Summary (tl;dr): Quality sushi, sashimi, and rolls with generous (and I mean generouusss) portion sizes and fantastic presentation relative to the price in a quiet strip mall with sometimes slow service. I'll be honest I mostly get takeout from here, but the remarks about the food are the same whether you dine-in, takeout, or get delivery. Food (5/5 for the sushi and rolls for sure; 3/5 for the cooked stuff) The sushi, sashimi, and rolls are definitely the stars here. The portion size is very, very generous. The fish itself is usually fairly fresh, not omakase level or fresh-from-japan level, but still pretty good. I go a lot and I have yet to have a bad fish quality experience with them. If you go look at some of the photos here posted by people, you'll see the tiktok/instagram reel friendly *moriawase* (aka poor-man's omakase) that they present on this wooden circular staircase-type platter. The rolls are also large and substantial and presented very well without going overboard with the rice (think - Sen Dai). The prices for the specialty rolls are approximately in the range of $12-18? Considering the sizes of the rolls you get are at least 50% larger than many other places (excluding Sen Dai) without compromising on quality, you're definitely getting your money's worth here. I will have to say, the cooked food items are just average. The bento/combination plates are ok as a whole, but like the quality of the meats are just ok and they tend to slightly overcook them. Service (4/5) It's a small restaurant and I think the front service staff can be understaffed most likely at times, although they've been efficient when I've been there. I'm just assuming based on the capacity of the restaurant at peak hours compared with the number of actual waiters. The waiters also perform double duty too, taking to-go orders or finishing packaging up to-go orders in between managing the in-restaurant customers. I think the kitchen is probably pretty well staffed though, because I've never really noticed food taking all too long to come out. Ambiance (3.5/5) It's in a tired looking strip mall with an ok-amount of parking that inexplicably fills up sometimes. I don't understand why the parking lot can fill up when the other places that command attention are one other restaurant, a liquor store, and a dance studio in one of the corners. The inside of the restaurant was actually recently renovated and is clean and newish looking although looks fairly sterile. It was previously very tiny and now has much better capacity. I think they bought out the place next door and broke down the wall to open up the restaurant. But as a result it kind of looks like two different seating areas (one with pretty sterile fluorescent bars, and one that has more normal lighting). They've also played music before on occasion I recall? But it comes from a small bluetooth speaker so it's not like a true music system. Other notes: They actually have two other locations. One in Fremont and one in East SJ off McKee and White. I haven't been to those two other locations but I've looked at the yelp profiles before and I would imagine the food portion of the reviews are probably pretty similar. read more

I am so surprised the quality of fish I received, most of the time when your order nigiris under $22 normally you don't expect toros but mine came with tuna and salmon toro plus scallops. And not to mention that the scallop is so sweet that tasted like it was Japanese scallops! The side order of toro that I ordered tasted good but pricey. ( 2 for $10) when I compare to the nigiri set! I called on a Saturday at 11:15am to ask if they were opened. They answered and asked if they put me on hold. No problem. But then 13 minutes gone by and no one got back to me. I was hoping to order ahead through the phone but it looks like I had to go there in person to order. We were already on the way so I ordered when I got there. They said we had to wait 20-25 minutes and luckily it only took like 15 minutes for 4 type of sushi rolls. The sushi selection all sounded and looked really good. worst sushi my friends and i have ever had. we got the premium ayce option ($~47pp) but the quality that was served to us was completely inedible. the spicy tuna was BROWN and the nigiri pieces tasted super fishy. we told the manager that it was inedible and asked if its ok to just not charge us for left over pieces since we only ordered one round. he was not willing to work with us and still charged us $87 for the extra on top of our ayce portions. safe to say it was worth $87 to not eat the leftovers. definitely would not recommend. read more

Was craving sushi so made my way here. It's a hole in the wall for sure, near a gas station. Ambience: Small sushi place than most with a few tables of two and several tables of four. Most people do take out here. I decided to dine in. The server was very attentive and checked in on our party and refilled our water too. I have NOT seen any other place have sushi come out as fast as this one. Food: I ordered the nigiri moriawase (chef's choice) and the Kakuna roll. Wow, the nigiri moriawase had the thickest cuts of fish I've ever had! It was SO fresh and good. I believe they put some wasabi on the top so you don't need to add more. We finished the nigiri moriawase fast. The Kakuna roll reminded me of a lion king roll except I could taste all the fresh ingredients added to it and it's not baked. I don't recommend dipping it in soy sauce since the roll is already saucy, adding more soy sauce can make it too salty. I don't know any other sushi place in the Bay Area that has such affordable sushi than this one and we ordered just enough for a party of two. Came here at 6:30 on a Wednesday for dinner with my friend. It got very crowded around 7; all the tables got full and there were lots of takeout orders. And for good reason! The service was exceptional, the space was clean, and the portions are worth the money. There's free tea! This is probably the most beautiful chirashi bowl I've ever had. It was filling, tasted fresh, and I had rice leftover. I started with my favorite fishes first (salmon and tuna) because I wasn't sure if I could finish it. It's funny because they have an online ordering system which has photos that doesn't resemble the actual product at all. It's much prettier! My friend got a Gozilla roll and a chicken katsu. The Umami roll was quite strange: we expected full pieces of fried salmon skin on top of the roll, not little pieces of it within the roll. We ordered dinner to-go on a Sunday evening, and parking was easy to find in the shared lot. The outside of the restaurant was pretty basic, and the inside was quite full for dine-in. The workers offered immediate and friendly service when we entered and didn't rush us as we viewed the menu. There was about a 15-20 minute wait for our food to be ready, after we ordered. We got the Nigiri Combo, Kakuna signature roll, and the Volcano baked roll. The Volcano was super delicious with a nice crunch from the shrimp tempura, the salmon moist with a nice consistency, and really good flavor overall. They have a variety of Japanese food. It's like having 3 Japanese restaurants in one with their sushis, bentos and ramens. Had the OMG sushi which had tempura shrimp, imitation crab and langostino tempura as proteins. It had avocado and drizzles of slightly spicy mayo sauce. Rice was seasoned and slightly sweet but could have a little more of the rice wine vinegar seasoning. First time of both having langostino sushi and having it prepared tempura style. It's like having popcorn chicken but with crawfish. The crawfish was very mild in flavor. The spicy mayo sauce was the main flavoring of this sushi. Was the best of the dishes I ordered. Also had the Hokkaido sushi which was a salmon roll topped with a generous amount of chopped scallops. I usually don't like raw sushi but I didn't mind this one because the scallop was tossed in a light creamy dressing. Both salmon and scallops were not fishy at all. Also had the Black Garlic Ramen. It had a pork broth, a good amount of pork belly, some bamboo shoots, shredded cabbage, seaweed and two egg halves. The broth was good but not as strong and deep tasting as others I've had. You can tell it's pork broth, tonkatsu style, but it didn't have the deep creamy concentrated taste of pork boiled for hours. The pork belly were in thicker cuts. The noodles were al dente and retained the chewy bite texture which I like. All dishes were reasonably priced. Staff were very nice and seemed to help each other take care of all tables so we didn't have to wait for our own server to get what we needed. We sat in a table for two but the female staff actually offered us a bigger table for more space which was very thoughtful. Definitely 5 stars for the staff. There were two dining areas, one right as you enter the restaurant and the bigger one in an adjacent room. Looks like they just renovated the floors and walls. Clean and spacious. I cherish my experience here! I ordered the rainbow roll without sauce. The rainbow roll was stated to come with assorted fish. One thing I wish is that rainbow roll mentioned that it had shrimp instead of a general description of assorted fish, because I have a shrimp allergy and almost consumed a piece with shrimp, which would have ended badly. I came a few weeks ago during the soft opening phase where they were having a buy 2 rolls get 1 free. I loved that deal. The restaurant was small but quaint inside. It was very clean with a nice, quiet, atmosphere. The servers were really attentive. They stuffed the rolls really well with lots of filling, and there were very thick cuts of fish on top. There was plenty of crab in the California roll. This was a great and memorable sushi place! TLDR: Fish n Chips Roll We came in around 1pm on a Friday, and we were the only ones there. I'm conflicted tho. On one hand, I'd like to keep it that way, so I can always get a seat here and enjoy the great food. But the other hand, I'm not sure I have enough income to keep this place floating.... But anyway, this might very well be the best-kept Sushi secret in Milpitas. I like Sendai, but this place is cleaner, EMPTIER (for now), and the menu is relatively inexpensive (for the Bay). I'd choose this one over that, any time (Especially work lunch). We ordered a bento, Salmon Sama. It's basically grilled Salmon SHOULDER, with a dipping sauce. One thing you should know about my wife... she has a bland taste. She doesn't like sauces, so this dish was right up her alley. Me? I dunked the salmon in the dipping sauce, which was pretty tasty... vinegary, sweet, tangy. I'm not sure what's special about the shoulder, but the server made it a point to mention it. So... SHOULDER. I didn't even know fish HAD shoulders. The bento portion was a bit on the smaller side, compared to other places. It didn't have rolls for instance, just 2 gyoza (which were fried very well, Crunchy), a small salad, and a big clump of rice. The stars were the rolls though. They are BIG, inexpensive, and oh... TASTY. Our favorite by far was the Fish n Chips roll. It has tempura FISH! We've never seen that in a roll, it's always shrimp SHRIMP SHRIMP. Not good for people with gout and shellfish allergies, respectively. It also has a nice crunchy thing on top, which we loved. Did I mention it's huge? Couldn't stuff an entire slice in my mouth. I had to take a couple bites to finish the delicious monstrosity. The second roll we ordered was the Lion King, which came out HOT. Like, I burned my tongue hot! But that's what made it unique and GOOD. The fish itself was buttery and silky. The slice was more manageable, but I could probably swallow it without chewing. It's THAT soft. It was also delicious, but I prefer the Fish n Chips a little bit more because of the contrasting texture of crunchy and soft. The Lion King is ALL soft and creamy. Also super filling, so be careful. The staff was very friendly and attentive, (probably because we were the only customers for a while... a construction crew came when we were finishing up). One thing to note is, that this place isn't an AUTHENTIC Japanese restaurant. But that's all I can say, without running afoul of the stringent YELP robots. I personally don't care (Don't delete me, Robot!), but there may be some of you who prefer a more authentic experience. The sushi is very good. The menu look inviting and based on the past Yelp reviews, I ordered a couple of rolls that I probably would not have. Both were delicious. I wish this location had their liquor license so I could wash down my sushi with a Sapporo or a tall hot sake. The interior decoration is non-existent. It's like they just moved in yesterday or don't care at all about theme or ambiance. It gave my dining experience a weird vibe eating there. You need to make sure you order the right items from the menu. There are sime dishes that work and some that don't. In general, stick with the sushi's and stay away from the rice bowls or the ramen. I've always had an appreciation for the artistry, technique/skill, and of course yumminess that goes into sushi rolls. And once upon a time, I used to think of the best sushi restaurants in the Bay Area and a few places came to mind-- Sen Dai, Mizu, and Cha Cha, just to name a few. This all changed after going to Kakuna Sushi. So when I saw the beauty of my first Kakuna roll, I immediately started drooling. It was HUGE (and not because it was stuffed with rice-- in fact, the ratio of quality ingredients to sushi rice was perfect). It was COLORFUL and VIBRANT. And I literally have never seen such a beautifully crafted sushi roll. And after mustering up the courage to take a bite out of this masterpiece, that's when I knew that I'd just discovered my new ALL TIME FAVORITE SUSHI RESTAURANT. Then I tried another enormous roll...SAME RESULT. Flavors were bursting and it was beautifully made. I proceeded to try another roll. And another. And then another. Each one was just, if not more, impressive than the last. To top it off, Kakuna's menu prices are extremely fair and are a much better value than other sushi joints (especially considering the MASSIVE portions and quality of craftsmanship and ingredients). In addition, service is friendly and welcoming every time I've entered to pickup my takeout order. Final thoughts: My wife and I have been getting takeout from Kakuna at least once a week for the past month. Each time, the sushi rolls have been consistently made with quality and are simply beautiful. Im confident that there isn't another sushi restaurant that can rival Kakuna at this point.
