After the instagram posts about this place, my wife and I came with such high hopes for the AYCE with its variety of sushi and hot appetizer options. To start with the positives, the pork soup dumplings were surprisingly big and delicious for a restaurant that doesn't specialize in dim sum. Rolls with made with an excellent fish and avocado to rice ratio. Kitchen is definitely generous with the portion size of the fish they give you the freshness of the raw fish options was top notch and good value for $35.99 per person. Now for the negatives... I made an OpenTable reservation for 7:00PM and I'll admit that we were 15 minutes late, but the main dining room appeared only half full and it still took about 20 minutes to be seated followed by another 20 minutes for a server to come to us. Mia was very friendly when she arrived, but we were so hungry from waiting that we already started ordering the the QR code menu option on the table before she arrived. There seem to be staffing issues contributing to longer wait times that need to be addressed. The QR code menu option was pretty simple to use, but there were a lot of technical issues that Kabuto needs to fix because they didn't receive half the orders we submitted. Furthermore, we as the customer had to be proactive in constantly calling a staff member over to see if the kitchen received our order. Since they charge a fee for food waste, I didn't want to keep ordering only to receive multiples of the same order that we couldn't finish. Even something as simple at raw oysters with ponzu sauce had to be ordered 3 times before the kitchen finally received the order. And when a server came to warn us at 8:50PM that the kitchen was closing at 9:00PM, I reminded them about all of the specialty rolls we had not received only to find out that the sushi kitchen was already closed. That would've been a helpful warning to receive because we ordered 4 specialty rolls and didn't receive a single one. And after the 8:50PM warning, we immediately put in our dessert orders but after 20 minutes, we still ended up having to tell our order directly to Mia who finally brought them out. If the QR code menu is so frustrating to use, they should really get rid of it and let us order directly from the waitress. The food we did receive was delicious, but after the slow service and repeated issues with the QR code menu, we probably will not return. read more

Holy smokes...the service is not their strength. 35 minutes at the table before they took our order. On this night, they were completely understaffed. If I could give you one piece of advice on this place it is to come in hungry...and hope they don't abandon you if they're understaffed. Once the food starts going it just keeps coming in huge quantities. We needed a wheelbarrow to hold my big belly as we left. We had a BOGO coupon for the hibachi, which made this a better deal, and I ended up getting a steak and lobster combo. Lots of food, but we ended up ordering the hibachi to eat at a side table instead of the grill, which is just not the same experience and less appetizing (food is just not as hot and it's less festive). I would not do this again if I came back. There are some really good deals on the menu like the sushi sets, which again come with loads of food. Happy hour is great as well in terms of the drink/snack options, which is why I'm rounding this up to a four. read more

Certainly better than Benihana's in terms of ambiance and food itself, but otherwise, hibachi places usually leave me desiring more, and Kabuto is no exception. However, I love watching a short show of my food being made, so whenever I crave some junk food while slowing it down by waiting for each round, this is our go-to. I always get a couple bottles of cold or hot house sake as well- terrible grade sake but, for the price (I think it's $9 per bottle), it'll do. The show itself is also much better here- the chefs don't appear nearly as miserable as Benihanas'. The food is just stir fry with a boatload of sodium, so I know I'll be drinking gallons of water throughout the night. Nothing to sing home about. I usually get scallops and they're just fine. Tried the lobster tail yesterday which was a bit better in terms of freshness. I have yet to successfully catch a shrimp or egg in my mouth, but the inadvertent practice sessions after coming here a handful of times should serve me well on my next visit. read more

We had a wonderful time here today for Mother's Day. A beautiful restaurant in Rockville with convenient free parking near main entrance (behind the building ) We did hibachi table and our hibachi chef Kevin was so entertaining and funny and made our food so delicious we made sure to tip extra. We had sushi, edamame, tempura , then chicken hibachi , filet (3$ upgrade but well worth it ) and chicken hibachi and sirloin and chicken hibachi. So delicious! The steaks were juicy and cooked to perfection. The chicken was well seasoned and generous , the shrimp appetizer, soup and salad were also amazing. We enjoyed getting noodles AND fried rice instead of having to choose like most hibachi places. We truly had an amazing experience with great food, EXCELLENT staff (even the hostess and food runners and our wonderful server all were friendly , helpful, professional and knowledgeable of the menu. )Thank you all staff for making this a great Mother's Day ! We came to this newish restaurant on my birthday as I had received a card from them for a free birthday meal... and being the cheapskate that I am I said, "why not?" I was soooo impressed! The decor was very nice, the food was superb, the portions very generous and service excellent! My wife had the seafood soup, which came loaded with shrimp and other goodies. The Hibachi meals had soup, salad, rice, roasted veggies and ample portions of the meats (I had steak) or fish (huge chunk of salmon). Prices were also quite good... the Hibachi meal with steak and salmon was $26! The rest of my guests had other goodies, sushi, etc., and everyone seemed pleased. The service was very thoughtful and regularly checked in with us. We all really enjoyed our drinks and the lychee martini was the perfect balance. Now - the bartenders seem to be annoyed that someone is here (perhaps having a disability is annoying to them? they seemed pleasant enough to other folks at the bar, yet didn't seem to have any interest in me as a costumer). Basically - the prices are excellent. And the food used to be good. Been coming here for happy hour for several years. Tonight might've been my last time. The bartender seemed quite annoyed at my presence. Actually, she seemed overly delighted to be serving other guests at the bar. She asked me several times are you OK. And I said I'd like to order something else. And she never came back to me. I had been considering trying something different. Especially as the spring rolls used to come as three well cooked offerings during happy hour, and today I got only two and very oily crispy bits. That person never came back to me, even though I said several times I'd like to order another glass of wine and some more food. So I finally pulled out cash and left it on the bar and rolled away. Kabuto is the first hibachi place I've ever been to. We got a coupon for BOGO free. My first recommendation is to call the restaurant to take a reservation. OpenTable and other sites don't show available tables. Inspite of taking a reservation, it took an extra 25 mins to seat us and we went on a weekday at 7:30! Now about the food, we ordered drinks plum wine and Moscow mule. I loved the plum wine. For appetizers we had the teriyaki beef buns, it was delicious. Now for the main hibachi meal. I got the combo of beef & chicken , my hubby got the seafood combo and my kids got the chicken hibachi. The show that you get of hibachi cooking depends on the chef your table gets. Our guy was a littler muted, likely at the end of a long day . So my second recommendation is to get an earlier reservation. Hibachi food by itself isn't all that great. It's just oily fried and smothered in sauce . But the show is what makes the difference and my kids and I had never been to one. You get a lot of food. Mostly carbs (rice and noodles) . I saw almost every patron take home a to-go box. The beef was well cooked. My husband got a small piece of salmon and some shrimp in his seafood combo. The noodles taste better than the fried rice. GO DINE SOMEPLACE WHERE THE PARKING IS ACTUALLY FREE...instead of falsely advertised or enforced. Our family went for a weekday dinner with the full knowledge that Kabuto offers free validated parking if you park in the lot outside their door. After our nearly two-hour dinner, my sister went to ask the hostess about parking. The hostess actually took my sister's parking ticket and supposedly validated it in the machine on their counter. But when we tried to leave the crowded parking lot using the validated ticket, the exit machine required us to pay $4 for parking. We pushed the button for assistance from the parking lot company and ended up getting into a stressful argument because the attendant just kept insisting that we pay even though we said we put in a validated ticket. They told us to go back inside to discuss with the restaurant, but we couldn't back up with about 5 cars waiting behind us--so we were forced to pay the $4 just to exit. I went back inside to explain the argument we had. Obviously, at this point, we didn't have the validated ticket...all I had was the receipt for our nearly two-hour stay at the restaurant. I talked to three different hostesses at the front counter, but they said I would need to speak to the manager (who was supposedly outside someplace where they didn't know where he/she was.) So I specifically left my name and number and asked them to have the manager call me. Only later when we returned home, we started to wonder if the hostess actually validated our parking ticket properly or not. 10 days later, we have yet to hear from the restaurant manager! There are certainly many other Asian restaurants in the area where parking is free...and management is kind/helpful. For instance, East Pearl nearby on Rockville Pike. Or K-Pot in North Bethesda. I'd rather any customers avoid the headache and stress that we had. P.S. The service in the restaurant was nice, but if you decide to order steak, and you want it cooked a certain way like "rare" or "medium rare", make sure you tell the chef one level closer to rare than you actually want. All of our steak was overcooked. We would even tell/insist the chef, "Please remove it already", the chef would continue another 10 seconds cooking it. We went on a super hot day, 100 degrees weather outside. Either the ac was broken or they were being cheap, as the inside felt the same as outside, no difference. We were all dying in heat. On top of there, The food was extremely salty to the point of not enjoyable, and the quality of the meats and seafood seemed low. Very disappointed when places become all you can eat to appease the AYCE trend in our area, but fall very short in doing so. If you saw any reels/tiktoks, the videos are VERY different from a normal experience as a normal customer. Everything was cold and felt like it was frozen food from the ayce menu. You get a smaller portion than what you're anticipating and even the photos provided are very different from what you actually get. Things we ordered in the beginning would come at the near end, never got 2 sushi rolls ordered and gave up on ordering sushi, the soup dumplings/udons were not good, and the hibachi items would come all at different times also. We got the noodles first and it sat there for 20 mins cause there was nothing to eat it with. The server came to our table and apologized every time knowing the food timing and quality was poor, and even told us to try another AYCE place in rockville next time. I wouldn't knock the service too hard either cause to be honest it seems like they were set to fail and were very overwhelmed especially with all the ordering is done through your phone/their QR code. After ordering food, it took over an hour and 15 minutes to receive the order. It was such awful service, I do not know if it is an issue with management, or the chefs but it was very upsetting. Kabuto use good ingredients but the taste will vary based on your chef. Ours over salted our food, didn't distribute portions evenly, and cooked steak very rare when we all wanted it medium rare. He was also just going through the motions and not very entertaining or engaging compared to chefs at other tables. The waiters also seemed to have some confusion regarding who's serving which table, which caused our water and drinks to be delivered late and at separate times. read more
