We visited Tokyo Garden on a Friday evening, about 5pm. Party of 5. I felt like the food was "okay" but nothing to write home about. We ordered a variety of appetizers, sushi rolls, and stir fry's. It was surprisingly pricey, but I'm told that they're comparable to other sushi places. As someone that doesn't frequent sushi restaurants, I felt like the amount of food didn't really match the prices. The main reason for removing stars was the service was lacking. We waited for over an hour before any food (we even ordered apps) hit the table. The waitress wasn't on top of keeping drinks full, or even making sure we have silverware or napkins. First and last time I will be coming here. I placed a specific order over the phone, but when I picked it up, several ingredients were missing. To make matters worse, the rolls were extremely dry and not enjoyable to eat at all--my kids ended up throwing them away. I called to let them know the order was incorrect, and at first they apologized and offered us a credit. I appreciated that and thought they were making it right. However, just a few minutes later, they called back and said they could no longer honor the credit and would only remake the order if we paid again. I'm honestly disappointed that they would rather lose a customer than stand behind their mistake. We've passed this place many times before, and a while back, we even found it on Yelp listed as a Chinese restaurant nearby. For some reason, we never stopped in--until now. While they're fine, they tend to fall into the "meh" category--edible, but nothing to rave about. Nothing, that is, until you compare them to Tokyo Garden. Sure, you can swing by Panda Express if you're just after a quick fix, but when you want a sit-down restaurant that consistently serves food a notch above the rest, Tokyo Garden should be at the top of your list. From the moment we walked in, the place gave off a warm, welcoming environment. The décor on the walls was tasteful, the tables were covered with colorful floral designs, and the atmosphere felt both inviting and relaxed. Our waitress greeted us quickly, took our drink orders, and even brought us water while we waited--a small gesture, but one that shows thoughtfulness. Not long after, my Arnold Palmer arrived alongside my wife's Pepsi. As we browsed the menu, we landed on the Food Box Number 3, which came with Teriyaki Chicken, Miso Soup, a fresh salad, three pieces of sushi, white rice (brown rice available for just $2 more), and fried vegetables with Tempura Shrimp. But before committing to the main course, we couldn't resist starting with an appetizer--Crab Rangoons. Let me tell you, we've sampled Crab Rangoons from plenty of places, but Tokyo Garden's were next level. The exterior was perfectly crispy, the filling had that distinct, real crab flavor (not just cream cheese), and the balance of flavors was spot on. Paired with their Sweet and Sour Sauce, it was the kind of appetizer that makes you want to order another round before the main meal even arrives. Then came the main event. The Chicken Teriyaki was tender and flavorful--yes, a touch on the salty side, but still addictive. The salad was fresh and bright, with a ginger dressing that tied it all together. The Tempura Shrimp had that perfect crunch without being greasy, and the fried vegetables were just right--soft on the inside, crisp on the outside. The sushi was fresh and simple, a nice touch that rounded out the plate. From start to finish, the entire experience felt like a win. The staff was attentive without being overbearing, the food was consistently good, and the price was fair enough that you don't walk out feeling like you overpaid for mediocre food. Finally--we feel like that we have finally found a Chinese restaurant we can actually get excited about. One that: 1: Doesn't break the bank. 2: Doesn't leave you wishing you'd gone somewhere else. So, if you're tired of rolling the dice on new places only to walk away disappointed, do yourself a favor--go to Tokyo Garden. Tokyo Garden has been a family favorite for as long as I can remember. The service and food quality have remained consistently excellent for decades. Prices are fair, portions are standard, and the ambiance is clean and pleasant. The layout is also spacious and provides some breathing room. The staff are always kind and welcoming. Even though many of the servers are younger, they're consistently professional and bring great energy to the dining experience. If you haven't tried Tokyo Garden yet, please do! We arrived shortly after 4pm today thinking we would have plenty of time to get to a 5:30pm game at Simpson University. When we arrived we were the only table seated in the other room. After ordering 10 minutes later the waitress tells us that you're out of Sesame Chicken and sold the last one an hour. The waitress didn't know that when we placed our order? How do you run out of Sesame chicken? I ordered chicken teriyaki sushi on the regular menu and they looked like appetizers, barely had any rice. They were sooo tiny! Have been coming here for years. Last visit food was bad. Sushi rolls dont look anything like pictures. Rice is weird and loose. Rolls got massive and fall apart now and drenched in sauce. Make them right and they'd be cheaper and delicious. Then we'd order more, or come back at all at this point. Maybe new ownership? Send cooks to sushi class. read more

Unfortunately the prices have greatly increased and the flavor has decreased. We have tried a few times and it hasn't changed. Even the condiment prices go up every times we order. The reviews about the long wait time are accurate. We placed our order online. We arrived to pick up 30 minutes later and were told that our food is not ready. We waited an additional 30 minutes - a total of an hour - for our food. The food was mediocre to bad. The sushi and sashimi tasted fine. The hot items that we ordered were in line with food court take out. The portions are really meager for the price. It's not like this place in Redding is located in a major city where you expect to pay a lot for small plates of food. The food prep guys decided to drench our salad with dressing, making it inedible. They placed our sashimi on what seemed like half a head of iceberg lettuce to give the optics of more food. Going back to my earlier complaint, they give you small portions. You're better off going to a grocery store to pick up the ready to eat sushi than going to this place. read more

Refund would have been better. It wouldn't have been so bad if other people weren't getting their food before us even though they ordered after us. Let me start out with, I've been going to Tokyo Garden for over a decade now. This is one my favorite sushi spots of all time or at least it used to be. I was here visiting from out of town, the only place I've been dying to eat at for almost 2 years has been Tokyo Garden. I went out for dinner with family, and sat at the sushi bar. The guys actually making the sushi are the ONLY reason I would ever consider coming back here. They pay attention to you if you ever need anything. Now to everything else, the service... there was about 6 or 7 waitresses on a Wednesday night. Not a single one of them helped us out or would even look us in the eyes to help us order the other portion we were ordering that was not sushi. We had to ask someone to help us. We ate and tipped our sushi bar servers in cash because they were mainly taking care of us. A waitress took mine and my mothers cards, and then as we stood up the waitress who sat us asked us if we needed a table. EVEN THOUGH SHE SAT US. Then the other waitress who took our cards proceeds to ask us if we needed a table... AS SHE HAS OUR TICKETS AND CARDS IN HER HANDS. They mixed up my mom's ticket before she paid with someone else's and thankfully she noticed before she signed. I paid for my food and even tipped the waitresses $7 as well even though they didn't help us AT ALL. The charge finally updates onto my card the next day and come to find out I was incorrectly charged another $20. I called the restaurant 2 different times and was eventually told the store owner would contact me. This "owner" called me and said she will look into it. Ends up just texting me (which how professional is it to try to fix YOUR mistakes via text message) She sends me a picture asking if this was my receipt, which is a customer copy and has NO PROOF of my signature anywhere. Someone in their restaurant wrote a $20 tip onto my receipt and they took it off my card. I was going back and forth with the owner and she promised me a refund which she STILL HAS NEVER DONE. I loved Tokyo Garden but I will never go here again. Don't pay with card if you don't want their waitresses or maybe even their owner to write an false tip on your card :) They literally stole from me and accused me, asking me for proof, and still won't refund me after I've provided more than enough! :) read more

First off I will start by saying that I am not picky when it comes to food at all! But the food here was seriously not good. Was wanting to try a new place and came here, my boyfriend and I ordered the ramen, miso, crazy monkey, and chicken fried rice. The rice was good and the roll was average. The meat and the egg in the ramen smelt and tasted very expired. It seemed like the waitress that served us knew the ramen wasn't going to be good. And without us asking, took it off of our bill. I am so hoping that our most recent visit was an anomaly. This is a long term staple for my friend and I. We come here 3 to 4 times a year for sushi and to catch up. Up until last night we've not had a problem with food or service. Last night when we placed our order I decided to try something new and got a deep fried roll with salmon & cream cheese. I mentioned to the waitress that it was my first time trying it and she said to let her know if I didn't like it. I also mentioned that it was my friend's birthday and the response was that she would get free ice cream. The waitress came by twice to let us know the food would be right out. 25 minutes later she stopped by to let us know the chef didn't see the order and would be starting on it right away. About 10 minutes later the waitress stopped by to let us know how sorry she was that it was taking so long. She then asked if my friend wanted another beer. The impression we got was this was in compensation for waiting so long. So a 2nd beer was brought and still we waited. The waitress stopped by a bit later to apologize for the s*&t show, as she put it. Apparently the computer had a glitch and none of the orders had been showing up in the kitchen. The food finally came out and I found out why the waitress was hesitant when I ordered that roll. It was pretty inedible. The rice had all shifted to one side and was mushy. I tried three pieces and then told the waitress I couldn't eat it and ordered vegetable tempura & futomaki. A few minutes later the waitress returned to confirm my new order - she was confused and thought I wanted vegetable futomaki. I stressed that it was veggie tempura & regular futomaki and stated that I am highly allergic to shrimp. This was not the first time that the waitress came back to our table to confirm what we had ordered. I'm not sure if the order she wrote down on the pad was legible to her or what, but it didn't give us a confident feeling. A while later the tempura came out - and you guessed it, there was shrimp on the plate. About 10 minutes AFTER I finished the tempura the futomaki showed up. By this point I wasn't really hungry any more and asked for a to go box. The waitress mentioned that she would be giving us a discount. When the bill came there was a 15% discount. There was also a charge for the 2nd beer and the fried roll that I had sent back. My friend confirmed with me that she also got the impression the beer was the restaurant compensating us for the long wait. Now, I can't remember that last time I sent back food in a restaurant for being inedible, so I don't know if it's standard practice to charge for the dish in that situation. In the long run, we were charged $80 (with the discount) for a really uncomfortable dining experience. Oh, and my friend was never offered the free ice cream for it being her birthday. LoL read more

There were 3 young men preparing rolls behind the counter. Wait time for our food was average. Everything in our order looked and tasted great. Overall we were all satisfied. We were shocked. The way this place handle their food is chinese, not japanese! We started our meal with an appetizer of Age-dashi tofu. To our surprise, the dish came in a full plate of tofu in contrast to traditionally six pieces. The crust of the deep fried tofu was very crunchy hard, similiar to a deep fried egg roll in other asian restaurants. The dipping sauce is like a thick oyster sauce with corn starch in contrast of a light soupy bonito flavor dashi sauce. The dish is totally disappointing and not genuine japanese! Came our entree, usually presentation of Japanese bento set dinner is nicely arranged, neat and inviting, but the bento tray my lady received was just slapped together, not appetizing at all. The sushi rice was very bland, absolutely no flavor. Curry dishes in Japanese restaurants are normally known for it's deep rich creamy sauce with it's mild spicy flavor, simmered for hours, but my eyeballs almost dropped out when the seafood curry I ordered arrived. It's absolutely not a Japanese curry dish but identical to a chinese stir fry instead. All ingredients was mixed together, veggies undercooked and crunchy in a sauce, heavily salted, hardly curry flavor, and a bowl of rice was place on the plate rather than neatly set on the same dish with the curry in the japanese tradition. It was spicy but it was not curry. We thought we came to dine in a japanese restaurant but were deceived with chinese food, what a shame! Well, if this review could give O star, I would not hesitate to do so, Will not recommend this place for any viewer looking for Japnese food or sushi in Redding, definitely not coming back for sure! THIRTY-SIX minutes after the order, they still did not have our food. They came by once to say, "it's almost ready!" but it didn't come. Just a theory, but I think their people are doing too much cross-functional stuff. Like the hosts and servers will also be in the kitchen packaging and assembling and maybe even preparing??? Thought of giving them a try after MANY years... I feel really bad for this place. We used to go here all the time and loved it. Tonight we ordered Philadelphia rolls and beef teriyaki to share. The Philadelphia rolls had a sliver of cream cheese, half of what they used to put in them. The beef teriyaki was all fat and we had to spit most of it out. They usually put vegetables in the teriyaki like green beans, brocolli and carrots. Instead they threw the slab of fat beef on lettuce. So, soggy lettuce instead? Looks like they are trying to cut costs like everyone else is I'm sure but this is an unacceptable eptable and I want my money back. read more

Sushi use to be good, but recently ordered a 'Train wreck', not even CLOSE to the quality it use to be. The rice was NOT 'sushi rice', it was like it came straight out of a refrigerator, day old!
