Waited 45min in a long ass line before 10:30AM, chugged my latte in 30sec. Incredibly smooth and balanced Miso Caramel latte made me feel less pissed about waiting too long in a line for the first time in years while accidentally stuck in older san mateo. Got the caramel miso and mission mocha. Delicious not too sweet, slightly salty taste to each which makes the drink more flavorful. Would come again!
WHY I WENT HERE: - breakfast THE LOOK (FROM THE OUTSIDE): - located on N El Camino Real, closest to 24th Ave - the line definitely pours out of the door onto the sidewalk to the neighboring establishments THE LOOK (FROM THE INSIDE): - packed; some seating available against the wall or in the front window; limit on how many people waiting to order can enter inside the establishment THE MENU: - signatures - espresso - coffee - matcha - kumo signatures - tea - toast WHAT I ORDERED: - strawberry matcha chocolate bar - black sesame matcha latte - pork floss croissant - open-faced egg sando THE TASTE: - strawberry matcha chocolate bar - didn't taste it but niece loved it - black sesame matcha latte - underwhelming; the oat milk was overpowering - pork floss croissant - great! - open-faced egg sando - good! just a tad too salty CUSTOMER SERVICE: - warm - welcoming - efficient
Stumbled upon this cafe and enjoyed the pastries and coffee. I got the black sesame signature coffee, which was a bit bitter for my liking and could have been sweeter but still enjoyed it! 8/10 Ube Brioche was not too sweet and had ube crème in the inside which was a nice touch. 9/10 Red bean pain puissant was something I never had before and paired very well with the coffee! This pastry was crispy on the outside and the red bean gave it a nice texture! 10/10 Service was wonderful and I had a good experience
4.5 stars for Kaizen & Coffee. I met a friend here for a 9 AM coffee date on a Monday and was met with good vibes, happy baristas, and club like music. We came here for coffee but ended up with 2 toasts and a pastry. By the time we left, the line was out the door. Food: -Banana, peanut butter, cinnamon, chia toast was delicious -The egg toast topped with micro greens was great -The sausage custard pastry was nice, savory, and crispy Coffee: -Black Sesame Latte was good Overall, good coffee and pastries.
I've driven by this place a hundred times and there's almost always a line of 20-30 people outside. This morning I decided to wait in that line. Super funny that the couple behind me commented that they go here all the time and there's never a line. After about a 40 minute wait, I got to the cashier at around 10:20am. Half the pastries like the ube brioche were already out so I opted for just the lattes. I played it safe and got the Tahitian vanilla latte. I will say that it's good quality coffee. Didn't need to add sugar. It didn't come super hot though so as I took it away, I downed it pretty fast! I got my mom and aunt the ice latte version of the black sesame and the brown sugar. Sounds like both were good as well. The black sesame wasn't sweet, which was to my aunt's liking. Inside, it's very clean and not crowded. What helped is that there is a sign that tells the people in line that only 6 people at a time should line up inside. If I have the time, I'd line back up. 4.5/5 stars, but I'll round up.
Sorry for the bad picture! The salmon toast was amazing. There's a good amount of salmon, it's filling enough to be a meal. I added chili oil and I'd recommend it. The vanilla bean latte was not bad, it was solid. It was my first time ever having one and it wasn't too sweet, but it wasn't too bitter either. I think it was perfect. There was a line out the door on a Sunday morning when I went at 9:30 AM. Lots of bar seating.
Very busy coffee spot in San Mateo. I've visited twice and this is what I've ordered. Vanilla bean latte: I normally order some variation of vanilla lattes at cafes and thought Kaizen's wasn't my palette. Something off with the syrup or coffee itself? Took sips before tossing Miso caramel latte: tastes exactly how it sounds if you're curious. It was better than the vanilla bean latte Red bean pan suisse: never had anything like this and it was an amazing pastry. Would 100% get it again Black sesame kouign aman: I also haven't seen this at other cafes and thought it was good! If you like black sesame you'll definitely enjoy this Egg sando toast: filling and I appreciate the chili oil being complimentary Overall, bakery items 8.8/10; lattes 4/10
I was eager to try this place since I've heard good things about Kaizen and wanted see the hype around this place. First off, the line gets long and is known for that and I was quite surprised when I went it wasn't that long but the wait in line took longer than the service itself. It's sort of tiny inside so maybe that's why I'm not sure but my drink came out faster than expected. I got matcha strawberry and pandan matcha and it was both ok. I seen someone make a comment how the strawberry matcha tastes like strawberry milk and I totally agree. Not enough matcha and I didn't taste any matcha whatsoever. Also, the pandan matcha tastes like straight pandan milk not a hint of matcha. Nothing fancy about the drinks in my opinion and I don't get the hype or the high ratings of this place. It's not worth the line or wait I'd rather get Starbucks than this. Unfortunately I would not come back.
Randomly, you'll get luck on your side and you won't have to wait in a line that trails down the block for this place. But only randomly!! My husband hates coming here to get me my strawberry matcha with oat milk because the line takes long but there really are far and few good matcha places in San Mateo. My sister's bf also refuses to get matcha from any place else if he's in San Mateo.
Stopped by here on a Tuesday morning around 10AM to get some coffee and grab a quick bite to eat. It was quite busy but easy find street parking and we didn't wait too long after ordering but the line built up pretty fast. It's a small coffee shop with very little seating but the aesthetic was super nice and employees were welcoming. We ordered 1 Ice Miso Caramel ($7), 1 Okinawa Brown Sugar ($7), and 1 Avocado Toast ($15 + soft boiled egg - $2.50). We unfortunately weren't much of a fan of the coffee. The miso caramel wasn't that great, the miso was too overpowering it just tasted like cold miso soup with no caramel and a hint of coffee. The okinawa brown sugar was much better but was mostly milky. I did enjoy the toast even though it was quite small for the price but it tasted great along with the egg and the tomatoes were very refreshing. Experience overall was good. I probably wouldn't come back for the coffee because there's better places in the area but definitely recommend the toast/other pastries if you're okay with the price.
Not only is their coffee amazing, but their variety of toasts as well! I recently had their Open Faced Egg Sando which was delicious. Highly recommend getting it with their chili oil. Rich, savory, with very soft toasted Japanese milk bread. There aren't a lot of seats, but most people seem to get to go, so if you wait a little you'll most likely be able to snag a seat. Very friendly staff too!
Headed over in the afternoon on a Saturday around 2 pm for a little pick me up. It was busy the day we went with a line out the door and around a 20 minute wait before we ordered but the drinks came out pretty fast after. There is some seating on the sides as well as a bar area facing the baristas. Matcha Latte - I got regular sweetness and it was perfect for me. The matcha itself was pretty rich, not too overwhelming of a flavor but it gave me a good caffeine buzz. It was really smooth and lightly grassy which I enjoyed. From the balanced sweetness to the richness in flavor and color, I really enjoyed the drink and would go back again to try other ones they have.
A delightful coffee shop. The latte was the smoothest I've ever had, and they have pastries from neighbor bakehouse, one of my all time favs! Saturday morning ~930a they were quite busy, so plan accordingly! We waited in line for 10-15 mins to order, but drinks came out quick. They have a really fun menu of specialty lattes, but honestly I thought the regular latte was hard to beat. Love that they offer to warm up the croissants in a nice steam oven as well. My only suggestion is that they ask about take out/dine in at the register. We were dining in, but forgot to mention it, so our drinks came out in paper cups. I felt bad about wasting the disposable cups while sitting in the cafe:( We will definitely be back and I hope this place continues going strong! read more
Love love love their drinks! Especially the ube latte and miso caramel. I appreciate that you still get that strong coffee taste even through all of their fun flavor mixes. The matcha Calamansi sparkling drink was very refreshing with a good amount of matcha. They also sell a bunch of coffee beans and teas from overseas. The place gets pretty loud with music and conversations so wouldn't be a place I'd come to read a book or work. Parking in front can be tough but the street behind usually has tons of open spots read more

I ordered the Tahitian Vanilla Bean and asked for half sweetness since I don't like overly sweet drinks--it didn't disappoint . The flavor was smooth and well-balanced. Overall a solid drink and a nice spot, when it's not too busy. Still worth checking out! read more
I've had Kaizen bookmarked for a really long time and remember thinking that their aesthetic is on point with my fiancé's personality and have been wanting to take him here for the longest time, but never had a moment until this past weekend. He's a big ol' coffee geek and was caught off guard by just how lovely this coffee shop is. From the ambiance of the shop to all the hi-tech machines they had, he even agreed that this was a good stopping point and he'd be open to working here while he had his coffee... if his job didn't require him to be onsite. We were originally going to take our drinks to go, but after speaking with the workers, who now I'm thinking might've been the owner based on his passion for coffee, we decided to keep the drinks in-house and enjoy the shop for what it was. He opted for their unique drip and I got the ube latte and we enjoyed both drinks very much. I can see Kaizen Coffee being our new stopping point for our coffee needs. read more

Best strawberry matcha I've ever had. Always get my drinks at 50% sweetness and the fresh strawberry was perfectly matched with the earthy matcha. Will definitely be trying some other drinks next time I visit! read more
A cute little cafe that can get busy on the weekends! I highly recommend the Hojicha Latte here. On the sweet side, but the drink is incredibly nutty and creamy. Very good quality roasted hojicha. My friend also got the Miso Caramel Latte, which was really yummy too! A little savory, but compliments the caramel perfectly. A unique and must-try on the menu! The baristas here are quick despite the long line formed while we're here. Also FYI, expect to street park here! Can be pretty competitive. read more

This is the hottest spot for morning beverages. It's always buzzing in a very intentional way. Eg it's not super convenient, bad parking along el Camino but it does not stop anyone. I really love their interesting spins on matches and lattes. Products literally imported and inspired from Japan. The people are super friendly and enjoy what they provide. Open in another San Mateo or Burlingame location where pedestrians can easily access the location. I met a guy who drove from Santa Clara to get this morning fix. read more
This place is so good!! I would highly recommend. One of the best ube lattes I have tried in the area. I liked that there's a good balance between ube and coffee flavor. Most places I've tried were overpowered by either ube or coffee flavor. I ordered: -Ube Latte (5/5) -Pandan latte (4/5) (they have canned drinks in the mini fridge by the counter) The shop has limited seating and was pretty crowded the few times I've been. They are pet friendly (I always see the cutest dogs inside!). The owners are also super friendly! read more

I come here nearly every weekend despite it being a 30 min drive because it's just that good. I love their hojicha latte, it's easily the best I've had outside of Japan. Additionally their ginger pull is incredible. The service is top notch as each barista is a true craftsman. The ambiance is great. Modern and minimal w a dope quote above the coffee lab that changes daily. For a true treat, don't skimp on the toasts. Holy smokes are they unreal. Especially the smoked salmon. This place gets insanelyyyyy busy w a like wrapped outside and around so be wise and come early. Seats inside are limited. This place is a very rare gem in the Bay. Came here to do some work and read. Louder than expected but it's to be expected from a popular coffee spot. Nothing noise canceling headphones can't fix. They do have a limit on how many people can wait in line to order and it's max at 6. The shop is small but has plenty of seating if you want to work or hang out it definitely the spot. There isn't much parking but if you can find some great! I ordered the miso caramel latte, black sesame, Pistachio croissant, ube croissant, and salmon toast. The miso caramel latte had light hints of sweet and salty. Very rich and smooth but we did reduce the amount of espresso but it was prefect and not super sweet for being strong 100% sweetness. The black sesame is very good and not super sweet. The croissants are super delicious, very flakey and had perfect jams in the center of it. I also got the toast and the milk bread was so soft and delicious with the salmon giving it a pleasant salty taste balancing all the sweets we ate. Definitely a must try! read more

Came on a Monday afternoon and ooooo boi this shop was packed! The inside was really noisy which offset the minimal, calming aesthetic of the shop. I didn't mind the noise, it was just something I noticed. They ran out of the slow drip cold brew and I really wanted to try that haha. My fiancee got the hochija latte and I got their Origin Japanese coffee pour over. The pour over was good! Very flavorful and a solid medium roast coffee. I enjoyed my cup. My fiancee said her hochija was really good and similar to hochija lattes she got in Japan. Overall, I'd come back, especially to try their slow drip cold brew! read more
That Mission Mocha, my goodness. Unlike any coffee I've ever had. Stayed with family on the west coast and came here twice for that sumptuous mug of sweet and spicy and unique Mission Mocha. Go on an early weekend morning before the place is packed and enjoy a seat by the window. Get it to-stay and savor how comforting it is! Back in NY, I'm dreamin' about it. 5 stars!!!! read more
Wonderful little coffee shop that makes me want to be in San Mateo when I have absolutely no reason to be there, as I live far away. Delicious pour overs that explain what you're tasting on a paper that comes with your coffee. The baristas here are knowledgeable and very friendly. I tried the Matcha and that was delightful as well. Great place to study/work but can get unexpectedly busy at random times during the week so seating may be limited. read more

Want to preface by saying the people preparing the drinks were so nice! They checked in with customers and were overall caring! On another note, the ube latte didn't have a strong enough flavor for me (ordered less sweet so I don't know if that impacted ube flavor) ... latte wasn't particularly good, but the mango matcha seemed to be the way to go. I stumbled upon Kaizen & Coffee before picking my husband up at SFO. I wasn't sure how long it would take for him to pass security so I thought I would enjoy my morning close by at Kaizen - best decision! From the reviews it sounds like it can get very busy with a line outside, but thankfully I rolled up right when it opened around 7AM. I was pleasantly surprised by the clean interior, clean bathroom, and a very sweet barista! She took my order, and appreciated that she let me know their matcha comes sweetened and asked if I'd like to adjust the sweetness level. It's the worst when I order a matcha latte at cafes and forget to ask if it is sweetened - then I am stuck with an overly sweet matcha. I got a matcha latte and black sesame latte. I will have to say both drinks I enjoyed! The black sesame latte was unique - could definitely taste the black sesame and also the coffee. They also sell Fritz Coffee beans, which is my favorite coffee shop in Korea! If it wasn't this far from my house, I would definitely frequent Kaizen & Coffee. read more
The staff are so friendly and helpful that I feel like I've been transported to the Midwest. Seriously, I'm not used to this at all. Otherwise croissants are delicious, lattes are too, interior is modern and clean. Only kind of weird thing is the organization of the space. They put the ordering on the far right, which completely overwhelms anyone sitting there because the line takes a long time to go through. I love the personalization from the staff but I wish there was a better balance of that with how slow it takes to get through the line. I think part of that is because the food and menu are right at the counter. You can't view it ahead of time so it just takes everyone longer to look through everything. read more

I don't get the hype at all with this place. I ordered a sesame latte and it tasted like sweet dirt. Not to mention the parking situation was awful, the line was obnoxiously long to get inside and the coffee was overpriced. Not sure what's so special about this place but I am for sure not going back. read more

I wanted to like it here but have to give my honest review. I ordered the matcha latte and it was honestly not worth the price ($9 after tips). Their matcha is NOT Uji matcha nor from Japan unfortunately. The flavor of the matcha was good with mild taste and no bitterness. But it's simply way overpriced. Service was really friendly and I like the ambiance there. read more

Welcome new coffee shop is San Mateo! As all new asian places in San Mateo go.. lotta hype! Pretty lively on a Saturday afternoon. It's a smallish space but the big windows made it nice. So it does get pretty loud in here - it's a place to stop by for coffee and chit-chat, but not really a place to read. Matcha is solid. But pretty small, less ice means less drink here. Service is pretty nice. It's located on El Camino Real, a pretty big street. But there's easier neighborhood street parking in the side streets! read more

Love that this place is walking distance from me. Everything we ordered below was fresh and tasty. - Iced black sesame latte - refreshing, not overpowering - Iced ube latte - no ube flavor, but love the nuttiness flavor. - Ricotta toast - Avocado toast + soft boiled egg add on Both toasts were really good. Bread was still crispy on the outside and soft on the inside even after walking 10 minutes home. Love the touch of balsamic. read more

If you like coffee, this is the spot to visit. Beats out Starbucks in terms of being unique and even taste. They even have some cheese milk crackers from Japan. The cows in Japan work hard for those crackers, so buy some. Staff is very friendly and if you're interesting in trying something that is very unique and tasty in relation to coffee, then it's really hard to beat this place. The vibe is very modern and really takes you in. One of the best experiences I've had recently and I highly suggest everyone visiting them because it's important that we give places like this the exposure they deserve. Fantastic. read more
Food: Mango Matcha: 8/10 loved the smoothness of the matcha with mango puree. I wish the matcha was a tad stronger Service: Cashier and workers were very friendly and happy, which I love :) Ambiance: Whoever designed this place, kinda cooked, I fear -- especially the bathroom bc Toto bidet with the Dyson sink?! hell mf YEAH! Only gripe is that the high table tops aren't that comfortable but I understand they are making the most of the space they have. Also love that they have Wifi and allow dogs! The place is pretty small and the lines usually out the door don't think you'd be able to bring it inside, but I don't have a bike so I can't guarantee it
I'm diabetes so I would like to know if I can have black sesame latte without sugar?
Hi Joy, thank you for your question. Unfortunately we do not have a sugar-free option at this time. We have been considering separating the sauce and sugar for some time now, but will let you know on this thread once we do.

Yes! I can't drink caffeine and ordered the black sesame decaf.
