Service is always good, food is consistently great. This isn't like some Japanese steakhouses with a big show. It's on a much smaller scale, but still entertaining. I will say their Filet Minion is the best I've had and I've had a lot in my life. Sushi choices are good and tasty (pricier). If you don't mind dropping a couple hundred on a dinner for 4, then this is a great choice. If you avoid alcohol and don't get the feasts or sushi you can get away with around $80 for two people just for the grill. Love it! read more

Early afternoon on a weekend, not too crowded, waited to be seated for quite a while. after getting a seat, we tried a couple of appetizers. California roll was not the greatest. lacked flavor. Hibachi chicken and steak was my main. $3.00 upcharge for fried rice that had no flavor. Chicken was overcooked and tough. Yum Yum sauce had a funky aftertaste like flour and was not appealing. My partner and I visited for the first time last night and enjoyed our visit. We opted for sushi (not hibachi), so this review is based on that. We were seated promptly (after the hostess was able to get an unprepared call-in customer to complete their order) in the bar/booth part of the restaurant. Our server was kind and provided quick service. We ordered two drinks from their specials board, and they tasted like college: fruit with a lot of booze. Our sushi was pretty and tasty. My one complaint was that the futo-maki role is listed with crabmeat but was prepared with crabstick. Otherwise, the fish tasted fresh and the rolls were a nice portion. Overall, our experience was that this is a no frills restaurant with good service times, reasonable prices, and tasty sushi. read more

Looking for a place for sushi in Licking county we ended up at Kanji. Once we got there the hibachi sounded so good we ended up ordering that instead. We went for lunch. It was quiet due to the lunch hour but that didn't stop the level of service we received. Our chef was friendly and made jokes with us as he cooked out meal. The amount of food we got wasn't too much and didn't leave me feeling overly full. The salad dressing was delicious and the salad crispy and fresh. Hibachi does take awhile to cook so if you are looking for a fast lunch this isn't the best choice but it is oh so worth it if you have time. We will definitely be going back to try other dishes and maybe even try the sushi next time! read more

I just ordered food today at 9:00 pm they close at 9:30pm. I get home to find out they messed up our order, they gave us shrimp when I said no shrimp because my GF is allergic to shrimp, and NO bean sprouts because I'm allergic to them!! I called and said we can't eat this food we are allergic to food you added that we asked you not to! They said I have to BRING THE FOOD BACK IN TOMORROW to get a refund. I have to work!!?? Not the best Habachi I've ever had, not the worst. I ordered the chicken and shrimp with fried rice instead of white. Their yum yum sauce definitely was not my favorite- a bit watery and bland. I was starving, so a little soy sauce, salt and pepper and I was good to go. It was definitely filling and plentiful. The chicken was cooked nicely and so was the shrimp; both tasted good. The fried rice was okay, a tad bit over cooked. The vegetables were less than stellar as they were way too mushy. 50% of it was onion, with some zucchini, mushrooms and carrots. No bean sprouts at all! =( Overall, not too bad. It's possible that hibachi is not meant to be ordered to go. Probably would've tasted better if we had dined in! read more

Well this is gonna be a real easy review. It's kinda strange that our times here have been so limited. We walk in and immediately go to our seats. Every waitress we have encountered here seem rude. I haven't been able to put a finger on it but we have gone two times. Both times after getting our water we have left. It's not just me. My wife feels the same way. She seems to think its something with the environment that we don't care for. Even as we left there was a waitress approach us with an aggressive attitude or maybe just rude. Terrible!!! I will never be back. I would never recommend this place! Took at least an hour to get our food. Steak was burnt and chicken was not done! I was very surprised on my first visit to Kanji. Wife and I thought it would be empty on a Saturday at 2PM but we were surprised to see this place packed. Actually shocked from the get go. Packed house in the middle of the afternoon usually means good things. Place was clean and comfortable. Service might have been a tad slow, but I understand that Japanese steakhouses don't run like a Mark Pi's. Chef was lots of fun. Cool knife work, bad jokes, and big flames are all part of the experience and our chef did not disappoint. Food was really good. Something as simple as fried rice is really outstanding here especially when you add the yum yum sauce to it. My wife and I had a most pleasant dining experience and will certainly return. This has been our go to hibachi steak house for many years. The food is most generally cooked right, favorable portions and witty chefs. Very adequate for this type of restaurant. The purpose of my review is to bring attention to the overall lack of cleanliness and capital investment. The carpets are ripped and greasy, the tile between the grills are cracked and filthy as well as walls greasy. The bathroom smelled, stall was broke and is in dire need of some paint and a good scrubbing. For the $35 per person we spent, I expect much more. read more

I come here often, and am in absolute love with their sushi!! Especially the Twin Tower sushi roll!! I get it every time, the crab rolls as the base are always fresh, and the eel and cream cheese combo is divine!! The salad with yum yum dressing is really good! And their mushroom soup is always the perfect temperature! The hibachi is a joy to watch, and is always packed with flavor! The waitstaff are always great, and they know my order by heart by now!! The main server was very friendly and our party of nine were sat soon after we arrived. The prices are not bad at all. I had the shrimp and scallops with fried rice, mushroom soup and a salad with ginger dressing. Our chef was very good at tossing the food around was very comical! He did a great job! It was my sister's birthday, so the wait-staff came out singing and gave her a pineapple birthday dessert. I was SO full by the time I left (and had to take half of my dinner in a box). New to the area, and overshadowed by the mall culture around it... Kanji is another addition to the culinary offerings in the Newark/Heath area that leaves you, ultimately, rather unsatisfied In my estimation, all Hibachi restaurants are pretty much the same: Hibachi, throw rice on a grill with some veggies, cook up some seafood, poultry, or steak and plate them elegantly with a 200% upcharge for tableside presentation. Truly, the only thing that differentiates these particular establishments are decor and the chefs' personality and skills. Neither one of these particular things is really up to par at Kanji. Sure, the decor is great in the waiting area: bamboo leaves drape the wall and running water provides some nice, settling white noise. The inside leaves a lot to be desired however, with walls that are taupe and devoid of pictures. Our chef, a man who claimed to be the head/exec chef at the place, was a nice fellow: singing renditions of Elvis tunes to my friends and even giving them flack for ordering a steak Well-Done (something I have wanted to do on numerous occasions), but he didn't really know when to quit: After asking where we were from, he commented that he knew a girl from that area and had had a sexual fling with her. ..uh, yeah, when you're cooking my fish... I don't wanna hear about your sex life... unwanted correlations happen. I'm just saying. In their defense, it's a new place and they are probably adding decor little by little. The hibachi is mediocre (I would have liked Miso as a pre-course soup rather than Udon) and the sushi is bland (sticky rice was a tad TOO sticky). Personally, if you're really in the mood for a Japanese steakhouse. Save up your money and check out Genji or the one near North Market whose name is escaping me at the moment... you'll be glad you did. read more

Oh boy...where to start. We went to Kanji's this past Saturday evening, which is normally a fine establishment filled with great food and entertainment. It was 6pm, only one other table occupied. We were a table of 8, celebrating our family being together for the holidays for the first time in FIVE years! This has never happened before, but we had the WORST chef/entertainer EVER. His name was Ricky, and the extent of his entertainment was he threw rice at one of the two little girls, and spun an egg and said "egg roll." He looked annoyed, and argued with the eldest female at the table when an order was miscommunicated, and said "your plate, or you don't eat" to the furthest people from the table (which is never how it works). That was it. He asked twice if everything tasted good, but by then no one wanted to talk. He made the night quiet and uncomfortable. It's like we went to the kitchen and watched them prepare our $20 meals. Ricky did not smile once, and we were forced to watch other new tables have fun and be excited. I feel like I'm forgetting a ton of other mishaps, but that's all I can think at the moment. Everyone was looking at eachother like "what the heck is this guy's problem?" Ricky, we did nothing to warrant such poor service. The kids were disappointed. Grandma couldn't believe she paid $160 to get yelled at, and you didn't use all of the cool entertainment options that were on your cart (it was the kids who noticed that). You ruined our family dinner. You're there to create an experience, you didn't. You will talked about for years to come, because we won't be back on your account. Happy Holidays. read more

Let me begin by saying that I'm generally not a huge fan of Japanese steakhouses. While I do enjoy the show, the food just isn't me. I'll eat it, it's pretty good, but I only go when someone else chooses to eat at one. That being said, this one is my favorite. My husband and I had heard good things so decided to give it a try. So glad that we did! Our first trip was fabulous. Our chef was super friendly and we enjoyed his company. He was personable and out on a fun show. The food was good, no complaints here. My husband (who loves Japanese steakhouses) said his was great. Our second trip was just as good. The place is nice, clean, has good food, and is friendly. I'd totally eat there again. It's not cheap, but it's a little less than the Columbus-area steakhouses that we have visited, and we actually enjoyed it more. read more

First off, I must say I was very disappointed by the lack of entrees that didn't include stir fry. Maybe it's just me, but I'm surprised that if you choose to sit in a regular booth that you are regulated to just eating sushi and appetizers? Maybe I was just confused by the menu, but I was craving some plain yakisoba noodles that required no grill. After that revelation, I was full prepared to give this place at most a 3, but after getting the veggie entree from the grill, I was highly impressed with the flavor. At most steakhouses, the chef simply douses all of the food with as much sauce as possible and hopes his fancy tricks will make you forget that you're eating a mound of salt. Well not this place. The food was seasoned perfectly which allowed for you to experiment with the garlic and ginger sauces without feeling as though you are going to have high blood pressure or hyper tension by the end of the meal. I don't usually suggest going to Japanese steakhouses unless I'm explicitly getting sushi or noodles, but this is the exception! read more

I went to dinner last night for my friends birthday and everything was going fine UNTIL the entire area started smelling like literal poop. The rancid smell was coming from the bar area and lingering into the dining room. I asked about the smell because everyone in our party was gagging and could not eat and the server said it was the grease traps.
