So I have eaten at Kanki for years. This is always a monthly splurge for my wife and I. Tonight I saw something that floored me. For regulars, we know there is a 9 dollar share charge (which I do not agree with) for sharing a plate. It is not clearly printed (hibachI entries are on upper left page and share charge is fine print on bottom right). So there is two young ladies next to us (18-19 range) that ordered a chicken hibachi to share. We have always heard the waiter mention the charge when someone does but tonight he did not. Meal went on and then after a long time (waiter disappeared This was just multiple issues tonight and only appeared a couple times) he brings everyone the checks. The two young ladies looked floored and were discussing how they could pay for it since it was not discussed or budgeted. I asked the waiter if he could do anything since clearly this was not told to them but was told it was on the menu. I ended up paying for their meal because this is not how they should operate and have not in the past. I asked to speak with the manager who did not introduce themselves to which I showed them the menu and went over the scenario. I was told it was on the menu and they would take it up. At this point I spent a total of 140 tonight at Kanki but it will probably be my last. Anyone going be careful of the fine print since unlike other restaurants it's not clearly posted. read more

So for a Month straight my wife has been talking about going to kanki for her birthday which is today and that's all she wanted to do. So we get here with a 20 min wait which is normal and then we are seated. Our waiter is new which is fine bc he was doing a great job being that it was only his second day. Once the cook came out and was reading the orders some of them were wrong which we were trying to correct him but he had the nastiest attitude ever. So now that he has left we are now waiting for another cook. The table next to us was seated and had they cook with the majority of the food done before we even had a cook at our table. I'm extremely big on customer service being as though I'm in the food industry myself. The manager who we spoke to was awesome who was actually able to turn our lunch around because we was on the verge of walking out. Ordered sushi and tempura and chirashi. I was disappointed by the quality of sushi. Fish was dry and sad looking. The ikura looked fine but the flavor was off. The tempura was delicious tho and the dipping sauce I enjoyed. Skip the sushi and eat the hibachi. Definitely not worth the price for sushi. I made the leftover sushi into fried rice. It's a fun place to sit at the grill and watch the show. The food also is good, and the prices are reasonable. I've been coming here for 16 years, and I've never been disappointed. It's a great place for parties, special events, birthdays, etc. They have a separate sushi bar in front. Whenever I'm in town I come here religiously. The sushi is simply amazing! It's a little on the pricier side since it is tucked within the mall, but they also offer half rolls and lunch specials which do them justice. The hibachi is great also, but my favorite has to be either their Budokan or Sweet Dragon rolls. The fish always tastes super fresh compared to other sushi spots and the service is amazing every time. I would definitely recommend not going during the peak weekend evening times, because the wait does get a little crazy - even for the self seating sushi section. But even if you choose that route, this place is definitely worth the wait. My family and I have been coming to this Kanki for years, love love love it! read more

If you're at the mall and need a place to eat, do yourself a favor and hit the food court. From the rude host in front and the forgetful waiter, you'll regret sitting there watching the lazy cook toss your food around. He definitely did not want to be there! I picked up takeout food from Kanki last night, and I'm afraid I won't be doing that again. The gyoza and edamame appetizers were tasty, but the chicken in our entrees was dry and overcooked. My salad looked ok initially, but underneath there were pieces of decaying lettuce. Gross! read more

Certainly the communication with the customer is also very bad. 10/18/19 Friday's night we went to restaurant for dinner. One of the receptionist said 30 minutes for waiting. We said ok! But we waited 50 minutes, they couldn't manage waiting time, we decided to left, so reception workers just a grin our behind us when we left the restaurant. I sooooo wanted this Japanese experience to be awesome (white) sauce because Japanese is my absolute favorite AND it was my birthday dinner with my family. Well....it wasn't terrible but it was far, very far from awesome white sauce! The ambience was nice, even for a Saturday at 5:30 PM. We were seated before 6 PM and were immediately served. Our waitress seemed a bit annoyed/distracted from the start of our meal but we were not going to allow it to ruin our party! We placed our drink, appetizer and sushi orders. I ordered the South of the Border sushi roll. According to the menu, it was supposed to have tuna, avocado, fresh jalapeno and spicy mayo. I could see the tuna and avocado but there was no jalapeno and definitely no spicy mayo. My South of the Border roll lacked flavor and was lukewarm, which is not good when the roll is supposed to be cold. It was so flavorless the soy sauce didn't even jazz it up. My sister and I opted to order the Dinner for Two special (I believe it was the 45th Anniversary special) that was posted in the restaurant. It came with an appetizer (some extra spicy but yummers lettuce wraps), soup and salad, hibachi chicken, ribeye steak, and shrimp and dessert (Japanese sorbet). Let me just say the only reason I gave three stars was because our chef cooked all of our food to perfection! The steak literally melted in your mouth! All of the food cooked on the cooktop in front was flavorful. Now, the sauces that accompany the meal were not tasty! I kept to my usuals, a white sauce and a ginger sauce. The white sauce tasted bitter. The ginger sauce was decent. The hot sauce was pretty good! As I mentioned before, Japanese is my absolute favorite so I keep all of my sauces on deck at home. For that reason, I decided to box most of my delicious food to enjoy at home with good sauce! The dessert was odd looking (a small pink glazed ball) and tasted like Gogurt. My younger two nephews (2 and 10) loved it! Overall, if I was in a pinch and wanted Japanese while in the Triangle I might would return but I highly doubt that would ever be the case! read more

Came here twice now with Coworkers who are here with me on a project and both times food was on point. We have had the appetizers at the bar and they have been very good, Bar staff was nice and attentive. the real magic happens at the Hibachi grill tables in the back, both time the chef has been courteous and attent ive as well as the wait staff i tend to be a big water drinker and they can keep my glass full that is a feat in and of itself. Food was hot (obviously) but it was well seasoned and not over cooked which is ideal. IT IS A LOT OF FOOD so come HUNGRY and I mean HUNGRY. Love the food, the service, and everything else about this place. One of the best places in Raleigh to get Hibachi-style entrees. Dinner prices are a bit high at roughly $20+ per person but the deals are much better around lunchtime ($12+ per entree). I'm not a huge fan of sushi myself but my girlfriend loves their California rolls. I stick to the main entrees (steak kanki, shrimp, etc). Went here yesterday via recommendation from my friend who is a local to the area. My friend and I went and I ordered the business lunch with the three meat option as well as a Scottish roll. My friend ordered the yakisoba meal. First off the "Japanese" soup that came with my meal (which I was lead to assume was miso) was gross. A simple meat broth with scallions and believe it or not fried onions on the bottom. Why there were fried onions in my soup is beyond me. The salad was fine aside from the ginger dressing. Now regarding my actual meal, the chicken was overcooked, the shrimp were small, and my "medium rare" steak was an assortment of both rare and medium well. I even let my friend try some of the chicken and steak. The hibachi vegetables were overcooked and old as well. I didn't care for the Scottish roll either. The fillings were sparse and the roll itself just didn't taste good. Anyways, after we had paid for our food shortly thereafter we started experiencing excruciating abdominal pain, nausea, among other things. We later found out we had food poisoning which we believe came from the undercooked steak. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone and don't ever plan on returning. read more

Yummy experience for Saturday night birthday dining gathering with a 7 member group without reservations.... The family loves good Japanese steak house meals, including the 2 year old. Kanki had a 2 for $45 meal special that two of us in the party chose to get. That meal option included spicy lettuce wraps and a dessert in addition to the rib-eye, chicken and shrimp (yes a steal!). I ordered some onion rings for the group because we were ready to snack on something. The birthday girl ordered a half order of south of the border sushi rolls, they were not made correctly, but she still ate them. The sauce was missing. The onion rings were nice and crispy, the batter stayed on well, however they lacked flavor. The only real flavor came form the two sauces that were provided for dipping. The sweet tea was southern, the drink person made certain everybody glass was always topped off. The hot tea was decent and the lemons were real fresh. Back to the meal. The salad dressing options were very limited: 3 - Ginger, ranch, or house special sesame. the salad was rather hearty with carrots, tomatoes and large fresh pieces of iceberg lettuce. The soup was great, it was flavorful and serve at a perfect temperature. I normally get ta fish option at a Japanese steak house, but since I was doing the 2 for option, I am going out on a limb. Surprisingly, the rib-eye was rather tender (I did order medium temp) the shrimp and chicken were both well seasoned and good. I didn't care for the white sauce, it was a bit bland. The ginger sauce was pretty good, But didn't get either to go. The cook (JR) that we had at our table was very nice and attentive, he did a great job with everybody's steak temp request and portion sizes. Our only issue for the evening was our waitress (Kim) . She kept disappearing and we kept having to ask her several times for items. The young lady that was pouring the drinks kept helping her out, since it is a "group" tipping effort. Speaking of tipping, Kim had the audacity to come to the table as we were cashing out and reminded one of our guest that she had not included the tip and she did not see anything on his ticket. When we finally did get seated they gave us the crappiest seats. The only saving grace is the food, but I'd still say it's not worth all the crap you have to deal with. Although this is my favorite Japanese restaurant by far, the service is typically sub-par. If I'm shelling out an extra fifteen bucks for a tip I expect a little bit of acknowledgement, some drink, utensils, etc. I've probably eaten here a hundred times (no, that's not a hyperbole). The food is better than Japanese food I've had in Myrtle Beach, NYC, Greensboro, Greenville, and other places. Whether eating on the sushi side or grill side the food is good. It is slightly different, as someone mentioned. (The way it is cooked in the back including ingredients seems to change on the floor.) I absolutely love the sushi here though, and it is my favorite of anywhere. It helps to know I'm not a fish person so I get things with crab meat in them and am typically satisfied. The lunch portions are a lot smaller than dinner and if you're taking it to go it may not be enough; unlike dinner which can feed me 3-4 times! I really wish I got a sense of servers actually wanting to do their job. As a decent tipper, it honestly hurts my feelings when I don't feel like someone is worth what I'd planned to give them. Every single time I am back in town I have to visit Kanki. I consider hibachi my favorite food. That being said, I've definitely been to my fair share of hibachi restaurants. Kanki wins and will most likely remain number one on my book! Their white sauce, ginger dressing, and soup have not been matched anywhere else. Kanki for sushi is Eh! Nothing to write home about. Our servers tend to forget our drinks on the regular. The Hibachi is always a great time! We make it a special treat for us to visit their Hibachi. The performers are always engaging and smiling. Every now and then we may get a not so energetic performer. We all get bad days, I get it. I did appreciate they grouped couples and parties with others that can pair well. Example: Loud kids won't be paired with a honeymooners. That is smart! read more
