We had a good lunch here. Although at first it was a bit disconcerting -- the staff is Spanish not Asian. And we weren't sure about how our food would arrive. Not to worry as everything turned out fine. We had been to this shopping center on the west side of 441 for a number of other restaurants. There's parking near by and an easy walk to small restaurant. We came for lunch. There was a special lunch menu with a lot of choices on it. I got a shrimp stir fry. The dish came with a choice of soup or salad. I got their clear soup with mushrooms. It had some crunchy bits on top (garlic? Dried onions?) and was excellent. My stir fry had a lot of shrimp over a big pile of veggies along with a mound of white rice. The portion was large enough to have a lot of leftovers. My husband got one of their lunch sushi bar combos. His sushi and sashimi also had a half California roll, a fried gyoza, and a fried spring roll. He chose salad for his starter. The only unusual (strange?) part was their ginger dressing that he said tasted like it had ketchup in it. Otherwise, his meal was quite good. Again, another very large portion. In short: Service was fine. Staff was friendly. Portions were large. Food was good. Prices were quite reasonable for quantity. And yes, we'd go back. read more

I don't hang out in Boca often so I'm not confident recommending places to eat there. Sumo had good reviews across the board on multiple sites so I gave it a shot. It is a very low key spot hidden in the corner of a plaza. On a Friday night, the place was steady but not crowded, and we were able to sit at a table immediately. Reggae music played in the background while a cool breeze wafted in from the open door. Inside seating is quaint but they make good use of a small space. There were plenty of sushi rolls to choose from, and I was pleasantly surprised at the affordability of the prices, not at all up to the usual Boca price point. We started with a wahoo ceviche and a seaweed salad. Portions were quite large and I was glad I only ordered one roll for dinner as I was pretty stuffed by the end of the meal. The wahoo was ok, but I didn't feel like the fish was super fresh, but I did enjoy the seaweed salad - it wasn't drowning in sauce. I had the Jasmin roll which included Spicy tuna, avo and jalapenos, inside-out topped with seared salmon, masago, cilantro sauce, and kimchee sauce. It was supposed to have eel but they were kind enough to substitute it with more salmon instead per my request. I loved that the sauces on the roll were kept at a minimum as well as it defeats the purpose for me if I'm eating sushi and can't even taste the fish. It was beautifully presented and my husband and I were very satisfied with our experience. Looking forward to coming back for another chill date night to try out more of their menu. read more

Went to grab sushi with family tonight after picking Mom from the brightline station. Looking for something different for a change; we tried Sumo Sushi near Mission Bay. Going inside, there was a decent amount of seating inside, and no wait tonight. For dinner, we ordered 1x ginger salad, 1x fantasy roll, 1x saporo roll, and 1x some tempura shrimp roll. Moving on with my review, the food tonight was pretty tasty. For starters, the salad possessed fresh chopped greens/veggies and a vibrant tangy ginger dressing. As for the sushi, we found the rolls to be kinda pricey, HOWEVER, they were at least sumo size! In addition, the quality of the fish tonight was fresh & savory; and, each roll packed an unami punch. Moreover, our server was attentive and friendly. Overall, we had a pleasant evening at the Sumo Japanese restaurant as the sushi was plentiful and delicious. My final verdict would be a 4.5. This unassuming Japanese restaurant called Sumo is located near Glades Rd off 441 in Boca Raton. It is next to a ramen restaurant and Padrinos and has outdoor seating. It has an extensive menu including hibachi dishes. I decided to have the sushi/combination. The server who was very friendly and funny, asked which fish I liked the most. I thought it was just conversation and was expecting chefs choice. To my surprise the combination included my favorite fish. The pi fed were fresh and did NOT skimp on the serving. All delicious. . This was hands down the worst sushi experience I have ever had. Absolutely horrible and completely inedible. We ordered seven rolls to go, took one bite from each, and had to throw everything straight in the trash. The fish tasted off, the rice was wrong, and the overall flavor was disgusting. There was not a single roll that was even remotely acceptable. I honestly do not understand how people order from this place or how it is still in business. Sumo has been a sushi favorite of mine for over 10 years from living in Deerfield close to the other location off Hillsboro Blvd. Rudy , the owner, always takes care of me and makes my sushi special. My favorites include the Seven Pepper Tuna and the Spicy Tuna and Wahoo Ceviche. Service is very efficient and friendly, ambience is wonderful, and there is a nice sized sushi bar at both locations. Decent wine by the glass too. The Boca store has more inside seating and a nice outdoor patio. All is super clean. Rudy is also known for making all kinds of his special sushi sauces . Stopped by here because I was craving sushi. This is one of the better places around the local west Boca Raton area. The prices are pretty fair for the quality sushi that you get. I got the ocean roll and a JB roll here. Both were super yummy and came with some sort of sauce that was spicy. It was really good and I put it on the rolls instead haha. Very nice and extensive menu. I had the Sashimi appetizer, Nine pieces of sashimi (Chef's choice) of 3 different fish, very fresh and very good. Also the Spicy Tuna Ceviche, sliced red onions, jalapeño, cilantro, cherry tomato, diced tuna or wahoo with spicy citrus sauce, different and also very good. Bro... almost all the Spicy Tuna rolls I've had at other places have no kick at all. The Spicy Krab roll. Ahhhhh I'm so glad... why? Because most places don't even have this roll anymore... and that roll is like the gateway roll. It's the Bud Light of sushi rolls! I've been eating at Sumo for years! Way back when they started out in Deerfield Beach. Now that we moved out west I was thrilled to find they had a location near me. We always get the tuna ceviche. It is so delectable! It's like a Peruvian ceviche with a Japanese twist. I'm a huge fan of sunomono and Sumo does not disappoint! The portion size is huge! And as a bonus it's topped with wakame. The sushi is always fresh and chilled just right. T was our server tonight. He was very polite and gave us service with a genuine smile. Got my usual roll, Rudy Roll and I love that they always include that peanut sauce or whatever with their rolls because it's so good. I used to think it was for my rolls specifically because it comes ON it when you dine in, but it does in fact come with all of them. Who knew! What a total waste of money for sub par quality fish, preparation and choice of what they used! There were two that I wouldn't touch as I had no idea what was in my plate. I am a self identified Sushi Snob. With that said, LOVE SUMO! The staff is always friendly, the chefs are thoroughly trained in Japanese sushi technique as if their owner and head chef Rudy. I have never had a bad experience with food, service, takeout or otherwise. I notice that their ingredients are always fresh and prepared daily and it shows in the roll or whatever you order. The location if Deerfield is a small room but has outside seating while the location in Boca off 441, accommodates a larger seating area as well as outside seating. The tuna had a bland taste. It's very hard to describe, but it wasn't the normal fresh tuna sashimi taste we love. Salmon was fine. The worst part was the actual sushi. Very average rolls at best. Always a red flag when cream cheese is in a lot of rolls and only lobster tempura is an option (not fresh unfried lobster). Rice was dense and gummy. Rolls sliced awkwardly (some too thin so they fall apart and some super wide). Not nice even cuts like it's supposed to be. Servers were very nice but seemed overwhelmed. Sushi chefs also nice, but no gloves or masks on (not the end of the world, but helpful to know if you are sensitive to that). read more

Entrees were served steaming hot and plenty to eat. The chicken stir-fry was delicious with white rice, chicken and fresh vegetables including zucchini, broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, onions, peppers. The staff was attentive and very pleasant. Rap music playing was the only downfall. For a fabulous restaurant like this, rap is not a good choice, manager would be wise to change it. We ordered the maki roll lunch combo and a stirfry udon noodle with steak. Both were huge portions, fresh, made to order, and seasoned beautifully. Both came with complementary soup.
