First of all, the atmosphere here is warm and welcoming! This is the type of place where everyone feels at home! Super open dining area, highly conducive to conversations with your neighbors. Then there's the food.. One word; THE MOST AMAZING FOOD IN TOWN!!! As an 18 year strong vegan forcibly supplanted in the South, vegan cuisine outside of my kitchen is rare at best. I came to town for business and was elated to find this place! I then proceeded to eat here on the Friday and Saturday (my heart wept when I learned they were closed on Sunday) but they were the best two meals I've had eating out in a long time!! What an amazing place! I called in to check their hours and the owner, Omar, welcomed me to come on by even though they were closing in 10 minutes. My partner (who is vegan) and I were on a bike trip from Maine to Florida and by the time we got to Daytona Beach we were worn out and hungry. I rode over to the cafe and Omar loaded me up with a delicious and wholesome dinner that brought us back to life. The mac and cheese was the best we've ever had. Omar makes the cheese himself from potatoes and coconut milk and it is so much better than anything you can buy from a store. The spicy mushrooms are exceptional. Visited Daytona in October. A New York vegan, trying to get decent food in a chicken and rib town??? Kale Cafe was like an oasis to me. Omar was kind enough to let me sample everything before I made a decision. I bought a large plate at such a reasonable price. Every time I came I ordered the kale salad. It is to die for. I asked Omar for the secret ingredient. He said his wife made it with love. Damn skippy!!!, because I LOVED IT!! I came back twice with friends. Walked by while doing Christmas shopping. It looked interesting so we went in. The atmosphere was casual and friendly. We tried the entree of the day vegan lasagna, which was excellent, as well as the yams, cabbage in coconut milk, the the very tasty kale salad. This review is in reference to my visit to Kale Café today but I've had similar experiences in the past. As much as I love that there is a vegan restaurant local, I will not be back. The food has been hit or miss each time. Monday I saw on Facebook that there would be chicken and waffles on Wednesday and I got excited. Today, I met a friend for lunch and was looking forward to the special. As per usual, we walk in and get absolutely no greeting. A very unpleasant employee eventually made her way over to us. OK, fine, I'm not here for the people. So I order the special chicken and waffles. For my sides, I get jerk mushrooms and mac n cheese. The employee slaps the mushrooms on my plate getting the mushroom juice all over my waffle. I don't say anything I just want to eat at this point. The waffle was so hard it literally broke off two prongs of the plastic fork with my first attempt at getting it on the fork. The mac n cheese and jerk mushrooms were good and the only redeeming parts of this experience. We were the only people there when we first got there. While eating, presumably friends of the establishment came in and were immediately offered a freshly made waffle. Waffles only take a few minutes to make, why not make fresh for all patrons? Several more people came in and were also not greeted by the very unhappy employee either. The area where you pay with card is so sticky and caked with food or dirt. I'm not talking it got splashed a bit today, this is a substantial amount of time's worth of gunk type deal. I want to love this place so bad but sadly, I've been hung out to dry (like that waffle) too many times. read more

I go here all the time food is fairly good. But since they opened a second location the quality has gone down. I ordered a vege burger without a bun which was burned and a side of rice and beans, mostly rice that was hard and tasteless. I was charged $12 and the side was a spoon of rice and beans that was $5. Outrageous I usually get the brown stew tofu and I love it but lately it is over cooked and the tofu is tough and burned. Very disappointed I will have to find a new place. read more

This is just frustrating. As a DSC Professor at the News Journal Center across the street from Kale Café, it was only a matter of time before I tried this place. I doubt that most of my students realize that I am a vegetarian (not fully vegan) but I have heard mixed reviews from students of multiple ages, backgrounds and interests. The good word has been primarily regarding the juice options. In any case... I entered an empty restaurant. I asked the young lady behind the counter about some of the options. She was very soft-spoken and difficult to understand but I could make out that she said something about the jerk mushrooms being very good. Great; I love mushrooms! So, after perusing the menu, I decided to go with a few sides. Other than the mushrooms, I ordered the spicy coleslaw. I then asked the young woman if she wouldn't mind if I stepped outside for just a second while she plated-up my order as I had just seen a colleague pass by and wanted to say hello. I was gone for, maybe, a total of two minutes. Well, bad timing. I did not see her fill the containers and, when I returned my food was in a brown paper bag. I paid and walked back over to the Arts Center. When I opened my bag I almost cried. Both round plastic containers were the same style and size as a "medium" container at The Whole Foods olive bar but they were only a quarter to a third full. The actual amount of food for which I had just spent $12.00 ($6.00 a side), plus a full 20% tip, was paltry! Miniscule even! I had wanted a light lunch but this was ridiculous. There was maybe a total of 8-10 button mushrooms. For $6.00! The flavor was nice but nothing more than seasoning and a bit of oil. The spicy coleslaw was cabbage with a few slugs of hot sauce and a squeeze of lemon or lime --- that is all --- and it was the serving size of a condiment cup at a diner. I was appalled. And still hungry. Who knows if this is their standard serving size or if this was a reticent employee but I don't think I will take the chance on finding out by trying this place again. I've been to many Vegan restaurants around the world but this one has a special magic in the atmosphere and the food. I love the family who own it. Camille and Omar are awesome. The kids are adorable, the food is spectacular (WHY can't I make my kale at home taste half as good as their kale salad?!) I love playing the piano, dancing with the kids, meeting like minded people. Oh and remember -they DO have seats out in front but they have a whole beautifully decorated outdoor area in the back to eat which is great during the sunset. Also if you can't find parking go around back. you can walk i that way too. I love love love it here and it's my home away from home! read more

I love trying new things. Today a friend and I tried this place. I am not a vegan (my friend is) but I like all kinds of foods so this wasn't a huge stretch for me. I have to say, it was awesome. From the time we arrived everyone was so nice and accommodating. It was beautiful outside and I thought they had an outside eating area, they didn't, but were happy to set up a table outside for us anyway. Which was so very nice of them. The food was so delicious. I have to say the macaroni and cheese ~WOW~. The jerk mushrooms caught me by surprise with the spicy kick but after the initial shock they too were amazing. My smoothie...was also awesome. The owners seemed very family oriented which was another big plus and so friendly. I enjoyed my lunch with my friend very much and can't wait to come back. read more

Like other people I love the food at this place.. But a couple of weeks ago I went to this place with a friend and I saw a little roach. So I told the owner about it , her response was that they needed to close down the place for a few days and fumigate .. At the end of the conversation she asked if we were "visiting " , we said that we are actually locals and her face completely changed. Maybe she was hoping I wouldn't spread the word... Iam sorry, the food is delicious and I like the whole family vibe ..however it is unnaceptable to see a roach walking by daytime at a place you eat . No, unfortunately I won't be back. If this is daytime while people are there , can you imagine when they close the business ? What a shame... They sale "healthy " style of eating but they obviously had an epidemic when I went. I came here in need of some healthy food when working Bike Week. It's hard to find anything that isn't generic and corporate in Daytona! I prefer organic/healthy food, but I also love supporting local businesses. The first two items I ordered from the menu they were out of (Saturday breakfast and no avocados), so I decided to do the 4 vegan sides. I got Mac n cheese, potatoes, jerk tempeh, and a kale salad that they put in a separate container. I definitely give them credit for having no styrofoam packaging and separating my salad from the hot food. I also got a beet juice from their menu, and added garlic for a whopping $2.00 a teaspoon! Watching them juice irritated me a bit, as it took the woman forever, she touched receipts with her gloved 'sanitary' hands while juicing, and she used ingredients that were not listed. For instance, she put multiple carrots in there when there were no carrots listed in the ingredients, and there was supposed to be apples but I did not see a single apple added. The teaspoon of garlic was also overpriced, and she kept stopping to do other things. I was on my way to work, so I just asked her if I could take it but she kept saying it wasn't done yet. I didn't bother saying anything about the wrong ingredients, because I didn't have the time. The total was $26.00 with tip. The kale salad was great and so was the Mac n cheese, but the jerk Tempeh wasn't very good so I didn't eat it. The juice was ok but did not taste like garlic or ginger, and just was wrong altogether. The food did give me some great energy for that day and left me feeling good all day. I really appreciate their efforts to bring good food to Daytona. I would go back again, I just hope that they make a point to ALWAYS have everything on the menu (I REALLY wanted breakfast, or at least the avocado dish) and that they stick to the ingredients they're listing in their juices/smoothies. I am willing to pay more to support local and healthy, but I don't think the quality and service matches the price just yet. read more

Went for lunch today, was excited about going there, however my excitement quickly dissipated. I had the brown stew Seitan with beans & rice, with Kale Salad and watermelon salad. The food was good but not exceptional. The service, which was just someone putting the food on the plate and handing it over, was extremely slow and the other girl, I don't know exactly what she did, stayed on the phone and tablet and didn't pay much attention to customers. We were pleasently surprised at how much we enjoyed the food here. We all (4 of us) got the veggie burgers being that they were on a Tuesday special for $5 each. They were delicious! Included with the burger was Kale salad on top of the burger. I hate kale yet this was a great addition! We were very happy with the choice of veggie burgers for lunch. Two of us got the berry blast smoothie and one got the green smoothie. All were delicious! I took off one star because you have to get up and get your napkins and utensils from a condiment case near the door instead of them being brought to you. I eat here at least once a week for lunch. The menu is different each day because it is based on what is fresh. My favorites are their jerk mushrooms, teriyaki gardein, mashed potatoes and kale salad. The kale salad is by far the best kale I have ever tasted! The berry bliss smoothie and all of their juices are very good as well. All of the staff is very knowledgeable of the menu items and they offer samples if you want to try it first.
