Pros: *After we got off to a rough start with getting seated for our reservation, Thayer saved the night with his great personality and terrific service (thanks for the ice cream!) *The spicy tuna on crispy rice was delicious. *We loved the extensive sake selection and had fun trying different kinds in the sake flight. Cons: *Some of the worst music I have ever heard in a restaurant. It was noticeably bad and took away from the atmosphere. *Seems they are still working out the kinks with the service. *The hand rolls, gyoza, and spicy edamame did not wow me.

I heard a lot of positive feedback on this place but I wasn't impressed. I did like how the place was re-decorated from the previous owners. And our waiter was very friendly, greeted us immediately, told us about the restaurant name and the menu. We tried potato croquettes appetizer - Korokke - it was pretty good. We also tried two different sushi rolls and both were fine but I can't say I was impressed, especially for the price point. I think this is a one time visit restaurant for me.

LOVED the ambiance, loved the service, LOVED the food! Food was extremely fresh and came out pretty quick. Shoutout Evan & Jackie, excellent!!!

Excellent lunch special sushi combo with hand rolls and homemade fried dumpling. The sashimi is so fresh and the cut is very thick. Definitely a must try if you like raw fish

Great to have a new authentic Japanese restaurant in Birmingham! The staff were all very friendly. I would honestly give this place a 4.5* but I'm only allowed to give full stars. Anyways, the food was overall pretty good, would recommend and will return! We started with the gyoza and takoyaki. I thought the gyoza was great, very juicy filling with a nice crisp from the pan fry. The takoyaki was pretty good as well, perfect size for a single bite. Some places don't cook the batter enough and it comes out tasting a little doughy but this place got it just right. Next were the 4 hand rolls (temaki). I would say each hand roll is two bites each. The spicy salmon had good flavor and was well balanced. The eel was probably the best one in my opinion, the sauce was the perfect balance of sweet, smoky, and umami flavors. The spicy tuna was also well made. I didn't care for the shrimp tempura as much, not sure if it was too much tempura batter but it tasted a little heavy. The kaishin tonkotsu was okay. Toppings included onion, corn, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, scallions, nori, chashu pork, and a marinated egg. I was hoping the broth would be a little bit richer like other tonkotsu. The marinated egg was good. Chashu was on the thin side, I liked how they torched it to give it some smoke. My fiancee ordered the katsu curry, it was good. Crispy katsu was a plus. Other than that, it's what you would've expected. Matcha ice cream was also pretty good and it was a welcome surprise! Our waitress gave us a couple scoops on the house and we enjoyed it. I'd say you should give this place a try!

Stopped in for lunch on a weekday with my dad. He ordered off the lunch menu and I just got a couple classic rolls since it was my first visit. We sat outside and never went inside so I can't comment on the ambiance, but the service was fantastic. We were checked on often and helped with the menu. Dad got the sushi and sashimi set ($28). It included 2 pcs of gyoza, 2 hand rolls, 3 pcs of nigiri and 3 pcs sashimi and a miso soup. Plenty of good for lunch at a very reasonable price. The miso was one of the best we've ever tried. The fish was incredibly fresh and basically melted in our mouths. Would definitely come back for this--and bonus points because the presentation was fantastic too. I had the spicy tuna and the spicy salmon rolls. Each come with 8 large pieces filled with plenty of fish. I'd say these are slightly larger than your usual sushi rolls and so fresh and delicious. We do wish the lunch menu had some rolls on it, but overall we couldn't have been happier with our lunch. We will definitely be back.

I got the sushi tacos which I think are too small for the price point. The chirashi bowl was delicious and I got the kaishin futomaki is was excellent. I recently reordered the kaishin futomaki and chirashi online and it was made different than when I dined in. The futomaki tasted like a completely different roll. I ordered the kawaii roll and honestly wasn't impressed by the flavor or the price point. The negi toro was excellent besides the bones I had to spit out while eating. I love the quality of the fish but umami factor seems to be missing.

Authentic Japanese. Professional and classy staff. Everything tasted fresh and exceptionally prepared. One of the best Japanese restaurants / sushi spots in Michigan.

Really great addition to downtown Birmingham. True Izakawa feel. Food was great. Service was attentive.

Upon arriving the service was fantastic! The staff were very welcoming. We enjoyed the traditional Japanese feel especially the bidet in the bathroom ! Each dish was cooked to perfection and the hot sake complimented every bite.

The spicy chili garlic seasoning added the perfect amount of spice. And they even bring out extra spice to the table, if you need more! The fresh house-made noodles were cooked perfectly. I added chicken to my bowl instead of the pork. It was tender and so flavorful. The toppings -- marinated egg, green onions, bamboo shoots, kikurage mushrooms, and sesame seeds -- all came together really well. I added soybeans to my bowl. Definitely one of the best ramen bowls I've had in Michigan. I'll be back for sure. Service was quick. And even at 4pm, the place was already packed. My belly was so happy after this meal!

Not really much of an ambiance - it's a very casual place with pretty basic decor. Everyone working there was friendly and our food was brought out to us in a reasonable amount of time. I got the classic tonkotsu ramen and it was really good! The broth was flavorful and complex, the pork was tender, and the egg perfectly jammy. Apparently they make their noodles fresh everyday. The price of a ramen bowl was on par with what I'm used to (~$20 with tax + tip) but the sushi seemed a little pricey. I will have to come back to try it.

There were multiple open tables when we arrived, so that estimate seemed reasonable. Instead, we waited until nearly 9:00 p.m. During that time, we went up to the hostess stand several times to ask for an update, and every single time we were told that we were "next." Yet we continued to watch numerous other parties get seated ahead of us. As the only white group waiting, it left us feeling like we were being treated differently. I can't say for certain why we were repeatedly passed over, but the experience made us feel unwelcome, especially after watching so many other groups be seated while we were continually told we were next. This is particularly frustrating because this isn't the first time I've felt this way at Market North End. I've continued to come back because the food is genuinely very good, but great food isn't enough to make up for feeling ignored and disrespected as a customer. This is consistent with all of the rumors we have heard about this restaurant being unfair to certain races. No one should have to wait an hour and a half while being repeatedly assured they're next, only to watch other parties be seated instead. I hope management takes a serious look at how the waitlist is managed and ensures that every guest is treated fairly and consistently.
