Nate 2026 Newport, Oregon Came here based on recommendations from somebody in Bend, Oregon, and a local. I will start by saying I was not impressed. We had a reservation and they took us in a few minutes early and sat us upstairs. We sat near the window that overlooks the harbor and could see it from our table. Very pretty. There is a bar area and other tables that are away from the window that don't have the same view. When we were approached by the waitress, she informed us that they were out of Dungeness crab. Our reservation was at 6:15 PM. Seems a bit odd that a town known for Dungeness crab and the restaurant doesn't have it during peak dinner hours. My husband ordered a cup of clam chowder, and I ordered a cup of the Dungeness crab soup. I loved the creaminess of my soup. However, it was not served hot. Also, there were so many shells in my soup that every bite I had to remove one from my mouth. I do believe that the roux sauce had too much flour and was not mixed well. The clam chowder was not creamy, but had a good flavor. Chunks of carrot and celery. Both soups were served with a portion of bread. The bread was good. We shared the salmon dish. We asked our waitress if we could have the peas on the side as my husband has an allergy to peas. She was quick to tell me that there would be no substitutions. I informed her I was merely asking for the peas to put on a separate dish when brought to the table. She said that she would need to clear it with the kitchen first. Apparently, they approved, as the peas were served on the side. We did enjoy the salmon. It is cooked, medium rare. However, the middle of the salmon fillet was more rare. The buttery sauce was delicious and the asparagus was cooked very well. The mushrooms were delicious. The restaurant is very casual. The outside is not much to look at. The service was fine, but not exceptional. The food was good, but my expectations were so much higher for all of the accolades I had heard prior to dining. They add an automatic tip of 20% to every tab. Then on the bill, they politely ask for an additional gratuity. Made lunch reservations at 12 to celebrate my husband's birthday. We arrived on time, but had to wait about 5 minutes for them to set the table up. Luckily the manager showed up at the podium before we were seated and moved us to a window table. They weren't very busy, so not sure why they didn't have us in the window to begin with since I did indicate a birthday celebration in my reservation. Unfortunately, when they moved us to the table, they forgot to move the birthday celebration placard, so our server had no idea. I had to ask him if they do anything for birthdays when he asked if we wanted dessert. A little awkward, but at least my husband got a special birthday dessert with a candle. If everything would have ran more smoothly, it would have been a 5 star visit. Our only other issue is the automatic 20% 'service charge'. I used it as the tip; however, other restaurants in the Portland/Vancouver area who list this on their menus have a 3% charge. 20% seems pretty high for customers to help pay employee wages and benefits. I don't feel that's a customer's responsibility, but more an employers obligation. The wording does rub me wrong, but they do have signage at the front podium, placards in the bill book, and the servers were going out of their way to mention it to customers when they gave them the bill. I think it would be better to just raise prices or just call it an automatic 20% gratuity. Just my two cents. We ordered the seasonal No Quarter cocktail. My husband loved it! He also had an oyster shooter. He said it tasted very fresh. For entrees we ordered the lingcod fish & chips, and the crab & pink shrimp louie salad. My husband loved his salad! He said the seafood was fresh. My lingcod was okay. I didn't really care for the breading and prefer smaller pieces I can pick up to dip in the tartar sauce. The fillet kept falling apart. I didn't care for the fennel in the coleslaw either. It was too overpowering. My husband enjoyed it though. The fries were cooked perfectly and not too greasy. My husband enjoyed his strawberry rhubarb parfait for his complimentary birthday dessert. I ordered the chocolate pot de crema and it was absolutely delicious! Great views of the historic Yaquina bay while seated on 1 of 2 levels. My wife and I love it all! Our favorite delish dish is Grilled Hoisin Blackcod (super omega 3) with asparagus, green beans, oranges, shiitake mushroom, onion, red bell pepper, yakisoba noodles and sesame seeds. So scrumptious blackcod brandade special of the day with cured blackcod, Kennebeck potato, olive oil, sour cream, confit garlic, sharp white cheddar - baked gratin style with soubise sauce of spring onion and cream butter - wow! Asparagus side dish prepared with a pefect crunch not over cooked. The "Best" anywhere Dungeness crab cake you'll bite. Oh, canned hook and line caught albacore tuna to go. And we are going back 2 days in a row for more more more fresh seafood! read more

This is the spot that everyone recommends for dinner in Newport. We rolled up early on a rainy Saturday night and were told it would be a 45 minute wait. Thankfully it was about 20 minutes or so, time to go say hi to the sea lions and then come back to a table. We were seated upstairs, but not near the window. The rockfish decor is stylish and fun, I really liked the aesthetic and ambience. The service was wonderful! My water glass was never empty and our server was incredibly warm and friendly. We started with the Roasted Garlic and Dungeness Crab Soup, which was full of cheese and big chunks of crab meat. The flavor was garlic forward, but still well balanced. It was served with a couple of pieces of soft focaccia, a lovely touch. We also had their House Salad and were pleasantly surprised. It had mixed greens, tomato, cucumber, and parmesan with a Dijon vinaigrette. It was fresh and delicious, would recommend! My husband had the Grilled Hoisin Black Cod which he enjoyed. It was a flavorful veggie filled yakisoba dish. My daughter had the fish tacos, which she enjoyed. I went with the crab cakes and fries. I'm a bit picky about my crab cakes, but these were pretty good. I do wish that they had a bit of a more golden crust and were warmer. We decided to get dessert too, since the meal was so good. We went with their homemade ice cream of the day which was strawberry coconut. I liked the the flavor, but the texture was a little icy. We also got the Fruit Parfait, which was a delight. The fruit was fresh and flavorful and the lemon shortbread cookie crumbles and berry coulis brought some extra brightness. It was a nice light and sweet way to end the meal, highly recommend. Review for Local Ocean seafood: We stopped for lunch. Ordered the "Kindly Ones and Spicy Bloody Mary" cocktails. These were delicious. The Kindly Ones was a mojito type refreshing cocktail and the Bloody Mary had a great kick. We started with the roasted garlic crab soup. This was amazing and rich. The soup was very creamy with a substantial amount of fresh crab meat and cheese in the middle of it. The bread served with it was fresh and not to be missed when dipped in the soup. We split the Fish Tacos al pastor. Plenty of delicious fish and a variety of flavors brought these to life. I would order this again (and the soup). Service was great as well. We placed our order for the scallops, crab cakes and the wild salmon. The scallops were delicious! I could eat another order by myself. My husband ordered the wild chinook salmon and said it was okay. The crab cakes were okay as well. For some reason, it was a bit too mushy for my taste. But the French fries were on point. We're out of towners and Local Ocean was recommended to us for our first visit to Newport in 2024. We made a reservation in 2024 and subsequently made reservations to come the following two nights, 2025 we made reservations for both nights we were staying in Newport, 2026 reservations for last night and that concludes our obsession with Local Ocean. When my husband and I walked in last night to the restaurant and were seated upstairs, we each gave each other other quizzical look? Something's different... First question out of our waiter's mouth was are you ready to order? We were able to back it up and ask for a cocktail first. My margarita was fantastic, the perfect Manhattan was diluted. We ordered the blackcod off the specials, room temperature and a grainy consistency. Half a dozen oysters, only two out of the three oysters were identified. We got the roasted lingcod it was pretty darn good with a tasty citrusy broth and the pasta special with calamari, which was light on flavor. We were able to catch our waiter's eye to get the dessert menu before he brought us our check. What did see a couple of waitstaff from our previous visits, but ended up with somebody that we hadn't had before. A little looking on the Internet shows that they have had a change in ownership/management. You can tell. Where I once thought the food and service at Local Ocean was pretty special, I think it now just falls into the regular good seafood restaurant category. We will not go out of our way to come back. Went here to celebrate my mom's birthday dinner and it didn't disappoint. Great table overlooking the water and Raven gave great service. Everything was delish. We had the clam chowder, dozen oysters, Uni (which was the best we've had), fishwives stew, miso tuna, albacore tuna wrap. For drinks we had Bloody Mary's, old fashioned and espresso martinis. We enjoyed a fantastic dinner (October 2025) when we walked in for a late dinner. The menu has a lot of variety, including several varieties of seafood that are not readily available in the middle of the country. Local Ocean used to be our spot when we lived in Corvallis! Since moving to the PDX suburbs, we hadn't visited in 3+ years. We were able to go this past week and it was as good as we remembered it! We went for lunch on a weekday and were promptly seated. My husband doesn't eat seafood so we always orders the burger with white cheddar and bacon, and says it's the best burger he's ever had. I of course, had to go with the Fishwives Stew. It was as fabulous as ever, with huge pieces of fish and crab and plenty of clams. The bread chunks included are to die for. Our server was kind enough to offer that the kitchen could crack the crab for us, saving a hassle for my two young kids, and saving me the mess. A true game changer! This is definitely one to go to when you are in Newport. The servers are always friendly and spot on. They have staff that have been there for a long time and know the menu very well. The side salad with shrimp was filling and very yummy. The dressing is always nice and fresh and the citrus really comes through. We drove to Newport from Eugene to eat at Local Ocean. It was well worth the trip! We had excellent wine reasonably priced for happy hour. We ordered the Brazilian Stew with a small house frieze salad (it was not small, we shared) with an incredible louis dressing. Also house made focaccia bread garlic toast. The stew had more delectable, tender shrimp, rockfish, scallops and Dungeness crab than stew broth. The proper milk broth also had oyster mushrooms, red pepper and white onion slices. The dessert was a salt chocolate ganache like pudding with blueberries and macerated strawberries AND house made whipped cream! I loved my entire experience including a lovely upper dining room view of the Yaquina bridge and bay. Our server was very nice and informative. Probably one of the best meals I have ever had. We visited on a Wednesday night in October and this place was still busy. Luckily we got seats at the bar. The bartender was very friendly and offered great suggestions. We had the crostini appetizer. It was so flavorful I could have eaten a dozen of them. I didn't want them to stop. Alas one was enough, because my fish stew seemed to be a never ending bowl of seafood. I got the Fishwives stew. At first glance I didn't think it would be enough food, but ever bite was filled with delicious seafood, which seemed to go on forever - Dungeness crab in the shell, Oregon pink shrimp, wild prawns, scallops, clams, and rockfish. The broth was perfect and came with garlic bread to sop up every last bit. My husband ordered the fall harvest special Black Cod and he raved about it. Desserts sounded good, but we were stuffed. Don't be discouraged by the pork belly-- you can't even taste it. The chowder is perfectly balanced. The crab cakes are the best I've ever tasted- they have fresh local crab! The lingcod fish and chips was lightly breaded, served with a zesty slaw and perfectly cooked fries. The local Jaquina Bay oysters were a star. The deviled eggs are brightly colored with turmeric and beet, and are an absolute delight. If you stop by-- definitely have their crab cakes and chowder. Don't miss it! My wife and I stayed overnight in Newport for an anniversary weekend. We hadn't made dinner reservations and started to call around in the late afternoon--nothing available at the top three restaurants we tried for when we wanted. We did put in our name with the host at the restaurant in case anything opened up. We were delighted to get a text about 40 minutes later that a table was available. Folks, you should RUN to this place. The ambiance was great--sitting at a lovely table upstairs and able to see the harbor at night. The FOOD was exquisite. My wife ordered a salmon salad, that came with a nice (not overly large, but appropriately sized) portion of salmon that was well prepared and seasoned. After a number questions of our server, I opted for a dinner salad accompanied by the two-skewer portion of tuna. The skewers were served over rice noodles and a creatively designed vegetable medley and a spicy Asian sauce, which reminded me a bit of a General Tso sauce--but was clearly done in the kitchen. Both the tuna dish and the salad were quite flavorful in their own way, with extremely fresh ingredients and varied and intentional textures which both complemented and contrasted with one another. For dessert we ordered the avocado-chocolate mousse tart, which amazingly was gluten free and had a date/hazelnut crust base. It, too was outstanding. Our sever was attentive but not overly so. When he returned to our table a few times to check on us we had a bit of banter around recipes, flavor profiles and the like. We never had to ask for more water and our server offered more hot water for the tea we were drinking without our prompting. The entire meal with drinks, dinner and dessert came to around $65, which was a steal. We are grateful to have found a new favorite place for a nice meal when we come to Newport. I've been waiting to have this stew for six months and it lived up to my expectations in every way. It is the perfect mix of seafood with shrimp, crab, clams, and some fish in it. Our server was extremely welcoming, friendly and courteous! The upstairs view of the bay was great, especially for our out-of-town guest. These are the positive comments. The protein on each of our 3 dishes was cold. Are these dishes not placed under heating lamps? My husband had tempeh skewers, which seemed to be cooked properly, but they were stone cold. Our guest had the black cod which was also properly cooked but cool. His rice was flat out cold. My tuna dish was seared well, but came too cool. The broccolini tips were cooked well, but the stems were too tough to even cut. Within about 15 minutes, I had stomach cramps and then diarrhea for the rest of the day. Our friends had recently eaten at LO and had a very similar experience. I'm sad to say, that after having loved LO for 10 years, we will no longer bring our guests or come here ourselves. HAPPY HOUR - Monday through Friday, 3PM - 5 PM (Only in the upstairs bar, somewhat limited seats). It was very hard to find Happy Hour info before coming here, I attached the HR menu picture. A little more fancy / upscale than other places in the area, but I enjoyed the food here (both Rockfish and Lingcod fish & chips). If on a budget, I'd suggest the Rockfish Fish & Chips ($17.50), if not, then the Lingcod at $24 might be better, but I still thought Rockfish was great. Save the money and get a beer for the difference (as of July 2025, they have one on my FAVORITE IPAs on deck... Von Ebert Brewing "Dynamic Essence" made with Terpenes!). Coleslaw that came with the fish & chips wasn't sweet and made with dill, something I really enjoyed. Fish itself isn't your "pub style" deep fried type, I really liked it honestly. Just wish the "chips" aka fries came with a little bigger portion. Parking lot & street parking can be packed; I was able to park further down the street (past the marina) and just walk down. read more

This is a hard review to write. My wife, and I, have been dining at Local Ocean since they opened, a couple of decades now, well before the upstairs dining room was built. Over the years, the food has been, mostly, very good, with several bumps in the road leading to mediocre dinners. Of course there have been large changes, as all restaurants are in a challenging environment. Today's Local Ocean, for better or worse, is quite different than it was when it opened. Our most recent meal was a complete disappointment however, and we will not be returning. My wife ordered the Moqueca (Brazilian fish stew). It was very fishy smelling and tasting, acrid and very unbalanced in flavor. I tried it as well and was shocked that they would put food of this quality out to guests. My sandwich a riff on a fish club sandwich, was fair but lacked in both flavor and texture. We were asked by a representative there why we did not send the stew back. It's quite simple really, one of the primary things that one pays for in a restaurant that has higher aspirations is consistency. And this is where Local Ocean has always struggled. Customers should not be a part of the quality control of a better restaurant. Service, which is usually spot on was glacial that evening. This was a surprise. I have always been in favor of the flat gratuity that they charge. It evenly distributes the cost. But now that service was not to par, I rethought it a bit. There is no way to financially communicate displeasure with service. And really, maybe there shouldn't be. I think that responsibility should rest with management and a review probably puts the onus on those that it should. Let's end on some positives. The view from upstairs is magical, and the drinks are beautifully crafted. We will miss that view, and past glories. The basics of a fantastic restaurant are there. So, apparently, I was a new Yelper, started a review, but never finished. My total loss. Because this place got so popular, we could not get a dinner reservations,so we chose lunch. It did not disappoint. We got there at opening and by the time we left, the place was full. Caveat: this restaurant boasts locally sourced products, so peaches are in season. For an appetizer we had the blackcod tartare with pickled peaches. It was incredibly good! I am a Reuben fan and so I had to try the Tuna Reuben. Let me tell you, you can make fish into a reuben. I had no idea that you could brine tuna, and make it into a Reuben and make it so realistic, the only difference was texture, but it was so good! For the main dish, my partner got the grilled halibut with peaches. The dish was so rediculously light, it was phenomenal. This is one of the best restaurants in Oregon.
