All the positive reviews led me here for lunch when visiting the city with my mom. This restaurant sits in the heart of downtown Deland amongst alot of shops. There was a market going on that we enjoyed exploring on our way over to the restaurant. It's not very big on the inside but does have tables inside and out. The inside is open allowing you views into the kitchen area. I ordered the Allicin Burger which is a beef burger with french onion reduction, crispy onion straws, swiss cheese, and garlic aioli. The meat was very juicy and flavorful. I enjoyed all the onions. It made for a solid meal. The old bay potato chips were a good pairing for the burger. My mom ordered a more traditional burger and she liked it. I noticed the bakery item display and it had a good selection. I deducted 1 star for customer service. While the food was very good, the service did not feel warm. Our server felt very cold and was short with us. She never once cracked a smile and it almost felt like we might have been bothering her by just being there. Did a pick up and go order on the day of the dog parade in farmers market I had a hamburger special. It was the juiciest hamburger I've had since I've worked in Florida in 2019. The fries were cooked to perfection with a nice crisp, even though they were in a box which was shocking to me I ordered it online so I had a little to no interactions with staff, but picking up the order went smoothly Bake chop is a great place. WOW! WOW wow wow , their food was so good! We came here on a recommendation from my aunt who was friends with the owner and it did not disappoint. The ambiance inside is very nice with tall ceilings and exposed vents . All of the staff were nice and they even turned down the a/c for us when it was blowing right over our table . But the main thing I want to touch on is the food !! Oh wow ! We split the boulevard sandwich which was grilled chicken, lettuce, goat cheese and other toppings. It was really really yummy. We also had their fries and the turkey pot pie soup which might have been my favorite of all of them . A couple beers to round that out and we had a great meal! So happy to find multiple vegan options at this cute artisan restaurant in Deland- all are clearly labeled. The TLT sandwich was delicious with a generous portion of tempeh, and toasty sourdough bread. The crispy garbanzo side is also tasty, but slightly overdressed with some sort of creamy sauce. My parents enjoyed their respective dishes- burger and poke bow. The poke bowl has a tad too much mayo dressing. Would ask for that on the side in the future. Sweet potato fries were excellent!! Either way ordering was easy the menu is not crazy big but does have options. I had the southern chick biscuit with pimento cheese and home fries chicken was cooked well but cooked in old greasy so it had that bitter burnt flavor. We have been here twice, both on Friday nights. The first time was a perfect experience- short wait, good service, delicious food. The second time was still a short wait, but it was there the similarities ended. We got seated at 8:20- they close at 9. Our waitress seemed stressed and let our appetizer sit in the window for a bit while she rolled silverware which was annoying. Our food came moments after the appetizer which the waitress tried to take when it was not half gone. My main issue was the entrees. Last time we got a poke bowl and a Mediterranean bowl and we RAVED. The portions were generous and the flavors...just wow! We couldn't wait to return. This time we both got Mediterranean bowls and it truly looked like they took one portion and spread it onto two plates. Such small portions. We honestly thought she must have thought we said to split one entree. The chicken was dry. The orzo, hard to find. The flavor? Still good, but we felt ripped off. Consistency is king. Deland is such a delightful little town and they're downtown just has the cutest shops. I had heard from others about the bake chop and it did not disappoint. First our server, Cohen was adorable, efficient, attentive and an all around exceptional server!! My husband had the teriyaki chicken bowl and he loved every bite. I had a marinated mushroom burger with avocados, sweet pickles, lettuce, tomato, sprouts and a wonderful aïoli. This is a cute little restaurant with a viewing kitchen. It is very clean and looks very appealing. The server was above and beyond. He answered all our questions about the food, the restaurant, the community and otherwise. He was so knowledgeable and friendly we couldn't have asked for any better. My brother is moving to this area in the next few months and we decided to tour the local restaurant scene. The energy of the restaurant was very warm and inviting and our server was super friendly. My brother ordered the vegan tempeh dish, I had the Mediterranean bowl, and my dad had one of the burgers with fried polenta on the side. We also got a shrimp appetizer. The hash bowl would be the only recommendation. The food had some errors that I couldn't ignore. The grits had lots of clumps with uncooked bits. The flavor was there just needed to be cooked better. Since two of our dishes had a side of bread we requested jam. They only had their berry compote. Which we were NOT told would be an added cost. This place is foodie heaven! Especially if you like food that is local and scratch made. The ever changing menu keeps delighting and surprising me every time I come back. I don't live in the area but if I'm anywhere near here (like today I was at Blue Springs) I make it an effort to eat at BakeChop! This local fav is located in Deland in the Artisan Alley area - a quaint couple of adjacent streets that are closed on Friday nights for a market with vendors set up in the alleyways and every few months for the Deland Indie Market (a great time to visit). There's breweries, taco trucks, juice bars and more nearby so you can make a whole day out of it - plus Freedom Park a few blocks away for the kids (epic park, check my reviews!) The food at BakeChop ranges from grass fed burgers to ahi tuna poke bowls along with vegetarian, gluten free, and bun free options for entrees and apps. Their sides are always unique and tasty - and their menu is loaded with good options! It's almost hard to pick just one...but make sure you leave room for dessert! Fresh and light! I was part of a party of four on a Saturday early evening and seated quickly. The server was very friendly, knowledgeable, and double checked on a couple gluten questions for us before ordering. The menu was clearly marked with gf, vegan, and vegetarian options, there was a lot! Surprisingly we all ordered a gf meal or app. I tried the Swamp salad, adding grilled chicken. The veggies were crisp and fresh, the dressing was light and flavorful and it all blended very nicely. My husband ordered the Put me out to pastor, which I have had a previous time here. It's a really nice balance of sweet from the black bean pineapple salsa to the savory, super flavorful and tender beef. I have been several times and food and service is good. I definitely noticed shrinkflation on their dishes. The hummus appetizer is about half the amount at minimum if not more than it used to be as you only get 2 very thin slices of cucumber, two sticks of carrots, they cut one slice of bread into 4 pieces yet give you 3, two sticks of celery, and 3 slices/ half sticks slices of red pepper lol. That's horrible ratio for the appetizer. Just around 2 months ago when I last ordered it it was a lot more than that easily double plus you got 1 whole slice of bread. It also looks absolutely nothing close to the picture they show for it online portion wise. Easily remove at least 60% of veggies shown there. Minus 1 star for that. I ordered one of their bowls (Earth Bowl) and it was extremely salty. Too salty to eat. I couldn't eat it at least. Just those two bites made me feel nauseous and were equally salty. I had to spit the next one out. I guess they don't do any quality control? They remade the dish which helped with some parts removed but still extremely salty. Probably wont get that dish again. Service was still great even with mishap. I'd still go back and recommend. Everything else I've had was great and service is always great. My rating would be 5 stars again otherwise. read more
