This is more of a 4.5 star. It's been a while since I had Ethiopian food so this definitely hit the spot. Parking is a pain though. It's residential street Parking and it's narrow. I had takeout so didn't get to see much service but from what I experience, it can be bad or good thing. It wasn't busy and it was pretty quiet and laid back. The cashier was very comfortable, like she's at home rather than at work, but she was very kind. After my order a different person brought out my food. Foodwise: we got the meat and veggie sampler. It was a good amount of food for the price. Everything tasted delicious. I wish there was a little more variety of meat as there was definitely more veggies. Flavors were spot on though. read more

It has been a while since I had Kaffa's food. I've never eaten there; either ordered pickup or delivery. Tonight I ordered the Kaffa Combo for delivery. There was really no spice in the food, except for the raw jalapeños added on top of most dishes. (As you can imagine, that did not suffice.) I don't know if this is a tarriff/supply issue, if they have a new person making food, etc., but it did not fulfill my craving for Ethiopian. I'm bummed. read more

We went last night for restaurant week having never tried this spot before and it was SO worth it. You can do a combo with or without meat, we went meatless and it comes with tea. It was more than enough food for two people and all of the offerings tasted so good and fresh. The injera was really tasty, it had a warm subtle spice to it which was a nice vessel for all of these to make it to your mouth. The service was really quick and friendly. That's it, this is my new favorite Ethiopian restaurant in Seattle. I ordered the Kaffa combo and the vegetarian combo over Uber eats and it is a ginormous pile of food. The portions here are so generous and such good value I would definitely order again and I wouldn't have to cook for days because of the amount of leftovers. The flavors of all the dishes are so spot on and flavorful, and the spicy dishes pack a good punch. They are very generous with the injera as well and my favorite thing is when all the juices seep into the injera and it becomes super flavorful and soggy. I'm also so impressed with how thoughtfully everything is packaged! Usually, when I get Ethiopian for takeout, all the food is already just packed onto the injera, but here, they take the time to individually package each dish, and injera separately as well as a little container for the cottage cheese as well. This place now become my favorite Ethiopian restaurant after coming twice and getting delicious (and economical) food each time. I got a Groupon for the Vegetarian Combo Platter + coffee or tea ($16.99, which also), and ordered the Lamb Wot (a little spicy, super favorful, so good!) and Beef Shiro (beef cubes in lentil sauce). My new favorite Ethiopian restaurant. Flavor wise. Interior design wise, not so much. Regardless I see myself making this place my goto for ethiopean. The Food was cooked to perfection. Perfection. The flavors are so defined and refined. My order was absolutely cooked with love and many precision. I've had good lentils in my life but I didn't know they could be made so well with a great balance of texture and distinct flavor. Each lentil dish was completely different and hard to stop eating with every bite. Their meat was cooked as perfect as I've ever had. So tender and juicy and even cut into nice sizes. The only thing missing was the egg I'm used to in the combos. I'm curious how theirs would have tasted. The prices are appropriate for the proportions. I've had a craving for Ethiopian food since I moved to Washington from DC, so of course, I went on TikTok to find some recommendations. I watched a video mentioning this place and I knew I had to try it. I tried the meal and veggie platter and it was delicious. So delicious that I went back a couple of days later with my parents to try the same thing, but a bigger platter. My dad who is so hard to please, and he loved it so much. I've now gone here 4-5 times and enjoyed their food each time. While I've gone with groups and stuck to either the veggie combo or the meat/veggie combo plate, in the future I could see myself trying other items since these have tasted so good. If you haven't eaten Ethiopian food before, you might want to search online for "how to eat Ethiopian food" to get some tips on eating with injera. (Hint: no utensils involved.) Super easy and super fun at this place. Great food, good service, unpretentious location, fabulous prices. A family size combo plate will easily feed 4 (and possibly more depending on appetites). Kaffa is one of the few coffee shops close to me that's open late. Great place to get some work done and enjoy coffee, cakes, snacks, and a delicious Ethiopian meal. I've never felt rushed here and usually stay at least 2-3 hours. Warm friendly service. Neighborhood gem. Had a slice of Pistachio ricotta cake - divine! Their mocha was lovely too. I am SO GLAD I ordered dinner delivery via GrubHub from Kaffa Coffee. The veggie sampler arrived piping hot (I live about a mile away) and had plenty of injera with it. It was plenty enough food for two servings. The misir wot was by far my favorite item on the platter. The tikil gomen was also delicious and balanced the spice from the misir wot nicely. I went here today with three angsty progressives who were wanting Ethiopian food but also from Tacoma so the southern location was more accessible to us! At first we weren't sure it was open and I think there is some cultural subtext/scheduling/meal timing we didn't understand but it all turned out great. The lovely cook clearly phoned a server who was very pleasant even though we suspect we interrupted her day... Thank you to the two lovely ladies who gave us this flavorful opportunity. We ordered shareable Vegan and Meat and Veggie Samplers and some lovely tea. Chai-like flavors with pre-warmed cups and a pitcher of frothy milk made the tea an experience as well. The platters came beautifully arranged on very large, round plates and several rolls of tasty injera. The Vegan plate included Misir Wot (spicy berbere lentils which was my favorite), Alicha Misir (garlic ginger lentils), Ater Kik (lemon yellow turmeric split peas), Gomen (stewed collards), Tikil Gomen (turmeric inflected cabbage, carrots and potatoes), some fantastic, spicy beets and a green bean dish. All were flavorful, a texture treat and pinching bites with the teff injera (like a very flexible, absorbent, buckwheat pancake) 'fed my soul' according to one of the angsty progressives who has fond memories of adventures in Africa. The meat and veggie platter has several of the same dishes plus chicken tibs (onion, tomato, garlic, jalapeño), Beef Wot (spicy, saucy, berbere stew), and another beef dish topped with crumbly cheese. Both included a nice romaine, tomato, onion salad with a peppery vinaigrette. We didn't get to try the Ful or Shiro, both of which are probably great. Or the Enqulal sils scrambled eggs... I haven't yet been in person to Kaffa, but found them on DoorDash as I was trying out various Ethiopian restaurants one at a time when I had the craving for it. Kaffa's food is AMAZING. All the spices make for a great meal, and it is spicy - so delicious. I ordered the gomen and misir wot, two dishes I absolutely love. I decided to try something new, and went for the kitfo - something a little bit out of my comfort zone (I like steak tartare but haven't had it much). If you're a meat eater, you have to try it! It comes with this homemade cheese which is so good I could eat it straight. I'm not sure if they generally package the injera separately from the entrée dishes, but I asked them to in the notes since I always end up w/ leftovers and other places put the food directly on the injera in the takeout containers (the traditional way of eating the food). Everything came very well-packaged. I found my favorite Ethiopian restaurant and can't wait to go in person to eat there when things are back to normal. I went in there for lunch, ordered the combo. It came with 6 dishes (4 veg, 2 non-veg) and some salad on top of Injir (thin spongy bread) and a side serving of same bread. It was more than enough for 2 people. Food tasted very much like Indian, not too spicy but flavourful, their bread is like a thicker Dosa. Everything tasted really good for my Indian tastebuds. Kind of reminded me of home food (weird, right!) Reason to ding a star: 1. couple of dishes were little too oily and oil actually dripped through the bread to bottom of plate. 2. Even thought the plate looks beautiful with the setup but the bread gets soggy by the end, so it might be better of they serve separately. read more

We ordered the Vegetarian plate and a Lamb dish for our dinner last night. We were very impressed with the portion size and there was lots of injera. The food however, was undercooked. The yellow peas definitely needed more cooking, and if the lamb had cooked just a little longer, it would have been tender, not tough. I think they are used to people eating later than 5pm was all I could figure. It was delivered promptly and I was delighted to find that one of the veggies included were beets. I'm going to put the leftovers in the slowcooker this morning so it's ready for lunch. read more

I ordered beef tibs via uberEats that arrived cold. First disappointment was when I saw plastic foam container that is just bad bad for the environment. When I opened it the thing did look tasty at all. My first beef bite was a big big mistake. It was so spicy, it maimed me cry for five minutes and nothing helped. The beef was very BAD. This shitty dinner had soggy vegetables and chewy meat and gloopy, saccharine sauce. They might have used the wrong cut for the stew.. as it came out very dry and felt like I was chewing rubber. Ordered takeout "Veggie Combo" and "Chicken tibs." I give 2 stars to the chicken, maybe 3 to the veggies. I love spice and dimensional flavors, which is why Ethiopian food is my favorite. I've eaten at lots of Ethiopian places in Seattle, and by comparison, I was just a little disappointed with the lack of spice in the food here tonight. There was nothing wrong with the veggie dish other than it being on the unseasoned side. The chicken tibs, however, tasted remarkably bland and dry, and didn't have any heat or tangy-ness like I'm used to. I would try again but maybe a different dish and hope for more excitement! I'm going to be honest, I was really skeptical about this place at first. It's located in not the best corner of town, and also - coffee, wine, AND Ethiopian food? You can't be good at all these things. Plus, walking into this cafe was like walking into a sketchy bar filled with regulars, if these regulars were only all old Ethiopian men. As two girls who know nothing about Ethiopia, right when we entered into the place, groups of men all looked up, confused as to who invaded their territory. Lucky for us, the owner was INCREDIBLY nice, and showed us to a table immediately. We were out of place for sure, but quickly felt right at home. We came here after purchasing a Groupon - $9 for $15 worth of food. We spent this on the Kaffa Combo plate, which is their take on the traditional Ethiopian slaw of different dhals and vegetables on top of Injera bread. This was priced at $15.99, so using the Groupon for 2 people was an insanely good deal. This definitely serves 2-3 people. My friend and I were struggling to finish this at the end. Everything was so flavorful and uniquely spiced, the injera bread was spongy and soft. I honestly did not know what I was eating, but everything I dug my bread into was delicious. If the food didn't win you over, the service really will. Although getting my food took a while, especially since no one else was eating and the place was pretty empty on a Saturday night, the owner was so nice. He kept asking if everything was fine, and then offered to bring more bread or any of the dhals if we wanted more. What restaurant offers to bring more of their food that you like after you finished eating, free of charge??? This place is truly a hidden gem in Seattle, and considering how slow business was on Saturday night and the "customers" (more like people just hanging around) that were there, this place definitely deserves some praise. Mind you, this review is only for their Ethiopian food - I didn't try their coffee or wine. I did take a slice of their tiramisu to go, which was great, but it is not made in house.
