Alissa is the BEST!!!!!! Oh my gosh ..... she is a cute, young lady who offered to help me with buying a new dog tag. What I received was so much more. I needed a few more items and when I listened to her describe each item with the knowledge of someone who has done this for many, many years, I was blown away. Not only did she know so much about the products but her sincerity, personal preference, brand and nutritional knowledge, dog knowledge..... totally blew me away. You could tell that she wasn't trying to sell me ---- she was just describing what she knew, what she preferred and what had worked for her and her dogs. I really felt she cared about me and my dog. She definitely carries out Kahoots' mission: passion for animals and an idea that caring for animals to the highest degree. Kahoots is a neat little pet store that carries a lot of high-quality dog and cat food brands. Some of the brands sold here cannot be found at major pet stores like Petco and Petsmart. They also have a wide selection of interesting aquarium fish. However, when it comes to pricing, Kahoots is a bit on the high side. read more

Over the years I've had many dogs - which means I've had many opportunities to shop at pet supply stores. I can say without reservation that once I started shopping at the Kahoots store in Poway, my expectations for customer service, product knowledge and product availability have been raised considerably. Previous experiences at other pet supply stores fell into 2 categories. A "warehouse" environment with employees trained primarily in using the cash register, or a "boutique" environment with very limited selections and employees trained to sell "bling" not substance. Every time I shop at the Kahoots in Poway, I am greeted when I walk in and asked how they can help me. Rather than just point me to a location, they walk me to the location and stay to answer any questions that I might have. They take the time to understand more than what I came to buy - they learn what it is that I really need. This isn't just "up-selling" because their solution is just as often less expensive as it is more expensive. I trust them so much that even though I moved downtown, I STILL drive to the Poway Kahoots to shop. I don't know how they train their employees to be so customer-centric, but I wish the employees in ALL of the stores I shop had the same training. THANKS SO MUCH!! read more

***UPDATE*** So after called the store today, it turns out the older guy was the manager. His only rely was "sorry you feel that way" as I explained what went down on how I will not be returning there again. So sad he felt that way. Never to return to his store. So we go in here at least 1 a month to buy bunny food ( for the bunny we bought there) and 30 lbs of dog food. Tonight we get there and not seeing the time, (7:45), buy $50.00 of dog and bunny food. My son looked at a bunny and asked about the bird next to it, and the older guy working says" We closed 5 minutes ago". Not a sorry we are closed but "We closed 5 minutes ago." As I picked up the food to leave the younger guy say see you next time, my reply was maybe. I was so shocked at the old dudes remark, other wise I would have asked for a refund right there. 100% unprofessional and rude. I will check and see if I can get the dog food on-line, if not I will be changing dog food, as I WILL not deal with the RUDE uncalled for remarks again. He was more than happy to take our $50.00 plus dollars, but lost out on a 3 plus year customer. read more

WOW!!! I dont know how else to say it. This place is amazing. They got everything you need for your pet, any pet. Plus, the employees are extremely knowledgable and very helpful in finding the right stuff for your little friend. You can really tell they are animal lovers, unlike the big chain places, where its a bunch of high school kids with a part time job. There is so much good stuff I can say about this place. My 6lb yorkie happy piddles. So if staff say hello and pet her, she may piddle the size of a dime. Three stars because if/ when this happens, they act like she just tinkled in a museum. Just a quick update to say that the excellent service continues. I recently found out that they carry My Perfect Pet dog food, which is the diet one of my dogs is on. When I walk in, I can get it myself, but they ask what I am looking for and if I tell them, they will just go get it for me and even thought it is a small bag, they still offer to carry it to the car. I am able to handle all of that myself, but it is great to know that if my hands are ever full or if I can't get around easily, I can still get my shopping done easily and quickly here. read more

This store is awful. The employees are beyond rude, the place is small and cramped and they did not help me ONE BIT. The girls working there just stood around gossiping while I struggled to find what I needed. I have never felt so belittled and uncomfortable in my life. I've only shopped here a couple times, since changing my cat's diet...and I will keep coming back. For one, Kahoots is a local Southern California company...and I like supporting that! TWO!!! Their customer service is AWESOME!! The first time I came I wanted to get some better food for my lil kitty cats. I had researched "RAW" food on the internet and the gal who helped me out knew more than the interent!!! She stayed with me throughout my shopping experience, making sure I was personally taken care of. She was very knowledgable and educated me about all the gluten-free foods, wet stuff, kibble and RAW. Well, my cats LOVE the food she helped me pick out....mostly (but they are picky in their own right). I feel really goo about the food my cats are getting now. She told me the Kahoots canned wet food was made in the same factory that Trader Joes food was canned....that's gotta be GOOD! My second trip in was exactly the same, from help from a nice young gentlemen. I'm so interest in this company, that I asked if they were hiring. The people here are so nice and helpful. I have purchased 2 canaries and one cockatiel at this store at various points over the past few years. Each time the birds have turned out to be very healthy and with no problems. The nice thing about this store is that they generally only have a few of each type of bird at the same time. (Note that they generally have a few budgies, maybe three finches, a canary or two, and maybe a green cheek conure and/or a cockatiel). They don't have many, but their individual birds are quite good looking and healthy although I have noticed the conures and cockatiels are not the friendliest you can find. The nice thing about them only having one Canary at a time is that you can definitely tell which Canary is singing before you purchase him! At larger bird stores there are so many canaries in a cage none of them are singing. How can you choose one then? My orange colored canary I purchased from Kahoots was $150 versus the larger bird store's price was $99 but I feel like I got a healthier bird (only one bird in a clean cage) and I knew what his song was like because he was singing like crazy in the store. I only give 4 stars because the store employees want to know if they can help you all the time. Which I guess is a good thing in its own way. But I find it distracting. However, they are all very nice people. read more

My 14 year old Fox Terrier was diagnosed with Degenerative Myelopathy and was given 2 months to live. I spoke to Natalie who was very kind and knowledgeable on organic dog food and vitamins. She informed me of the difference between liquid vitamins and pill form. Immediately after giving my dog two liquid B complex treatments in conjunction with her gluten free salmon food I noticed a marked improvement. I know my dog is near her end but would like her quality of life to be the best that I can provide to her:) I also believe in supporting your local businesses in a difficult economy. I started Shopping at the Kahoots in Poway a few years ago when I was searching for Frozen Raw to feed my cats and dogs. I must say that I am VERY impressed with the caliber of the staff at this store. As stated by another reviewer, they don't just say Hi and let you shop by yourself. They are there to truly assist you with your purchases and care about your animals. I've been fostering cats for over 10 years and recently started fostering dogs as well. I'm fairly educated on cat and dog food and will always challenge people when they tell me that "Corn is good cuz it's high protein'. I have never had that from a Kahoots employee. I'm impressed by the training they've received and their knowledge. And I recently took my 14 year old lab mix in for teeth cleaning. The gal was super patient and suggested we do two sessions, as she realized that my old man was getting impatient. The employees at this store truly get it and put the customer first. Out of dog food, I arrived to the store just after closing on New Year's Eve. Does everyone know that Kahoots still sells rabbits that are not spayed or neutered? I feel this is irresponsible. They are actually contributing to the problem of overpopulated and homeless animals. I check in periodically to see if they are considering changing this policy but I am always left with the impression that this topic is not important to them. I have chosen not to shop in Kahoots for several years and will continue to choose not to support their business until this changes. That's too bad because I have always liked the employees and the stores. This issue is important and I know it is important to all of you animal lovers out there! I'm VERY familiar with multiple locations of Kahoots, and I have to say, my visits are pretty hit or miss, depending on who I run into when I shop there, and what I'm there for. Their animals are generally very healthy, which is rare for a pet store these days. Some employees really know their stuff and can be really helpful. However, I heard an employee tell a customer over the phone that they didn't carry budgies, and to try Petco, which I didn't understand because I was standing there next to her, and next to a cage full of budgies. Maybe she didn't realize that that's another word for the common parakeet? Also, I was disappointed when they started offering anesthesia free dental cleanings. Aside from being illegal to be performed by non-veterinary staff, those procedures are EXTREMELY dangerous when the animal is awake. Their prices in some items are very competative with big chain pet stores, and more expensive in other areas. Again, it varies. All in all, it's a convenient place to shop for your pets, and I still prefer this place over Petco. read more

The prices for the same product at Petco are several dollars less expensive here. The customer service is much better and it feels less like a huge corporation which can be comforting. Also, the animals that are being sold at this pet store seem to be well taken care of and socialized which is more than I can say for other pet stores. read more

I have been a supporter of the Kahoots chain of stores in SoCal for a couple of years. I purchased both of my bunnies at the Escondido location. But there are a lot of concerns with this store....the rabbit food they sell is full of ingredients not suitable for rabbits (seeds, corn, nuts). I occasionally buy toys for my bunnies at the stores, but only when they are on sale and cheaper than other stores. However, today I was deeply disturbed by something at the Poway location. I went just to stop in and see the new bunnies. Just as I walked up to the bunny area I saw a young boy grab and pick up one of the bunnies by the fur on her back. I sternly corrected the child and took the bunny away from him. The extra upsetting thing is that this child is the son of the store manager! This manager was standing right there when this happened and didn't even apologize to me for what his son did, when I was clearly upset. I talked to another store employee and she said that this manager SPECIFICALLY TELLS his kids to pick the rabbits up that way. I was dumbfounded. Why is a person who mistreats animals in a management position at a pet store? I really hope this situation is taken care of and that the manager is re-trained on how to handle rabbits.....if I had the money and the extra space for another bunny I would have purchased this little guy in a heartbeat. It broke my heart to see how mistreated and scared the little guy was. I was in tears from this incident and will NEVER EVER shop at any of the Kahoots stores again.....and I'll make sure everyone I know boycotts it too. read more
