Jon and I like to get weekend matinee tickets for Theatre Three and spend the afternoon in Dallas. A little bite to eat and a cocktail either before or after supporting some local talent. We've seen a handful of performances here, both musicals and plays. I love the intimate setting and there's really no bad seat in the house. Actors get close to you and it's kind of exciting to be so near the stage. I love that during intermission you can buy some basic wine or beer and have it in a plastic cup with a lid to take back into the theatre. They also sell a few simple snacks like candy and chips, but don't eat during the performance because no one wants to listen to you messing with a crackling candy wrapper! Tickets aren't too expensive, about $35ish. The staff is friendly and casual. read more

We were actually in Theatre Too. Which is down in the basement. It is a very small venue but very good. And a great place to see Avenue Q. This was my first time here and I really like the venue. All the seat in the middle are great. The seats on each side are not as good unless you want to see the show sideways. Stay in the middle you can't go wrong. The sound was perfect you can hear everything. Arrive early the parking is a little hard to find. The garage fills up fast and the street parking is very hard to find. We valet which cost 5 dollars. That is the easiest way to park. The streets go all different ways. And if you been to Up Town Dallas you know that already. Over all great place to see a play. We still have to go back and see Theatre Three. read more

Located inside the Quadrangle shopping center, this is a great theatre to see plays because the space is large enough to hold a good sized audience but set up in a theatre-in-the-round style that makes you feel so much closer to the action. Even in the back row we had NO trouble seeing everyone up close and personal. In addition there are hidden entrances all over the audience which allow the actors to leave in different ways, and enter in different ways, so the likelihood of the actors interacting with the audience is pretty high. I saw an amazing show called 'On the Eve' here which was a complete blast and included an amazing cast. I was impressed by how the space worked so well in three dimensions, and the acoustics and sound quality were great. There is a smaller theatre in the basement called Theatre Too, and during intermission they do open a tiny bar. Since its in a shopping center there are also a lot of great restaurants to visit before or after your play. Enjoy it, it was a blast! read more

Last night I saw "The 25th Anual Putnam County Spelling Bee" here and it was wonderful! Theatre 3 is in the round and couldn't have been a more perfect venue for this musical. There were a few areas where acoustics weren't they're best, but overall I had a very positive experience. Very clean with really friendly staff. I felt as if I had stepped into a theatre family, because everyone working/volunteering was so friendly and nice. During intermission, they serve beer, wine, soft drinks and snacks for purchase. After all my years living nearby, for the first time I went to Theatre Three last night to see The Crucifer of Blood, a Sherlock Holmes play. I was very impressed with the quality of the acting and especially the set and the lighting. Very impressive for a small production company. I was amazed to hear that this is its 49th season! The main reason I have not gone here before was that I dislike theaters-in-the-round. However, I can see that my prejudice has caused me to probably miss some quality productions. I've been lucky enough to have several actor friends who have hooked me up with free tickets over the years to shows at both Theatre Three and Theatre Too. In general, I tend to love the quirkier, darker, raunchier shows they do downstairs, but I've also enjoyed some great shows upstairs in the main theatre. This is true theatre in the round, so seats surround every side of the stage. This also means actors come in through all of the entrances so don't plan on taking any bathroom breaks at the risk of a head on actor collision. It runs cold in this theatre, to the point that they keep blankets at the ticket booth, so dress for that. And don't worry about getting a bad seat - the directors do a great job of playing to all sides of the house. It's a small enough theatre that there really isn't a bad seat in the house. They sell booze before the show and at intermission, so you can get your drink on (just remember it will be very difficult to take a bathroom break in the middle of a show!) and they are located near some neat places like the Dream Cafe and MoMo's, so you can do dinner and the theatre the right way. read more

Dear Theatre 3, Why do you call yourself 3? I believe there is a theatre downstairs called "Theatre Too," but what about Theatre One (or is it Theatre Won)? I must commend you on your spelling of "theatre" as it is my preferred spelling, but gmail always insists that I have a typo. Let us scoff gmail together for it's very typical spelling of the word. I like that your seating is divided into North, East, South, West- because this gives everyone an opportunity to practice those great acronyms they learned in 2nd grade- Never Eat Sour Watermelon Now Eat Some Worms Nobody Ever Says Wazooga I particularly like the East side for seating, as it seems to give a good view of all sides of the stage. The chairs lack some comfort, a big rigid, like 1980s movie seats, cardboard boxes, and some conservative Republicans. And, how considerate of you to offer orange fleece blankets at the box office. Small theater frightens me. I have seen some horrible productions in tiny joints in L.A, which features arguably the most talented acting pool on the planet. So excuse my trepidation about attending a show here in Dallas, whose big forays into cinema and TV include the awful Dr. T & The Women and the non-Emmy recognized Chuck Norris (who deserves special recognition for his outstanding cameo in Dodgeball) I couldn't resist attending a play called " A Dog's Life", however because I just love the furry little guys and how they make me laugh. Presented by Theater Three a company that quietly exists amongst a enormous roster of restaurants in the Quadrangle. It is a very clean and effective space for a company this size. Although none of the cast was greatly credentialled, they all did an admirable job, especially the lead, and the supporting actress who played a cute yipper dog ( I know that is a highly unlikely scenario but true nonetheless). The "stage" was essentially center to a theater in the round format of seating which featured no more than 4-5 rows. This probably explains the $30-$35 ticket price even for a Saturday matinee. I have to imagine that a senior discount is available because there were more walkers in the house that at Kid Dyn-O-Mite's family reunion (Young'uns, Jimmie "J.J. Walker used to play that character on a popular 70's TV sitcom. Now get off my lawn!) Overall, I gave it 3 stars for the production but the space might lift it one higher. My only criticism is that you should NEVER end a comedy about dogs with 20 minutes about an older dog coming to grips with his mortality and then dying. There's a reason I don't watch Old Yeller you know. read more

Ya know why I love Dallas so much? Because outsiders may not know this, but it has as many hidden gems as any big, bustling city out there, and it surprises you in the best possible ways when you least expect it (I sound like a commercial). I saw "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" last night at Theatre Too over on Routh Street and just, wow. First off, I had no idea this place existed. I bought the tickets through this awesome discount company online called Goldmember (like Groupon only not a billion dollar industry and way less mainstream), and figured this "Theatre Too" would be somewhere obvious that I had just never noticed before. Not really. We parked alongside the general Quadrangle area and had to ask a valet man in front of Hully & Mo's where this secret theatre was hiding. However, once we found it and were inside, it was great. Theatre Three and Theatre Too have been there for almost 50 years now! And the setting is incredibly intimate, especially in Theatre Too (the small, basement theatre). I'm a play and musical nerd, so this type of stuff always gets me excited. The play was hilarious and super fun and the incredibly small Theatre Too made the experience feel that much more personal and special. Oh, and the greatest part? The building experienced a 10 minute power outage during of the scenes in the play, and instead of freaking out and overreacting by evacuating the audience, we all held up our cell phones, the stage hands brought out portable lights, and they kept right-on going! Awesome. If you haven't been to see a show at either of these theatres, I suggest doing so. It'll make you feel like you, too have found one of Dallas' best kept secrets. read more

Theatre Three can be such a gem, but it depends on the show. I usually like seeing plays there over musicals, since the pitch of the audience lends itself to poor acoustics, especially if you sit in the west (The theatre is divided into four sides -- north, south, east and west. Stick with north and east if you can.) I personally have performed there in two shows, and had good experiences. I would love to work there again if I still lived among the Dallas hoi poloi! This theater holds a very special place in my heart as the first place I ever visited when I came to Dallas on business. Now that I live here, I still love coming here. The selection of shows is diverse and fun. I've seen [Title of Show], Thoroughly Modern Millie and, most recently, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. The shows are always well acted. I love the black box set-up and there truly are no bad seats in the house. The ticket prices are very reasonable. I love that you can see quality professional theater at a price that the average person can afford. After this most recent show, I'm now considering a season ticket purchase. I found myself saying, "oooooh...I want to see that" to just about every show in the upcoming season. I have no doubt they'll do them all justice. read more

My 29th birthday was yesterday, so my family took me out to see Avenue Q. The theater is quaint, and the show was fabulous. It's one of those places where there's literally no bad seat in the house like the Pocket Sandwich Theater. I got pictures with the Avenue Q cast afterwards too, and I will not hesitate to go back again. A bit of advice, they don't skimp on the air conditioning so it's pretty cold in there. If you're there with a lady you might want to bring a light jacket, BUT!!!!!!! here's why they also get 5 stars from me. I did not care for the show, She Kills Monsters. The actors were ok but the play or script had strong lesbian discussions which it seemed were most of her deceased sister's monsters laced with much profanity. Not fit for school-aged student which most of deep discounts are given as seen by the audience along with many middled aged folks. It was a comedy but most didnt find any scenes hardly laughable. Overated even if it was free. Tickets are overpriced for mediocre acting and the space of the tiny theater. I dont see what these other reviewers see. My friend and I left in the middle and asked for a refund. The website synopsis never explained the play would dwell on the main girl character as being gay and her gay demons. Stop forcing this lifestlye on the rest of public or else give us a choice. read more

Love this place. The place is small, freezing, the costumes often need work, but every seat is a good one, actors are fantastic, and it's always a great time My husband and I had season passes for several years, but due to his schedule we couldn't renew. We miss our passes but still get to Theatre Three. Theatre Two is in the same building and performances there are a little more offbeat. They are twice the fun and just as entertaining. There are lots of good restaurants nearby to complete a wonderful afternoon or evening of theater. read more

Right off the bat: Every seat is the best seat in the house! The seats surround the stage so you get to enjoy the play from every angle. It's a very comfortable environment, with nice scenery. They have shows playing here on Thursdays as well. Located next to an extremely delicious Thai restaurant in downtown dallas and practically run by Darius the Great, this theater is worth all five of its stars. My husband, sister in law and I came up here for Avenue Q a while back. I had not been to this venue before so I was very intrested to see what the layout was like. We were so excited, my husband and I had seen it at bass hall but were far back. So having up close seats and going with my sister in law for her first time was a hoot. Went there to see The Wedding Singer with my theatre class. Not a big and glorious theatre, but that's what makes it great! It was small and intimate, seeing the actors every move. It was great to see a show in an "arena" stage and the way the set was built was amazing. Got to meet cast afterwards, everyone was so nice and gave us tips for the future. The staff was AMAZING. They were so helpful and nice and you could tell they loved doing their job/s. O would definitely go back again and see what other productions they put on. read more

A HUGE thank-you to the Clinton Andrew Gilbert and cast & crew of "Fellowship!" the Lord of the Rings musical parody in the downstairs Theater Two space for last night's performance! You made a ten year-old boy soooo happy! Just watching my son laugh his head off, stomping on the floor, and saying "Oh, Pippin!" was priceless. I was so proud. We waited for the actors afterwards and they all engaged him. He couldn't tell them fast enough about his favorite parts!! They were SO sweet to him. I was thrilled because he has trouble "engaging" and tends to "disengage" a lot. He was so excited when he got home, babbling very fast to his father, who could not understand him at first....to anyone who has kids that have seen the movies or not seen the movies - TAKE THEM!!! ....best of all I got PROPS - my husband (who does not like musicals but LOVES "Lord of the Rings") said "Good Call". Went to see I Love you, You're perfect, now change! at Theater Three yesterday It was Absolutely Fantastic! What a great surprise. Did not know about this venue ~ Truly Dallas best kept secret. I busted out laughing throughout the entire play. Incredible performers ~ vocals ~ acting ...both superb! In this small and very intimate setting you feel as though the characters are playing directly to you. I will definitely come back! ... and bring all my friends! Worth every penny! read more

One of the oldest theatre's in town, Jac Alder (artistic director) presents exciting works new and old. The productions are typically high quality and a good value. It's not like down the street at the Dallas Theater Center where you'll pay $50 a head to see a big steamy pile wrapped in gold . . . this is more of a smaller scale company with an emphasis on the actors and the story. Only problem was parking can be tricky, if the Quadrangle parking garage is full then try the garage across Howell St, it's safe & well-lighted, & free! Oh & make sure to use the potty before the show cause its a small theatre (I was actually in theatre 2, can't comment on 3) & you can't really leave easily without walking across the stage & passing half the audience. A couple of the wife's friends from out of town wanted to catch Avenue Q here and I'm very glad we went. I've probably passed the area hundreds of times going to bars and restaurants but I never knew the theater existed. BTW, if you're coming from the McKinney side, it's nestled in-between an office building towards the back of British Beverage Co. The theater is relatively small but it feels very welcoming. Avenue Q was an awesome show that had us all laughing the time. All seats were good seats, and those of us on the first row even got a little bit of interaction with the performers. During the 15-minute intermission they sell snacks and booze. After the show you even get a chance to take photos with the crew. Theatre Three is definitely a hidden gem in Uptown. Next time you're in the mood to get away from the douchebagery surrounding the area, book yourself some tickets to a show here and you'll have a blast. read more

We live in Plano and drive down to Theatre 3 about 4 times a year. If you've never been it's "round" seating encompassing a small stage. This is a great theatre to take teenagers to because student prices are $10 (pretty sure that's correct). Every seat has a clear view and you're literally on top of the stage. The productions are always entertaining and it's fun to see the stage props moved right before you in between acts. Terrific for theatre tech students. Well worth the trip from anywhere in the Metroplex! read more
