This place is ace, ya little ripper! As a seppo who's hasn't been down under (yet), K&K is fair dinkum from what I can tell. SO and I dropped in for a pint and ended up playing pool with an stonkered Austrian (not Australian) and a pommy bastard who had his wobbly boot on. I say give it a burl because it might become your local billabong. Don't get too off your face because you might either have to blow in the bag or have a liquid laugh later on. I lub this pub! After traveling to Oz and NZ last summer I was ecstatic to see this bar all decked out with soccer and rugby banners, flags and jerseys. I was even happier to spot some Aussie pies on the menu too! The beer list was great, the service was friendly and there was a trivia night I participated in and it was a total blast. Kristin and I came here to use a Groupon that was almost expiring. The space is fun -it's occupying the old Ballard Carnegie library- but the restaurant is loud. Like very loud. Maybe it's better on a weeknight. We shared the wings, meat pie with cheese, and fries with gravy. Yes, we were having a balanced meal. We agreed the food was all just okay. We didn't finish the wings or fries. I thought the meat pie was pretty good and I might order this again. Each of the appetizers was around $6-7 each. They don't offer table service but do bring the food to you when it's ready. You have to order everything at the bar. I'd definitely come back for drinks and maybe something to nibble on. It would be fun to play a game here with a group. You're probably better off getting food during happy hour which goes till 6:30pm. We enjoyed our glasses of Strongbow. read more

For a TWIF twist on Bingo, Kristin and I descended upon Kangaroo & Kiwi for fun and drinks. My memory and her math skills are at odds with just how much I drank...my new found love of a well made Dark & Stormy is going to prove to be dangerous, I think. We chose a table in one of the "side rooms" of this gorgeous old library turned great bar, right by the toasty fireplace. Board games were everywhere (including...Twister??). We went for a round of Scrabble- Words with Friends style. Bartenders were friendly, and as the place was packed still kept up with the orders. During Bingo there were almost no breaks between rounds, so when there was a brief intermission they were inundated with drink orders. No sweat, they rocked it. We didn't go for food, but it was Taco Thursday (screw you Tuesday!) And we saw many orders go by. For $2 they are pretty big tacos. On my list to try. It was a fun night, and one of the only Kristin and I can remember where we got "girl date time" just us! Jorge joined in for Bingo (and bought us drinks! The building this bar resides in used to be a library and has held a prominent space on Market Street in the heart of Ballard for a long time. As soon as you walk in, you have the option to turn left in to a game room, turn right in to a spacious area full of places to sit or hang out, or you can walk straight up to the bar and order a drink. A tough decision to be sure, but since food and drink orders must be placed at the bar, I would head there first and then scope out a good spot to claim. The friendly staff will keep your drinks filled and your area clean which is really all you need from them as the focus here is on having a good time whether you are here to watch a sporting event, participate in one of their famous trivia nights, or just to hang out with some friends. The Happy Hour is definitely a highlight as it goes all the way to 6:30pm making it a perfect spot to hit up if you're running late or as a place to get the night started. My old review was in its previous location. Wow that was a while ago. Now they lurk within the remains of a butchered library. Where once there was study, now there is sloppy foreplay while people drink enough to go through with it. I dropped in for breakfast recently. Had a bloody mary as one does. I must have not been thinking clearly as I ordered some serious bachelor chow called the brekkie burger, which was some kind of bird, I think, in a bun with crunchy cabbage (I think), cheese, egg, and avocado. I ate it, but made a mental note never to come here for anything other than beer ever again. I can do without dishes invented in a hung over fraternity kitchen after puking ones self to sleep. Then again, it might be the national dish of downundahistan. I don't know or care really. I enjoyed my several trips down the piss covered stairs to the outside beer garden to order and collect drinks. Really completed the mental picture for me. Apparently this place has caught the Fremont/Ballard douchepox that has befallen the place like locusts to housing projects, so consider your weekend plans well. read more

So I have a thing about Aussies ever since my *ahem* little fling in Sydney - yes, I love me some down under - and you can throw a few Kiwis on the barbie too, because they are the best people in the world. They really truly are - witty, smart, cultured, and when they talk on their cell phones in public they use their inside voices. Given that, the Kangaroo-Kiwi Pub is just about the best bar in Seattle. We're talking completely unpretentious (first time I was there, I saw Lube Wrestling), loaded with beers you'll find nowhere else (not that I really drink beer, but still), and chock full of adorable accents. They even have meat pies, which like Vegemite, is not for the faint of heart. We didn't come within spitting distance of winning Trivia tonight, but it was a mighty good time just the same. read more

A group of came here for the opening Saturday of World Cup pool play, and it's a good thing we arrived before 7 AM. While the pub was buzzing for the early match, it was overflowing for the USA v. England match, with a healthy showing of God Save the Queen-ers. As packed as this place was, the staff did an amazing job keeping the pints flowing and the tables cleared. We had the breakie pies with beans, and it was delicious and a good base to pour eleventy pints of Guinness on top of. I haven't tried their standard pies, but I understand they are just as amazing. This place draws a great crowd - I'll definitely be back for some Tri-Nations and Six Nations rugby action. And for the 2011 Rugby World Cup! read more

I'm sure this place offers a fun and lively nighttime bar and some decent beer but other than that I can imagine what it is that brings customers here or keeps them coming back. We had a gift card and being in the area decided to give it a try for lunch. We walked in and weren't sure if we should seat ourselves or wait. We stood for a moment and then walked into one of the side rooms to find a table. The first thing I noticed was that it smelled like urine. Next thing I noticed was how dirty the tables (actually entire place) were. We still decided to give it a try. The place was pretty busy so we figured the food must be good. We waited for awhile but seeing no server we got up and went to the bar. Orders should be placed there. We grabbed some menus, which were also very dirty and ordered spicy chook sandwiches. The bartender was in such a rush that she walked away before we finished ordering and told us the price right away. I asked a few questions about drinks but I felt rushed so just went with water and paid. We sat back down and waited for the food. The sandwiches were not unique in any way and lacked in taste. I didn't find anything spicy about them. Overall the food, service and place were just not good. The food left me feeling unwell and seriously disappointed. I am so disappointed! My fiancé and I ordered the fish & chips and wings. There was 2 inches of fish covered in 8 inches of batter and what appeared to be yesterdays fries and the wings of a sparrow. $50 for nothing. I will never order food from them again and neither should you. When I asked for a manager I was directed to a bartender who said there wasn't a manager available. I think the thing I love the most about Kangaroo & Kiwi is the old, re purposed library the establishment calls home. What an awesome way to revive an old Ballard landmark. In these days of sprawl and the epidemic of condominiums that Ballard currently has, it's refreshing and nostalgic to see that there are bits of the old 'llard still sprinkled among the new growth. We came here on a Sunday and it was fairly empty inside, but there were people seated in their outdoor area, which features wooden tables, seats made from barrels, and a cute little garden in the corner. They had many different Aussie beers on tap, as well as a few local favorites. I went with a 21st Amendment while I was there, and we sat outside in the outdoor seating area. The bartender even had an Aussie accent. A very cool space. I'd like to come back in the future to try some more beers and maybe see what they have to offer for food. read more

This place looks very dodgy from the outside, so even though we have lived close by for a while, it was a long time before we actually made a trip over there. Inside - the crowd was great! We went on a Friday night, I would say it was mostly twenty somethings just hanging out with friends. The music was a mix of rap and pop - very enjoyable. Although there was no dancing going on. The announcer was extremely hard to understand, spoke very fast and was not too excited about repeating questions or answering any confusion at the end of each round. Well the only reason I have been here so far has been for pub trivia. At which the Seattle CS trys to make a showing at regularly. Its pretty much standard dive bar fare. Not too much stands out as being Aussie/Kiwi, at least on trivia night. The Quiz master is a Brit, who tends to mispronounce a bit, not sure if thats cause he's normally drunk or if he thinks its funny. I've only had the chicken strips there, as most food is on the expensive side of dive bars for a poor bastard like me(~$8 for a burger). All in all, we normally always have a good time at trivia, and have even managed to win a couple. read more

I've been here numerous times, and I've had a variety of experiences, usually good. Although, the low was getting kicked out because some stupid unfriendly woman couldn't share space properly one busy weekend evening. But no need to go into details. My other gripe would be that there is or was an unfriendly bartender. Haven't seen her in a while, so.... Aside from that, I like this dive bar. If had not had a dart board, I probably wouldn't go as much. The place is typically filled with cool people and it's fairly easy to strike up conversation if you want to mingle. They have a pool table as well for any pool sharks, or the aspiring. One of the other things I like is sometime during the fall or winter,... they have this summer beach party where they fill the whole place with sand and get a few of those kiddie pools and fill them with water, bring out the indoor heaters and it turns out to be good time. I came here for my birthday last weekend and this was the perfect place to take 25+ people. ***DRINKS*** DISCLAIMER: Again, it was my birthday. This is not a typical night for me. WHISKEY & GINGER I got ginger ale instead of ginger beer to save my friend money. Big mistake, haha. It was just a little too sweet for me. But that's nothing on K&K. The bartender had even said their ginger beer's really good, but I got the ale instead. It was only $5 though! TEQUILA SHOT Their shot glasses are huge and they pour more than just 1oz. Daunting, but worth it. LEMON DROP This, surprisingly, was not too sweet. It was delicious and would order this again. LEMON DROP SHOT This was also not too sweet. Would get this again, too. MARGARITA It was on the sweet side, but I would probably get this again. ***FOOD*** CHICKEN CAEASAR SALAD I tried a couple bites of my friend's and it was SO GOOD. The best I've had at any restaurant. They even had bacon bits in it. What? So bomb. And it was also a very generous portion of salad. Very shareable. NACHOS I saw my friend's and it looked goooooood. ***SERVICE*** Knowing that I most likely would not be able to reserve space, I called K&K ~6hrs before coming in (oops!) and figured I'd try anyways and if anything I'd be letting them know I'd be coming in with 25+ people. Well, the girl on the phone was super nice even though I was calling the day of and tried anyways. Already liking this place. When we rolled in at 9, it was super busy inside, but we found out they had an awesome outdoor area. We were more than able to all sit at one long table. Hooray! Later, we were able to move inside, which has great accommodations too. All the bartenders were super chill and friendly. There were waiters coming around about every 10-15 min. clearing out cups, plates. And the food comes out very fast too. The bouncer here was also super nice. He was just chillin, takin IDs, and readin books. Really friendly, but could definitely turn on his intimidation factor. I will definitely be back. read more

It's funny, we take advantage of those we love. *That* must be the reason why I haven't written a review for the K&K yet...! This place is the default bar. You can rack your brain thinking of where else to go... and always end up here because you know there will be a place to sit, good company, and the owner, waitstaff and regulars are rad. AND pitchers are a-plenty! And shots if your into that kind of thing... Also love to come here for their pub quiz, which is challenging - especially the "picture" round which includes two or more pages of blurry, grainy pictures typically of people (both popular and obscure), sometimes of geography... it's hard, dammit - and it can make or break your chances at winning "the pot" or a free pitcher. Which by the time you are done with the quiz (11 or so) the last thing you need is a ANOTHER pitcher... or else, you REQUIRE IT with A VENGEANCE. A vengeance which will surely kick your ass when you wake up early for work the next day... not that I would know anything about that. :) My only beef with them is regarding their food - it's not terrible, their jo-jo style "fries" are pretty greasy delicious. I don't know, it's bar food and it's decent, but I would like to look forward to eating their food, not just tolerating it because I've got the drunk munchies. It's a cool place and the regulars are characters... Especially during the "special events" they hold - fun is had by all and I love it. read more

Place is fun, low key and casual. Pros: Fun place for trivia on Wednesday nights. Bartenders/staff are really friendly and they have a good selection of beer and my favorite ciders on tap! I found the veggie burger (sweet potato & chickpea with a cilantro garlic yogurt sauce) to be extremely flavorful and very filling. The yogurt sauce and cucumber slices really made this dish memorable. Cons: Nothing comes to mind...I'll update if/when applicable. read more

The owner Brad is the shit and he always has fun parties, football games, karaoke, live djs, Sunday fundays, a super fun Christmas party, the list is endless! They support the local community. We'd been meaning to try this pub for quite a while, since it's conveniently located so close to the Majestic Bay movie theater. They had a nice enough tap list of beers, and a good variety of bottled ciders. Having been to Melbourne earlier this year, we were excited to take our taste buds down memory lane - so we ordered a meat pie and chicken parma. Unfortunately, the pie was under seasoned and overbaked. The parma was the better of the two, but just missing something in the flavor department. Confusingly, there's a DJ and music on Saturday nights. On the upside, if you're looking for a sports bar in central Ballard, this is your place. The rich 100 year old plus cherry wood framing decorated with dive bar furniture and garnished with Christmas lights in the middle of July give me flash backs to my years at Washington State University. It's kinda sad to me that a building with such amazing architecture is unfortunately being misused with a stinky pub. But the environment is like any pub, so its good at what it's doing - friendly staff, nice selection of beers, don't come looking for carefully crafted cocktails or an extensive wine list. Almost every time that I have visited the Kangaroo & Kiwi has resulted in me leaving tipsy and full of beer. For me, this is a rare sort of occurrence upon leaving a bar, and speaks volumes for the comfy/charming environment that the Kiwi has to offer. Plus, where else would I watch rugby? I generally only come here for drinks after pre-gaming somewhere else honestly. But I usually have a pretty good time when I do end up here! The outside area is GREAT when its hot/warm/ not raining outside, and the drinks are a fair price. The bartenders seem lazy and bored however, and the drinks can be pretty inconsistent in taste/ strength/ and even size. This is my largest complaint. The area gets pretty full, but so does everywhere so nothing new there. The side room gets turned into a "dance" area on occasion, just by shoving the tables and chairs as far away as possible, which serves its purpose but also is a poor use of space. The fries are the only thing I've ordered late night, and they were delish. I came here for brunch one time however, after seeing advertised previously that they had bottomless mimosas and ordered brunch with one of my friends. We both got the hash with pork belly, which was pretty good, but needed seasoning, and the hash was more just chopped potatoes that weren't crispy at all (a preference of mine). We both got mimosas, and ended up finishing those and got them refilled, both were fine, not very big and nothing super exciting, okay fine whatever. But then we got our bill and everything in total (each) was around $33. Not a good price for the amount/ quality of food we got, and we were charged for two mimosas each. I asked about the bottomless mimosa and the guy just looked at me weird and then turned away. Pretty rude actually. Overall, good place to go when you're already drunk, your friends are there, and you don't care too much, but I would not go there for brunch, or if you are picky about drinks, food, price, quality, consistency, etc. read more

K&K is super. Been around for many years. Food is getting better. Try a floater you will love it. They are now doing Sunday Roast (found out by dropping by one Sunday afternoon for a quick pint), while not as good as my Nan makes its probably the best I have had in Seattle.
