I've been here several times and it's always a fun experience. I've sat at the sushi bar each time but they also have regular restaurant seating and an area with hibachi style seating where you can cook your food right at your table! The coolest part about sitting at the sushi bar is that it is a flowing river with little boats of sushi rolling by. You get to pick different types to try as they come! You can also request specific rolls if you want to try something they haven't put out. The servers are usually friendly and give you tryout distance while you are eating and talking. So sometimes you may have to grab their attention if you need something. It's not the cheapest sushi place around but it isn't the most expensive either. I think the money is worth the experience and it puts you right in Mizner, downtown Boca Raton, so there is plenty to do and see within walking distance before or after dinner. read more

I visited Kanpai on Dec 1st and let me tell you, I loved it! Obviously we did the sushi bar with some saki! The place looked nice and clean which is a big plus for me! It's what I always look for. The waiter was great, stopped by every 5-10mins making sure we were okay and if we needed more drinks. With that being said, the reason why I am giving this place a 4 is because the food took so long to get back on the boats. We waited 30 minutes before having to cat the attention of the sushi chef to make us a something as we were starving and you can only have so much saki. Once we said something it seemed to come out every 10-15 minutes which was great. Now with the waiter, like I said he was amazing checking in on us but.... yes there's a bit, when it came time to get the check he just disappeared...for like 20 minutes. We had obligations to attend and he was no where to be found so I asked the host if he had left and forgot or if they could find him. She promptly apologized and went and got him, still took about 10 more minutes but eventually he came and quickly took our money as we told him we were now running late. Dinner here was the worst experience . I was burnt by price of corn that flew off the bbq and landed on my face. I was so lucky I wasn't blinded, so at this point I don't remember the food. It was overpriced, and the meat all tasted like nasty smoke, the BBQ didn't look like it had been clean for Months. The pork belly was just a few slices of trader joe bacon. The seafood pancake was wet and gooey, not crispy. Our waiter told us how he grilled things "back in Japan," but he is from Colombia and I think he was quite high. He forgot our drinks many times. I used to come here a lot with my friends during my undergraduate studies at FAU and remembered their happy hour was really good because they would always put fresh sushi on their rotating sushi bar. However, I recently came back to have a quick bite and I was very disappointed. I sat at the bar for 30 minutes and the and probably grabbed like 4 plates and the sushi chefs did not make one new roll. We eat at your restaurant/ order from about 1-2x a week and have been for the past few weeks. Despite having good food, you have been terrible in terms of customer service and preparing our to go orders. I have called to complain before and the manager does not take any complaints into consideration nor apologizes for mishaps with our orders. Today I called 5x and they refused to take our order over the phone. That being said, I was forced to order online and they were unable to even contact us when we went to pickup the order. The manager was unhelpful on the phone and the woman on the phone told me no car was outside of the restaurant. We were outside the whole time and they would not answer our calls when we were trying to pickup, nor our knocks on the door. I loved your restaurant as did my family but we will no longer be ordering from you again due to always have difficulties with our orders/ service. I hope this review gets to the owner as your food is good but you need to change management/ employee attitudes. read more

Make sure you keep track of how many plates you take or you'll be in for a big treat at the end! ========= I've been coming to Kanpai for years and have been a fan for a very long time. I've never tried the BBQ and have only ever sat at the sushi bar, which is really the highlight of eating here. The way the sushi bar works: you sit down and pick whatever small plates you want off the boats. Each plate is a different color, signifying the price. At the end, they take your plates and add up the price! If you go before 7PM, they have happy hour (order the garlic soy edamame!). On my most recent visit I realized that during happy hour, they send around all prices of plates on the sushi moat (whereas before, they only sent around the white $3 ones). I really enjoyed this because I was able to grab some of the less expensive things for $3 still, but also grab some $6 or $7 plates. My only complaint with Kanpai is how awful the parking situation is. There is NEVER any parking in the tiny lot behind the restaurant or any street parking. Typically, I'll have to park in a paid lot at the other end of the plaza. Sad! Also, there is no way to tell what roll is what so make sure you go with a sushi expert! read more

I will say I was disappointed to find out they DONT do the Japanese BBQ for lunch! Which is the whole reason we went there. I made a reservation thru open table which tells you to request a regular table or a bbq table. I originally came here for the Sushi on the floating boats but I came a bit too late so that idea was scratched. The environment is nice for a dinner with a date or even a big group of friends. Indoor and Outdoor seating available. Staff is sweet. I forgot my waitress' name but she was pretty nice. They're pretty kept busy so they hustle. We order a Lychee Dragonberry cocktail and it wasn't all that great. I didn't expect it to be so bitter. And the ice melted pretty fast so it was diluted early on. And the Amore cocktail, which is a mixture or purée berries. That was too bad. As for sushi, we ordered three rolls for the two of us and it was good. The avocado they used were a bit too ripe so it made the sushi roll mushy. Luckily only two of the three had avocado, and you can always pick it off anyways. But the fish was nice and fresh. Overall very good sushi. Rice consistency was good too and everyone knows I'm pretty anal when it comes to that. I definitely recommend the lobster crab Rangoon. Probably the best Rangoon I have ever had. I'll probably come back to try other things but maybe during lunch or something, because the price was pricey than others. read more

So I used to go here literally 3 times a week with my roommate. We always have had mediocre to bad service but we never cared because the sushi at the sushi bar was always a 10/10 and sooooo fresh. We'd sit by the rotating boats and pick and choose. So the service never bothered me because the sushi was always so good and the price was right. Especially at happy hour. Today I go and order take out. I got two rolls. A shrimp tempura and a Philadelphia roll. The shrimp tempura was okay but not fresh.... The philly roll was literally SPOILED. THE FISH WAS GREY. I took one bite and I literally gagged and had to spit it out. I am so beyond disappointed and mad. Update: I called to speak to the manager about this and I was refunded for my spoiled roll reluctantly. What a great place to have sushi. We had 6 people in our party and got two of the $49 sushi boats. The fish was fresh and sushi delicious. The real reason I went here was to try the conch and octopus salad. At first it looks like a small portion, but let me tell you, it was amazing. I must warn you, it has a little bit of spice, but it's the kind that scares you and then goes away quickly. A very good combination. I normally don't do this because I work in the service industry but my last time visiting was the worst experience and we've been eating here since it was called ninja 6 years ago. Their was 6 of us and it was my boyfriends birthday. We ordered the Korean BBQ combos and my friends ordered off the regular menu. Our drinks took at least 10 - 12 minutes every time we ordered. 2 of the drinks we ordered never even came and we had to ask twice where they were. My friend never received his food and the server never noticed. My other friend was missing her soup and we had to ask if that was ever coming out because I'm assuming it was never rang in. My boyfriends rice had plastic in it which we told our server and all he had to say was "sorry". We ordered combo A which comes with kimchi and the seaweed salad and we never got that nor did our server even notice we didn't get it. He was too busy SITTING down at another Korean bbq table across from us entertaining what we assumed was his friends from how comfortable he was. When I told him we never received the side dishes that came with the combo he once again said sorry. When he brought the bill 22% was already added and for missing food, having plastic in our rice and taking 10 minutes for a drink when it wasn't even busy is absolutely insane to me. To compensate for all his mistakes he brought over a free fried ice cream which was nice but when I'm spending $150 and they're is that many mistakes it didn't matter at that point. We asked for a manager and no one ever came over. Don't think we'll be back which is really sad because it was our favorite sushi spot. read more

Since we've been here with family before they suggested Kanpai again so we went for late night happy hour this past weekend. We were a group of 8. We got there around 11:45pm and the hostess flat out told us there were no tables! When the whole back of the restaurant was open and a few tables up front just needed to be cleared off!! She never said "sorry, we aren't seating anymore guests" or "just a few minutes till we get some tables cleared".... just flat out "there's no tables"... We literally looked at each other like what the hell is she talking about?!!? When we pointed out the open tables she just looked dumbfounded. Luckily, there was another hostess that had been working there for years who literally shoved the rude hostess out of the way to seat us. And lo and behold, there were tables to seat us. I'm pretty sure she knew exactly what the rude hostess was doing. Nonetheless, there were like 3 other tables that got seated after us. Go figure. "No table my ass." We told the new hostess about her behavior and she just apologized as if she knew. The restaurant is nice and the food is okay but they need to do a better job hiring people with good customer service skills! read more
