One of the BEST restaurants we have gone to! The fish and chips were nice and not heavy or greasy. I liked having the option of what type of fish you can get. Good crunch on the breading. The soup is well seasoned and had a hearty amount of meat, paired well with the cheesy base. The tuna skewers were PERFECTION, they were the perfect balance of fat, acidity, and herbaceous-ness. We also tried the fish tacos which come loaded with fish and nice accompaniments. The waitstaff are friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We really felt taken care of there. Oh my. OH MY! This is my new favorite restaurant in the entire world. Fresh oysters were outstanding. The clam chowder is amazing. I would fight someone twice my size for another bowl. Made lunch reservations at 12 to celebrate my husband's birthday. We arrived on time, but had to wait about 5 minutes for them to set the table up. Luckily the manager showed up at the podium before we were seated and moved us to a window table. They weren't very busy, so not sure why they didn't have us in the window to begin with since I did indicate a birthday celebration in my reservation. Unfortunately, when they moved us to the table, they forgot to move the birthday celebration placard, so our server had no idea. I had to ask him if they do anything for birthdays when he asked if we wanted dessert. A little awkward, but at least my husband got a special birthday dessert with a candle. If everything would have ran more smoothly, it would have been a 5 star visit. Our only other issue is the automatic 20% 'service charge'. I used it as the tip; however, other restaurants in the Portland/Vancouver area who list this on their menus have a 3% charge. 20% seems pretty high for customers to help pay employee wages and benefits. I don't feel that's a customer's responsibility, but more an employers obligation. The wording does rub me wrong, but they do have signage at the front podium, placards in the bill book, and the servers were going out of their way to mention it to customers when they gave them the bill. I think it would be better to just raise prices or just call it an automatic 20% gratuity. Just my two cents. We ordered the seasonal No Quarter cocktail. My husband loved it! He also had an oyster shooter. He said it tasted very fresh. For entrees we ordered the lingcod fish & chips, and the crab & pink shrimp louie salad. My husband loved his salad! He said the seafood was fresh. My lingcod was okay. I didn't really care for the breading and prefer smaller pieces I can pick up to dip in the tartar sauce. The fillet kept falling apart. I didn't care for the fennel in the coleslaw either. It was too overpowering. My husband enjoyed it though. The fries were cooked perfectly and not too greasy. My husband enjoyed his strawberry rhubarb parfait for his complimentary birthday dessert. I ordered the chocolate pot de crema and it was absolutely delicious! Great views of the historic Yaquina bay while seated on 1 of 2 levels. My wife and I love it all! Our favorite delish dish is Grilled Hoisin Blackcod (super omega 3) with asparagus, green beans, oranges, shiitake mushroom, onion, red bell pepper, yakisoba noodles and sesame seeds. So scrumptious blackcod brandade special of the day with cured blackcod, Kennebeck potato, olive oil, sour cream, confit garlic, sharp white cheddar - baked gratin style with soubise sauce of spring onion and cream butter - wow! Asparagus side dish prepared with a pefect crunch not over cooked. The "Best" anywhere Dungeness crab cake you'll bite. Oh, canned hook and line caught albacore tuna to go. We had an absolutely incredible collection of thoughtful seafood dishes at Local Ocean. This is the place to savor unique pairings and try new things, unrushed, unafraid. This is not the place for a quick, inexpensive meal. We sat downstairs, overlooking both the kitchen and fishing boats in the port, both of which kept us entertained. Our personal menu included, a collection of cocktails (unique, delightful), grilled oysters (green garlic, miso, lemon), urchin / uni (new for us!), smoked salmon deviled eggs, cioppino fish stew, halibut and peaches, chocolate mousse tart. Grilled oysters and urchin were from the resident chef's menu, the whole of which sounded amazing. My favorite bite was a grilled oyster, my partner's favorite bite was buttered bread dipped in cioppino broth. Everything tasted spectacular. The only dish I was less enthused by was the price of a smoked salmon deviled egg ($3.50 for a half egg feels crazy, although in this economy, I kind of get it). We shared everything, which was more than enough to feed two normal-level-hungry adults. We had been mountain biking all day, so naturally cleaned our plates. Joaquin took great care of us, and all waitstaff were attentive with water service. Water glasses were never empty. This is often lacking in restaurants, and I was especially impressed with the team at Local Ocean that I wanted to point it out. This place has been up dated over the years, making the most of the location near the docks where the fish comes in fresh. All fish is currently fresh! I'm GF, not a problem problem. This is the spot that everyone recommends for dinner in Newport. We rolled up early on a rainy Saturday night and were told it would be a 45 minute wait. Thankfully it was about 20 minutes or so, time to go say hi to the sea lions and then come back to a table. We were seated upstairs, but not near the window. The rockfish decor is stylish and fun, I really liked the aesthetic and ambience. The service was wonderful! My water glass was never empty and our server was incredibly warm and friendly. We started with the Roasted Garlic and Dungeness Crab Soup, which was full of cheese and big chunks of crab meat. The flavor was garlic forward, but still well balanced. It was served with a couple of pieces of soft focaccia, a lovely touch. We also had their House Salad and were pleasantly surprised. It had mixed greens, tomato, cucumber, and parmesan with a Dijon vinaigrette. It was fresh and delicious, would recommend! My husband had the Grilled Hoisin Black Cod which he enjoyed. It was a flavorful veggie filled yakisoba dish. My daughter had the fish tacos, which she enjoyed. I went with the crab cakes and fries. I'm a bit picky about my crab cakes, but these were pretty good. I do wish that they had a bit of a more golden crust and were warmer. We decided to get dessert too, since the meal was so good. We went with their homemade ice cream of the day which was strawberry coconut. I liked the the flavor, but the texture was a little icy. We also got the Fruit Parfait, which was a delight. The fruit was fresh and flavorful and the lemon shortbread cookie crumbles and berry coulis brought some extra brightness. It was a nice light and sweet way to end the meal, highly recommend. Nate 2026 Newport, Oregon Came here based on recommendations from somebody in Bend, Oregon, and a local. I will start by saying I was not impressed. We had a reservation and they took us in a few minutes early and sat us upstairs. We sat near the window that overlooks the harbor and could see it from our table. Very pretty. There is a bar area and other tables that are away from the window that don't have the same view. When we were approached by the waitress, she informed us that they were out of Dungeness crab. Our reservation was at 6:15 PM. Seems a bit odd that a town known for Dungeness crab and the restaurant doesn't have it during peak dinner hours. My husband ordered a cup of clam chowder, and I ordered a cup of the Dungeness crab soup. I loved the creaminess of my soup. However, it was not served hot. Also, there were so many shells in my soup that every bite I had to remove one from my mouth. I do believe that the roux sauce had too much flour and was not mixed well. The clam chowder was not creamy, but had a good flavor. Chunks of carrot and celery. Both soups were served with a portion of bread. The bread was good. We shared the salmon dish. We asked our waitress if we could have the peas on the side as my husband has an allergy to peas. She was quick to tell me that there would be no substitutions. I informed her I was merely asking for the peas to put on a separate dish when brought to the table. She said that she would need to clear it with the kitchen first. Apparently, they approved, as the peas were served on the side. We did enjoy the salmon. It is cooked, medium rare. However, the middle of the salmon fillet was more rare. The buttery sauce was delicious and the asparagus was cooked very well. The mushrooms were delicious. The restaurant is very casual. The outside is not much to look at. The service was fine, but not exceptional. The food was good, but my expectations were so much higher for all of the accolades I had heard prior to dining. They add an automatic tip of 20% to every tab. Then on the bill, they politely ask for an additional gratuity. Everything was outstanding from the ambience to the service to the food. It was a beautiful day and the sliding windows/doors were open to the salty sea air. What a treat! The Sea Platter included geoduck clams, red abalone, uni (sea urchin), butter clams, oysters and gooseneck barnacles. You have to get over the appearance, which I found visually similar to an ancient reptile toe, of the barnacles, but they were tasty. Hubby and I shared the Razor Clam Chowder and the Roasted Garlic and Dungeness Crab Soups. OMG they were to die for, especially the crab soup. I had the Moqueca De Peixe (Brazilian Stew) with rockfish, scallops, wild prawns, Dungeness crab, mushroom, red bell pepper, tomato, onion, green curry-coconut milk broth, and cilantro. Hubby had the Wild Chinook Salmon which was pan-roasted skin-on medium-rare , with summer squash, corn, maitake mushrooms, Romano beans, and a beurre monte. We placed our order for the scallops, crab cakes and the wild salmon. The scallops were delicious! I could eat another order by myself. My husband ordered the wild chinook salmon and said it was okay. The crab cakes were okay as well. For some reason, it was a bit too mushy for my taste. But the French fries were on point. The Kindly Ones was a mojito type refreshing cocktail and the Bloody Mary had a great kick. We started with the roasted garlic crab soup. This was amazing and rich. The soup was very creamy with a substantial amount of fresh crab meat and cheese in the middle of it. The bread served with it was fresh and not to be missed when dipped in the soup. We split the Fish Tacos al pastor. Plenty of delicious fish and a variety of flavors brought these to life. I would order this again (and the soup). Service was great as well. Every local we spoke with had something positive to say about local oceans, we had to try. We should have checked in then walked the boardwalk, rookie mistake. It wasn't the longest wait, and somewhat disappointing to be in the very back with no view after a 30 minute wait. Wait staff very intended on giving you the best fine dining experience I've had in Oregon. What I mean is she checked no less then five times (from a distance) to see if I had made my decisions on my dinner. The menu was incredible, everything sounded fantastic. The sustainability is fantastic extra bonus. My mixed drinks were well mixed, my first one perfectly balanced and nuanced. My second a little heavy in pulp and bartender did ask me and I thought the first drink it was fine but once I got to the middle it was cloying sweet. My bad not the bartender should have scrutinized it closer. What absolutely sealed the deal was my halibut with peaches. The spice of the pepper and the cut of the burrata was impeccable. My dining partner winced at prices but I felt due to economic times and being sustainable it was well worth the coin. Local Ocean used to be our spot when we lived in Corvallis! Since moving to the PDX suburbs, we hadn't visited in 3+ years. We were able to go this past week and it was as good as we remembered it! We went for lunch on a weekday and were promptly seated. My husband doesn't eat seafood so we always orders the burger with white cheddar and bacon, and says it's the best burger he's ever had. I of course, had to go with the Fishwives Stew. It was as fabulous as ever, with huge pieces of fish and crab and plenty of clams. The bread chunks included are to die for. Our server was kind enough to offer that the kitchen could crack the crab for us, saving a hassle for my two young kids, and saving me the mess. A true game changer! We enjoyed a fantastic dinner (October 2025) when we walked in for a late dinner. The menu has a lot of variety, including several varieties of seafood that are not readily available in the middle of the country. Our server was very attentive and accommodating, letting me swap out my wife's drink when she saw she wasn't enjoying it. Presentation of our dishes was very well done, and taste was exceptional. We're out of towners and Local Ocean was recommended to us for our first visit to Newport in 2024. We made a reservation in 2024 and subsequently made reservations to come the following two nights, 2025 we made reservations for both nights we were staying in Newport, 2026 reservations for last night and that concludes our obsession with Local Ocean. When my husband and I walked in last night to the restaurant and were seated upstairs, we each gave each other other quizzical look? Something's different... First question out of our waiter's mouth was are you ready to order? We were able to back it up and ask for a cocktail first. My margarita was fantastic, the perfect Manhattan was diluted. We ordered the blackcod off the specials, room temperature and a grainy consistency. Half a dozen oysters, only two out of the three oysters were identified. We got the roasted lingcod it was pretty darn good with a tasty citrusy broth and the pasta special with calamari, which was light on flavor. We were able to catch our waiter's eye to get the dessert menu before he brought us our check. What did see a couple of waitstaff from our previous visits, but ended up with somebody that we hadn't had before. A little looking on the Internet shows that they have had a change in ownership/management. You can tell. Where I once thought the food and service at Local Ocean was pretty special, I think it now just falls into the regular good seafood restaurant category. We will not go out of our way to come back. We drove to Newport from Eugene to eat at Local Ocean. It was well worth the trip! We had excellent wine reasonably priced for happy hour. We ordered the Brazilian Stew with a small house frieze salad (it was not small, we shared) with an incredible louis dressing. Also house made focaccia bread garlic toast. The stew had more delectable, tender shrimp, rockfish, scallops and Dungeness crab than stew broth. The proper milk broth also had oyster mushrooms, red pepper and white onion slices. The dessert was a salt chocolate ganache like pudding with blueberries and macerated strawberries AND house made whipped cream! I loved my entire experience including a lovely upper dining room view of the Yaquina bridge and bay. Our server was very nice and informative. We had the halibut and peaches-it was very unique with crazy burst of flavors, unexpected but fantastic! Oysters were great and cocktail 'busy earnin' was delish.
