and one I could make most easily at home. The server suggested we get an order of Afghan Naan to go with the starters. The Naan was "OK". I would call that the weak part of the meal. It was fairly flavorless and didn't really enhance the flavors of the starters. The three of us shared two entrees - Chicken Afghan Kabob and Salmon Kabob. Each comes with a large side of rice. We also ordered one Qabuli (a rice topping made of raisins and carrots, sautéed in a cardamom syrup). The Qabuli is an extra dollar. The server said he would put it on the side, which was an excellent suggestion, because the rice was flavorful on its own and the Qabuli on its own made an excellent, sweet side dish. The Kabobs were both very good. The chicken was moist and tender and nicely seasoned. But the salmon - oh my gosh - the salmon light, flaky texture melted in my mouth. I couldn't stop eating the salmon. The rice was flavorful and the texture consistent. Before serving the entree, the server brought over a small salad to share, which was refreshing - lettuce and tomato and cucumbers. We didn't order dessert. But the server comped us a Firnee (homemade custard), which was very good. We were so full we couldn't finish it (or most of the rice from the entrees). The portions here are a nice size. Bottled waters were $2 each. They were ice cold and a good value for a restaurant. Honestly, the prices here overall are very reasonable. The food is good and nice portion sizes.
