We were really craving some good chinese food and decided to try this place. The restaurant is located right off the highway so it's pretty easy to miss the entrance to the parking. There were a lot of pick up orders ahead of us so we had to wait a little bit to get our food. We tried a couple of things off the menu..(it was a lot of food for 2 people ). Right off the bat I can say that the noodles were great. The clams did not disappoint either. The only thing that we didn't enjoy was the pork soup. Wow, very sub-par, marfar chicken was overcooked, dark and tough, and they used the wrong type of batter for authentic stuff. the sweet and sour chicken was highly questionable and had a very odd flavor. The sweet and sour sauce looks like grapefruit cum...i don't even know what that is..., and the almond chicken...I can't. Won't be going here again. Mother's Day at the coast we had a change of plans and decided to go out to dinner instead of cooking at our campsite. We knew most places would be booked with reservations or long wait times so we took a chance and tried this place. Well ... it was just ok. Like I probably wouldn't go out of my way to come back here. The food was passable nothing great or bad just mediocre. No great flavor profiles. Tasted like lackluster at its best. I do like that they have combination plates so you can try a variety of items at once. The fried shrimp were good with great crunch. The bbq pork fried rice was good and the appetizers of steamed clams and crab puffs were great. The chicken almondine was also good but the egg foo young was not my favorite and I am an egg foo young lover. The house fried rice was an anemic blend of chicken and maybe beef with bean sprouts and tasted like it was only seasoned with soy. Husband and I married in Newport in 2001 and have been coming to Kam Meng's ever since whenever we visit. It was originally in a small eatery on the bay but we prefer it's current location at the north end of Newport because there is more room than at the previous location Gentleman wait staff was quick and efficient. Very pleasant and yet not chatty. My husband ordered the Special Seafood Pot as usual. That is his favorite dish and it did not disappoint. The delicious broth flavored mussels, shrimp, rockfish, clams, oysters, and scallops. His hot and sour soup was quite good, and fairly hot spice-wise. I had vegetable low mein, fried shrimp, crab rangoon and an egg roll. It was probably the best low mein I've ever had. The noodles were so flavorful and delicious. Veg included green beans, carrots, bean sprouts and cabbage. The rangoon was my favorite kind, with cream cheese and imitation crab. Though some people prefer real crab, I don't and prefer imitation. The only complaint I had was that I thought my Arnold Palmer tea was abysmal. It tasted like powdered lemonade meets powdered tea. As always, we enjoyed dinner and will continue to make Kam Meng's our #1 go-to spot for dinner when we are in Newport and wanting something other than fried seafood. read more

I have driven past Kam Meng many times and rarely see any cars in the parking lot so I was skeptical. I was also a little out off by some of the mixed Yelp reviews but decided to try it out and decide for myself. I ordered the spring rolls, crab puffs, vegetable lo mein and vegetable fried rice. Unfortunately, only the vegetable fried rice lasted long enough to be featured in this review. The spring rolls were crispy on the outside which was great but a little too salty on the inside. The crab puffs were good, heavy on the cream cheese. The vegetable lo mien was very good. The lo mein noodles seemed different than what I have had from other restaurants but I still liked it. It had an almost smokey flavor to it that I really enjoyed. Again, different from what I have had in the past. The vegetable fried rice was also good. It basically tasted the same as the lo mein, just rice instead of noodles. The only big miss was the sweet and sour sauce that came with the crab puffs. It had a very strange, thick, almost jelly like texture that was not appetizing. A small portion of the meal so not a big deal for me. If it had been a primary ingredient one of my dishes, I would have been disappointed. The host/server was courteous while ordering and picking up. I was wooed into the place by the front of their takeout menu, which was left at a vacation rental, and advertised their seafood hot pot. I'm a fan of clay pot cooking and I've had some of the best around the world. This was a bunch of seafood, boiled in water, then dumped in a clay pot for effect. Very hot but rubbery and with no real flavor. Also ordered the Kam Meng Special Lo Mein Noodles, which had no special ingredients and were drowned if just splain soy sauce with a little something in it. I just can't imagine a cook who regularly makes Chinese food did this. So the food was terrible. And the place was small and kind of depressing. I'm so into this place. The lady that runs it is AMAZING. Every time I'm there, we talk about tea. They have this big display of all these amazing unique teas I've never seen anywhere and she's an authority on them all! Aside from her (which really makes the experience a 5-star), the food is rad. Typically don't leave reviews, but we decided to stop by as we were driving by the coast to our airbnb as we saw some good reviews. We decided to order one vegetable and one pork noodle soups, 1 stir fried noodles, and the barbecue pork. To start with, our waiter seemed almost annoyed with our presence and even managed to get our order of the vegetable noodle soup wrong, Unfortunately we soon came to realize that we had larger issues, and that we should have ate anywhere else. The pork was lukewarm to cold at best with portions being beyond minuscule compared to the hefty price tag. The broth in both noodle soups were beyond bland, even for someone like me who prefers clearer and milder tasting broths. The noodles seriously tasted as if they were dunked in warm water and served. The stir fried noodles were the only truly edible dish and even then, we were disappointed in its quality and taste. I really don't even mean to be picky, but man this place's ambiance was also just off. It felt as if we were sitting in an abandoned building. Yelp reviews pointed us to this green colored Chinese restaurant located right opposite the Pacific blues while we were driving up north back to Portland. Pleasant decor, polite and friendly service and the food was quite good. For dinner, you can either opt for the buffet or order using their regular menu. When we showed an inclination towards their buffet, the waitress (owner?) informed us that they were having a slow day and their buffet food may not be very fresh. Oh well, their dinner menu was huge and there was plenty to choose from. Chicken potstickers for apps was a good start. Ginger chicken, spicy green bean chicken and curry chicken were some of the best Chinese food I've had in a while. I'm having a hard time deciding which of these three I liked the most. Our group also ordered the sweet and sour chicken and General Tso's chicken. Both were a trifle too sweet for my liking. A crab entrée turned out to be quite challenging (tiring) to eat but from what I heard, it was quite tasty. The server recommended one entrée per person as optimal but the quantity was a lot and we had plenty of leftovers to carry along.
