I stopped in on a quiet Tuesday late afternoon because I happened to be in Cary. I used to live in this area and wanted to revisit some of the places I've loved in the past, but got a hankering for sushi and found Yuri on Yelp. Located in a strip mall near Trader Joe's and Staples, Yuri is a bit hidden. When I walked in, however, it was like entering a Zen garden: low lighting, quiet, and austere. There were a few other patrons eating, and the hostess sat me at the table next to them. (Why? There were probably 20 other tables, but I have to be right next to the only other folks eating? I know it makes it easier for the wait staff, but is that your main concern, or is it making for a good dining experience?) A very nice, quiet server came almost as soon as I was seated and had opened the menu. I asked about food options and was guided through the menu organization, which is thorough and extensive. I decided not to opt for the sashimi that had caught my attention on Yelp, but instead ordered a few rolls - a Rainbow roll and a rice-free roll that is held together with cucumber strips. There's no WiFi, so I read email on my phone waiting for my food, which arrived in just a few minutes. The presentation was perfection! I loved how the chef used the seeded centers of the cucumbers as design pieces, since the larger roll had been covered with the outer flesh of this delicious vegetable. There were generous portions of fish in both rolls. The interior of the Rainbow roll was a minced fish mixture, instead of the traditional California roll ingredients (which the menu specifically stated). This made it a little more difficult to pick up and dip in soy sauce, but it was fairly tasty, nonetheless. The fish in the other roll was positively exploding out of the wrapper! I've never been to a place where so much fresh fish has been put into two rolls of this size. But there seemed to be something missing. There was no contrast to the fish. There were no sauces or garnishes used on the rolls. A dish of soy-type sauce was delivered with the meal, but the rolls, while tasty with fish, had no additional spices to enhance the flavors. Other than a little tang from the spicy mix in the Rainbow roll (which wasn't very spicy) and adding wasabi or soy sauce, there was not much going on. No fish roe, no sauces, etc. That cost a star. The server checked back several times, once just to make sure the afternoon sun wasn't making my table too warm. Not hovering, just checking in. After my neighbors left, another family was seated at the same table. I began to wonder if the other tables were actually functional, since no one was walking on that whole side of the restaurant. I understand seating folks by the window, in order to draw in foot traffic, but having to be so close to another two parties of diners, as well as the wait staff as they cleared the table, made for a less than ideal experience. I had a good experience at Yuri for lunch on the weekend. Yuri is tucked in a corner, between several other shops. The inside is very well decorated with multiple types of seating. Alongside the standard tables and bar seating, there were also more traditional mat seats that you could sit at. The menu was pretty expansive and had a lot of selection. We ordered 3 sushi rolls (speed, fire dragon, and seafood roll). All 3 rolls had very generous portion sizes and fresh cuts of fish. This was our first time going to Yuri (though we may have gotten takeout in the past). We don't have the prior owner / new owner experience, so my review is based purely on the restaurant under the new owner. The nigiri was amazing and the quality of the toro and otoro were on par with what we get at M Sushi and Akami. I am SO happy to have a restaurant close to us that has fatty tuna and salmon belly. We also dined with our 2 year old (who likes sushi) and did not experience the negativity some of the reviews here mentioned. She is generally well behaved in public, but of course had a few two year old moments (getting excited about the food). Would definitely recommend! read more

This is a casual restaurant which is great if you being small kids, like I did. The service is good and their food is yummy too! Our favorite is the Ahi Tower. It normally comes with crab but my hubby has a shellfish allergy so we got extra tuna in ours. It is so yummy! We also tried some rolls including the Mr. Miyagi roll. The rolls were very good. There is no better place for sushi in Raleigh. Sure, there are places out there that have Buy one get one rolls, but the quality and size of the fish is amazing. I've been coming to this place for at least 10 years. Service is always good. The place is clean and the staff is always friendly. I have tried many sushi places in the Triangle area. Some of them are almost as good as Yuri... Almost. That's why I keep coming back here. I just moved 35 minutes away from this restaurant. It's well worth the trip. Got here on Sunday at around 5 and the place was dead, barely anyone inside. Unfortunately looks like same was true for staff as service was very slow. But regardless, I went for a bento box with teriyaki scallops and for an appetizer we shared ahi tower, even though it's technically considered a specialty roll. Ahi tower was definitely a star of the table. Sushi rice, crab meat, spicy tuna, avocado are stacked in a pretty tall tower, topped with special sauce and surrounded with spicy Mayo and three types of caviar. Server offers you to scramble it for you or you can do it yourself. I loved the taste, loved the presentation. The only thing is, it's just too much mayo. I would probably cut the amount of mayo in half. It has bold flavor, it's spicy, and it's just too much and when you realize that it's already too late because the tower is scrambled and smothered in mayo at that point. That said I would definitely order it again and just ask for half mayo because otherwise it's phenomenal. Bento box was good but nothing to rave about. Scallops were in weird breading so I can't say I enjoyed them too much, taste was good but texture was what ruined it for me. I'd go for chicken or meat next time. Finally when we were done with food we sat there for close to 15 minutes until our server checked back on us. So yeah, it was probably not the very best dining experience, but overall I liked the food, staff was nice, and I also keep in mind that take out I tried in the past and enjoyed all of it. read more

I've been going to this restaurant for over ten years and it's definitely gone down hill with the new ownership/management. This is our third visit since the changeover and we won't be back. The teriyaki chicken used to be so tender. Now it looks like a piece of chicken grilled until no tenderness remains, then doused with teriyaki sauce. The sushi is still good, but doesn't taste as fresh as it did under Eddie's ownership. The previous owner could be grumpy, but he offered a much higher quality product and experience. read more

Not sure that Yuri has changed ownership or chefs, but our past two visits have been very disappointing. On our July visit after waiting almost 40 minutes for the lunch combination meals to be brought out and then finding them cold to the touch. ( we were a group 4 at that time when there were only two other couples in the restaurant) On our seconds visit which was this week our meals were again delayed even though we were only 2 of 4 people in the restaurant at the time. Tuna Nigiri was not chilled. When my lunch combo Tan Katsu / Shrimp Tempura arrived the Katsu was the consistency of fried pork rinds. We've been frequenting Yuri's for over 6 years and have never experienced such a drop in quality. I have been going to this restaurant for years and getting takeout. Today I spent $40 on 3 rolls and I'm confused about what exactly I received. Bag knotted closed. Soy sauce container on top-full-wrapped with Saran Wrap nearly. Each sushi container had an inch of water/soy sauce/milky brown liquid in it. How is this possible when bag stayed upright the whole time home, soysauce container on top still filled and not leaking? 1 roll which was the kani su, you could not even eat-supposed to be cucumber wrapped but it was floating in the brown liquid substance? 100% NOT KID FRIENDLY. My kids weren't even loud or obnoxious. The old man owner or manager told us that we were disrupting other customers when we were just sitting at our table waiting for our food. It was obvious he didn't like kids from walking through the door, so don't bring them here. We ended up leaving without eating. To respond to the business owner: You obviously didn't want us there from the beginning and you also didn't want to take the family behind us who had 1 child with them. My older children were seated and stayed seated at the table. My husband walked around with our 2 year old in his arms to get her to calm down as we waited. She barely made a peep and mostly went to watch the chefs making sushi. You have always been like this because I visited your establishment in 2019 and witnessed the same with another young family. And I am 100% okay with you being okay with losing my business. You just don't like kids, THAT'S OKAY. Just make it known that you would prefer your restaurant to be an ADULT ESTABLISHMENT. Was craving sushi after a long weekend and on my way back to Fayetteville decided to swing by Yuri. So glad I did as the sushi was fresh and fast. I got the Philadelphia roll and the butterfly roll. The Philly roll was nothing super special. But, the butterfly roll, wow! The butterfly roll was recommended by another customer that came to pick up her order. So wish I could thank her as it was such a great recommendation. The butterfly roll was fresh salmon stuffed with Crab Meat. It came with a side of spicy Mayo, wasabi Mayo, and Ponzu sauce. The spicy mayo and Wasabi mayo gave the salmon a nice pop and was so delicious. I could've kept eating more and more, but stopped myself and I was able to get another meal out of the butterfly roll. I definitely will be back and on a pay day as Yuri rolls especially the specialty ones do not come cheap, but it is worth it! read more

I searched for a sushi place on a whim, and came across so many, and decided on this one. I am beyond happy I found this gem! A little bit more pricey overall when we got the bill, but I don't even care. The food was amazing. Upon arrival, we were greeted by friendly staff and seated immediately. We ordered the Ahi tower, Dallas roll, fire dragon, crawfish dynamite, butterfly roll, and two cali's for our young children. My husband also got a beer. Our total was $112 before a tip. A bit higher than most places for that amount of food, but I'll pay for that quality. The Ahi tower alone, was the star. As it shows for decades now. I would come here just for that as lunch. It's top tier! Don't sleep on it! The Dallas roll and the fire dragon were good, but nothing out of ordinary for sushi. Super fresh and made great! What really stood out was the butterfly, the crawfish dynamite, and I'll mention again, the Ahi tower. Honestly some of the best sushi I have had in years. We were so sad to find out that Yuri has changed ownership and Eddie is no longer the owner/sushi chef. The sashimi is still fresh but the tuna was cut and presented differently . The soy sauce, tempura sauce and teriyaki sauces are all thicker and saltier now. The beef and salmon teriyaki was overcooked, the tempura coating was doughy and not as light as before. The serving sizes for sashimi and cooked meats are just a "smidgen" smaller to the naked eyes, but I could be wrong. We found out half way thru dinner and it all made sense why the last 2 visits in August were so different. I have been coming to Yuri since the week after they opened. When the original owner decided it was time to retire I was worried sick about the future of my favorite sushi spot of almost 15 years. There are always some hiccups when changing owners but the new owner is exceptionally receptive to feed back. If you are a regular and something was off recently, take some time to go back and reassess they are doing their best to maintain and build the brand that Yuri has always had. I've had Yuri bookmarked for a while and was glad I finally got the chance to go! My friend and I came for dinner on a weeknight. Service was friendly and food was great. I got the Ahi Tower, which was a beautiful and yummy tower of spicy tuna, crab meat, avocado, rice, caviar, spicy mayo, and sweet sauce. Although it was $16.95, the serving was pretty large. We also shared the Monkey Brain appetizer, which was breaded, deep-fried avocado stuffed with crabmeat and spicy tuna and served with salad greens. It was big enough to be eaten as an entree! We came here on the fly. We had no plans and had just wrapped up in Trader Joe's and we were starving. We came in around 8:45pm and we were the only table along with one or two others. Our waitress was the sweetest! She was so so nice and friendly. She was also super quick and the food was coming out very fast. We shared one Cary Parkway Roll and a Bento box. The Cary Parkway Roll was delicious (soft shell crab, eel, salmon, tuna, seaweed salad, and spicy Mayo/sweet sauce). It was a little heavy on the sauces but was very good! HORRIBLE PLACE! I tried ordering a kids teriyaki chicken for my daughter because we were eating at V Pizza (walking distance) and my 18 month old does not like pizza which I explained to them. They told me that they did not do kids to go orders. I asked why and they just said that they don't. They discriminate against kids I guess? How is that common sense? It actually makes no sense. If I ordered two adult plates and one kids you know damn well y'all would've sold it. But since y'all thought I was probably someone trying to get a kids meal to pay less then y'all didn't sell it. It's not common sense, it's y'all being greedy. If I told y'all to give me a kids plate and I'd pay adult price then y'all would've sold it. But it's ok.
