Excellent sushi place! I have always had very good experiences at Kamehachi. The servers are always happy and energetic. The hosts are very sweet and always smiling. I feel very welcomed when I come in! The ambiance is a little romantic, while also very welcoming to families. Sometimes it is loud, but there are always places you can sit in the restaurant where you feel comfortable. The food is top notch! Whenever I come in, I like to order the spicy edamame and the shrimp tempura to start off. The flavor of the edamame is perfect for the spicy lovers! Also, the shrimp tempura is always cooked to perfection. It comes with a couple pieces of shrimp and assorted vegetables. For the main course, I recommend three different things! First, the Bento Box. If you are coming with a big appetite, this dish is for you! I enjoy the Bento Box because it gives you a taste of Kamehachi. It comes with Kyuri Su, which is sliced cucumber with rice vinegar dressing. It has a perfect about of vinegar and it is not overloaded. Also, it comes with chicken, beef, or salmon teriyaki, the assorted tempura, a California roll, rice, and miso soup! The teriyaki is quality, not matter what you choose. My husband enjoys the beef teriyaki the most, although he also loves the flavors of the salmon teriyaki! I enjoy the chicken, although I am vegetarian now, it has a great taste and your tastebuds will thank you! Of course, the California roll is fantastic too! Another dish I love is the Summer roll! It contains tuna, yellowtail, jalapeño, avocado, masago, cilantro, spicy mayo, sesame chili oil, and lime. It is a little on the spicier side, considering it contains many spicy products. All the flavors from each component works very well and I always see many people ordering it when I am there! Additionally, if you are looking for something quick and yummy, I suggest getting a poke bowl. They are considerably new to the menu. You can either build your own from the many options or you can order one from the menu. You can get a small or large, the small is perfect for one if you are not very hungry. Lastly, to close off your dinner or lunch, the mochi is great. There are different flavors like strawberry, chocolate, and more. The chocolate is great! I 100% recommend ordering some mochi to give you the full Kamehachi experience! Overall, Kamehachi is a quality sushi restaurant, especially for the suburbs. The Quest for sushi with a $50 Groupon: We arrived at 5 pm to a 1/4-filled restaurant. Before we can say we had a reservation, we were seated at a table for two by the window. A few seconds later, the hot towels and some seaweed arrived. The mostly courteous staff let us look over the menu while my fiance and I tried to figure out what to use with our $25 each. After quite a bit of time contemplating what tasty morsel to partake, the waiter came by and took our order. I ordered the Combination dinner and a tuna roll. My raw fish-fearing fiance ordered the pork katsu, gyoza, and a single tamago. Our first course, miso soup, came out shortly after. The soup was ok, but lacked tofu. The rest of our meal came out soon afterwards. The busboys seemed to be having a contest on who could pick up plates the fastest. The second we were done with a course or even using a napkin, they would come at warp speed and take our dishes aways. This gave a feeling of being somewhat rushed. They also kept on refilling our waterglasses every 10 minutes. The food itself was great. There was a lot of it. My tempura was a little greasy and the sushi rolls seemed a little on the small end. My fiance ended up taking home a lot of his pork katsu. We were quite stuffed afterwards when our waitress came out and told us we had $1 left and we had to use it. The whole, now half-full, restaurant must of heard us grown. We had to get dessert. We decided on mochi because it was the smallest thing possible. The mochi was nothing special. I am totally a sushi snob and have my list of favorite locations. Kamechachi while not perfect is pretty good for a quick lunch which is important to me as I work nearby. Today I had edamame - solid but how can you get that wrong!?!? They do add the chunky salt pieces on top which are unique and add a little extra salty crunch. I also had the lunch special sashimi salad over greens. I love this salad and it's my go to lunch order. Fresh sashimi includes tuna, salmon and hamachi with tobiko. Generous portions of fish and I highly recommend the spicy sauce in place of salad dressing. Service is attentive and fast. And it's never really just at lunch so you can ensure that you will be in and out quickly. read more

I love sushi and I tried almost all Sushi places in the north west suburbs of Chicago. I was disappointed with sushi this time. I ordered Dragon roll where eel pieces were so small that I didn't feel the taste at all, only dry tempura. For this price you can find much better Dragon roll somewhere else. Rice was cold and too firm. Our server Mike didn't care much about our ten person table. I had to ask for green tea refill twice and when he did that he spoiled the tea over the table dropping in to soy sos. He didn't even care that the table is all wet. The washroom is disgusting, dirty and there was no hands paper towel, I can image what they have in the kitchen. Overall the sushi here is way overpriced. I've read the other reviews and their is a reason why the place is never more than half full....it ain't the greatest sushi in town. I've never had a bad time here, and I've never had a bad meal either. I've just never had anything outstanding at Kamahachi....except for the dragon roll that's surrounded by avocado goodness. Right in downtown Northbrook so parking is easy and I've never seen it more than half full. The interior is clean and quite nice - panels divide the room into different sections without making you feel closed off from the rest of the restaurant and the lighting "pools" around the tables giving a greater sense of space. Service is also excellent - quick, knowledgeable and attentive without being intrusive. So why only 3 stars? To be fair, I'd give them 3.5 stars if I could. But I can't give it 4 stars because the sushi is just OK. I've never had bad sushi from Kamehachi (the dreaded "bait taste") but their sushi just isn't as wonderfully flavorful as other restaurants I've been to. Not to be mean, but I've had OK sushi from the grocery store that tasted on par with Kamehachi. So when I want some good sushi, I usually opt for Sushi Kushi instead. read more

I had what I call "the staples" when I had dinner at Kamehachi - a sushi platter and cha soba (green tea noodles with dipping sauce) - food that really don't leave much room for error unless they use substandard sushi rice and it all falls apart or screws up rolling the noodles. Being my staples though, I'd say the cha soba was pretty good, and the sushi well prepared. We had the shrimp and vegetable tempura and agedashi tofu for appetizers. Again, dishes that a professional chef can't really screw up. (Dip in batter and fry, for crying out loud.) My friend had the gindara which she said tasted really fresh, the flesh being firm and all that. The ambiance was quiet enough to carry good conversation, but not so that you can hear the conversation two tables down without consciously eavesdropping. It's not as easy on the pocket (what good Japanese restaurant is?), but it's not gregariously overpriced either for the quality and portions. read more

meh really does sum it all up best. Its okay sushi, nothing really spectacular and certainly edible, but its pretty darn expensive for just meh sushi. I ordered up a variety of sushi and sashimi for a friend and I as he was in town. We got delivery from them and it took a bit as they are further away then wilmette, but no big deal. I got a sushi and sashimi platter that had a variety of tuna, salmon, whitefish and shrimp. The salmon and the tuna were good, but the whitefish and shrimp were pretty forgettable. I also got 3 pieces of salmon sushi and 3 pieces of flounder. Again, the salmon was good and was the fastest to go, but the flounder was a bit tough. The delivery got here right around the time that they said it would and they were very easy to deal with on the phone. The only real problems are that the prices are expensive and that its okay sushi. I think i'd rather find some other places that may offer up some better sushi the next time I'm getting the crave and I'm stuck in the burbs read more

NO NO NO is all I have to say. If you are in the north shore area and going here for sushi you are making a mistake. For one its always ALWAYS empty which should just tell you its the wrong place to begin with. try Fujiyama its a hole in the wall type sushi place with the freshest fish in northbrook. read more

Friendly staff and hamachi was fresh. Wasn't expertly cut but fresh. The rice that came with the hamachi don was cold and hard. Official entrance at the back of the building but if you walk in the front, it's fine. May return and try their ramen as that's hard to find in the suburbs. read more

I dined her as well as had it at a catered event and was not blown-away. The restaurant decor was really nice and clean. It was a bit loud, but the staff was very knowledgeable. We were here for a graduation dinner and the chef prepared a very unusual dish, that to this day I still don't know what I tried. The effort was great, but I was not a fan of the dish. I thought it was a bit pricey as well. I had several varieties of rolls at the catered event and tho fresh and tasty, I thought there was more rice than filling. Northbrook location: We've been to a countless number of sushi places over the years and have a good idea of what quality should be expected. We would rate Kamehachi as a high B. It's not too glamorous and every single item on the menu isn't perfect but on average, they are very good. Ordered take out many, many times and never a mistake. Ate in a half dozen times, always had very nice service, no matter where we sat, the day of the week or if just simply last minute dinner with kids. Had chicken katsu bento & would have preferred to have with side of rice vs the rolls but no substitutions allowed. Roll pieces were a bit much to have in one bite ...was taking rice off the rolls and eating my katsu with that ...and tuna... did not taste so fresh. The katsu itself and salad were really good. I would not say it was awful, but considering the price, it was real bad. I would say, it was edible, I ate it all. but I was expecting WAY better. If I did not know it was $22 for 2 rolls, and I tastedi t, I would have said it was a really good supermarket sushi. I have seen the chefs at the restaurant and I dont mean to be disrespectful but it really felt like those industrial sushi in a little better. Everyone here was very nice and the food was decent. My problems with the restaurant was the seasoning. Although the fish was fresh enough (some pieces were a little suspicious - but nothing horrible) the rice was under seasoned and lacking. When we went they were having a $5 dollar off special on any of the special rolls. We got the Mayflower and the double spider rolls. The difference in flavor was hardly noticeable and I could have sworn I get the same rolls. Just unfavorable. All in all, the dining experience was uninspiring. All the entrees looks decent enough and if forced to come here in the future I may consider that instead. As good as it gets in the 'burbs! Great friendly service and fresh sushi and noodles. Lovely restaurant inside. Good for kids because the restaurant is spacious, they have a kids' menu (not that you have to order off of it because there are plenty of other options), and they have lots of little details to look at including the artwork and the sushi chefs. Good ice cream for dessert. Reasonably priced. :( The only weird thing was the bathroom smell when you walk in. Not sure if it's the cleaning products or what. Best food like this in the area! Love coming here and the food is fantastic. They have a beautiful tent set up outside and we had a wonderful night. We love the rock shrimp, asparagus and beef rolls, pork gyoza and spicy salmon and tuna sushi. Soooo good. Also Titina (who I believe was our server bc her name was at the bottom of our receipt) was a wonderful server!!! I really like the sushi rolls from here. I have ordered a few times now for delivery. There's sushi is very fresh and tasty! My favorite is the dragon roll. The best thing is that you can substitute brown rice for the white rice on the rolls for a healthy option. I will be ordering again and go in person soon too! read more

What impresses me so much about Kamehachi--city and suburbs--is their consistent excellence. I have been to the two restaurants at least 10 times over the past 7 years and I have never had a bad meal. Everything is fresh and prepared with care. We probably go to this place the most after Akai Hana. My mother-in-law really loves their seaweed pre-course. It's very tasty. Their parking is very good, the only thing I miss is their Japanese garden and koi pond. If you want some sushi and you're in downtown Northbrook, give this place a try. read more

Pretty good food and I really like the restaurant everything is new and comparable. It is a strange lay out the front of the restaurant is actually the back they have it in reverse creating confusion. The chicken wing appetizer was really big it didn't appear Japanese style. Kamehachi half full? I can't imagine when that would ever happen. It has always been packed when I have been here. I LOVE their seaweed salad that is placed at everyone's table when you are sat. The fact that I am usually the only one in the party that eats also bodes well for me. I have never actually had their sushi, but their regular Japanese entrees are very good. My last time there I had the Salmon Teriyaki. They also have tasty Miso soup, a good salad and the shumai and pot stickers are a good option for apps. A good place for a casual and reasonable date, or for carry out for a night in. Northbrook is becoming a very good restaurant town. read more
