This busy fish market in Newport, Oregon is building quite a good reputation. When we were there, they had a Michelin Star guest chef in residence, so expectations were high. There is an elevator to the upstairs dining room, which was nice for my wife, who has mobility issues. There were bathrooms on both floors and a Bar upstairs. The prices are also high, but food is high quality. Waitress was friendly and excited to tell us about the food. Unfortunately, because of my project of finding the best fish and chips on the Oregon coast, that's what we ordered. We really should have gotten the Fishwives Stew, or something off of the special menu. It was self sabotage. We split the fish and chips, and had a cup each of the clam chowder. The Chowder was herbal and thick, with potatoes, carrots and, of course, clams. The flavor was unusual, perhaps too unusual. The herbs overpower the clams. It's clam chowder, not herb chowder. It works well with the provided focaccia bread, but, again, it's supposed to be clam chowder. The fish and chips had their ups and downs. First, the slaw: it was made from fennel root, with dill and a light amount of vinegar. It was pleasant, and understated. Not too sweet. The fries: Crisp, but pedestrian. I could have gotten them at Mo's. The tartar sauce: Excellent, like I make it at home. Not too sweet with plenty of relish. The Fish: Breaded with Panko, delicate and pan fried. We got the Pacific Halibut. Excellent flavor with no oily feel or taste. 8 out of 10. The fish and chips were good, but not good enough to have missed out on the resident chef menu. Such a beautiful location. The staff was very friendly and they were packed for this labor day weekend but the wait wasnt bad. The food was amazing, seafood was fresh. What really impressed me the most was their raw oysters on a half shell. So creative with the flavors! I never had oysters with berries. The freshness was amazing and really complimented the oysters. I also ordered steamed clams which was yummy and the Brazilian stew but it was more like thai tom khar with seafood less strong. One of the BEST restaurants we have gone to! The fish and chips were nice and not heavy or greasy. I liked having the option of what type of fish you can get. Good crunch on the breading. The soup is well seasoned and had a hearty amount of meat, paired well with the cheesy base. The tuna skewers were PERFECTION, they were the perfect balance of fat, acidity, and herbaceous-ness. We also tried the fish tacos which come loaded with fish and nice accompaniments. The waitstaff are friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We really felt taken care of there. The restaurant is warm and breezy, and they have a nice patio dining option if you want a view of the harbor. Don't let the price scare you away, it is totally worth it. Everyone loved their entrees. We had a seafood salad that seemed never ending. Oyster shooters with a local berry sauce. Salmon dinner, and cod with a cream sauce. Scallops on top of a toasted bread with seasoning. I can say that each was a OMG moment. Server was very pleasant and provided a great review of the Chef and his specialty menu. She knew all the menu items which helped us to make decisions. We've eaten around the grill on the first floor previously. We went to the second floor which was a lot more quieter. Made lunch reservations at 12 to celebrate my husband's birthday. We arrived on time, but had to wait about 5 minutes for them to set the table up. Luckily the manager showed up at the podium before we were seated and moved us to a window table. They weren't very busy, so not sure why they didn't have us in the window to begin with since I did indicate a birthday celebration in my reservation. Unfortunately, when they moved us to the table, they forgot to move the birthday celebration placard, so our server had no idea. I had to ask him if they do anything for birthdays when he asked if we wanted dessert. A little awkward, but at least my husband got a special birthday dessert with a candle. If everything would have ran more smoothly, it would have been a 5 star visit. Our only other issue is the automatic 20% 'service charge'. I used it as the tip; however, other restaurants in the Portland/Vancouver area who list this on their menus have a 3% charge. 20% seems pretty high for customers to help pay employee wages and benefits. I don't feel that's a customer's responsibility, but more an employers obligation. The wording does rub me wrong, but they do have signage at the front podium, placards in the bill book, and the servers were going out of their way to mention it to customers when they gave them the bill. I think it would be better to just raise prices or just call it an automatic 20% gratuity. Just my two cents. We ordered the seasonal No Quarter cocktail. My husband loved it! He also had an oyster shooter. He said it tasted very fresh. For entrees we ordered the lingcod fish & chips, and the crab & pink shrimp louie salad. My husband loved his salad! He said the seafood was fresh. My lingcod was okay. I didn't really care for the breading and prefer smaller pieces I can pick up to dip in the tartar sauce. The fillet kept falling apart. I didn't care for the fennel in the coleslaw either. It was too overpowering. My husband enjoyed it though. The fries were cooked perfectly and not too greasy. My husband enjoyed his strawberry rhubarb parfait for his complimentary birthday dessert. I ordered the chocolate pot de crema and it was absolutely delicious! We travel frequently and love seafood- this restaurant is probably a 3.5 restaurant. Not available to put. Starting with the ambience- we choose to eat downstairs based on the restaurant saying it's lively, open kitchen etc. it's just a small restaurant vibe that's honestly a bit noisy. Nothing exciting. Our table was decent. Our server was Megan and she was very friendly, accommodating and checked on us frequently. Top notch service. The good. We had the tuna kabobs for an appetizer. My husband thought they were good, I didn't. I thought they were bland and no flavor. We had the fishwives soup and the Mediterranean shellfish trofie dish. Both were boiling hot! I mean this as a huge positive! My husband said the fish wives soup was good, not outstanding. I really enjoyed the trofie dish- the smoked salmon was wonderful! I wish it had a little more sauce and the flavor was good- just lacking something? I had to add a lot of salt if that says something of what I mean. I had a glass of Sauvignon Blanc that was very good, (the only one they offer, I believe?) and she even brought the bottle over so I could see the label to take a picture. If getting to the nitty gritty, my husband's ice tea was weak. Would we go back? Probably not. Was it good and worth going too? Absolutely! We would just want different menu options they don't have. This is the spot that everyone recommends for dinner in Newport. We rolled up early on a rainy Saturday night and were told it would be a 45 minute wait. Thankfully it was about 20 minutes or so, time to go say hi to the sea lions and then come back to a table. We were seated upstairs, but not near the window. The rockfish decor is stylish and fun, I really liked the aesthetic and ambience. The service was wonderful! My water glass was never empty and our server was incredibly warm and friendly. We started with the Roasted Garlic and Dungeness Crab Soup, which was full of cheese and big chunks of crab meat. The flavor was garlic forward, but still well balanced. It was served with a couple of pieces of soft focaccia, a lovely touch. We also had their House Salad and were pleasantly surprised. It had mixed greens, tomato, cucumber, and parmesan with a Dijon vinaigrette. It was fresh and delicious, would recommend! My husband had the Grilled Hoisin Black Cod which he enjoyed. It was a flavorful veggie filled yakisoba dish. My daughter had the fish tacos, which she enjoyed. I went with the crab cakes and fries. I'm a bit picky about my crab cakes, but these were pretty good. I do wish that they had a bit of a more golden crust and were warmer. We decided to get dessert too, since the meal was so good. We went with their homemade ice cream of the day which was strawberry coconut. I liked the the flavor, but the texture was a little icy. We also got the Fruit Parfait, which was a delight. The fruit was fresh and flavorful and the lemon shortbread cookie crumbles and berry coulis brought some extra brightness. It was a nice light and sweet way to end the meal, highly recommend. We had a reservation and they took us in a few minutes early and sat us upstairs. We sat near the window that overlooks the harbor and could see it from our table. Very pretty. There is a bar area and other tables that are away from the window that don't have the same view. When we were approached by the waitress, she informed us that they were out of Dungeness crab. Our reservation was at 6:15 PM. Seems a bit odd that a town known for Dungeness crab and the restaurant doesn't have it during peak dinner hours. My husband ordered a cup of clam chowder, and I ordered a cup of the Dungeness crab soup. I loved the creaminess of my soup. However, it was not served hot. Also, there were so many shells in my soup that every bite I had to remove one from my mouth. I do believe that the roux sauce had too much flour and was not mixed well. The clam chowder was not creamy, but had a good flavor. Chunks of carrot and celery. Both soups were served with a portion of bread. The bread was good. We shared the salmon dish. We asked our waitress if we could have the peas on the side as my husband has an allergy to peas. She was quick to tell me that there would be no substitutions. I informed her I was merely asking for the peas to put on a separate dish when brought to the table. She said that she would need to clear it with the kitchen first. Apparently, they approved, as the peas were served on the side. We did enjoy the salmon. It is cooked, medium rare. However, the middle of the salmon fillet was more rare. The buttery sauce was delicious and the asparagus was cooked very well. The mushrooms were delicious. The restaurant is very casual. The outside is not much to look at. The service was fine, but not exceptional. The food was good, but my expectations were so much higher for all of the accolades I had heard prior to dining. They add an automatic tip of 20% to every tab. Then on the bill, they politely ask for an additional gratuity. This place has been up dated over the years, making the most of the location near the docks where the fish comes in fresh. All fish is currently fresh! I'm GF, not a problem problem. There's not a lot of great restaurants on the Oregon coast, but this is one of them. Absolutely outstanding food and service. Unexpectedly good wine list, too. Book reservation in advance, walk ins will wait. Wife and I went for a late lunch and sat upstairs with a great view of the bay and bridge. Got a bottle of Cristom Chardonnay, a crab cake app, fishermans roll, and the Halibut and Peaches. Everything was excellent, including service. Would absolutely eat here again. The Halibut and Peaches was unlike anything I've seen anywhere else and I can't stop thinking about it. Unusual and absolutely divine flavors. Crab cake was perfection. We had an absolutely incredible collection of thoughtful seafood dishes at Local Ocean. This is the place to savor unique pairings and try new things, unrushed, unafraid. This is not the place for a quick, inexpensive meal. We sat downstairs, overlooking both the kitchen and fishing boats in the port, both of which kept us entertained. Our personal menu included, a collection of cocktails (unique, delightful), grilled oysters (green garlic, miso, lemon), urchin / uni (new for us!), smoked salmon deviled eggs, cioppino fish stew, halibut and peaches, chocolate mousse tart. Grilled oysters and urchin were from the resident chef's menu, the whole of which sounded amazing. My favorite bite was a grilled oyster, my partner's favorite bite was buttered bread dipped in cioppino broth. Everything tasted spectacular. The only dish I was less enthused by was the price of a smoked salmon deviled egg ($3.50 for a half egg feels crazy, although in this economy, I kind of get it). We shared everything, which was more than enough to feed two normal-level-hungry adults. We had been mountain biking all day, so naturally cleaned our plates. Joaquin took great care of us, and all waitstaff were attentive with water service. Water glasses were never empty. This is often lacking in restaurants, and I was especially impressed with the team at Local Ocean that I wanted to point it out. Seating took about 30 minutes but they're a popular and busy place so that's normal. The prices are higher than I'm accustomed to when eating out. I'm not a shellfish person but the grilled oysters were delicious. The clam chowder isn't as thick as an east coast one but is still very good. The fish and chips with Lingcod was fall apart in your mouth and sometimes on the fork. Some seating has a view into the kitchen which is an open style. The Kindly Ones was a mojito type refreshing cocktail and the Bloody Mary had a great kick. We started with the roasted garlic crab soup. This was amazing and rich. The soup was very creamy with a substantial amount of fresh crab meat and cheese in the middle of it. The bread served with it was fresh and not to be missed when dipped in the soup. We split the Fish Tacos al pastor. Plenty of delicious fish and a variety of flavors brought these to life. I would order this again (and the soup). Service was great as well. Local Ocean used to be our spot when we lived in Corvallis! Since moving to the PDX suburbs, we hadn't visited in 3+ years. We were able to go this past week and it was as good as we remembered it! We went for lunch on a weekday and were promptly seated. My husband doesn't eat seafood so we always orders the burger with white cheddar and bacon, and says it's the best burger he's ever had. I of course, had to go with the Fishwives Stew. It was as fabulous as ever, with huge pieces of fish and crab and plenty of clams. The bread chunks included are to die for. Our server was kind enough to offer that the kitchen could crack the crab for us, saving a hassle for my two young kids, and saving me the mess. A true game changer! The menu has a lot of variety, including several varieties of seafood that are not readily available in the middle of the country. Everything was outstanding from the ambience to the service to the food. It was a beautiful day and the sliding windows/doors were open to the salty sea air. What a treat! The Sea Platter included geoduck clams, red abalone, uni (sea urchin), butter clams, oysters and gooseneck barnacles. You have to get over the appearance, which I found visually similar to an ancient reptile toe, of the barnacles, but they were tasty. Hubby and I shared the Razor Clam Chowder and the Roasted Garlic and Dungeness Crab Soups. OMG they were to die for, especially the crab soup. I had the Moqueca De Peixe (Brazilian Stew) with rockfish, scallops, wild prawns, Dungeness crab, mushroom, red bell pepper, tomato, onion, green curry-coconut milk broth, and cilantro. Hubby had the Wild Chinook Salmon which was pan-roasted skin-on medium-rare , with summer squash, corn, maitake mushrooms, Romano beans, and a beurre monte. Every stay at Depeo Bay we make the trek to Newport (not just once, but twice) since this is our fave spot on the Oregon Coast. I was bummed out to hear that my fave plate (salmon) was discontinued.
