Truly one of the best Sushi and Hibachi restaurants in Monmouth County. I started going to Kanji in 2010. My first experience was with hibachi. The presentation was entertaining, on top of the prepared dished being cooked perfectly. The hibachi was nothing to rave about, seeing as most of the items on the list can be ordered at any hibachi joint, but what got me hooked was a side order of sashimi. At that point, I had not experienced many types of sushi, but I was familiar with tuna, and was willing to give it a shot. The slices of tuna were thick and the perfect size for single bites. Coming from a family of fishing charters, I've had sashimi right off the fish. This was quite fresh. I was thoroughly impressed. From there, I made a trip to eat in the normal dining area to try some rolls on a birthday or another special event. I had the Volcano roll, with a spicy tuna and sweet potato roll on the side. Once again, blown away. The Volcano roll was a great blend of spicy and savory. It really has a kick! The sweet potato roll was larger than what most places serve, which is nice considering regular maki can be pretty small depending on where you go. The spicy tuna was well seasoned and quite large as well. Prices were about average, but the quality and quantity speaks volumes. I've never been to another sushi place that can fill you up without breaking the bank like Kanji. To this date, I've eaten there an excess of 20 times. I've had the lunch combos which are priced pretty well, especially the three maki for $12 deal. I've also had a ton of the special rolls, including the Volcano, Sweet Plus, Osaka Box, Lobster Rock&Roll, Tuna Amazing, and Crazy Friday. All of them are very decadent, and were fresh for every order. I've had a couple appetizers on occasion. The rock shrimp is awesome, though some of the other appetizers are nothing out of the ordinary (like the calamari and gyoza). The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I've been late to reservations before and having accommodations made on the spot with no hassle from the hostesses. Roger Yang is a super nice guy and isn't afraid to talk to the customers when he isn't busy behind the sushi bar calling the shots. The decor is pretty modern and warm, without being overly stereotypical "asian restaurant" feel or ambitious. I would recommend this restaurant to any sushi fan. read more

I was completely disappointed by Kanji, but maybe I caught them on a bad night. I went for a friend's birthday dinner because Kanji is her favorite restaurant. The restaurant itself overall has a nice atmosphere. The server first brings out miso soup, and salad with a ginger dressing. The miso soup was very good but the salad's dressing was very runny. I ordered the hibachi chicken, which comes with a shrimp appetizer, lo mein, fried rice, and vegetables. The hibachi chef was very interactive with us as a group, but maybe too interactive that he overcooked the food. My rice was crunchy and my chicken was dry...so overcooked that it took FOREVER to chew and get through it. It was also fairly expensive, for just the hibachi chicken I paid around 30 dollars for the entree and tip. This does NOT include drinks. Kanji is my fav japanese joint in the area. You should definately try the sushi rolls here as they stuff each roll with very generous portions of fish. The Bento boxes are alright, but I think the Sushi is Kanji's strong point. The decour/ambience is very calming with just enough space between tables to not feel crowded. *** Update *** Just had the hibachi here and it was horrible, perhaps it was because I did not sit at the hibachi table but I am merely judging the food here. The sauces that came with my hibachi were so bland it tasted like the dressing on the salad. And the cooked food itself just tasted bland like they forgot to salt it. This is some of the best sushi I have ever had period. The chef and owner, Roger, took his craft from Sawa and honed in on his art. I know a lot of people love Sawa and other sushi restaurants in the area, but if you haven't tried Kanji you are truly missing out. Super accomodating, better than Sea Bright/Red Bank prices, friendly and efficient staff, and a very seperate area to keep those crazy hibachi families away from me. The sushi here is very good, fresh, quickly prepared and nicely presented. The staff is warm and accomodating. We have not been able to get a seat at a hibachi table, but we have ordered the hibachi dinner for the dining room and it is mediocre. I would not ever order hibachi served in the dining room again. Been coming here for years for Hibachi and has been relatively consistent. The fried rice is to die for, and the quality overall of the food is top notch. Ambiance is nice and chefs are always friendly and enjoyable. Go with the Shrimp + Scallops or Filet + Scallops for Hibachi and you'll be walking out of there satisfied. Oh and BYO? Sign me up. Came here for a late lunch (around 1:30pm). The restaurant was fairly empty, with 3-4 other parties at any given time. However, the service was slower than it should have been. The pricing was reasonable but a little high in some places on the menu. I just got the basic stuff (lunch bento with 2 rolls and shrimp teriyaki), which tasted fine, but not special. Their specialty menu is pretty extensive and might be worth giving a shot if you feel like spending. This is also a nice place for a date or special occasion. However, I'd recommend going somewhere else if you just want a quick, no-frills sushi fix at a low price. read more

After seeing all the really good reviews, we were sure this place was going to be great. Unfortunately, we were sorely disappointed. Overall, we loved the look and feel of the place and menu options are great. However, it lacked in friendliness, service, and flavor. Specifically, when we first arrived, it took about 5 minutes to be greeted by the hostess - come to find out the hostess was also bussing tables (shouldn't they have a busser doing this?). When we sat down, it probably took another 5 minutes to be greeted by our waitress who was not friendly at all. Obviously, she was busy, but cracking a smile doesn't take extra time. The kicker? It took 45 minutes to get our food. Not okay in my book. At this point, we were still hopeful that despite the wait, the food would tip the scales in their favor. But alas, the spicy tuna roll had no spice to it whatsoever. And the Century 21 Roll which has 3 types of "spicy" fish in it, again, had no spice to it. It was drenched in the plum sauce. Such a bummer. I hate giving bad reviews, but I think it's important the business know about it and you, the reader, know what you're potentially getting into. One redeeming moment was when who we believe to be the manager came by and apologized for it being so busy. The service was great, although I was here on a Thursday as soon as they opened at 4:30pm. I forgot this place was a BYOB but conveniently located next-door... a liquor store! I purchased a bottle of wine (which I think was way overpriced)...but it is what it is!! I ordered my two favorite things... the yellowfin ceviche and tuna tartare! Both fabulous! Great sushi place. I am traveling and I went here on a Thursday night. The restaurant was not packed, so the service was really fast and very friendly, I didn't have to wait long at all. I ordered the seaweed salad, which was great, though pretty standard (most seaweed salads taste the same from restaurant to restaurant). I ordered 2 special rolls and the Philadelphia rolls. The 2 special rolls (sweet plus and fallen angel) were awesome. The Philadelphia roll was only so-so, which what brought this review from a 5 star to a 4 star. Overall a really good sushi place. This is my favorite local sushi spot. The sushi is always fresh and they have several unique rolls that are amazing. If you go here you have to try the Volcano roll, yes most sushi places have a volcano roll on the menu but this is completely different and won't disappoint. I usually get the calamari to start it's quite good here. Once in a while I do Hibachi and I would say it's definitely one of the better ones around for this as well. Just had my first taste of Kanji's food. My wife and I had some of the more expensive dishes (nice gift card) in the regular dinner area. We found the food quite good, with just the right degree of spice. The portions were good and the quality of the fish and beef was fine. The salad was topped with a ginger dressing and was refreshing. The soup was tasty. The wait staff were friendly, young and eager to please, and the management was solicitous. The decor was tasteful and the restrooms were clean. The prices were moderate. I will certainly get back for more when I have a chance. read more

Service was horrible, waitress was rude and didn't listen to what we actually ordered which resulted in our order being wrong. They charged us for the mess up even though they took the food back and the original order. When we paid, we paid in cash. The bill came to 69 and some change, gave them 100, and was told we were not getting change because it was the required tip plus waste of food charge. We eventually got our change when we said we would call the police. Never coming back and would advise others to be cautious. read more

So we've been going to kanji for awhile now. The last few months we have been getting take out due to the busy schedules. The take out is just as good as eating there. The dinners are packed in bento type containers with fried rice & noodles(which my son loves) and the shrimptizer along with the soup (which makes me feel refreshed..I know weird) & the salad. Pick up is within 10-20 mins. The restaurant itself is always a great atmosphere. If you don't feel like sitting in the restaurant then definitely get the takeout. Kanji has the best quality sushi in the area (that i've found). They have lunch specials Mon-Fri which are pretty great deals. This place is pretty darn'd good! I'm in love with the sushi, it's extremely fresh, and they don't over do it with the sauces (spicy tuna is seasoned JUST enough, you can still taste the sushi). I love the atmosphere, it's modern, VERY CLEAN, smells clean even when the place is full (some japanese restaurants leave you with foul odor on the way out... PPPP UUUU). You can get a bento box- soup, salad, two apps (YOU CAN GET TWO WOLE SUSHI ROLLS!) and an entree (chicken, sirlion, salmom, shrimp, terryaki or sushi or veg and shrimp tempura.) for 12...... YES 12 DOLLARS! There is no deal around like that, not even fast food. 4 stars for the usage or tempura chips. I'm not a huge fan of tempura chips in my sushi, they get mushi and taste like batter.... they tend to use these a lot. Also another tempura complaint. The shrimp tempura was way to soft for me! Maybe it was a rare mistake... but i was in the mood for tempura, splurged, and was not satisfied. BUT HANDS DOWN.... THIS IS THE BEST PLACE AROUND. Period. Better then BOTH sawa's, shiki, ichibahn, shogun, sumo. It's the best price, best quality outside the west coast, it's a fun time, and everything is good! BYOB only... no bar! They have take out... You really wouldn't expect too much from this place by looking at it from the outside. But on the inside is truly a top-quality hibachi and sushi joint. Located in a strip mall (the former home of numerous dollar stores and a hollywood video), I drove past this place a bunch of times think "I'm def not eating there." Then I read the good reviews on yelp, tried it out, and now I will add to them. The sushi is the best in the area. Some are partial to Sawa over in Eatontown, but this is my fave. Crazy Friday Roll! Tried similar rolls at other sushi restaurants, but they cannot satisfy my cravings for this roll which I get 99% of the time when I visit Kanji. I have tried Kanji's other special sushi rolls, but they always fall short when I compare it to Crazy Friday. My daughter likes to get the gyoza. Kanji Steakhouse Sushi doesn't really differentiate itself entirely away from typical hibachi style restaurants. Service was very good, as our waitress attended to us constantly and the food came out at a nice pace. Food-wise, we started off with a bowl of miso soup, kani salad and the rock shrimp appetizer. The miso soup was lukewarm, but tasted fine, while the kani salad had a lot of cucumber rather than imitation crab. The rock shrimp is piled into a fried wonton cup, which was nice, but there was nothing special about it. My boyfriend had the filet mignon and shrimp hibachi, while I had the NY strip and scallops. The hibachi plates came with plenty of food and tasted nice, but its nothing that separates itself from known hibachi places such as Shogun 22 or Benihana. Overall, the food was good; nothing special, the service was great and the ambiance of the restaurant itself is nice. I would recommend it for anyone as their first time to a hibachi restaurant or just to this restaurant in general. However, I doubt my boyfriend and I will drive back down here. read more

Since I moved to NJ I can't find a sushi place that wows me. Kanji so far has been one of the better restaurants for sushi that I have been to. The staff was very nice and on top of the ball. The decor is hip and up to date. I've had the live scallop appetizer a few times, as much as I enjoy it I think they use a little too much wasabi in the dish. The two rolls we gravitate to the most are the spring breeze and lobster rock & roll. The fish is always fresh, but the sushi on the whole is just good. I have never had their hibachi so I can't comment on that. Also it's a byob restaurant and there is a liquor store right outside so it's convenient. If your in the mood for sushi and in the area I would check it out. read more

The food here is so good I was amazed to find such high quality in a strip mall. We were directed here by a young kid who works here, One of my daughters friends. I was really amazed at the wonderful quality of ingredients and the creative manner in which they were presented. The proliferation of hibachi/sushi in the burbs has led to low quality offerings. Not here! Try the tuna tartar dumplings. I am craving them as I write. The crispy duck salad is a mouthwatering mix of tender baby lettuces crispy shredded duck and a mango light vinaigrette. Yummy! They handle special orders well too, like removing the ubiquitous mayonnaise based sauces that suburbanites who don't know Japanese food crave on everything!. EXCELLENT PLACE FOR SUSHI! I live about 10 mins from here and have never been to Kanji till recently. Now, it's the only place I'll go to. Fish is always fresh. I normally get the Love Boat, Sashimi dinner, and a few a la carte items for my family as take out. Never had a problem and all fish is very very good. Never had to question anything. Some places... sometimes... you eat something and you start to wonder, "how long has the fish been in the case?" I've ordered the same thing mentioned above 12 times since Dec '17... never a problem. Fish that has been with my order is normally never the same except for the usual such as the tuna and salmon. But I like that because that means the fish is always fresh and there is a high turn rate. Sometimes there's mackerel, sometimes skipjack, etc. Salmon roe is always very good as well and so is the eel. So if you are in the area and want very high quality sushi, give Kanji a try. read more

I've been going to Kanji since it opened. Both Roger and his wife Sue greated my wife and I by name. We were promply seated at the sushi bar where I usually sit. The waiter came over within seconds and quickly returned with our drinks (water and free green tea). She gets my "Waitress of the Year" for being so prompt refilling my drinks including the BYOB sake. I got the abalone appiitizer which is amazing. It's a combination of sliced abalone with three of Roger's great sauces accompanied by an abalone and "crab" salad. The salad used to be server in a real abalone shell but now it is presented in a simple glass bowl. My wife got oyster shooters which is five oysters with sauce served in shot glasses. We both loved these too. I ordered a Sashimi Deluxe and my wife gots the Two Thumbs Up Roll and spicy tuna and advocado roll. We substitue the brown sushi rice. The sashimi is always fresh but the variety doesn't include some sushi bar staples like ark shell (red clam), squid, surf clam, octopus or shiso leaves. I've had the hibachi a few times and it's about what you'd expect. I always feel like I'm being rushed at any hibachi grill so forget about ordering appetizers unless your party fills the entire grill. Roger has developed some amazing sauces for his dishes. I'd love it if he introduced some new flavors. read more

6 of us went to Kanji last night and got food poisoning. Were violently ill for 24 hours and throwing up. Called kanji to let them know we got sick and they didn't care at all. Wouldn't refund any of our meal and actually asked for a doctors note to prove we were sick. Don't go here unless you want to throw up and deal with rude customer service.
