The food is amazing. Some of the best ramen in Austin. The owner is very kind and helpful. I would not hesitate to go.

The food was just ok at best. The ramen broth was kind of sweet which was a bit odd. The noodles were hidden under the broth and when I tried to get my first bite, I was unpleasantly surprised to see that the noodles were in a huge clump and it took a long time for them to break apart and act like noodles. We got a shrimp maki which was actually like a crunchy shrimp roll. We also got the fried tofu which was a very very very VERY firm tofu so that was also a bit odd and distasteful. The next thing was the donkatsu slider which actually did not come on bread. It was served in slices with rice on the side. (maybe they don't know what "slider" means?) We got edamame which had HUGE chunks of salt ALLLLLLL over it. It was a bit overboard. Last and most importantly we got many orders of mochi icecream (like 8 orders) and they all tasted old. The mochi didn't have an elastic, stretchy, gummy etc texture. It was more like a dry piece of bread that had been frozen with icecream in the middle. We questioned if they were out of date. The whole experience was just not very nice. To top it all off, they didn't have the AC on and we were all sweating our butts off. We had two infants with us and they were both sweating from the heat and became uncomfortable during our dinner stay. I'm not sure if I would come back here. It's a sad day for us since we were REALLY looking forward to this place due to it being up north near Cedar Park. I still wanted to give a couple of stars for the cute interior and concept that they are trying to accomplish. read more

Wasn't very impressed with the ramen compared to Tatsuya, will just drive down there next time. The Spicy Miso was literally just Miso ramen with a glob of chili paste at the top I had to mix in. Average ramen for above average price. That pretty much sums up our experience at Kanji. We came on a chilly evening, perfect for a hot bowl of ramen. The interior was dark and gloomy. We came at peak dinner hours and there was only one other occupied table. For the appetizers, we got the Shrimp Tempura and the Donburi Bowl. I don't know what kind of shrimps they used but they were literally the thinest shrimps I've ever seen. Once you remove the breading, the cooked shrimps are only about a quarter of an inch in diameters. The donburi bowl was actually tasty but someone added way too much salt at the end to make it almost inedible. For the ramens, we got the Kanji Ramen and the Tonkatsu Ramen. The broth was ok. The noodles tasted like packaged ramen. The chachu was small and kind of tough, nothing like those tender ones from other ramen places. On top of that, the bowls were priced at the exact same level as the competitions while serving lesser portions. By itself, I guess Kanji is ok if you're really craving ramen. But given the competition in the Austin area from places such as Tatsu-ya, Jinya, or even Michi, there's really no reason to come to Kanji. read more

Good ramen*, cool decor, and never too busy. The ramen itself is a little different from other places; it has a lot more vegetables in many of the choices. I love veggies so that was a plus for me. I also enjoyed that the ramen was not overly salty like other places i've been to in Austin. It might be a little bland for those who like salt. The decor is super cool looking and gives off hang out spot vibes. Also, out of the two times I've come it was never super busy. That's a plus because I hate overly crowded places. Just a note: I've been here twice and the food portion and service varied. The first time the meat portions were bigger and the gentleman in the front was very friendly and often checked on us. The second time the meat portions were a little smaller and the gentleman who helped us was a bit more terse and preoccupied. We didn't really mind because the restaurant is counter service: order and pay at the cashier, they bring out your food when it's ready. read more

Spicy ramen was very tasty. It's a nice place that isn't crowded. I'm surprised there weren't more people when I came at dinner time. Austin some good ramen places, so while this place is not my favorite, it does the trick when I'm craving ramen and I don't have to wait in long lines (like at ramen tatsuya or jinya). Solid spot for ramen, though not the greatest. We came on a weekday night and it was empty. The prices are okay and service was nice. I ordered a beef bowl and a crispy salad, both which were decent but didn't blow me away. The beef rice bowl didn't have as much beef as I expected, but the egg was great. My fiance ordered the spicy miso ramen and the broth was pasty, with almost a powdery texture, rather than smooth and creamy. He ordered an extra egg but only got 1/2 of an egg on his ramen which was odd. The space is quite nice; I can imagine it being a good late-night meal sort of spot, but it isn't somewhere I would frequent when craving ramen. read more

This is by far my favorite ramen spot in Austin! I've tried all the big ones and I always come back to Kanji for their spicy miso. It's spicy but not too spicy and has such a great depth of flavor. You know I have this weird thing where I want to try out every ramen place in town. I think I've had it all - the good, the bad and the ugly. Kanji was the last ramen place I have yet to try and finally I have tried it one Sunday morning when I had to pick up something from Austin Trail Running Company. It was hidden in a brick mini mall where there's dance studios and skin care spas. I come in and I saw a cute, cartoon mural on the wall. Of course, they had something for kids in which they had a coloring sheet where you can pick up at the counter when you order your ramen. I hate to admit this buy yes, I did take a coloring sheet. I notice a lot of families come to this place a lot. Anyway, I ordered the Kanji Signature Ramen because it seem to appeal to me and plus I think I've had all of the ramen from other places. Their signature ramen came is a Creamy pork bone soup with soy sauce based seasoning with 3 chashu, ajitama egg, wood ear mushroom , corn, nori, bamboo, fried garlic and green onion. It's pretty good ramen in a laid back atmosphere where it's not too trendy. If that's your thing, then this is the place for you. read more

I'll start this review plagiarizing another review. In the immortal words of another review, "average ramen for above average price. That pretty much sums up our experience at Kanji. We came on a chilly evening, perfect for a hot bowl of ramen." And after having some pretty good ramen earlier this week, have to say Kanji is just passable. I ordered a #1 signature ramen that's effective a tonkotsu shoyu blend with extra chashu, nori, mushrooms and bamboo with an egg. The broth tastes good but is definitely on the thin side. It doesn't soak into the noodles very well and you only get the hit of flavor when you drink it directly, but the flavor is good. The sides are a bit bland - chashu is fatty and reminds me of bossam - clean pork flavor but not much additional seasoning on its own. The bamboo is a bit sharply cut, which gives it a woody texture (for better or worse). The egg came out in the soup cold, which is more jarring than anything. The owners are nice and check up here and there. Ambiance and space is quite nice if you care (especially the mural). So if lighter feeling ramen is your cup of noodle, then you'll love Kanji. But I like mine a bit more stout personally, so that's where I take away from the ramen eating experience. read more

3.5 stars. Really excited for a ramen place up north & this place really did hit the spot for my ramen craving. Kanji ramen broth was very flavorful & the ramen noodle texture was nice & chewy. Service was very friendly & I have no complaints. However, for the price, the portions are quite small compared to Michi and Tatsuya. Even with extra noodles, I was still left wanting more. The tonkatsu was well fried with the perfect sauce, but it was pretty tiny for almost $6. It is great if you're craving ramen & have a big group because there's no line-- not even on a Friday evening. I would definitely come back more often if they served larger portions! :) read more

I've had a better cup of noodles off the grocery store shelf then here. I ordered their signature Ramen, Kanji ramen to go. Like the other reviews the broth is very mild with flavor (bland as close to just being water), the pork chasu had zero seasoning and was bland and overcooked, the vegetables were an odd assortment as well. So they use egg based noodles, which I've eaten at other ramen places and it didn't matter but when the broth has no flavor to over power the noodle it's like eating al-dente Noodles out of the pot. My two current go to's for Ramen in Austin are Ramen Tatsuya and if you don't want to wait my runner up is Haru Ramen. I did call and speak to a manager and they did offer to remake it, but first impressions last and I declined to return. First, last and only time I will go. read more

Wanting to try a new ramen place, I was happy that I found one close to where I live! Upon entering, be on the lookout for the really neat wall with drawings on it! Anyway, I ordered at the counter and I got to try the kanji ramen and the spicy miso ramen. The ramen noodles were cooked well with that nice chewy, but not too chewy, texture. The broth itself was good! It definitely was not as heavy compared to other ramen that I've had. I especially enjoyed the spicy miso ramen - it had the perfect spiciness. First visit here! I ordered the signature Kanji ramen, donburi, gyoza, and pork belly buns. First off, the ramen: I always compare new places to Michi since that's my top ramen place as of right now. The broth was flavorful, but thinner than the broth at Michi. The noodles were softer as well, and I prefer slightly chewy noodles. The meat was not very good, like fatty, tough pork belly. Definitely won't be coming here for ramen again. As for the other stuff, the gyoza was nice and crispy and the donburi was good tasting but a small portion. This little place is a bit removed from the normal hustle and bustle of main Austin. It's a quaint little restaurant in a very non-discreet area that has a cafe vibe. Girlfriend and I ordered the Kanji Ramen, Sukiyaki Ramen, and the Gyudon - Beef Donburi. The Kanji Ramen has a bit of a smokey flavor and is less oily than Tatsuya's ramen, making the dish feel lighter. The Sukiyaki Ramen is the reason I continue to come back here. Unlike the traditional ramen, the bowl comes with noodles slightly submerged in a sweet beef broth/sauce. The idea is to drink a small amount of broth with each spoonful of noodles, resulting in a very satisfying bite. Since the noodles aren't drowning in broth, they retain a firmer texture. The beef itself can be on the dryer side, but overall it doesn't take away from a very tasty experience. The beef Donburi is basically the rice version of the Sukiyaki. It's a decent choice if you get another ramen bowl and are still hungry, but otherwise I'd just order the Sukiyaki. read more

I came here for lunch. It's going I to the counter to order then grab a seat anywhere you like and they will bring the food out. I got the #1kanji ramen add egg and spicy paste on the side with a side order of steak on the stick. Ramen: broth was ok. On the healthier side since not as oily as many other places. Ramen consistency was good: not too soggy or not too hard. The proportion of ramen to broth can be better since once it was 3/4 ramen and veggies and only 1/4 broth. Egg was 70% cooked so it's still have the liquid ish but more on the harder cooked side. Steak: it was either medium or medium well. I prefer jt medium rare or at least if they ask how I like it being done would be better. The potion of the steak was good. So I thought it was quite cheap for this size. However there were too much seasoning on the outside and not enough time for the season to soak on the inside of the steak. read more

Ramen has gone a long way from the 20c packets sold in grocery stores, to one of the long coveted, labor of love meals. It is one of my favorite meals. By now, I have had numerous bowls of hot steaming ramen. I went here for lunch, to try out some ramen. The place is a bit out of my ways, but I am always up for trying out a new ramen place. I ordered the Shoyu Ramen. It is my favorite type of ramen broth. But perhaps, it's not one of Kanji's specialty. My bowl of ramen came with some kikurage (woodear mushroom), half ajitama (boiled egg), nori (seaweed), menma (bamboo shoots), 2 slices of chasu (pork belly), and green onions. The 3 things that define a good ramen (in my mind) are: the broth, the noodle, and the pork belly. Kanji fell short of 2 of the 3. The broth was at the right temperature, not scalding hot, not too lukewarm. But I am not sure why, it has a enough bitterness taste to it to bother me. The pork belly was underwhelming, almost on the tasteless side. The noodle was alright. I am not sure if I would go back. Fortunate for us consumers, we have plenty of other choices to go for ramen. Unfortunately for Kanji Ramen, they will have to step up their broth, if they want to compete with other ramen places. read more

Excellent. My hubs and I both ordered the Signature ramen. The broth is rich but not too salty or oily (my stomach can't handle the broth at Tatsuya). My 4 year old daughter took one sip of the broth and was wowed! She immediately declared this her favorite restaurant. She finished the whole kids bowl. My son also loves this but didn't swoon like he did for Tatsuya. So we are a divided family. What does a 6 year old know anyway? Thank god he can't drive or make dinner decisions just yet. Tatsuya's broth is complex but can be overly salty. Michi has too much stuff in their ramen. Kanji is a great medium. Their broth is tasty and their portions are HUGE. Went for lunch and got the crispy tofu and Kanji Ramen. The tofu's sauce has vinegar so it's not sweet like you'd expect. It's a nice change with the smokey bonito shavings. The ramen broth is the best here in town and they don't skimp on the noodles. There was no wait and the wall mural is so cute. I could spend an hour looking at all the cute things crammed into it. The service was fast and the owner was very friendly. Go for the ramen that you can get without a wait. And that's worth every minute. read more

Finally found a ramen place in Austin that I enjoy!! I loved the inside of this restaurant- the art that covered an entire wall was so, so cute!! I went around noon and didn't have to wait at all to be seated and the food came out really fast too. I'm so glad that this ramen place has multiple veggie option- a veggie and a spicy veggie. I got the spicy veggie and really enjoyed it- I could actually taste the spice! It came with a good amount of noodles as well as vegetables and tofu. Oh, you'd be a fan of this place too if: 1. You like rooting for the underdog now & then. 2. You swear you hear a bunch of people Riverdancing next door. No, really. Lord of the Tonkotsu! 3. You're in some brand new squeaky clean mom-&-pop restaurant in a sketchy strip mall on North 183, and even though they were slammed & jammed on a Wednesday night, they were genuinely happy to see you. Now that's sweet. And here's what you're working with: Five kinds of ramen & ten small dishes. Four pork-based broths & one veggie, with the small dishes running the gamut of gyoza to katsu to chashu. You order at the counter, they bring your stuff, and you get your own water. The Crispy Tofu was pretty decent, but I actually did a double-take with the veggie ramen over the spicy miso one - an unexpected savory broth of soy & mushroom. Good stuff. And here's the deal: If you already have a favorite ramen place, we both know you'll like Kanji less, so why dwell on it? That's just the way it is, human nature, nothing personal. (Hmmm, I could use that logic with BBQ & burger places too.) Do you really want to read two more paragraphs comparing toppings, add-ons, and who makes a better egg? Hooray Ramen on the north side!! My husband and I met two of friends for dinner before we went to a very late movie. I saw this business posted on Yelp back in like December or January. I have anticipated this opening for a while. When we walked in there were a few tables that were already seated. It wasn't packed but it was decent. They just opened a few days before also. This is counter service. They have a short menu but everything looked great. A few different ramens and a variety of small plates. I went with the Kanji Ramen Original. Hubby got the Tonkatsu with a side of rice. He was eating light because he didn't want to be too full while we watched a 2 hour movie. The lady that took our order I'm guess is the owner she was very nice and friendly. There is a really cool mural on the wall that I read their daughter made. Very impressive. We didn't have to wait long and our food was being paraded to our table. There was a smoky taste to my ramen which I think was due to the pork. Broth was stout and not oily or greasy. The corn, egg, nori and noodles were a great food symphony in my mouth. After I was finished the baby was moving around a lot in my belly. I think he really enjoyed it also. He literally was moving around like a maniac. I didn't get to a chance to taste my Husband's Tonkatsu but it was all gone so I know he enjoyed it. Solid example of "they could've been great but...". Came here around 1pm. Ordered a chashu bowl, gyoza and the signature kanji ramen. Gyoza is a must everytime I go for ramen and I do judge the place based on how much I like it. Their gyoza, It's one of those deep fried ones, not the pan fried gyoza (or at least that's what I think). Tasted like a typical gyoza with nothing more or special to say. Moving on to chashu bowl, this was very very disappointing. Honestly, I havent had chashu this bad in a while; tasteless and rubbery. Gave one to my friend and barely finished mine, when I got my kanji ramen and noticed it was the same chashu I just took it out of my ramen bowl and said "out you go". And now the signature kanji ramen, it's a tonkotsu ramen with soy based broth. The broth has the traditional tonkotsu flavor to it but also some mushroom ish flavor (I doubt its mushroom though), which is quite unique and I enjoyed it. Noodles are your traditional Japanese ramen noodle with firm texture, not the straight or thin noodles. The bowl came with chashu, ajitama, wood ear mushroom, grilled corn, bakchoi, nori, fried garlic, bamboo and kuromayu. Now I'm not going to pick on what needs to be or not in their ramen, especially since this is a signature ramen for them, but corn and bakchoi was definitely an interesting choice. Actually I enjoyed the bakchoi, it went pretty well with the broth. Ajitama though, I've had better, hell I've made some better tasting than that. The server didnt seem enthusiastic about his job but the chef did come out and check on every table(which was really nice). Honestly if you want to try something different, come over and try the kanji ramen. If I ever do come back, I'll give regular tonkotsu a try but I do hope they do something to that chashu because it is not attractive. read more

Ambience - a very nice cozy and homey little shop. The vibe going here is very relaxing and inviting. The color scheme is red and black and they have a huge painted mural of random anime and Japanese art. The store isn't very big with only about a dozen tables. However I just love the decor and vibe here Menu - as the name implies the main cuisine is ramen dishes. There is about 8 ramen dishes and then an assortment of other items like appetizers, tempura and don bowls. Not a very big menu but that's ok, stick to your guns. They do hit some of the main items for ramen like sukiyaki, tonkotsu and chashu. So not a big variety but a decent menu focused almost solely on ramen. Service - came in around 1:00 and the place was empty aside from a couple in front ordering. There was a young Asian girl working the front and she was really friendly. She had a good demeanor and a good attitude. She spoke well and was very polite. I was also greeted by another Asian gentleman about halfway thru my meal to make sure everything was good. So the people I interacted with were pretty cool and gave great service. They even bus your table for you, which always makes me feel bad because momma always says to clean up your own damn mess. So when I asked where do I put my dishes the gentleman said he would get it I was like are you sure? He was yeah. So I made sure to clean up and organize my table before I left. Super chill and friendly peeps Food - if some place says they have a signature dish i will always get it. Because if cant get your signature dish down then you probably cant make anything right. So I ordered the Kanji Ramen (pork bone and soy broth, chashu, wood ear mushroom, corn, nori, bamboo, ajitama egg, garlic and green onion). The bowl is a pretty generous bowl of stuff. Obviously the ratio is mostly noodles and then the other ingredients. So I mix everything up and begin to chew down. The broth was very nice. It was a flavorful and savory broth that wasnt overly complex. A lot of people complain because they are used to a very robust and complex kick to the face. But this was a great savory broth that was simple but tasty. The menu says 3 pieces of chashu but I got way more than that. Which was awesome as the chashu was really good. Nice and flavorful and still tender and moist. It had a great taste. The other veggies were a nice compliment to the whole. Corn was sweet, bamboo crisp and mushrooms tasty. It was definitely a nice ramen dish. It does come with 2 sheets of nori but I didn't see the use or necessity for it. I sure some people know why or how to use it (I mean yes, I know, eat it) but i feel like it was meant for something in particular. Overall this was a solid dish. I see some people saying bland but that might be because alot of other places use alot or spices and spicy ingredients. So that's what they are used to. But my dish was a great savory and tastey dish. Overall - I love the ambience of this place. It's very homey and just feels nice. The menu is simple but sticks to what they know best. I've been here multiple times by now, so here's my first review for Kanji. Customer service is friendly and good mostly. Their bathroom is clean (this is kind of a big deal to me when it comes to dining facilities! I believe this indicates how much the business cares about food safety), as well as dining spaces. Most of the time, there is no line and food will be served fairly quickly. Decent sized parking spaces - I never have problem to park here whenever stopping by. They offer wifi, which is a big plus for me. I have very high standards for ramen noodle dishes. Their noodle is a little too soft and mushy, maybe cooked too longer than it supposed to? Other than the noodle, broth has some flavor and toppings are good. At this price point, I expect slightly more for portion. Tatsu-ya and other older establishments are still big kids on the block. Kanji is 3.5 stars so far, but I'm rounding up to 4. Will update any improvements are made in the future. read more

Let me begin by saying that I have tried both Tatsuya and Michi ramen a few times now. And I just don't find Ramen Tatsuya to be all the hype that it is. At Kanji ramen, I got the number 1, the Kanji special. The broth is a pork bone based broth, and it was creamy and oh so yummy. The Chasu was delicious. The noodles weren't over cooked and had the perfect bite. Everything about my bowl was so good. All in all I just wanted more noodles to go with the rest of my broth. In addition, I also had a spoon of my boyfriend's veggie ramen, and that broth was EVEN BETTER than mine. This place is new, but it's going in the right direction. The walk in and ordering at the counter makes the experience quick, but their quality in service doesn't lack whatsoever. The man who brought our bowls was so friendly, and made small conversation with us. And then the lady who took our order later came to ask how our ramen was. Everyone here was so genuine, I mean how often do you see employees again to check up on you AFTER you've ordered at the front? The wall art when you first walk in gives the restaurant loads of character, and though the place is small, finding a place to sit is no problem, whether it be table or at the counter.
