I came across Kakuna Sushi in a vietnamese food FB group. They didn't name their restaurant, only posted the trays they were selling and pricing, in vietnamese. I recognized one of their rolls, their "boujee roll," and saw that their pick-up locations were either at their Milpitas or Fremont restaurants. Interesting! Lol. Kakuna Sushi is located right next door to Juiding Flavor Restaurant. We came around 12:15pm on a Wednesday and only 3 other tables were filled, so we got seated right away. It's a no frills restaurant, super basic but clean. The lighting made it feel like we were in an office space rather than a restaurant. There were about 7-8 tables, all spaced kinda close to each other so it looked tight once they filled up. We had a stroller with us but we got a corner table so we were comfortable. Their menu was pretty extensive but we already knew what we wanted to order. They also offered a lunch/happy hour menu for donburi and certain sushi rolls from 11:15am-2:15pm / 4pm-5:30pm. We ordered.. JAPANESE NACHOS $16.99 -didn't have a description on their menu but decided to give it a try anyways. It was a variety of fresh fish and avocado coated with a sweet brown sauce, topped with cilantro and fried sweet potato strings? The chunks of fish and avocado were pretty big..wished they were cut smaller. The sauce was pretty good but a bit thick/heavy for my liking. I did like that they gave us A LOT of fried wonton chips..more than needed. 3.75/5* GAIJIN ROLL $14.99 -yellowtail, tuna, avo-torched salmon, garlic chips, house sauce cilantro. Refreshing and very flavorful with the house sauce and cilantro! Kinda tangy too. I enjoyed the creamy avocado with fresh fish..it was just a good combo overall. Only issue was that the rice wasn't as soft as we would like. 4/5* HOT MESS ROLL $11.99 -crab, spicy tuna, onion, deep fried. Topped with tuna, tobiko, jalapeños, unagi sauce, cajun mayo, green onion. Very thick and heavy. They went heavy on the imitation crab and tuna but there was no flavor. The outside wasn't crispy either. This roll was underwhelming compared to the other two items. 2/5* There was only 1 waiter the whole time we were there but he was attentive and easy to wave down. My mother, who does not eat raw fish, wanted "sushi" on her birthday. I, the oldest son, the best looking sibling (dm me for pics of me and my sister, it's easy to know who's more blessed), took my mom to "American" sushi and got a bunch of cooked stuff. I also had just gotten back from vacation where I indulged myself in sashimi, so "American" sushi would be a nice change of pace. Temper your expectations. This isn't Japanese-Japanese. There's Mexican music blasting from the kitchen. This is the true American "Japanese food" experience. Does that mean the food is bad? IT ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT. I thought everything I got was bomb. My favorite was cheesus roll. It's very cheesy and the right amount of savory. Didn't feel sick eating it, unlike most "Japanese" places. We originally just got 3 rolls, but apparently we can get one more for free. We got the Crunch roll. No regrets there. The name is not a misnomer. It's hella crunchy. Umami roll is solid. It's fish skin, bonito flakes, and some other things I can't explain. Not fishy tasting unlike many fish skin dishes. Service is good. Our guy was juggling all the tables and filling our waters before the annual California drought hit our throats. Price is good. Was very pleasantly surprised with our bill upon checkout. I've never complained about being served TOO much sashimi! Sashimi salad was fantastic. The salmon to lettuce ratio was 60-40 which is way more generous than I expected. Salmon Lover (10pc salmon sashimi) also had generous pieces and the fish was super fresh and buttery. We also got the Citrus Roll which had some weird flavors, I wouldn't order it again, but again, super generous portions of salmon inside and tuna on the outside. We went on a Monday at 5:45pm and there was plenty of seating. The atmosphere inside isn't super cozy, there isn't any decor and the walls are very white. You can hear the Latin music playing from the kitchen which definitely doesn't fit the Japanese vibe but it's kind of cute. Would recommend this sushi restaurant ONLY for sashimi or nigiris. We ordered some of the rolls on the menu and did not like any of them because there was way too much of everything on them especially sauce. In addition we ordered the tempura udon which lacked a lot of flavor. Had a great first time here otherwise with good service from waiters and waitresses compared to other tables. We arrived at this location to a party abruptly leaving and scolding the waitress. It was my first time here and it seems like a popular play with most of the tables filled and their "extended" dining area. It took the waitress a while to take our orders because it seems like there's only two of them and every table is pulling them asking for something. They seemed so burnt out and tired that they messed up our orders a couple of times. I didn't get a picture of all of our rolls because they all came at separate times but some were a hit and most of them were misses. Their Kakuna roll was probably my favorite one, their "garlic" edamame was very disappointing because it lacked everything. My party was thoroughly disappointed with the service, lack of attention, the taste of the sushi, and this is probably the first time, the general public ratings didn't reach our expectations. No frills place that's extremely generous with portion size and fish to rice quantity. Ordered take out from here multiple times and it's been very consistent. My go to is the orange blossom roll & I love how the salmon has always been fresh. My partner loves baked sushi & goes for the boujee roll but I personally think they can be a little too much/too saucy & if you get a bunch of baked rolls it all starts to taste similar. One of the baked rolls we got (the one in the foil from the pictures below) had small scallops on the top - wasn't a huge fan of the texture. I wasn't quite sure if I went to the right place when I arrived the parking lot. The restaurant is located in a mall that looks a bit run down, there was no one inside (perhaps because we were too early). We did go in because of the 4.5 star review on yelp. We ordered 3 moriawase (nigiri and sashimi) and a nutcracker roll. The presentation was amazing because the moriawase were on a stepped display. We were excited to take pictures. This is no doubt one of my fav sushi spots in the Bay Area for some high quality, fresh, affordable sushi. When I can't decide where to eat and want a feel good meal or want to satisfy my sushi cravings, I know I will most likely end up eating from here! This time I had the California Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, Shrimp Tempura Roll, Spicy Salmon Roll. Loved all of them. The size of the sushi rolls is pretty big compared to a lot of other sushi spots in the area. They have low sodium soy sauce option which I prefer. Their service is fast and the servers are pretty sweet. It's not a fancy dine in place so expect a casual sushi joint vibe. I highly recommend trying their special rolls some of which I have tried in the past and I find them great value for money and delicious at the same time. I went here in year 2023 in the month of June with my bf to pick up my online order at night before they close. I ordered 12 orders of sushi rolls. Some with shrimp and some without. I am allergic to shrimp so 7 orders have no shrimp and the rest has shrimp. When I got there to Kakuna Sushi to pick my online orders of 12 sushi rolls, the sushi rolls were nicely packed in clear containers but not labeled with their sushi roll names. So I asked this guy who claims to be the manager to please put a label on the sushi rolls since I explained I am allergic to shrimp. This male Asian manager gave me an attitude saying we do not label out sushi rolls. I asked him why not. He said we never label them and next time you tell us early. I said "How can we let you know if it was ordered online and there is no such thing on the website to write special instructions?". This male manager scowled at me and gave me the order with an attitude. When we left, that was the last time we ordered there. Do not go to this place. Go to Sendai Sushi or V Sushi or Yoshi Sushi in Milpitas. If you want the best variety of sushi rolls, go to Ariake at Blossom Hill Rd. Iin San Jose. It is the original rotating water revolver and they have many of cooked ot baked sushi rolls, raw sashimi and raw sushi rolls. They all taste the best and they will label your food if you requeat and the servers and managers are not rude. Do not go to Kakuna Sushi. Small sushi and ramen spot in Milpitas. There was a wait when we went, we waited about 20 minutes for a table for 2. They have yelp waitlist so that's good to know for next time. The restaurant is very small so either wait outside or in your car if you'd like. We had the beef udon, kakuna roll, lion king roll, salmon/avocado roll, and soft shell crab. We also had hot tea. Prices were fair. My favorite was the kakuna roll and the soft shell crab, the sauce was different (not a tempura sauce) but it was good. The lion king had a lot of wet ingredients on top and I was not a big fan of that, I like it when it gets baked into the salmon and it gets crispy. The beef udon was delicious! The entrance is unassuming and the interior is pretty nice and clean. We were able to be seated instantly since no one was there, and the service was fast. We ordered the Kakuna Roll - the namesake - , the Gaijin Roll, and Takoyaki. I really liked the Kakuna Roll! It was surprisingly good for the price point and tasted really fresh. The portion was very good. The Gaijin roll is a bit pickle-y, so if you like that kind of more sour taste, then that is the roll for you. I ordered to go ahead of time, so not much service - I was not really acknowledged either upon walking in. Only a couple of people dining in at the time of my arrival, but my order took a pretty long time and I still had to wait after arriving around the time that it should had been ready. I tried their Salmon Maki and Salmon Nigiri. Decent size for the price point, but sushi could had been a bit better quality. The rolls are pretty sauced up and have a lot of rice as well, so make sure you're hungry before going! Summary (tl;dr): Quality sushi, sashimi, and rolls with generous (and I mean generouusss) portion sizes and fantastic presentation relative to the price in a quiet strip mall with sometimes slow service. I'll be honest I mostly get takeout from here, but the remarks about the food are the same whether you dine-in, takeout, or get delivery. Food (5/5 for the sushi and rolls for sure; 3/5 for the cooked stuff) The sushi, sashimi, and rolls are definitely the stars here. The portion size is very, very generous. The fish itself is usually fairly fresh, not omakase level or fresh-from-japan level, but still pretty good. I go a lot and I have yet to have a bad fish quality experience with them. If you go look at some of the photos here posted by people, you'll see the tiktok/instagram reel friendly *moriawase* (aka poor-man's omakase) that they present on this wooden circular staircase-type platter. The rolls are also large and substantial and presented very well without going overboard with the rice (think - Sen Dai). The prices for the specialty rolls are approximately in the range of $12-18? Considering the sizes of the rolls you get are at least 50% larger than many other places (excluding Sen Dai) without compromising on quality, you're definitely getting your money's worth here. I will have to say, the cooked food items are just average. The bento/combination plates are ok as a whole, but like the quality of the meats are just ok and they tend to slightly overcook them. Service (4/5) It's a small restaurant and I think the front service staff can be understaffed most likely at times, although they've been efficient when I've been there. I'm just assuming based on the capacity of the restaurant at peak hours compared with the number of actual waiters. The waiters also perform double duty too, taking to-go orders or finishing packaging up to-go orders in between managing the in-restaurant customers. I think the kitchen is probably pretty well staffed though, because I've never really noticed food taking all too long to come out. Ambiance (3.5/5) It's in a tired looking strip mall with an ok-amount of parking that inexplicably fills up sometimes. I don't understand why the parking lot can fill up when the other places that command attention are one other restaurant, a liquor store, and a dance studio in one of the corners. The inside of the restaurant was actually recently renovated and is clean and newish looking although looks fairly sterile. It was previously very tiny and now has much better capacity. I think they bought out the place next door and broke down the wall to open up the restaurant. But as a result it kind of looks like two different seating areas (one with pretty sterile fluorescent bars, and one that has more normal lighting). They've also played music before on occasion I recall? But it comes from a small bluetooth speaker so it's not like a true music system. Other notes: They actually have two other locations. One in Fremont and one in East SJ off McKee and White. I haven't been to those two other locations but I've looked at the yelp profiles before and I would imagine the food portion of the reviews are probably pretty similar. read more

Happy to report that my favorite sushi spot in Fremont now has an outpost in Milpitas, and that it lives up to its predecessor. Generous bento boxes and sushi rolls, thick slices of sashimi, and even ramen are now available to South Bay folks at a great value. I usually do bento boxes with maximum add-ons (California rolls, vegetable tempura, and sashimi) or the sashimi salad, and then unagi (if I had unlimited funds, I'd be guilty of decimating the eel population, one unagi Don or hand roll at a time). read more
