The Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Kalita Humphreys Theater is a fantastic venue. Both Uptown Players and Dallas Theatre Center stage plays here in this 600 seat luxurious theater with two small balcony areas on either side of the stage and an upstairs balcony section that seats about 150 additional guests. Seating is comfortable and sight lines are amazing -- not a bad seat in the house. The orchestra section is off to the side so you can see each actor's facial expressions. There's a bar with alcoholic beverages and sodas in additional to light snacks such as candy bars and peanuts. If you're tired of paying $100 to have to use binoculars just to see the stage at DSM Fair Park, you should definitely come check out a show here! read more

What a lovely theater and good time! I saw the play "Sense and Sensibility" tonight and enjoyed myself very much. The design of the building is aesthetically pleasing, art deco, big windows. I rather like all the red inside too, but perhaps that is just me. It is very much its own space, and not like any of the modern buildings today. Parking is free, which is a rare find in Dallas these days too. There are concessions, wine, soda, cookies and such, which you can take into the theater with you. The air conditioning was icy cold, which I was happy for! For those that got too chilly, right in the back are blankets available to use! How charming. I'd say every view is a good one here too, no bad seats. I found the chairs more comfortable than the ones at the Wyly Theatre for sure. The play itself was well done, good casting, especially Colonel Brandon, though he did make me think - Willoughby who? *fans self* The revolving stage was a little distracting, but the play itself was lovely as Jane's work almost always is. The actors bounding up the stairs and into the audience was unexpected for this type of play, but worked well, and many of the lines were delivered to much laughter. Neat theater! Cozy with great seating. Super cool because it's one of the last architectual projects of Frank Lloyd Wright before he died. The theater area (seating and stage) has been restored and the remaining areas appear to be original. The floor tile in the women's bathroom is red and reminded me if the seat cushions in the theater. Plenty of parking. read more

What a wonderful little theater this is! Tucked away in a beautiful wooded area in the heart of Turtle Creek, it's beautiful inside and out. The seating is the very definition of intimate, without a bad one in the place. The stage seems to fill your field of view, even from the back row. The seats are comfortable and plush, and don't feel cramped. Ingress and egress are easy to navigate, and the bar is conveniently located right by the entrance. The lights and sound for our show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, were excellent. The actors could be seen and heard well throughout. If there's a knock at all, it's the restrooms, which are downstairs and tiny. But there is an accessible restroom upstairs, suitable for those in wheelchairs or handicarts. I'll definitely seek out more shows here, it was an excellent experience. read more

" A Christmas Carol", the play. An absolutely awesome heartwarming experience today, the day after Christmas. I must say I wish I had attended this performance earlier to give you folks more notice to experience this great theatre. This was the highlight of my Holiday experience. Holidays can be difficult and trying times for many reasons, but today's visit for this performance brought both happy smiles and cheerful happy tears. An excerpt from their website : No holiday story compares with A Christmas Carol, and no production has more humor and humanity than DTC's staging of Richard Hellesen's heart-warming adaptation. Filled with traditional and original songs of the season, A Christmas Carol has become a wonderful addition to the Dallas holiday calendar. Don't miss your opportunity to spend part of your season with Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim and miserly old Ebenezer Scrooge as he learns the meaning of forgiveness and the healing power of love. The sights, the sounds, the stage, the music, were all just incredible. This is performed by a group of local actors, as well as amateur wanna'bees, but so amazingly coordinated. Designed by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the theatre opened in 1959 and is named for actress Kalita Humphreys. "A Christmas Carol" will be DTC's last scheduled local performance at this theatre, but going forward will be utilized by different performance groups. It's a small theatre, beautifully arranged, and possibly not a bad seat in the house. (Bar, serving wine and beer you can take to your seats) The performance today was inspiring, & beautifully presented. Making it even more special was the performance by an 8 year old son of a very special friend who portrayed a dual role as young Ebenezer Scrooge and Tiny Tim. He was just precious, loved his roll, as you could tell by his enthusiasm, a doll, a young aspiring actor, who did an outstanding job. I'm going to be proud one day to say "I know a celebrity" ! Only 3 performances left; one tonight @ 1900, and tomorrow 12/27 Sunday @ 1400 (Matinee) and 1900. Worth the ticket prices of $15 - $30, with also standby further reduced tickets available. You'll walk away with a wonderful feeling of what the Christmas season is really all about; forgiveness, love and caring. GO if you can on this late notice. read more

I was born and raised in the Dallas area and my parents have been bringing us to Dallas Theater Center shows here since literally before I can remember. My earliest memories of the place are of the insanely steep and jagged carpeted steps that led downstairs to the "lounge" style (old school) bathrooms downstairs that my sister and I would race up and down no doubt upsetting many an old lady there for an afternoon matinee. As I grew up I began to find my place in the world and whether it was the influence of the seasons of shows we had seen or the weird welcoming family that is Theatre people I found my place was in the theatre. So, I will admit that this review is mostly nostalgic. As I do not live in the area anymore I do not frequently attend shows at this magical space and sadly upon my most recent visit to the area it appears that the Kalita Humphreys is need of a little TLC. It appears like the Dallas Theater Center has abandoned its old hallowed halls for a more chic venue. This happens and I am not bitter. I understand that sometimes a space outlives its intention. What I cannot understand is why this building seems to have been forgotten. The ol gal needs a bit of help. A little bit of history of this building reveals that it has a very famous architect! The only theatre that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and actually he never got to see it finished, sadly dying before construction was done. It evokes all of that style with its bold lines and crazy shapes. Its a ONE-of-a kind as all Frank Lloyd Wrights are. Upon my most recent visit to this space for an event I was ecstatic to show my husband the Theater that inspired and fueled my love and career for the arts. He had a great time exploring the funny shaped hallways, lower lobby, and the interesting windows that open into the theater. Who ever heard of such a thing? Windows in a theatre? I love it! As a little weird theater kid growing up in Texas this was our church. It will forever have a place in my heart and hopefully it will be preserved for others to enjoy the strange mysteries of the arts. Now get out there and see a show! read more

Beautiful hidden theatre in Turtle Creek and free parking. Say what?! Here's a tip, if you get there at least 30 minutes before your show starts you should still be able to park in the lot immediately next to the front door to the theatre. So bypass all the parking down the hill by Turtle Creek, unless you're running late or a parking attendant tells you the main lot is already full, otherwise you'll be trekking up that hill to get to the theatre. And no one wants to sit next to someone who's all sweaty and gross fyi. The theatre itself is beautiful, not a bad seat in the place. Although from the looks of it I would suggest avoiding the first 4-5 rows unless you like craining your neck. Also there is a nice bar in the lob and they let you bring drinks into the theatre. I don't like this but it's their policy so whatevs. I mean where are we a movie theatre? Is this Rock of Ages or something?? I think it's rude and has the potential to be gross/messy but it's not my theatre. One cool thing is that there are blankets at the back of the theatre for patrons who can't handle all the awesome ac-awesomeness being pumped in during the show. Don't think I've ever seen that before. So in conclusion, I love it. Looking forward to finding another excuse to come here soon! PS, I was here for Next to Normal which is running through July 3. An evening in this historic Frank Lloyd Wright designed theatre is truly a treat. There are no "bad seats". The sound is especially good and every bit of dialogue is easily heard. There is plenty of parking and a spacious lobby to allow crowd movement without crowding. This small theatre tucked beside beautiful Turtle Creek is a treat. The wide variety of productions offers something for everyone. This is a not to be missed Dallas Jewel. read more

Did you know that this one of Frank Lloyd Wright's last buildings? It has a neat history: supposed to be built here, then there, but then Dallas. It's in need of a facelift (very 70s popcorn ceiling and crazy red everywhere), but the architecture is great (I think). The theater space itself is a cylinder and it seems like voices project very well. Definitely a great, classic theater. Get to your show about 20 minutes early - this is Texas, and parking can be a nightmare. read more

Very quaint and cozy theatre. It was tucked away in a hill and away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The scenery around the theatre seriously reminded me of the hills of Los Angeles. There was no bad seat in the house. They even put out red blankets to accommodate people who get cold easily. That's an example of the high level of customer service provided by the theatre staff. read more

On Saturday we saw the most amazing production of A Christmas Carol. I have to say, I expected it to be nice, but we were blown away! I can't tell you HOW pleasantly surprised we were at how good this production was. The actors were amazing and talented, the stage and lighting and sound were spectacular and I can't imagine that any Broadway production could outshine these folks. And we weren't alone in this opinion, the audience spontaneously offered a thankful standing ovation following their performance. They did a spectacular job of holding one's attention for every second of the production. Your mind won't wander for a second. In short a spectacular production that I wish everyone would see. This production will make you a fan of this theatre. We will be buying tickets to every future production! Love, love, love it!! read more

Great theater in my neighborhood! I went to see Next to Normal last night and was blown away. The venue was great...not a bad seat in the house. The talent was incredible too - I was pleasantly surprised for a small, regional theater to have such good performers.
