One of our favorite spots in the area! We discovered Kaktus Brewing while staying at the KOA next door, and what a great discovery it was! Amazing pizza, I'm SO IN LOVE with the nacho's, and the beer ain't too shabby either (I'm from the PNW and love Stouts and Porters, so I'm pretty picky about beer, lol!) Also, we were informed that our dog is welcome on the patio AND inside! This is a godsend!!!! We've since moved to a different RV park in Rio Rancho, but still make a point to come out on Sunday evenings. We LOVE sitting on one of the couches outside with our dog, eating good food, drinking some cold ones, and watching some amazing entertainment. Oh yeah, they have entertainment on the patio EVERY NIGHT! DJ's, cover bands, jazz and blues jams, and our fav: SUNDAY NIGHT BELLY DANCING! Hot tip: The Sunday afternoon Blues Jam really packs them in, so make sure to get there before 2pm if you want to get a spot to sit, or after 5pm if you're like us and just want to see the belly dancing. read more

This place gets 4.5 stars because to have a bar like this in a town of this size... it's kinda perfect. Here's why: It's got vibe, it's got a shit ton of character, it's got charm, and it still has some grit to it, like a good ol', down-home dive where you know everyone, but it's actually CLEAN. Here's a conversation I envision happening. Some dude named Randy is sipping his beer and talking to some dude named Daryl. The cordless phone with the retractable antennae rings. The owner picks up, answers then cups the phone. "Randy!! Tina's on the phone." "Tell her I'm not here!" "She says she already saw your car. She'll be here in a few." "Tell her to bring my Bicycles and some pennies. We're gonna play some cards when Carrie gets off work." That conversation should have happened by now. This place is very much UN-like most of the other completely vanilla, Ikea assembled, shiney Edison bulbed, faux vintage filled bars that have infested this town. Don't forget all those big dumbass tvs in everywhere inside all those vanilla bars either, so you can watch them just like you would when you're sitting at home, but you're not right now. You're here at this other useless bar instead, still ignoring your wife and kids and talking about your handicap at (insert name) Country Club. (Weird side rant!) Dude, instead of paper towels or useless magic wand hand dryers that never work, they have neatly folded washable washcloths that they launder. F*ck yeah dude. The staff are super nice, easy going and they all adhere to the safety standards during this shitty time. Sweet. Outside covered patios where you can bring your dog too. A kickass little stage that is just begging for some awesome touring old-school country and folk acts with a little spice to dance and clap to. Guess what? They have vegan options. Really? Hells yeah dude. Way to represent. There could be more for sure, and with just a dash more creativity... but at least you won't starve when everyone else is shoving food down in their gullets. The pizza? We had the vegan pizza and honestly the crust is darn good! Darn good. It's bready, crispy and fluffy, like it's made on a grill. Boy, if they'd experiment with this and some easy homemade "cheeses"... that would be tits. One pie feeds two people nicely for under $14! Also, the beer, because it is a brewery. Had the cider, the amber and the "Big Ben". All were very satisfying. This place is a must for those who have So-Cal country and good vibes running in their blood. read more

I love this place. Usually I come here with my husband but this last Friday I came here with some of my girlfriends. The place is small but super clean and organized. Our waitress was super nice and very helpful. I had the "Winter Warmer" beer and it was amazing. Kind of a red ale, balanced, smooth and perfect for a cold night (like the name suggests). I also had a bowl of buffalo frito pie. It was good but small and pricey. For that size, even though it was buffalo meat, I guess they still would make some money if selling it for less than $6. Based and one visit for a group of about 10 people. I have to say I love this place. The servers are extra nice friendly and helpful. So it was a Sunday afternoon and it was crowded out on the patio. I was expecting about nine friends to come. I started out inside opened a tab for myself got a blonde beer that I loved. People started showing up I added a few little tables and we were fairly comfortable and then decided to go outside. Everyone had separate tabs by the way. We changed servers probably three times because we started out inside went outside went back inside cuz the sun was too hot. They couldn't have been nicer seriously. The food was good. The kitchen was very efficient. There was plenty of parking. The beer was also very good to my liking. We had a great time. My first and only experience here was overwhelmingly negative, and that sux because I so wanted to find a good pizza place in the area. Here are my issues: 1. My order was late. I realize that was an issue with GrubHub, but Kaktus chooses to deliver via GrubHub. The order was 30 minutes later than promised. 2. Our food was cold, probably because it was sitting there waiting on the GrubHub driver. Still, they have chosen to use GrubHub for their delivery, and GrubHub is ruined our experience. 3. My wife can't eat dairy, so one of their pizzas said that it was made with goat cheese. WRONG--they use both goat cheese and mozzarella. So, my wife can't eat the pizza. 4. I called to talk to the manager, Kyle. He wasn't very helpful. He said that GrubHub was not reliable. Then, why use them for their deliveries? I'd rather they NOT deliver at all than deliver a poor experience. Kyle also said that there was a misprint in the menu, and all of their pizzas (except the vegan) have mozzarella pizza. Well, then, FIX THE MENU! Overall, I spent $50 to have two pizzas delivered, and now I regret the whole experience. My wife can't eat her pizza and mine is cold. We had excellent service and the beer is absolutely incredible! The food was quite good as well. Eclectic atmosphere, with a mixture of locals and KOA visitors. Hate to change this but not really sure what happened! Stopped by again on a busy Sunday with my partner and weren't greeted, big change from our first time. Couldn't really find a waitress, one of the other tables said the waitress we had last time was out with a busted foot and boy did it make a difference, the service wasn't great at all and we did not even want to stay for the food! Horrible!! Awful!! Gross!! When we first got there the table was filthy and sticky. We had asked the waitress to clean the table and she just wiped it down with a dry dish towel... still sticky. They were so busy and understaffed they didn't even take our drink order. Other customers were getting frustrated also. The ABQ beer scene just keeps getting better and better. Kaktus is a worthy addition. Probably the smallest place in town in terms of production, but definitely not the smallest in terms of heart. Because their production runs are smaller, they tend to turn over their beer selection faster than other places. That means that no matter how,often you go back, chances are there will be something new for you to try. Also, their beers are very sessionable, by design. Their alcohol content is generally lower than the huge 9% ABV monsters in other places. Don't get me wrong, I love a good "kick you in the ass" kind of beer. But sometimes, I want to have 3 or 4 without staggering out of the place and risking a DUI. Kaktus fits the bill. There is a great outdoor seating area. And indoors, the decor is highly eclectic and cool. They are also big on sustainable electricity and other resources. While I didn't have any of their food, it all looks awesome. I wasn't sure what to expect, having heard mixed reviews about the place, but Kaktus, at least as far as their beers go, seems here to stay. I could kick myself for not taking better notes, but here's what I remember of the beers I tried: IPA- Not your typical hop bomb and not the robust-bodied ale you can get at La Cumbre or Marble, still it was easy-sipping and sessionable. Not bad. ESB- Along the lines of the IPA, this beer again doesn't brim with hoppiness, but is smooth and sessionable and was well-balanced and clean. Dunkel- I found this to be different from what I'd expect in a Dunkel, but I still enjoyed the beer quite a bit. I found it to have a good, thick body, nuttiness and lots of malt flavor. I went for seconds on this one. Porter- The porter I remember being smooth and creamy with a good malt profile. The one thing our group noticed is that it much more resembled a brown ale, but either way it was enjoyable. Stout- This one didn't do much for me. The body lacked and it didn't have the potent flavors you'd expect, neither coffee or chocolate or toffee, so I wasn't blown away. I do remember also finding the wheat beer to be good and easy-drinking. Overall, I can echo what others have said: this place will delight those looking for a break from skull-shattering hopped-up beers. What a fun new spot to have found! Favorite part of the brewery is the outdoor patio: plenty of seating with both sun and shade, quiet, colorful, bar service comes to you, and a fireplace. While we were there today the flies were persistent but with as much rain as we've had just have to deal. And the fact that they're dog friendly always gets a thumbs up and repeat business from me! Interesting food choices; I tried a bite of the bison frito pie which had good deep flavor and a bit of heat kick. It included sour cream, Sadies salsa and shredded cheese. 4-5 beers on tap currently, the Hefe is a bit on the mild side but still a great summer beer. Service was very friendly and prompt. Three star beers in a kitchy, funky, four star environment = 3.5 stars overall rating. We only had beer (no pizza before 4 pm). IPA was light on hops. Scotch ale was very smooth. Lager light and sweet. English ale just okay. But their weird, quirky setting (coyote fencing, wandering chickens, off-the-beaten path locale) make this a memorable pit stop. Come for the experience. Love this place. No frills just good food and beer. My wife and I found this place by mistake about four years ago. We were staying at the KOA next door making sure our trailer was in good working order before going out of town. Well, we had such a good time then we make sure and go through out the year. Took my sister and brother in-law there last week and they loved it as well. We ordered two pumpkin pizzas. I reluctantly had a slice and I must say it took me by surprise but I really did enjoy it. This was a great stop! Yes, it is in a crazy weird place, but my maps app handled it just fine. The staff was friendly and accommodating. We shared a flight of 8, and found some be favorites. The ESB, the IPA, and the bock were outstanding. But, do not miss the absolutely amazing cherry cider.
