I always think of Kalypso's for special occassions and sporting events, but so far I have only gone when the weather has been nice (never dined inside). The food is great and I especially love the crazy spicy feta appetizer. It can get pretty backed up when crowded (eg Mother's Day) and the timing of the food delivery to the table can be disappointing (our entrees came at the same time as appetizers!) but it is still one of my favorite places to go due to ambiance and variety of food choices. The inside is always grimy, including the bathrooms. I've heard this place referred to as everything from a dive bar to a nice restaurant on the lake. My wife and I have been going to Kalypso's since 2013. We both enjoy Greek and Mediterranean food, and eating outside on the patio with a view of Lake Anne adds to the ambiance. Recently both the quality of the food and the service has deteriorated. When we had dinner there in early April I had Spanakopita and Grilled Shrimp, while my wife had Grilled Bronzini. While my dinner was satisfactory the Bronzini was bland and watery. This was probably due to a grill that wasn't hot enough, and the fish was steamed rather than grilled. With Bronzini high heat is essential to obtain a smoky flavor with a crisp skin. Also, the number of waiters and servers was insufficient, and we had to wait a long time to place our order, receive our food and get the check at the end of our meal. We had dinner there again this weekend and I again had Spanakopita along with a Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken, and my wife again had the Bronzini and Beignet for desert. This time the Bronzini was over cooked and the skin was charred. She should have sent it back to the kitchen, but after waiting over 45 minutes to get our food we were both rather hungry. Beignet is a deep-fried pastry of French origin that is most frequently associated with New Orleans Creole cuisine. It is made from yeast-leavened dough and deep-fried. When properly prepared it is crisp on the outside and airy on the inside and is covered with powdered sugar and served hot. My wife has had Beignet many times at Kalypso's and thoroughly enjoyed it. This time it was awful lumps of fried dough covered with sugar. And again the waiters and servers were significantly understaffed. We had to wait for 30 minutes to place our orders, and while our waiter was polite and helpful this was unacceptable. While I understand a long wait at a busy restaurant with a large number of patrons this wasn't the case. As we were driving home from dinner we decided this would be the last time we would eat at Kalypso's. This is unfortunate, because in the past it was a very nice place for casual dining. read more

I like Kalypso's. I usually order the Greek dishes and have no complaints about them. I usually eat or pick up at the restaurant. Yesterday I ordered delivery, handled by Uber Eats. Big mistake. Kalypso's neglected to secure containers of soup. A lid came loose and spilled the soup over the other food packages and to the bottom of the plastic bag used for the delivery. Is it Kalypso's fault or the Uber driver's? Both, I'd say. The Uber driver was completely useless. He got lost on the short drive from the restaurant to my house. I had to run out to the street to chase him down after he drove down the wrong street. By the time he arrived, about 20 minutes after the projected delivery time, our food was cold. I'll continue to visit Kalypso's, but Uber Eats is off the menu. read more

Vicky, the owner, guided me through the food ordering ensuring I wasn't ordering too much or too little. I believe the service could've been better - what could have been better would be seasoning or flavor in food and service. The scenery was the only reason I gave it really a 3 star service other than that it was pretty much me having to continue to wave to my waiter to come so I can get more water. The French toast, chicken tenders and calamari wasn't the best but their gyros were pretty decent overall I would likely not go there again, but it was a interesting experience thus far and I wish them the best. Good food, good service, great dining companion and a very nice feel to the restaurant. The dining room was empty when we got there as we arrived for a 5:30 reservation on a Saturday evening. More people arrive while we were there, but it certainly wasn't packed. There were a lot more people in the bar area. We ordered some calamari to share as an appetizer and my friend got a Greek platter of various appetizers as her main entree. I got the Greek lamb chops with Greek potatoes and asparagus and it was not only delicious but extremely large. There were a total of six lamb chops, there were two double chops and two single chops. Hence the reason I brought some home. We shared a beignet dessert for two and it was served with a delicious chocolate sauce which really made it perfect. The food came out perfectly hot and very delicious. I've been here a number of times in the past and I love everything I've had here. When it's warm enough outside, they have a beautiful outdoor area under umbrellas and it is very nice looking out over the water. This is also a great place to come to watch a football game on Thursday night, Sunday, and Monday nights. They have a variety of activities here that go from trivia night to karaoke to live music and every night it's something else. While I do want to applaud this place for the success that the family has had in opening multiple locations, particularly in competitive markets, as well as the initial excitement I had for going to a Mediterranean restaurant as Greek and Italian foods and flavors are among my favorite, I have to say that I was mildly disappointed. I'll start with the good. It is in a very cute ensconced hybrid office and residential area by the water, one of several tiny neighborhoods adjacent to the water within Reston. While I have frequented all of the other areas, I had actually never come across this one until I came to patronize this restaurant. A happy surprise to be exposed to such a great location which also feels so hidden and tucked away, which I am a huge fan of. But alas, a Georgetown Waterfront it is not. And it can be quite crowded in certain places. Though no fault of the establishment I also did not always feel welcome as some of the other patrons would give me dirty looks when I would simply be within their vicinity, in order to pay the bill. You might ask yourself, why was I so close to other patrons when trying to pay the bill, exactly? Well friends, I had to approach the waitress when I saw her in order to begin the process to check out, as the wait time was quite significant and I did not wish to dawdle. Why was it so long? Well, there was only one waitress when I went. Is this normal? Is this a regular expectation? Does this happen with significant frequency? I cannot say and I do not know but I can only judge based on the experience I had when I visited. It was quite sad to see someone so overworked. With that said, the view is okay. And the ambiance is okay. It is just too crowded and something which feels too townie to the point that I, even as a local, did not feel welcome. I could only imagine how it would have been were it fully packed, as it is equipped to handle more patrons than were there; to the point you would feel like, were it at capacity, you were at a rave in Vegas. But this is supposed to be a small, quaint community. My interpretation of an ill-advised juxtaposition, anyways. But I want to reiterate that the server was lovely and trying her absolute best. The food is interesting but not particularly different nor exceptional. The prices are acceptable but not particularly spectacular nor accommodating. The portions are acceptable but not impressive. All in all I wanted to offer 2 stars for this review, but I took a rare departure from my normal procedure and graded up rather than down. Why? Well, there are multiple locations, again, in highly competitive areas. I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt that, given their success, I simply caught them on a bad day. Also the waitress was truly remarkable in maintaining her duty without any assistance, and to do so with great hospitality and demeanor. Lastly, it is a lovely surrounding area; especially for a Saturday morning. On the ambiance, I will say that there was no music at all --- which is weird to me --- even as a guy who regularly quips that too loud or discordant music ruins the vibe of a place; or ability to socialize. All in all, I might return. Or, were my benefit of the doubt incorrect, one could opine this seems like a place that was once good but is no longer. First timer and I actually liked it . When you park in the lot , you will be like - where is this place .. but when you turn around the main building and go backside , you will be amazed . The karaoke is usually first rate. However make sure you can pay the ENTIRE bar tab THAT SAME NIGHT or you will lose many friends there ( this is not the only place like this). I was nearly abducted MORE THAN ONCE and had to FIGHT MY WAY OUT because I couldn't cover the entire bar tab. This is quite common these days. Yet they seem relaxed, making you feel relaxed. It feels like you're on an outing with old friends. The owner: obviously the great staff is a reflection of the owner. From attention to detail ( she's knows my favorite spot in her restaurant and my favorite football team- and try's to accommodate both) to her buzzing around her restaurant to make sure it's a fine oiled machine. Year in and year out, she show pride of ownership. The food: somewhat Greek in influence. But from light fare to a more robust meal, they never disappoint. Ever. Came here to during Pride Celebration and stop at the restaurant to have an early lunch inside the bar Elmer was our server. He was kind enough in the beginning and got our drink orders and food to us. Then the manager came in and she sent our server outdoors to tables and had him rushing in and out with outdoor tables and this made him absent from getting our table follow-up drinks. He apologized multiple times as we paid. The bigger issue was the ambiance caused by the female manager when she came in. She was very loud speaking and was very disrespectful to her servers by barking orders and telling them what they did wrong. She wanted to control everything that was ordered behind the bar. She was rude to customers in the bar area and needed to know she caused a very negative atmosphere for all her customers. She is the reason I lowered my review to 3 stars. The food was great and the ambiance was fine until she arrived on scene. I recommend that she have someone share a video with her showing that she is a very poor manager and role model for her employees.... I felt very sorry for her staff. Next time we will eat outside to not experience such unprofessional behavior. read more

Kalypso's is a dive bar on Lake Anne. The inside of the place is in need of an upgrade that brings it into the 21st century. The outdoor seating is nice but there are too many tables and chairs. The staff is friendly but disorganized. You don't know who is the hostess, waitress, or food runner at any time. My wife and I decided to get dinner on a wonderful spring evening. We were quickly seated but it felt like a maze walking through all of the seats and tables. Several tables needed to be cleared while we were there. We both ordered gyros. They took about 25 minutes to come out. My wife's mixed drink came out after the food did. Overall, the food was good and affordable but the management needs to straighten up a few things there. read more

Could have given this a solid 3-star review because the food is very good. I've come here weekly for a while with a small group playing trivia on Thursday nights. Whether we arrive early or on time, the service is always the same: painfully slow. Tonight I came here at 6:45 PM to join my friend already seated. I tried to order at least an appetizer and a drink before happy hour specials ended at 7 PM. Except our waiter let us sit there until 7:05 PM and then told us that the happy hour prices on cocktails and appetizers no longer applied. His loss because my tab would have been higher, and thus his tip would have been higher too, had he been more attentive. I've tried many of the appetizers, but my favorite is the spanakopita. It's very flaky and crisp on the outside, and a very flavorful spinach and cheese inside. It comes with three large triangles, and if you don't finish your appetizer and need to take it home, I highly recommend using your air fryer to crisp it back up again the next day. For cocktails, lately I've been drinking the spicy pineapple margarita with muddled jalapeño. It has a little kick to it, but not so spicy that you're sweating in the A/C. For dinner, I typically get the chicken souvlaki which normally comes with fries but I swap out for a small Greek salad. I also highly recommend a side order of broccolini, which they sauté in a tasty way with garlic. They have a really nice patio outside with umbrellas, so if it's a nice night I recommend being seated there. I also recommend thoroughly reviewing your check, especially if you've got more than one person on it. My last two visits I found errors and was charged for things I didn't order. All in all, food is very good. For food, it would have been a solid three star rating, like I said. Unfortunately I have to deduct a star for super slow service that I have experienced weekly over the last three months without fail. We sat there tonight for 3 hours and our water glasses were not refilled once. We waited 90 minutes to get our entrées. I drank one cocktail because the waiter never came back and asked if I wanted another. If this was just an off night, I could easily overlook it. Coming here on Thursdays for trivia week after week, and never seeing any improvement in service, I can't help but offer only a two star rating. read more

The service was excellent, the food was quite good, and overall we were very impressed with our experience. I had the gyro sandwich, and my husband had the chicken souvlaki. I have been here a few times through the years. It seems the one problem doesn't seem to improve: bad service. Based on the other reviews, it seems we are not the only ones that have experienced these issues. How can a restaurant be in business for such a long time, get the same comments from so many people, but fail to correct the problems? Oftentimes, the service is slow and/or unpredictable. One time, after being seated no server came by. I had to track down the host to figure out who was the server for our table. Other times, the waiter takes a long time to take our orders. The last time we were here, the new manager came by to introduce himself and said that he was hired to solve the problems. Apparently not...yesterday, we sat at the bar and waited for 20 minutes for someone to take our order...there was no one around...we decided to go next door to Cafe Montmartre. Sure, the location is nice, especially outdoor seating and the food is ok (hit or miss depending on what you order). But the hassle is just not worth it...there is an alternative. read more

I made a reservation online with Resy. We arrived at our respected reservation time. There were several diners in front of us who were waiting for the hostess to seat them. It took several minutes for hostess to come back to help the diners in front of us. Two different parties were tired of waiting so they left and went to another near by restaurant. We waited 15 minutes for the hostess to finally come ask if we had a reservation or not. She told us that they overbooked the patio and she has to bus the tables and seat them. We get seated and place our orders. They brought soup to our table that was cold. The rest of our food started coming out two at a time. My husband ordered the Kalypso special pizza. The waiter totally forgot to put the order in. The rest of our family was done eating and he still had no pizza. We told three different waiters none of them seemed to really care or apologize. We asked for the bill and the pizza came out. The pizza it's self had very little flavor. I ordered the grilled shrimp entree, it was such a sad selection of food. I had 6 medium overly salty and burnt shrimp with three asparagus and two wedges of potatoes. During our meal we had the food runner come up to our table three times asking if we ordered whatever it was he was holding, all while my husband was waiting for his pizza. It's really a shame because this place used to be great, the service and the food need serious help from the owners. When we got up to leave we saw the hostess collecting cups off the tables and then proceeded to pour whatever liquids that were left in the cups from the previous table INTO THE POTTED PLANTS. I'd really like to give this restaurant and bar five stars and tell you how I rave about it. Sadly, however, it is a reflection of the Lake Anne area surrounding it...sad, weathered, and ultimately boring. I took my family here for dinner recently. I had been before for lunch, and was pleased. The atmosphere is bright, and the fact that you can look out onto the man-made lake is a big plus. We chose outdoor seating to enjoy the view. We waited to be seated for a few minutes, and the maître d' asked us what we wanted. Obviously, we wanted to sit down. I found her attitude, strange, but didn't make much of it. Our server, was this older lady who didn't know the specials on the menu. We ordered a pizza for the kids and a Greek salad for us adults to begin with. They came out after 10 to 15 minutes with no issues. And then, our server left. I don't know if she was off shift or what had happened. We called out to her, and she didn't respond-just kept walking. Again, I didn't make much of it. However, we wanted to order our main food, and there was no one to take our order. Some other employee (obviously not a server) tried to put in my shepherd's pie order, to no avail. We didn't hear from her again. After 45 minutes, we tracked down the manager to see about getting some service. I mean, it's as if the restaurant just shut down. Mind you, we were seated at 6:30 PM, so there's no way. The manager had no idea where the server was or why she had left. She had no idea if the shepherd's pie order was put in or not. In the end, after two hours, we left confounded as to what had happened and still hungry. I had a good view of what was happening inside the restaurant. There was a salsa dance class some people were prepping for. I cannot say with a surety that the patrons who were seated for dinner were shooed out, although it sure looked like it. In the end, the food wasn't actually all that bad. This is a shame because everything else about this restaurant is just terrible. read more

I came here for a recent paint night and it was pretty fun! The set up was great, outdoors so we could enjoy the nice weather under the outdoor umbrellas! At first I was a little worried that It was going to be difficult to hear because it was a little loud outside; however it needed up being fine! The only downside was that servers don't really come by the tables for painting and there seemed to be a break issue where 2/3 of the bartenders went on break at the same time, leaving the bar understaffed and slow to serve drinks. I would come again on a paint night and hopefully the bartenders can sort out their break issues! read more

The service here has declined considerably. Be prepared to wait 30 minutes for a table because the hostess is nowhere to be found usually. If you made a reservation they don't care. Once you finally get seated, you don't get your drink orders taken until 25 minutes later. You'll get your first drink about 25 minutes after that may even be wrong. I don't know where all the waiters and waitresses went. Hire some college kids. Do something about the poor service. Furthermore good luck on putting your order in for your entrees because that will take about 35 minutes. You'll have to remind the waitress you haven't even put your order in yet. The you'll get your food eventually but instead of one hour and a half, your dinner will last 3 hours. Sorry but they need major help. It's a shame too because Kalypsos has a beautiful outdoor space that's great for the summers! read more
