When we first arrived, there weren't many people but the place seemed to have a nice ambience. We tried to take a family picture but the waiter refused claiming he was busy. Not great... We were then seated and we asked for drinks, wine which was promptly given to us and a mocktail which we didn't receive at all. We had a commitment after dinner and were hoping to quickly eat and then go. We waited for an hour for our appetizers to arrive. The waitress told us that they were very busy at the other more casual site, this excuse didn't seem to hold very strong as we had watched many other tables who had arrived AFTER us to receive their food. Our entrees were quickly given to us after the appetizers. The appetizers were good yet very small, a slight disappointment. Our entrees were very good! Ok. Here's the deal: the dining room is beautiful. The wine list is extensive and expensive. The kids menu has regular stuff (chicken fingers, burgers, fries) but also salmon and filet for reasonable prices (under $15). The appetizers are pretty good. We had the salmon spread, the braised short ribs, and the Brussels sprouts. The Brussels sprouts were overly charred, but the ones that weren't burned were delicious. The short ribs were great. The salmon spread was above average. The other food is way Way WAY over priced. Kid's salmon was good. Burger was perfect. All of the main courses had some kind of animal in them. One of the guests ordered a vegetarian option. It was an off-menu vegetarian stir fry.... which here means a big bowl of ramen noodles smothered in soy sauce and a couple of overly cooked vegetables abused by soy sauce. It was gross. There's a photo of it posted here. A couple of the kids ordered chicken fingers, which came out burned. The waitress agreed. They offered to replace them, which they did, but took so long (30 minutes) we let the kids go to the game room. When the waitress returned with 5 chicken tenders she saw the kids were gone and took it off the bill. They also took off their vegetarian soy sauce stir fry dish. The maitre d' was gracious and sweet. Our party of 7 was seated quickly. Otherwise, the staff was mostly inattentive. Here's what we suggest: go here, order some appetizers, have a glass of wine, enjoy the ambience, DO NOT ask for anything that isn't on the menu, do not order any of the main courses, when your wine is gone, leave and go get a proper dinner somewhere else. read more

The food was good. Service was good. Nice ambiance. However, I was rather disappointed when we were seated in the abandoned section of the restaurant by the fairly unpleasant host. When we asked if we could sit in a better seat, he said that could not be arranged. This seemed quite strange to me since there was barely a soul in the large restaurant at the time. There was not much of a view where we were (great views elsewhere) and nobody seated anywhere near us for the first 45 minutes of the meal. When we left, there were still empty tables in the heart of the restaurant, so we would have been done before it even filled up. If you are going there, I would ask about the seating when you make a reservation. If it sounds like you will be in the 'nosebleed' section, I would go elsewhere. read more

Every part of the meal was amazing. From wine to appetizers to entrees to side dishes to dessert! Wine specialist was a great touch and ended up with a perfect wine paired with dinner. Walking through the hotel to the restaurant was absolutely beautiful- so much attention paid to detail. I would definitely come back and recommend to anyone. read more

For what you're going to pay, absolutely not worth it. Too many places in Lake Placid are capable of serving up a delicious meal with beautiful ambience. While the Lodge itself is quintessential Adirondack that's about all I have to say. I came in with a party last night of myself and nine others for a family holiday gathering, and needless to say, we all left disappointed. In order: 1. No Riesling, no Moscato, terrible Cosmos at the bar 2. Server who was disinterested, at best, while serving our table. Only came around asking for drinks when we were initially seated. Wanted a glass of wine with your dinner? Too bad. 3. Holy limited menu. Probably a choice of seven appetizers and six entrees. I'm not picky, but it's nice to have options when you're out and spending 35-45 dollars a plate for your entree. Also, nothing was particularly impressive in terms of creativity. People at our table had the chicken (okay), venison stew (one of the stews only had four pieces of meat, but an entire carrot with the root still on), steak (marginal, with at least three of the six steaks full of gristle, and not at all tender, you could probably do better on a cut at Price Chopper), and the pork chop (I was probably the winner, it was good, not great, but good). 4. Dessert was a waste. We had two plates of the brownie ice cream sandwich and the cookie was dry, to the point where the texture was chalky. Overall, mediocre service, boring menu, poor execution. Pretty backdrop to take some pictures though. Would only ever be back if we heard they had either new management or a new chef. read more

This review is for Kanu restaurant, not the whiteface lodge. We stayed at the lodge (absolutely wonderful) and decided to eat here one night due to the freezing temps. It is VERY pricey. The portions are regular and the food is good (8/10) but there are so many other places in Lake Placid that can serve you the same and if not better food for 1/2 the price. Also, limited menu. The drinks next door at the lounge are unique and delicious and the bartenders are wonderful. read more

I don't mind paying for an excellent meal if it is superb. High priced meals have prime cuts of meat, creative food combinations, and quality staff. Our dinner did not meet these expectations. The lamb I ordered was tough and flavorless. My husband's New York strip steak was full of gristle, my friend's chicken was under cooked and had to be returned to the kitchen. The wait staff was kind but loud when gathered together near the serving area. The rustic setting was beautiful, the grounds were spectacular, the views were lovely, but not worth the $$$ cost at all. read more

You can't beat the atmosphere of the Whiteface Lodge, it's stunning. But when you are paying a lot of money for dining at Kanu, you except service to match it. Our appetizers were tasty (Brussels sprouts and a Caesar salad) which is the only reason I didn't give this a single star, but our entrees took an hour and the resturant wasn't even half full. After the wait, to finally get our dinners and have them less than mediocre was a serious disappointment. I recommend eating at the lounge across the way because Kanu is nothing to write home about. read more

Have been going to this restaurant intermittently over the last ten years. This most recent visit was incredibly disappointing. Ordered steak that was too thin and overdone for medium. Ordered brussel sprouts that were undercooked and tough. The sommelier was very attentive and ensured that we had a good bottle of wine. Very thankful for that as our food was so far below average. Server chatting casually/personal conversation with neighboring table while we waited to order; was generally inattentive. Veggie burger inedible - just ate the tomatoes and pickles. Lettuce consisted of very wilted old greens - again, totally inedible. When ordering, we had specifically requested that the fries be crispy - they were not at all, but ate then anyway because we were hungry (see above: burger inedible). Served with annoying little bottles of ketchup and mustard that were sealed/unopened; we had to use our teeth and table knives (literally) to open, while food was getting cold. Mussels were small and tasteless, and broth was salty; not served with crostini, usually used to sop up good broth (which was not the case anyway). 'Molten' chocolate dessert was not at all 'molten' - it was hard and dry - again, extremely disappointing. Staying for a week but will eat elsewhere. read more

Sat in the lounge for a few apps and drinks. The bartender, or "liquid chef", Zach was amazing! Made me a fantastic customized cocktail just by asking me a few fun questions based upon my taste selection. Knocked it out of the park! My husband and I shared 2 apps, the flat bread & tacos which were both good but not out of this world and we each had a cup of green chili & chicken soup (definitely hit the spot on a cold rainy night!). read more

The building was the most impressive part of the meal, which was no where close to its price point. For a resort that charges so much for accommodation i would have thought that the restaurant would have been better. We ate on a Thursday evening and there were only a few people dining, despite this the service was poor. We waited a long time to order drinks and dinner and then waited a long time for the drinks. The timing of the delivery of the food was less than ideal. The food its self was good, but there is no scenario that i can conceive where the cost was justified. Save your money and eat at one of the places downtown, at least you can have a view of the lake. read more

We ate here during our weekend away in Lake Placid, assuming this would be the highlight meal of our trip. The decor of the restaurant was really incredible and impressive. That was about it. We were seated right next to a couple with a 6 months old baby, who cried/whimpered and crawled around on the floor around the tables the entire time. The waitstaff accidentally brought someone else's food over to us before realizing they were at the wrong table. We both ordered caeser salads, they were good and actually a fairly large portion. I ordered the haddock, it was dry, overcooked and bland. The beurre blanc sauce came in a little pot that was to be poured over the fish, it was thin, bland and unremarkable. The asparagus was large and in season but undercooked and bland. The mashed potatoes were by far the best part of my meal and were tasty. My husband ordered a steak, medium rare with the chive butter. The butter came on top of the steak with a piece of wax paper that had accidentally not been removed still stuck to it. The steak was over cooked and not even a great cut of meat. The side of sweet corn was the best part of his meal. Overall the restaurant was overrated, disappointing and comparable to what I'd expect for quality and taste at a holiday inn restaurant. read more

This is an outstanding restaurant. It has a beautiful log interior, Adirondack style, of course. The service is excellent (I counted five different people tending to me), food was very nicely presented and perfectly prepared, and the wine list was well thought out, managed by an on-site sommelier, with a good by-the-glass list and also a good half bottle selection, as well a fairly comprehensive selection of surprisingly affordable Bordeaux wines. My family and I visited Kanu the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. The setting was nice. The waiter and service were good. For 730pm though it was pretty much empty and I now understand why. The food was very good (pork, chicken, halibut) but very expensive for what is was. The pork was cooked perfectly but was just arranged on a few diced sweet potatoes. The menu said that it was also served with brussel sprouts but they were not on the plate. Nothing was substituted. For $36 I thought this was unacceptable. Scallop appetizer was good but $16 for 2 average size scallops. My guess is that they don't get many repeat customers. The meal for 5 people (no drinks, 3 appetizers, no dessert) including tip was $275. We have spent that much on meals before and have never felt the disappointment that we did after Kanu. We would not return except maybe to Kanu lounge across the lobby where the menu looked good and the prices reasonable. read more
