Texas Theatre is a historic theater in Dallas-Oak Cliff that is part landmark, part time capsule, and super cool. While the area around the theater has new shops, as soon as you walk into the Texas Theatre you are transported back into time. This is a must visit. My Overall Rating - 5 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Theater, Return) Atmosphere - As you walk up to Texas Theatre, you'll see an old school lit marquee displaying the current shows and features. Curved, star shaped neon lights spelling "TEXAS" hang outside, guiding you in. Inside, it's chick, cool, and even has a bar. Curved couches imported directly from the 60's remind you that you just stepped back in time. 1 Star. Service - The center ticket booth is no longer used, but the entire staff was super nice, including the bartender. They know the Texas Theater is different and embody the groovy 60's feel. 1 Star. Theater - ICYMI, the Texas Theatre is famous because this is where Dallas police arrested Lee Harvey Oslwald after the assassination of JFK. The seats don't recline, cupholders have been added in between seats, and visible speakers pump out the sound as Texas Theatre moves into the modern era. But honestly, this place is a cool museum. One where you can visit, watch a movie, grab a drink, and step back in time. It's true the mega cinema's may offer you a better movie watching experience, but they're nowhere close to being retro cool like the Texas Theatre. 2 Stars. Will I Return? - Yes. If you haven't been, you should. Watching a movie at the Texas Theatre is like a step back in time. You get to experience what it was like in a super cool setting. Despite being born and raised Dallasite, I've never been to the Texas Theatre until recently after attending two shows there (Mae Martin and Alok Venom). I enjoyed myself both times. I'm not sure if it was the artists or the theatre itself, but the venue really had an intimate charm that really makes you feel like you're part of the performance. I feel like the stage isn't all that far away. I felt comfy during both shows with plenty of legroom (but I am short). I also don't remember my wife (who isn't short) complain about the legroom.While finding parking can present some challenges and the women's restroom line can occasionally feel somewhat longish (I mean... what woman's restroom line isn't during a well-attended production?), I really enjoy the history and nostalgia of Texas Theatre. Give it a try. For those my age and older, it really does retain that old school movie theater feel--and, for any rainbow kids like me, the Texas Theatre welcomes everyone. Wow what a treasure. This theatre is a gem. Is is lovingly preserved. I highly recommend coming for a movie or a live show. Check out the FAQs on their webpage. Best damn FAQs written. Oak Cliff is a wonderful neighborhood . Parking is limited in Jefferson but lots nearby. There are TWO bars inside the theatre and also concessions. Drinks are reasonably priced and service is top notch. Restrooms are small but adequate. And such adorable cozy lounge areas. Do check out my pic. Just great ambiance. 10/10 for style. The only detractor is in the live show: the wings did not have the curtains fully closed and you can see all the activity which is highly distracting. This is a major no no in live shows. It derails a performance. With the attention to detail everywhere else this is a glaring problem. That's fixable - so come see entertainment in a gorgeous historical building serviced by wonderful humans. read more

Last night (5/25/25) my kiddo and I attended a very fun event here at The Texas Theater. The horror podcast "Dead Meat" was filming a live show version of their podcast for fans. Now, I could talk about the show all day, but that isn't really the point of Yelp so I'll focus on the venue. This Theater, if I had to sum it up in one word, is just plain charming. It's an old school movie house style Theater with one auditorium. Reminds me of the old days before everything was a multiplex. Very cool! I'm no expert on architecture by any stretch, so I won't insult you by trying to opine on the design. I'll just say that it's simple layout was built with flow in mind. The place never felt cramped despite dozens of fans milling about, and from the concessions to the bar to the auditorium, everything just flowed very well. There are some nice spots to sit, they serve snacks and simple foods like pizzas or hot dogs or popcorn. They serve Dublin sodas, which are fantastic, but also have the standard soda fountain as well. Bar was small, but had a decent enough selection of popular spirits and such. All in all, we had a great time at the show and while I don't live in Dallas, I would definitely return here happily if there was another show or event that used this venue. read more

If you are ever in Dallas, make sure to check the Texas Theatre. Not only is this a historical building for it being THE theatre Lee Harvey Oswald went to before being captured, but it's also an Oak Cliff staple. The friendliest staff to make you feel welcome from concessions to the bar staff. They even do special Latine film screenings selected by Vianca and host Cinewilde for Queer film screenings amongst other great reoccurring events. Texas Theater is magical. I cannot begin to express my long-reaching admiration for this place. It is the quintessential Art House Theater. You cannot find a more eclectic program of events than what Texas Theater presents. Okay- obvi, they show films. But in addition to that, They host many live events, comedy shows and so much more. I highly recommend you sign up for their weekly email newsletter to get the full scope of the going's on happening. I have seen so many shows here over the years and I love the varied nature of the movie selections and shows. But this is just the tip of the iceberg! As you may already know, this building has historical significance which is an added layer of cool to an ever growing list of neat attributes Texas Theater has to offer. The building has many original features. From the floor tiles to the organic curves of the Venetian interior architecture, there is so much character in every nook and cranny. I really enjoy waking up to the lit marquee- it's just so cool. Very iconic! When you walk in, to the right you see the concession stand which has a more gourmet assortment than most other theaters. Think Mexican Cokes and pizza from Eno's. Then, as you progress through the lobby you can see the bar. I don't drink alcohol, but I'm always impressed by the cool tunes they are playing. From the B-52's to Joy Division and Tones on Tail, you know you're going to hear awesome music while you wait to enter the lobby. Now before you do go into the auditorium, be sure to explore the upstairs. There's some neat paintings evoking classic sci-fi B movies. It's just such a unique place. In the actual movie auditorium, there is sizable stage that supports all kinds of acts, and occasionally they hold events behind the screen. Now, if you are expecting some over the top, digital and audio experience, this is not it. Texas Theater is first rate when it comes to showcasing the best new and classic movies. Some of the best movie experiences I've had here have been viewing movies like Liquid Sky, the original Susperia, Jonathan Demme's Stop Making Sense, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Mame, Haxan and so many more. There are also so many live shows that have been so awesome on account of the smaller venue. I've seen Fred Armisen, Michelle Wolf, Todd Barry and Everything Is Terrible, and so many more- there are so many great acts that come through there. Just another reason to subscribe to their newsletter. There are so many great acts that come through, so o always check to newsletter to make sure I don't miss any potential shows I may want to see. Before I forget- yes, this theater is also of significance because of its link to the JFK assassination. This was the theater where Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested after the murder of J.D. Tippet. Every November there is an homage to JFK's legacy and they show LFL as well as the movie that was showing the day LHO was arrested (War is Hell). Overall, you cannot beat Texas Theater for atmosphere, programming and historical significance. Every time I come here, I know I'm with my people. There is no shortage of interesting folks that come here. If anything, give TT a try and I promise, you will be so glad this gem exists. I don't know what the current management has done to this place but it doesn't really feel like a neighborhood anymore. It's starting to feel corporate overly controlled and puzzles. I mean yeah the bathroom smell like piss, the front area always looks dirty because it's so old I guess they can't clean it properly. But I don't get any atmosphere off this place anymore. It doesn't feel vintage and historical it just feels old. The front staff was cool, I don't have a problem with them. But I've been there a number of times over the years and the place is feeling kind of sad. read more

Very cool old theatre to watch classic movies and see live performances. You could almost feel the history in this old building. Parking was a bit of a challenge but we found a parking lot around the corner and walked about a block to the theatre. The concession stand had cool names for the popcorn sizes. 35mm 50mm and 65mm for small medium and large. The staff were friendly and efficient. The lines moved quickly because they were staffed with plenty of people. read more

Well, what can I say about this little slice of history in Dallas! An independent theater with an amazing history, it's a little bit like taking a step into the past. I had visited many years ago, but an indie movie brought me back to Texas Theater and I'm glad it did. Parking can be interesting, I'm still not 100% where the free lot for the theater is, but I've usually ride shared or lucked out with a street spot after the meters are free. Staff was extremely friendly, and for the show that I was at, it felt like there was a good bit of community for staff & regulars that come out for a lot of the indie films. I will for sure come back for the things that are Texas Theater exclusives in the future! read more

I'm not sure if the theatre has damage is the latest storm or what but about half the theater was cordoned off and the balcony was closed. We came for a comedy show which was cool to be so close to the performer but it felt a little more like a dive theater than a place to see top talent. The bar was nice and friendly but the bathrooms felt a little more high school circa 1980 than a modern place charging $60 per ticket. read more

I came here to see the Cancelled Podcast Tour and I love coming to this theatre but some of the security guards were SO rude. They were very overwhelming and I brought a gift for both Brooke and Tana they took it away after I spent a bunch of money on it when I wanted to give it to them myself! Great place to see films in 35mm. They have few new releases and play a lot of older films. The seats aren't new or recline but they're really comfy and wide. The bottom original auditorium is HUGE. I like sitting in the last room but it can get annoying with everyone going out for drinks during the film. They serve alcoholic beverages, pizza and other snacks. read more

Best known as the location Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested on November 22 1963 for the assassination of President John F Kennedy. After shooting JFK he worked his way back to Oak Cliff probably towards home when Dallas Police Officer Tippet spotted him walking down the street. Oswald killed officer Tippet and fled. Going down Jefferson blvd he ducked into the Texas Theater without buying a ticket. This is the reason the police were called! Otherwise, he may have gotten away with it! read more

This place is cool. I stumbled upon their website while looking for retro movies, and immediately signed up for notifications. Today they were playing the 1989 classic, The Burbs. And the cost of the ticket was $1. How could I not go?! All honesty, with taxes and fees, it was $2.15. Still worth it. Now, I knew a bit of the history of the place, but I do not spend much time in Dallas and had never made it over to the Oak Cliff/ Bishop Arts area (I'm so uncool), and greatly appreciated the website with information on parking. There is construction on the street and this is a hip area, so the map with directions to their parking lot was greatly appreciated. The building is fantastic. It is one screen, a little tiny concession stand, a cute little bar, and tons of nostalgia. They have comfy love seats and nooks spread out all over and people are encouraged to check out the building. The balcony is closed but the theater is good sized and seats over 600. I saw these employees and everyone was friendly and didn't mind answering questions. They open the door an hour before showtime, giving you an opportunity to meander around. The seats in the theater were comfortable and have drink holders on the back of the chair in front of you, stadium style. The quality of the picture and sound were great. I also loved that they showed a couple of local commercials about the area and it's history. I really enjoyed my experience. I did take away a star because the popcorn was stale. They only show one picture at a time which means they didn't pop it for our movie, it was leftover. That was kind of a bummer, but it didn't stop me from eating it. read more

This past holiday weekend, my family and I got tickets to see Potted Potter (a Harry Potter parody show) at the Texas Theatre! It was my first time visiting. The show was great, and I loved the theater itself. It's been renovated but without removing all the historic charm from this old theater (when the theater opened in 1931, it was the third largest theater in Dallas). It has a small bar and a small concessions area and is just very, very charming. (They also have a parking lot just one block from the theater). If I still lived in Dallas, I'd be back soon to take in an old, restored movie at the theater for sure. I can't wait to go back when I visit Dallas in 2019. read more

I use to come here when I was a young child with my family . I can't tell you the countless movies I have came to see at this theater.. So many great memories that will go with me till my homecoming.... Such a cool place! The theatre has great Dallas history and they show a great variety of movies and host different events. The interior still has an old school vibe and there is a great bar! The bar has a good selection of beer and fun cocktails that you can or der and take into the movie. The service was friendly and attentive at the bar and it was fun to hang out with moviegoers before the show started. This is a great little theater to visit. The historic quality is a fine touch on a smooth experience. Staff was super friendly, and the drink options at the bar inside were even better than expected. You might need to park a few blocks away or more depending on time and type of event, but it's still easy to handle. There are parking meters on the street, but they don't apply after 4pm (if I remember correctly), and on weekends. There are some nice little restaurants in the vicinity for a quick bite before an event too. We make the pilgrimage here every year to watch the Oscar nominated Documentary short films, the only theater in the metroplex that shows them. An added plus: they accept Moviepass, so keep it on your radar for a field trip to Oak Cliff, where you can dine at either Mesa or the Small Brewpub, both about a block away (in opposite directions,) while you're in the 'hood. read more

I love this place! Took my daughter to see The Avengers there and we had an awesome time. There's nothing not cool about the spot. The art on the wall, the bar, the sound, the seats, the vibe I mean I could go on and on. I don't care what's showing there, I love the atmosphere! I can see why Oswald chose to hide in that piece. Came for the Sunset Drive-In experience. Since it was Hubby and I's first drive-in movie, I thought I would share some tips that would have been helpful to us. Texas Theater sets up a non-permanent drive-in movie experience behind the theater in a parking lot accessible from Sunset. The guys pulled cars in by size so that the big trucks did not block smaller vehicles, so that was appreciated. In order to listen to the movie, you HAVE to use your car radio tuned into 87.9. You cannot use a FM transmitter app on your phone or another app. In order to run your radio, you will need to have your car on accessory for the entire movie, which means your car's battery may die. This was perhaps the most annoying part of the experience... you would think there would be app to listen to the sound. Thank goodness, we were parked in the first row and were able to roll down the windows a bit to hear from the speakers. Which brings me to my next pointer... if you have to roll down your windows, be prepared for the cold or heat. In our case, the night was a little chilly, and I was glad I brought a blanket. Liked that we were able to bring out own snacks and stay in our car. Some of the others brought lawn chairs and sat outside of the car. If COVID brings back the drive-in theater, I hope technology catches up so that we can listen without having to run the car or drain the battery. read more

This place is a neighborhood gem. I didn't realize such a place even existed. Upon entering, there was a concession stand that had snacks and drinks available. There was a little shop to the side selling poster for the movie I was there for, Puppet Master. I came with a friend who's an architect so he explained to me that the way they built the theatre helped with the sound and that it's a rarity now given that more modern methods are more commonly used. He explained that the ceiling fans they had there are industrial strength and will probably never give out. In another words, it's an architectural gem as well. A Q&A was even held after the viewing. As time goes by I drove by the Texas Theater, but never set foot inside, for too many years. It's been part of Dallas' lost history for decades. Originally built as one of many neighborhood movie theaters by one of Howard Hughes companies in the 30s. It's infamously known as the place where the police found Oswald after killing Kennedy and Officer Tippit. Sadly, that event cast a dark shadow on the Texas, like it did to downtown Dallas. It has laid vacant for many years, and was on the chopping block many times. Thankfully, good people stepped up and saved it, time after time. If you are tired of the plethora of bad movies at the multiplex. Come to the Texas for culture, independent films, local concerts, and a awesome bar! The bartenders, the people at concessions, the patrons themselves are all real characters. Last time I was there I stayed till they closed at 3 am on a weeknight! I just had such a great time talking to everyone! Be sure to explore the whole theater! There are plenty of cool surprises to be found. Vintage movie poster reproductions are all around. By the bar you can choose from their record collection to play on the player. In the back, there are vintage video games, including a table Ms. PAC Man. Go upstairs for a terrific lounge area with plenty of seating. I only wished their theater balcony was open too. Sadly they don't have a kitchen so their food selection is very limited, word to the wise, the pizza was awful. Hopefully they can partner up with a worthy restaurant neighbor to remedy this and bring themselves to the 5 star level they deserve! Never out of date. read more

I've heard many a tale about the infamous Texas Theatre. Naturally, when I heard that the second annual Dallas Burlesque Festival was being held here...I said, momma like! Steeped in history, this former movie theatre is the place Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested after the assassination of JFK. The films being presented on that day were "Cry of Battle" and "War Is Hell"--use THAT in your next Trivial Pursuit game. The Big D is prone to tearing down historical buildings, so I was delightfully surprised to hear this theatre was alive and kicking. Refurbished in 2003, it now plays host to many community events-- especially ones that include nipple tassles! I also just love the strip of Oak Cliff it occupies. If I'd been in a 1959 Fairlane cruising down the street, I could have sworn I'd gone back in time. Sadly, I was in a Nissan. But no worries. The stars of the Texas marquee still burn brightly here. My only complaint? It was January and EFFING COLD up in there. I was in the back row shivering under my coat with a runny nose. I don't know how those young ladies were so scantily clad. I suspect heavy drinking played a part. The bathrooms were a little worse for the wear, but gaw dang, this is a Texas historical landmark! Play some classic films in there during the summer (à la Paramount Theatre in Austin) and you've got yourself a mighty fine thang. read more
