Takeout, however, stayed nonstop busy with steady orders and delivery pickups. That seemed like a great sign. I was surprised by the spacious interior as it appeared smaller from the outside. There are ample tables and booths for any group size, and the atmosphere is ideal for a quiet, calming meal. Our server was polite and attentive, taking our order soon after seating us and delivering everything promptly. We ordered: - Japanese Shumai: served hot, with a crispy exterior and juicy interior, these were such a good bite! I could've eaten 20! Pro tip: I recommend ordering two servings if you're considering this app. - Chicken Fried Rice: a generous portion served with house-made yum yum sauce, complemented our sushi rolls perfectly. - Royal Dragon Roll: King crab, shrimp tempura and cream cheese topped with eel, avocado, spicy mayo & eel sauce. - Firecracker Roll: Shrimp tempura, snow crab, avocado topped with spicy tuna, spicy sriracha mayo. The sushi rolls were exceptional--tightly packed, well held together, and flavorful! Overall, the meal was delicious and satisfying without being overly heavy. Sushi in the suburbs is a challenging category. Oyama is an unassuming restaurant in a strip mall. We had five different roles. The sushi was fine. It satisfied our sushi craving, but certainly wasn't standout sushi. If you've had really good sushi, Oyama will be ok for you, but nothing near amazing. We did have one roll with cream cheese that most of us didn't really like, but we still ate it, so there's that. Our server was attentive and we all had sake that everyone enjoyed. A friend and I went here on a Wednesday night, it seemed pretty slow, I think there may have been two other seated tables. We had prompt service. We ordered a few rolls and the calamari, I was disappointed finding a hair in the calamari at the start of our meal, which did make me a tad anxious for the rest of our meal. My husband and I stopped in on a Friday night. Service was speedy and the food was decent. The space itself wasn't the most exciting ambiance but it's Plymouth so wasn't expecting it to be professionally designed by any means. It just was a little odd to be dining in with one of the tables in the dining room being gawd for the takeout orders...just perhaps a better place to get takeout from rather than dine in next time. We started with the crab rangoons which were okay. The filling was good but the dough was a bit bland/not as crispy as I like my wontons. My husband had shrimp fried rice for his entree and we both split sushi. The rice was a little bland but with a little extra soy and Sriracha and it was good. The sushi has very generous portions of the ingredients but the rolls were a little too large and kind of broke apart because they weren't rolled tightly enough. Overall I don't know that we'll make it a point to go back but I wouldn't avoid it and would say their value, staff politeness and sushi fish quality was all good. read more

OKAY...Here is the thing...As a land locked state, this place is delivering fresh fish consistently, and a greater variety than the usual sushi restaurant from Lake Minnetonka, to the St. Croix River near Hudson, WI, from Forest Lake to Lakeville, I have been to MANY sushi restaurants. This is the first place that I have found that has fresh fish with the variety it has...seam foam, albicore tuna belly, salmon belly, different kinds of urchin, and...just thinking about it, my mouth is watering. The creations and cuts of the sushi chef and back of house chefs (kitchen chefs) are remarkably made with care and precision. Sure, the price may be higher than other sushi restaurants in your neighborhood, I tell you the reason why is that this restaurant takes the time and care to procure rarer cuts and types of fish that are fresh like they just came off the nets in the fisher boats in Japan. Great cocktails, great service, wonderful, delectable food in a great atmosphere. And plentiful parking. What else do you want?! read more

The fish quality here has gone downhill significantly over the past year. Our rolls smelled and tasted very fishy all around, and another big tell for me was the salmon sashimi having none of its natural sweetness whatsoever. These are all solid indications of fish about to go bad. Additionally, there was white paper/tape all over the menu covering up different parts, items they no longer carry I imagine due to cost. I have a suspicion that this place is cutting corners everywhere possible to try and survive. Unfortunately, that usually means it is the beginning of the end for an establishment. Sushi is not a budget food category, not when health and safety and flavor all ride on having excellent fish quality. I cannot recommend eating here. read more

Wanted to check this place out with a takeout order. The front staff person clearly indicated my order was an annoying interruption from whatever she was wanting to do at the time. Watched the chef prepare my sushi rolls as he horribly coughed and sneezed into his bare hands. No food gloves. The last time I contracted a virus was 6 years ago. No coincidence I got sick from whatever virus bug he was hacking into the food. The sushi was unremarkable, on a par with the pre-packaged stuff you can pick up at Hy-Vee for half the price. My Irishman and I have a thing for new eateries. With yesterday's sushi craving, Oyama was up to bat. The owners clearly care about exposure and marketing given the paid Yelp touches on this page. Not a good or bad thing, simply an observation. Given they likely track their Yelp standing, I trust they take Yelp opinions into account, so here goes: We walk into the space, and I'm hit with enough air conditioning that I immediately start shivering. While wearing a long sleeve, jeans, closed-toe shoes, and a thick sweater wrap. I get that it was sweltering hot outside hours ago. That was hours ago. Ease up on the breeze. Your electricity bill will thank you. I'm visibly affected by the odd indoor temperature, clearly pulling my sweater wrap in around me and rubbing my sleeves to create heat, and the lone waitress leads us to the one booth directly under a vent. With three occupied tables in the entire space full of seating options. We didn't even follow her after she headed towards the general area of the vent, let alone stop directly under it - we chose our own table far from her. My Irishman and I typically choose several sushi roll options to share. Since he wanted to try the chicken teriyaki bento box dinner instead this time, I went with the chirashi bowl. Both came with complementary miso soup and salad. The salad was my favorite part of this dining experience. The dressing is made in-house and reminded me of fresh, zingy dressings back in Japan, though sweeter than I'm used to and prefer. I'm inspired to get back into making my own dressings in reminiscing my favorite tastes of Japan. My Irishman was put off by this establishment's miso soup, though he typically loves the cloudy broth. He had a very strong scent memory reaction to the top notes of this particular soup that brought up, well, manure from a friend's farm in his childhood. It was strong enough a reflex that he then waited for me to try mine, half-convinced I would catch the same whiff of eau de poo. I had no such foul detection, luckily, though it wasn't the most balanced miso bowl I've had in the Twin Cities. Poor guy attempted a second spoonful after seeing me unaffected and promptly put the spoon down and pushed the bowl far away mid-sip - and he's normally our trash compacter. Our entrées arrived as I emptied his bowl of its miso contents. Neither resembled their menu photos. I'd expected they wouldn't to point I even stated as much before ordering - the menu representations were piled high with food and included enough luxury offerings not to fit the price tags. I come from marketing and branding, so I can spot when marketing is likely exaggerated. Most people don't have that background, and it's highly misleading to have the items paid to have a food stylist and photographer create for menus not correspond at least fairly well with what is actually presented to diners. Or were stock photos from some random source slapped into the menu as being close enough a representation? Chirashi is essentially sashimi over sushi rice. Simple. Sushi chefs don't put sushi slices on a chirashi bowl - sashimi slices are cut way thicker. Why? With rice serving as a foundation and giving additional texture to sushi, shops can get away with thinner slices of fish without much complaint. Do that with a sashimi order, and you face flimsy bites of fish you can barely differentiate in taste or texture. Boring. If you're dead-set on cheaper, flimsy slices, at least add textural interest through squid, octopus, et cetera to offset the lack of textural appeal. Basic sushi prep knowledge any decent sushi chef would know. Guess why I'm going over this lesson in this review. Anyway, my Irishman was happy with his bento box. Amused, again, that the presented fare did not match the advertised photo of, say, tempura, for one. Awkward. Why did the waitress keep asking throughout the meal if I wanted water? I'd ordered a hot tea. I had my hot tea. Refill that when necessary. Chill out on the water ask. What she didn't ask was whether we wanted dessert. Far as we could tell, there was no dessert menu. That's right: No after-dinner mochi delight. Gasp - that's it, I quit. read more

We had a happy hour menu with good prices on entry level rolls and rail drinks/house wine. They also have a specials of the day menu. I had the Tuna Overdose. 5 large pieces of blue fin, Big Eye tuna and yellow fin tuna with scallion and pickled radish. It was amazing. Also in the specials was the #9 Roll- shrimp tempura, cucumber, crabstick, topped with salmon, avocado, eel sauce and sriracha mayo. Fresh and delicious. The decor, a modern twist. I think this will be our newest sushi fix spot when those cravings for fresh fish and hibachi hits. There's not many Asian eateries in Plymouth that survives so hoping this place makes it through. Went here with some friends and my teenaged kids. The exterior could use some decor. The windows are bare right now but that's probably because they just opened not too long ago and haven't had the chance to decorate. The interior has an upscale look to it. The tables were very well crafted and seating very comfortable. The sushi bar fits about 10 patrons. Started off with a few appetizers. The squid tasted amazing and the presentation was superb. The fish in the ceviche was fresh and easy to eat. The beef tataki was different than from we're used to. Didn't know it was going to be in a salad form. When we've ordered this dish at other sushi establishments, we just get the paper thin sliced beef smothered in the tataki sauce. Had some Japanese wings but the kids got to them before I could snap a picture. The wings reminded them of the ones their grandpa makes for them when they visit. The sushi was delicious and the hibachi dishes were fulfilling. The plates that the meal was served on seems a bit too large for the food that was on it. I would suggest using a tad smaller plate so it doesn't look so bare. Don't get me wrong, the food was more than enough for one to enjoy. It just looks like you get skimped at first glance. I decided to try this place as I was in the area and sushi sounded good. I placed an order for pickup of a spicy tuna and spicy salmon roll. When I ordered there was an option to add 'extra avocado' which I didn't do because I didn't need extra. Imagine my surprise though when the roll I picked up didn't have avocado or even cucumber. It was literally fish and rice. What? If it had listed it didn't come with avocado I would've paid to add it. But how do you not even have cucumber? So disappointed with my dinner. read more

Super quiet on a Sunday night, just us and two couples in the whole place. I always like to try new things and I love sushi, so stopping here was an exciting new adventure. The server was working very hard, and he appeared too busy to see us for about 15 mins. We weren't mad; the menu was very large, with many many foods, and many items. We tried something new the last appetizer on their menu, seemed like BBQ meets Asian; was not a fan! Was served at 600 degrees , and after we let it cool it was just unusual flavors put together. The box was $23, and it was awesome! Great value for the price and a taste of everything the restaurant had to offer. We both got them and we were FULL. The food is here is really good but after too many issues with pick up I will not be returning. I have tried pick up here at least 5 times and every time I end up waiting 20 minutes after their estimated time and I usually give them about an additional 10 minutes before headed over. Today I decided to try a change and use Postmates's to order my food and my husband got there 10 minutes after the estimated time again. They proceeded to say that since I didn't pay for my order they didn't make it and we had to show the proof that it was paid for (post mates doesn't give you the option to pay in store) and after that they said oh we found your order and will begin to make it now. We had lunch here today for the 2nd time and loved it again! At around 12:30, there was no one there but the staff was still very nice and attentive. My dad loves the sushi/sashimi lunch (comes with miso soup and a salad) because the cuts are good and it is very fresh. Their special rolls/regular maki are also delicious and fresh! We especially like the good lunch prices such as 2 rolls for $9 or 3 for $12 (and it comes with miso soup) as well as other deals. My mom and I split the 2 rolls and then a special and it is just enough for a great lunch. We really enjoy Oyama and hope to keep coming back! I also included pictures of our first trip - a special and a 3 Roll combo. Sooooo HAPPY!!!! I'm a West Coast sushi snobb. Have been back in MN for 6 years and this is the FIRST good sushi I've had! And, yes, I've tried them all from Excelsior to Minneapolis. Super fresh fish, great flavor, friendly staff - and soy paper if you ask for it (and I always do). I like a little thinner slice, but I'm certain I can ask for that next time. I ordered a bunch of appetizers and veggie fried rice. The vegetable spring rolls were obviously frozen (store bought), very bland taste and not fully cooked all the way. Vegetable gyoza was also frozen tasting, no flavor, overcooked. Ragoons were standard. Shumai was flavorless. Fried rice was ok.
