My issue is the way I was treated on my last visit by his assistant after it became apparent to her that I would not be buying frames or lenses from the practice. Her attitude immediately changed when I asked for a prescription. She stood up, went to ring up my copayment, and when she returned with the prescription she remained standing and was abrupt with me when I asked her to explain the change in my prescription, which was in a format I was not familiar with based on what I received in prior visits. I'm an educated person who wants to know how things work and what numbers actually mean, not merely to be told that "any qualified optician will understand" the prescription. I was made to feel stupid and like I was an imposition so I left and fed the prescription into ChatGPT which politely explained it to me, including how a progressive prescription can be translated into single vision distance and reading prescriptions, and what the numbers mean. AI was more polite and patient with me than the assistant. Despite having no issues with the doctor himself, I will not be returning to this practice in the future. The barriers between patients and medical information are evaporating due to AI. Doctors would be well advised to ensure that they and their staffs at least match the courtesy of ChatGPT. Update: In response to Dr. Glasser's comment, all I can say is that it would have taken his assistant less than a minute to sit down and politely explain to me the meaning of the numbers. Regardless of whether I'm dealing with an optometrist or a cardiologist, I take it upon myself to gain a thorough understanding of my heath, which is what ChatGPT provided and the assistant did not. If the doctor doesn't want to take constructive feedback on such a simple point, then I suppose that my decision to go elsewhere is the right one.

I started having some…read moresymptoms like dryness and blurriness on Monday, which I thought would get better with some moisturizing drops and rest. By Wednesday morning, it had only gotten worse, and Dr. Lobaugh had a same-day appointment open so I could get in to get checked out. He and his intern were extremely thorough in examining my eyes to see if they could sort out what was going on and found I had a tiny abrasion in the center of my cornea that showed signs of getting infected. I got started on antibiotic drops and quickly started improving, and by a Friday follow-up, my vision was almost back to normal. Unfortunately, I lost my eye drops at some point going to and from the appointment! Michelle and Dr. Lobaugh were quick to check the office for them and then get a new prescription out so I could replace them. Michelle in particular was super responsive, and I felt very reassured as I was anxious to stay on time with my doses. I really couldn't recommend the team highly enough based on this experience! It was clear the team is more than just standard optometrists that can help you with glasses and contacts - coming from someone that doesn't need that side of eye care, they definitely know about eye health in general as well and want to make sure that you keep good vision when you have it!

Four visits, countless hours, repetitive tests, numerous charges, and a lot of waiting around to see the doctor, I ended up with contacts that seemed to be the wrong prescription, then contacts that didn't fit and dried out. Nevertheless, I thought I'd give it one more try. On my fourth (most recent and definitely last) visit, I walked out after more than half an hour of being told I'd have to repeat tests I'd just had a couple months ago and wait another half hour to even see Dr. Teller. I was looking for somewhere else and came across Metropolitan Óptical on Zocdoc. The staff was incredibly friendly. I was greeted as soon as I arrived. I came pretty early, but they made sure that I got my tests out of the way early and then I saw the doctor. My appointment was quick and efficient, but I also learned things about my eys that I hadn't known before. I also have a lot of anxiety with my eye, but they helped me breathe through the various tests that often are a challenge for me. Every staff member I interacted with was fantastic. I found Dr. Amy Green-Simms on ZocDoc. I arrived for the appointment on time, and filled out paperwork. Waited. And waited. 50 minutes later, I went back up to the front to check on the status...because 50 minutes? The person who had checked me in, taken my license, etc., said, What's the last name? (Guess too much time had passed for her to remember.) An assistant magically wound up calling me back a few minutes later. The assistant did a vision exam (?) then told me to sit back down /that the doctor would call me back shortly. I sat, and I waited. And I waited. Watched a man who arrived after me be taken back. Then another. Another half hour passed, and I asked assistant for an update. She said, "Yeah, I'm just not sure what's going on. Maybe she has something." (?What does that even mean?) "I can try to squeeze you in." Um. What? I asked, "Why would you need to squeeze me in exactly, when I had an appointment?" She looked at me and said, "Oh, yeah, I don't know." She took me in an exam room and said she'd try to find out what was taking so long. Finally, the doctor comes in. She was super condescending, but did apologize for the wait, so there was that. She explained there had been an emergency. I just wish that had been communicated to prevent the serious frustration with the wait time. Eventually, she pulled out her prescription pad, and wrote something down. She then explained what she was writing: for me to take Ibuprofen. Wowwww. Um. My eye had been red for 4 days. It was painful. I take Advil on a daily basis sometimes, to help with migraines, and clearly it had not been helping my eye. Hadn't planned to do so, but brought up that I'd consulted an eye doctor friend in another city, who told me I'd likely need prescription drops. She laughed, and said, oh, I wouldn't recommend that. Smiling, she continued, the drops I'd prescribe can cause glaucoma AND cataracts, and I'd need to see you back here immediately. Stick with the Ibuprofen. I explained the two conditions my friend had mentioned, and she said, yeah I think it's one of those, too. ??? I insisted on receiving a prescription for the drops, in case they were needed. She finally agreed to send one to a pharmacy, but basically instructed me to absolutely not fill it, because the side effects would be too much for me to handle. I walked out of the room in disbelief over what time it was, and what had just happened. I went to check out, and the employee told me the amount I was being charged. I looked at him, and explained I'd been there almost 2 hours....to receive a prescription for Ibuprofen. He looked at me, and looked at my eye, in shock, like, ARE YOU KIDDING? And I said, Seriously. And showed him the prescription. He went to check with the office manager to see if there was anything that could be done, because he agreed that it seemed ridiculous. The office manager took her time (cool, it's not like I'd been waiting all day or anything), then finally came out and said she'd need to talk with the doctor. They had someone else call me, who was the least understanding person I've ever dealt with from a doctor's office. She had zero response when I explained what happened, except to repeat that the office manager had spoken to the doctor, and that the charge was correct. Eventually, she added, not only was the charge correct, but I SHOULD'VE been charged x amount more. I'm sorry. Seriously? Not helpful. Not understanding. Not okay. I asked if there was anyone else I could talk to about this, because even just a slight adjustment would be SOMETHING -- even an understanding employee would be SOMETHING -- and she simply said, No. This is the first time ZocDoc has let me down. I do not recommend this doctor.

He had a flat affect and set a negative stage. I said I prob need more than a routine eye exam but was happy to start w that. He lmk that a dry eye test isn't covered by ins (which is fine) and not to expect that I could do both in one visit (also fine). He then said, the appt will be 15 min tops, so it's not a time to ask questions. I said, of course I want to be able to ask a couple questions, espec bc of eye irritation lately. He said, "I see your insurance is (x) and that only pays us like $60 per visit. We can't give patients longer than 15, we'd go out of business" (!) I couldn't believe it. The rudeness and the gall of mentioning my coverage resulted in poor profit for them. I suggested he NOT say those things to new or returning patients and he said he was trying to manage expectations, that patients "always complain" they want to be seen longer but it's not doable. Talk about poor patient relations/ customer service. I realize what the medical system is up against w insurance is rough, but never has a public-facing clinic employee been so dissuading about the care their provider provides. I can't NOT recommend this place enough; take your business to an office that will value it.
