There are two sections to Nico's - a take out are where you can order poke, poke bowls, Hawaiian food, as well as fresh fish; also available are beer in a cooler and wine. Next door is a busy restaurant with a full bar. My sister and I wanted some poke and based on her friend's recommendation, we decided to visit. I ordered the special ultimate poke bowl (three fish selection) and it's amazing where there is more poke than rice! My sister's choice was also tasty. As we were checking out, the young cashier stated we could eat next door in the restaurant - wow, a pleasant surprise. It was during lunch so the restaurant was busy, but we found a seat. What's goes great with great fresh poke? Great fresh poke + beer, which was available at the bar! A great combination. Located off of Nimitz, Nico's is located on the far end of a converted warehouse, close to the pier, park and walk. It's worth visiting.

After walking around, the hostess asked if we had a reservation. I gave her my name, but she said we didn't have one, even though the restaurant was nearly empty. She then explained that our reservation was actually at their sister restaurant around the other side of the building. We went over there and found that it was primarily a sushi restaurant, which wasn't really what we were looking for. We had expected more of an izakaya-style experience, so we canceled the reservation and returned to the original restaurant. Once seated, the service was good and our server was attentive throughout the meal. One thing that was a little confusing was that sushi and sashimi had to be ordered from the sister restaurant, even though we were dining in the other restaurant. The food was brought over and served to us without any issues, and there were no problems with the bill, but it took us a while to understand how the two restaurants operated together. We ordered several dishes, including chicken skin wrapped gyoza, crab tempura, an assorted sashimi platter, a cream cheese and fish roe appetizer served with toast, an egg dish topped with fish roe, chicken karaage, and the miso butterfish. The highlights for me were the chicken karaage, miso butterfish, and gyoza. I enjoyed them enough to order another round of the gyoza and chicken. That said, many of the dishes leaned toward the sweeter side of Japanese cuisine, which just isn't my personal preference. If you enjoy those flavors, your experience may be different. Overall, the food was good, the service was solid, and there were a few standout dishes. The confusion with the reservation, entrance setup, and relationship between the two restaurants got the evening off to an awkward start, but the meal improved once we were seated. I'm not really a Japanese food person, so four stars is probably the highest rating I could realistically give a Japanese restaurant. With that in mind, I thought they did a good job, and there were a few dishes I would consider ordering again.

They also had killer French fries, with a combination of garlic, parmesan, and truffle oil. Impressive! Also the angry ahi tartare and escargot were delectable. We asked for seconds on almost all the above (had enough snails in one serving lol). Food options are limited to HH menu items, but everything we tried was wonderful! Bartender was cool, servers were gracious. The place was pretty empty, since dinner service doesn't open up til 5pm. We really felt like we had the place to ourselves! Probably a total of 35-40% of the bar/lounge seating capacity was used. Of note, HH seating is only at the bar or in the nearby lounge seating area.

I came here with a few of my coworkers & our usual spot - Side Street Inn had shut down in the Kapahulu neighborhood. I guess nobody felt like going to the original Side Street Inn location near Ala Moana, so one of my coworkers mentioned "Upstairs at Pier 38" for our get together. Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted right away. There was a short wait for our table, but no problem as not all of our party showed up on time. Upon getting seated, our waiter swung by to give us the specials and to take our drink orders. While looking over the menu, I noticed everything on the menu is served "ala carte". I ended up ordering the Misoyaki Sea Bass which came with Bok Choy, White Rice, with a Daikon Puree, Miso Caramel. One of my coworkers ordered the Gouda Macaroni & Cheesem and I must say that side dish was excellent! The food here was outstanding, & the staff that provided service to us certainly matched the level of what this restaurant is showcasing. Bravo!

I guess I'm the first to review this truck because I couldn't find any other posting on Yelp: Pastele stew - 4 stars - For $7.50 plus 20 cents tax (yes, this truck is one of the few that the tax is not included in their price) it pretty much tasted like the stew I make, but they had more ingredients in it. I like how they blended in cabbage, olives,. chunks of tomatoes and some other spices other than your basic carrot, potato, onion and celery in it. They gave a pretty big serving with two scoops of rice and watercress salad. Pastele - 3 stars - For $4 you can order the pastele ala carte. It's something I haven't eaten before, so I can't say if it's better or worse than other places, but it was something different to try - if you like spicy, it has a spicy after-bite to it. Goes well with the stew. My friend ordered the taco, and he said it was ok. However, I can't rate it since I didn't try it. Service - 5 stars - the man and woman were very friendly and answered my questions on what a pastele is, but more so because I didn't know what a pastele was or tasted like, he gave me a free sample to try, which is something not many lunch trucks would do. They also sell tacos and burritos, but I have to go back to try those too before being a fan of the truck.

I'm gonna be honest and say that this is the best Pastele place I've been to on the island…read more I can't say that i can compare it to an actual sit down puerto rican restaurant, since I'm not familiar with many around the island, but in comparison to all the Pastele trucks and stops Ive been to around the island, this one takes the cake! I've been to stops along the windward side, while heading down toward Koolau. There used to be (not sure if its still there) Pastele stops along the road. One of the guys that used to serve Pastele along with poke had decent Pastele, but his business was way sketchy. The dude would always "accidentally" miscount the money. He also inaccurately counted up the total of your order in his head. Not to mention his erasable white board was unreadable which made the prices even harder to determine. So don't go to that guy! Instead go to Kai's. Great prices (you don't have to worry about getting ripped off) and their Pastele ingredients are unique in texture. I'm really not even sure if they were made out of the traditional banana base. But i don't really care because they were just so awesome! They offer a a few different types Pastele with different types of meat all at different spice levels. Also several other peurto rican dishes which i still have yet to try are available. Next time I'm getting the seafood Pastele. I'm so bummed because they sold out the last time. I'm a huge fan of seafood and Pastele so when i saw it on the menu i just thought it was the coolest mix. (if you've never had poke with your Pastele you should def. give it a try)

Located on the corner of kalhi street and colburn (right across popeyes). A small unassuming door on the corner of the building is the storefront. I used to see a line but never knew but now I know its a pretty good choice to get quality poke..hawaiian plates...furukake salmon..kalua pig etc. The menu is not much more than that but that only means the limited Selections are prepared well. Prices are not cheap nor expensive but manageable for this day and time. The insides is just a small area to stand and an ordering counter not a place to sit and eat its all take out. The staff ( I am told he was the owner) was very cool and even offered us some of their smoked salmom dip and a cracker (killer dip!) Just from watching his interaction with customers I know Monarch has a really cool rapport with its customers. So if you driving down Kalihi st or colburn amd looking for affordable good quality grinds served with a freindly demeanor try Monarch.

We decided to go with one order of the pan fried kukui nut crusted ahi belly plate, a side order of stuffed ahi & one large crab cake. After ordering we stood outside to not take up the limited space within when new patrons would arrive. * The panfried kukui nut crusted belly was food, my friend ate majority of it and he said the ahi tasted fresh. * Stuffed Ahi, this was alright, I think if there were some kind sauce on top (like spicy mayo, unagi, etc) it would be better. I think they put a tiny strip of sauce (wasabi) on top (the tiny green?). I wish there would be a more even proportion of ahi and crab, it felt like there were more crab than ahi, and I think it was imitation crab? * Crab Cake: I actually liked this quite a lot, the crab cake itself was pretty flavorful and has different fine veggies within. The sauce it came with made it more enjoyable to eat as well. Overall, I think nothing was bad, but I expected to enjoy this more than I actually did, maybe I will try the ahi katsu instead.
