Man, I was not expecting the kolache to be that good. I ordered one on a whim, and just had the wonderfully helpful and friendly cashier choose one for me. She gave me a Philly cheesesteak one. It made me so happy. Thank you! I'm used to Texas gas station kolaches, so used to disappointment. This one did not disappoint. The bread is soft and sweet, really similar to a a Chinese baked bun. I couldn't wait to try the "brunch bites" Texans have been enjoying. A few months ago, they opened in San Francisco. I've had a version of these baked goods thanks to my talented Eastern European grandmother who made large loaf-sized rolls filled with either a thick poppyseed paste or homemade apricot jam. So the bar was set high! In we went and were greeted warmly. First, Kalaches' are delicious and they're available in both savory and sweet combinations. They have delectable fillings like Philly Cheesesteak, Texas Style (sausage, cheese and jalapeño), sausage and gravy and so many more varieties. Kalaches are perfectly handheld and made for walking and noshing or driving and noshing. Sweet Kalaches are flat pastries with a tempting array of fillings like poppyseed, Nutella and strawberry, blueberry cream and more. Unlike the savory bites, the dough tasted almost flat and hard like it'd been overly brushed with an egg wash. I'm not a baker so I'm guessing a smaller sweet kalache with less dough and a deeper filling would be more flavor "full". I just didn't get that depth of flavor like the savory Kalaches, especially the poppyseed that didn't have that pillowy bite. I understand the pricing at $7 each (savory, sweet bites are a bit less expensive). It's expensive to run a business in San Francisco and they use excellent, tasty combinations of fillings. We walked in and were instantly welcomed by the worker, who let us know they had all the flavors in stock since we arrived early. The shop is small, but it has a few tables and chairs both inside and outside if you want to sit, enjoy your bites, and hang out for a bit. I got the Philly cheesesteak and my boyfriend got the Texas style- both were very flavorful and made for the perfect breakfast bite. The worker even offered to warm them up a bit more, which made the warm, cheesy meat texture melt in my mouth with every bite. I had booked marked this place for when they first came to SF but I am never in this area, so I made a point to come here on Saturday morning and detour to Costco, hey gotta my my trip worthwhile so I picked three, I tired the breakfast one because I didn't eat my breakfast this morning , veggies one and forgot what other one was. All were good, the cashier lady told me the owners were in Texas and brought their thicker dough version of Kalaches to San Francisco. It is good with their twist on it. I stopped by this place on a whim for a quick bite and was pleasantly surprised. We got three savory kolaches - sausage jalepeno egg and cheese, roasted veggies, and the chicken enchilada. They were all so good that it was hard to choose a favorite, each individually flavorful and generously filled. In addition, I got the classic iced matcha latte (they use ceremonial grade) and was very happy with the preparation of the order. The service was quick and the cashier was kind. I used to live in Houston for a little bit and miss getting kolaches. This place serves it similar but good in its own right. I got a chicken for the savory and raspberry cheese for the sweet one. The guy behind the counter heated it for a minute so it was nice in hot. It's a perfect size for a small snack for lunch. They were out of the pepperoni but I'll be back to try that out. read more

Savory and sweet kolaches [San Francisco CA] So excited to see a kolache bakery open in NorCal... these delightful traditional Czech pastries have finally arrived in the Bay Area! Yes, it's a 2-hour drive for me to San Francisco but at least not 6-hours. Until now I've only known about two Kolache Factory locations in SoCal (in Tustin and Huntington Beach). We were greeted by Robi, co-owner of the husband-and-wife duo. Very pleasant to talk to... gifted me some promotional items. This was only their first week open for business, grand opening Monday, Aug 18, 2025. Prices are on the high side. whoa! $6.75 for a kolache is pretty expensive compared to $4.90 in SoCal. I blame the San Francisco tax. At almost 10:30a options are sparse and almost out. I got the last of the Egg & Cheese, and hubby chose an Ham, Egg & Cheese flavor. The treats are a good size, fist-sized pastries. Interior is counter service. There are no seating inside so you will need to get it to go. The kolaches were warmed up for us which was delightfully delicious after our first, second, and third bites The business name is not a misspelling. They took over Pizza Squared. Open for takeout only, no seating. For grand opening week, they have a different giveaway each day. Today is a free $15 gift card. Also purchased 4 other savory kolaches (sausage & egg, bacon jalapeño, etc.) for others. There were no prices on the menu so I was surprised when being rung up that these were $7 each. Kolaches in SF?! Have you been to legendary Czech Stop and wanted some in San Francisco too? Well, Kalaches doesn't come close to Czech Stop (a national treasure), but they still field some excellent kolaches! Kalaches has both sweet and savory kolaches, though their menu is in the middle of updating, probably due to just having opened a short while ago. I got a large amount to share between my Texas transplant friends and myself. The dough lacks sweetness compared to what you would find from a Texas store, and overall less salty for their savory kinds. The sausage is spot on with the type/style of sausage, being used in their "Texas style". Notably, the cheese is higher quality than what you would typically find, but I won't gripe about that. Other than that, Kalaches has nailed it really well with their kolaches! The price is steep, but that's to be expected in downtown SF. Out of all the kolaches I tried (strawberry, strawberry-nutella, sausage egg, sausage jalapeno, and the Texas style), the Texas style is a clear winner and what I would get next time I'm back. The Texas style was offered as spicy and non-spicy, and the spicy version was amazing! All were consistent with their dough being well made and having a good amount of filling. When I went, their online menu doesn't quite match up with their in-store offerings. They were also out of a few kolaches by noon (notably, there were neither any savory vegetarian nor cheese-free kolaches left available). The store is pretty small, catering for to-go, with minimal seating (outdoor + indoors) but service is quick as the staff is fast on getting the kolaches into boxes for you. Two display cases, one for savory and one for sweet. They were very kind with helping me place them into separate boxes for the multiple parties I was ordering for. One downside is the kolaches were cooler than I would have liked if I was to eat them immediately near the store, perhaps since I arrived around noon. However, they were fantastic after being heated in an oven for a short time. I'll definitely be back again to scratch my kolach itch! read more

I've been craving a kolach for so long ever since the first time I've had one in SoCal. Finally one has opened close to home and I gotta say my cravings are satisfied. We only found out this places opened because of toogoodtogo and I'm glad we did. The kolach's were made perfectly and filled with flavor. In our bag we got three items and our favorite has to be the Texas. Everything is already made and displayed so you can be in and out quick. The kolaches are solid and given the fact that they're the only show in town, they're more than good enough. Sure the ones in Texas are maybe a little better (and definitely cheaper) but this isn't Texas and Texas prices aren't realistic given SF rents either. So if you've got a kolache itch to scratch, this will do it. read more

I just got back from Kalaches on their grand opening day! I realized that I missed out on their $15 gift certificate for folks on the first day! In this visit, I got the Veggie Omelet for lunch and it was $7 . It was savory and the crust itself had the sweetness of a croissant. Although it was a bit pricey, I feel it was a fair value given it was full of veggies and filling and most likely made fresh everyday! The Kolache is a staple in Czech and reminds me of a Piroshki , which were all over when we lived in Seattle and popularized by Piroshky Piroshky. The staff were friendly and mentioned they had done this concept in Texas . Hope to see their success here and they should take a playbook from the aforementioned and do the same for Korache in SF! read more

Kalaches: Came here early, a bit after 7am and you'll be greeted by owner- Robi Inside you'll find a 2 display case, 1 savory and 1 sweet. The savory display case has many varieties and I opted for Sausage, Egg & Cheese ($6.75). You can ask to get it warmed up but I ate it as-is which is still fresh & warm. I was surprised when biting into this! It was soft, warm & simply delicious! Also, this kalache is shockingly heavy for its size. The filling is great & the ingredients are delicious! I will start with the disclaimer that I lived in Texas (kolache central) for over a decade, so I am quite picky about these savory pastries. I ordered the Texas Jalapeno, Bacon, Egg & Cheese, and a Blueberry Cream Cheese and asked for them to be warmed up. While they were perfectly serviceable, only the blueberry one hit me with the nostalgia, making me want more. The two savory kolaches were a little to big in size for my taste, leaving the bread too doughy and the interior not hot enough all the way through. You might think heating it longer in the microwave would fix that, but the longer you have to nuke kolaches the more water they lose, turning them into chewy balls of leather with blazing hot fillings. Slightly smaller portions works out better in most cases. On top of that, the jalapenos in the Texas kolache had no heat to them, no jalapeno flavor at all really. Both of them were very skimpy on the cheese as well, didn't really taste any at all in the bacon & egg one. The blueberry cream cheese saved the day however. Being a flatter profile with the "filling" on top, meant it heated more evenly and thoroughly. And the taste was perfect, exactly like the ones I fell in love with in TX. I will come back, but I will probably stick to the sweet kolaches on the next trip! read more
