This used to be a tightly run shop with a good doctor, but alas both of those things are no longer true. Those days are gone, they're under new management and have a new doctor. Had an appointment today and was made to wait 60 minutes (I arrived 10 minutes early which is customary) and still no doctor, no one even told me how much longer I'd have to wait and the store was empty too, so I just walked out. 5 staff members and absolutely no one could be bothered to tell me there was a delay or how much longer I'd have to wait. At one point the doctor popped out of her office and joked about "vibes" with the staff, didn't even acknowledge I was there, it was the only time I actually saw her. One of my neighbors relayed to me she had experienced the same thing, seems like it's the new trend there, better to avoid it altogether. read more

I would've given this visit 5 stars, but I seriously have never felt more pressured to make a purchase when I was checking out. I have had glasses and do a job of getting my eyes checked every year. Ive been to this location before and since it's close distance to work, I decided to give them a call. I was able to schedule a same day appointment which was fantastic! Now as I got in, I was welcomed by the staff and was then taken care of immediately. I was in and out in under an hour. My complaint. I know it's good for an employee to make a sale, but I turned it down and the lady who was taking care of me was insisting on me buying glasses. I told her I have glasses and I would just get the lenses changed and she still pressed on me to buy. I have never felt more uncomfortable in my life. When I kept turning her down, she kept insisting "oh this will be a good deal." Even told me I could pay half if that's what I could only afford right there. I'm sorry, but staff or she needs better training and learn how to accept when she gets turned down by a patient. I honestly didn't like how I was treated and fortunately this is not the only location in the area. read more

The optometrists change with the seasons and so does the staff. Nobody wants to work here. You'll get just an average look over and a prescription, and then they push you to buy hugely marked up glasses and contacts. This is a chain, and it shows. read more

Dr. Balano fresh, young professional with old school manners. The staff leaves a little something to be desired. Trey(?) was very vocal with his coworker about the Keto diet but I called into to verify my order he was less than enthusiastic, placed me on hold and never cam back. When I called back over an hour later when I asked his name he softly apologized for getting busy helping the doctor and in store clients. Yeah. Ok. Turns out contrary to being informed I could just call in, I need to come in for measuring. And this couldn't be done yesterday, why??? I'll try not to hold that against them mostly getting the job done. But they are skating on very thin ice. Approaching 50 years old with no prior vision issues. I've heard horror stories from other family members so I went in expecting the best, prepared for the worst and would settle for something in between. I was in/out quickly. They have a decent selection of lenses to choose from and they are accessible! Now that I'm newly in the market for glasses glad I found somewhere fairly decent my first attempt! Please read the reviews about this place before going there, I know I should have. If you like being treated like crap for no reason and paying for a terrible service (it actually feels like they think they're doing you a favor), then this is your spot. Otherwise, you'd be crazy to trust these people with your eyes. -- Front desk lady asks me if there are changes to my address and insurance. I say yes and am ready to give her the new info. This inconveniences her because it means she'd actually have to get some work done instead of doing nothing. She quickly says there's no need to change anything, she has all my info on the computer. I repeat I have an address change. She's further inconvenienced (how dare I require she make that change). I confront her about her manners with me and ask her to explain why she's hesitant to make the address change. At this point, a guy comes into the small room we're in, gets closer to me than I would have liked him to, and says he's "the doctor" and that he thought I was creating a bigger problem than it really was. Yes, "the doctor" actually said that to his customer. Weird interaction, weird assessment of the situation. I said "I'm leaving this place right now". I have been happier ever since. read more

I WANTED everything to be better; truth is it wasn't. I wanted to give them a fourth chance, but it proved to be a poor decision. The last set of management worked hard to rectify a bad situation, but in the end, everything failed miserably. Here's Why: 1) Management revolves more than a revolving door, rendering any type of care consistency impossible. 2) I don't know how to stress this enough, but THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING. I went back twice to try and fix my prescription, and it didn't work! It took going to another doctor to realize they were off by -.25/-.50 in either eye AND THEY MISSED MY ASTIGMATISM. They convinced me I didn't need two different prescriptions!!! I'm really upset that the laziness of two optometrists convinced me it wasn't a big deal and that I only needed one prescription for my eyes despite glaring evidence supporting otherwise. 3) Their inability to fit you properly for frames is astounding. After my first set of frames BROKE from them trying to adjust them on a weekly basis (because they didn't fit), they re-ordered the same set! At that point just own up to your mistake and order smaller frames that actually fit so I won't have to come in to have them molded back on a weekly basis! Bottom line: Just AWFUL. Save yourself the headaches (figuratively and literally) and go to optometrist that actually know what they're doing. Thank goodness for Eye Rx in Chevy Chase! See my review on them! read more

My experience at this location started off nicely then quickly went downhill after I expressed disinterest in purchasing frames or contact lenses. I scheduled my appointment a week in advance with Casey. He was the only person in the store that day and he was very personable and allowed me to check out the selection of frames and try on a few. I arrived for my appointment a week later. This time the air in the store felt different. There was an irate customer at the counter expressing her discontent at expecting to pay $99 for an exam and instead being charged close to $200. The store is small and there's no private customer consultation area so I was was able to hear and witness the entire dispute while observing the condescending remarks and eye rolls from the employees as they dealt with the customer. I should have just walked out; however, I didn't think this would be my fate. Also, I needed to get my eyes examined so that I could reorder contact lenses online. My exam went smoothly. Doctor Bae-Li was very pleasant and thorough. After my exam, she walked me to the eyeglass counter to meet with the lady in charge of frames. I wasn't particularly interested in getting frames on this day; however, I tried on a few. The representative gave me some helpful suggestions on frames that fit my face, but ultimately, I wasn't in love with any of the frames I tried on so I told her I just wanted my prescription and that I was ready to settle my bill. She tried to convince me to order contact lenses through the store, but I knew that I could get a cheaper price online and told her no thanks. She then tried to hard sell me by pointing out that some online contact lens places aren't reputable and that contact lenses expire -- all things that I'm aware of and very educated about. I explained to her that I've purchased contact lenses from a reputable company certified by the Better Business Bureau for years and that my lenses don't expire for another two years. She finally relented and brought me the bill when she realized the sales pitch wasn't working on me. The bill came out to over $100 and I nearly fainted. This price was way more than I expected to pay. I mentioned this to the lady and asked her to walk through my insurance benefits to see if I could get any additional discounts. At this point, her voice started getting a little louder and I had a quick flashback to the scene with the irate customer when I had just walked in. It definitely felt a bit uncomfortable having other customers eyeing my conversation; however, I know the price was way more than I normally pay for an eye exam elsewhere so I stood my ground. Eventually, Casey came over and offered me a discount on the bill, which brought the price down significantly. I paid and left and resolved to never step foot in this store again. read more

I have been coming here for years, since it was Spex, and now My Eye Dr...i have always been satisfied, but this last time I was charged $1400 out of pocket vs the usual 700-800 range. .i called my insurer to find out the discount offered on my frames negated the insurance coverage because the frames were discounted by my eye Dr by 10%...i was never told that this discount would disqualify me from the usual insurance coverage and cost me a ton more money. I cancelled the glasses and was told the credit would take 2-4 weeks...seems illegal read more

While I didn't do much research into this business or this particular location when I switched eye care providers three years ago, I've been extremely pleased with the service I've received in the intervening years. MyEyeDr. accepts my insurance and is conveniently located a short walk from both the Friendship Heights Metro and my condo. I have a wide face, and I've always had trouble finding glasses that I feel fit my facial structure and enhance my features. The staff at this location have always made me feel like part of the family (i.e., they always remember my name and we talk about things happening in my life), and I always walk out with glasses that I love at prices that I feel comfortable paying. For these reasons, I recommend Dr. Goodman and his staff. read more

$500.00 bill for a $35.00 Groupon on deal?!! 100% ripped off with my experience here. The sales people only "recommend" the most expensive frames in the store which start north of $280.00, and the lenses are $250+ ... so when the final price was quoted...you will have no idea what you're actually going to be paying, nor will you know if the discounts were even applied because the bill is so high. They constantly bring out an arm full of frames to prevent you from looking at anything cheaper, and they don't listen to you when you tell them what you're looking for. They ignore what you tell them and continuously push random expensive frames in your face. I ended up buying a pair of frames, then decided to cancel shortly after and they told me THEY COULDN'T REFUND MY MONEY??? I haven't felt so swindled this much since I bought my last car. I called the MyEyeDr Customer service and I get a VOICE MAIL!? I called several times a day, for 4 days straight and no answer, no returned calls! I had to back-charge my credit card to get my money back because they wouldn't even bother talking to me once they had my money. Would that make this place a scam? I'd say so! Do yourself a favor, AVOID this place. I ended up going to WarbyParker.com where they mail you 5 pairs to try out for 5 days (free). And the glasses are only $95.00 with a much better selection and a nice 30 day return policy. Customer service counts in 2012, and MyEyeDr doesn't have any. After a year of hassle, I definitely regret my previous review. I am not sure if their personnel or policies changed, but I will definitely not be returning. First, I tried to order contacts through 1-800-Contacts, and this office told them they had no record of me as a patient. 1-800-Contacts was significantly less expensive. Second, when I decided it wasn't worth the hassle to try to force them to give 1-800-Contacts my prescription, I ordered through them. My contacts arrived, but with no itemized receipt so I had no way to submit the cost through My FSA. I had to call 4 times to get someone to mail me an itemized receipt, it would have been very inconvenient to drive to their office. Third, I lost a box of contact during a move, and I tried to call to get a replacement pair exactly 32 days after my annual eye exam was due. Not only was the receptionist extremely rude, and I mean extremely, she actually said multiple times they do not carry my contacts in stock. Really? Then why do they send you home after an exam wearing a new pair? Every eye doctor I've been to previously understands that things happen, you may need an extra pair in a crunch, and oh by the way - IT IS BS THAT YOU NEED A NEW PRESCRIPTION EVERY YEAR! To be fair, maybe Maryland has different laws, but neither VA nor DC requires this. However the most egregious issue is that I think this franchise pedals a certain brand of lenses, that oh by the way - suck. I've known four people to go, and they were all told that their current brand was really outdated, and to try this other brand. This seriously makes me wonder if there is a marketing/sales kick-back from My Eye Dr. to this particular brand of contacts (which I don't have the name of because I lost the box and apparently they have NONE in their store). Four people + me, all in the same brand? Hmmmm. Might be convenient in the short term, but definitely highly unsatisfactory customer service in the long term. I will trade the up-front convenience for a company that actually cares whether or not you can see. read more

Add our family to the list of dissatisfied customers. Short version: my husband went here for an eye exam because they are participating providers under our insurance plan. They submitted a claim to our vision insurance, and required a copay of $47, although exams are fully covered under our policy, with a copay of $20. We were not provided an itemized receipt, and despite four requests (including one to the customer service email address provided in several of the responses below), they have *still* not provided an itemized receipt. Atmosphere wasn't that friendly. Exam was really quick, they seemed surprised that I had insurance(?!) The Doctor was really nice but the staff seemed like they wanted to sell, sell, sell those expensive frames. The doctor said that I would be disappointing the staff because I wanted my px to go purchase cheaper frames. I do feel that the doctor was competent and professional but the staff seemed funky. I have been going to My Eye Dr. in Alexandria for the past two years. So, when I had an eye emergency (red, itchy eyes), I called to make an appointment. I was visiting my parents, and couldn't make it back to Alexandria in time. I called the Chevy Chase location and they were able to fit me in. They were really flexible and accommodating with my schedule. When I showed up, I immediately felt better. The staff was concerned with my issue, I was able to get through my paperwork quickly, and the doctor (Dr. Shoter) was efficient and friendly and knowledgeable. I was scheduled for a follow-up appointment the next day, and when I arrived, a few staff members asked how my condition was. The doctor welcomed me back, and gave me a prescription. The drops he had given me the day before worked wonders. I decided to look at glasses after my appointment, and the staff was extra helpful. Unlike the staff at the Alexandria location, the Chevy Chase sales team was friendly, not pushy. They even gave me a great deal on two frames. I haven't received my glasses yet, but my red, itchy eyes are much better - and overall, I had a great experience. Prior to this, I was considering switching from My Eye Dr. (simply because of the staff at the Alexandria location - doctors not included). But in the future, if I am looking to purchase glasses, have another emergency, or simply need a routine check-up, I will drive the extra 30 minutes to Chevy Chase. If you are currently a My Eye Dr. patient, I would definitely recommend this location. read more

What a help! We picked up my sons glasses and after that asked whether they could help with my wife's scratched lens. Sally analyzed it and then helped us for an hour, getting a prescription emailed to us, calling all over town to find someone who could grind a progressive lens in a day, before we flew out. Eventually, Sally asked the right questions of a place in a small town not far from where we would be staying -- just what we needed. This was all out of the goodness of her heart. My husband and I actually had a great experience here. The eye doctor was very thorough and found my retinal tear repair scars on his own (they are very difficult to see without dilation) and then recommended a retinal specialist for a check-up. Sales people in these types of stores are always going to be a little pushy and I hate that you always end up feeling like other people got better deals but that's the nature of these eye doc chains. I got an eye exam, contact lens exam, contacts and a pair of glasses at this location. Everyone in the office was very nice and helpful. I wasnt originally going to buy new glasses so my visit was longer than expected but Olga was very patient and did not rush me in picking glasses. I saw Dr. Ross Shoter for my exam and he was excellent; he was very thorough and took the time to explain the retinal photos I had done. When I had to switch contact lenses he went out of his way to have them sent to me directly to save me an office visit. Additionally this location beat the prices you will get from 1-800 Contacts. I can't say enough about the service that I had with Jason. He was incredibly expert at helping me with my sunglasses because I have a high degree of light sensitivity. He suggested making a significant change in them to accommodate my problem, without my asking. The staff was courteous and professional. I had to reschedule twice because of my work schedule and they were very accommodating. I had an appt Saturday morning for an annual eye exam and contact lens exam. Everything was finished within the hour but didn't feel rushed. Today, I had my annual eye exam at My Eye Dr. Chevy Chase. The staff were pleasant and courteuos, and I was in and out in no time at all. In fact, when I was having difficulty selecting an eye glass frame all the staff (including the receptionist) pitched in with their commentary which was very helpful. However, when I reviewed by itemized bill I had been charged for a product that had not been discussed with me. When I called the store and challenged this, I was told that I was right, they should have discussed it with me first but they thought that since I have included a special coating on the lenses of by last glasses, that they should add it this time too. I am writing this review, because I will receive a free pair o f sunglasses from My Eye Dr for doing so. I had an extremely positive experience here. I was in need of my annual eye exam and a new pair of glasses, so I went to this MyEyeDr. because it was convenient and close to my office. I was wary of going to this location because of the low Yelp rating, but I can confidently say that I have no regrets. The minute I walked into the store, I was greeted with friendly staff and asked if I wanted to bump up my appointment to an earlier time since my initial appointment wasn't for a few hours. I got in to see the doctor right away, and walked out of the office with a new pair of glasses 45 minutes later. I ended up going in again to exchange my glasses for another pair, and then another time to get my glasses re-sized. Both times, I saw the same gentleman who helped me the first time, and he immediately recognized me when I walked in. I am 100% satisfied with my glasses now, thanks to the patient and friendly staff who was eager to make sure I walked away feeling content. I will definitely be using this MyEyeDr. for my future eye needs. read more

Had a very unpleasant experience there with 2 of the 3 staff. Went to have a new pair of glasses fitted. Purchased them at another My Eye Dr location. I've been wearing glasses for 35 years so am very clear on how I need them to fit. The person assisting me was rude and sullen. She behaved as if I was really inconveniencing her to,do jer job. She didn't listen,to my needs. and I need to take them elsewhere to be properly fitted. With millions out of work, its terrible to see a gainfully employed person behave this way. The manager of this location needs to take a hard look at its employees and evaluate their customer service skills. The woman I had to deal with today has NONE. read more

I was hesitant to go to this location after reading some of these reviews but I was completely blown away! The receptionist was so warm and nice. Knowing I was a first-time customer, she walked me through all the paperwork. She even did some preliminary testing on my eyes and explained everything that was about to happen so I'd know what to expect. I had virtually no wait time but, while I did wait, Manuel, the eye wear specialist, asked me what I was looking for in terms of eye wear. I had mainly gone in to renew my contact prescription but was interested in finding a new pair of glasses as well (my old pair are from high school...Yikes!). He gave me a couple suggestions and even gave helpful advice about which pair worked best for me. Even when I ended up not purchasing the glasses, he was very kind and made note of the pair I liked in case I wanted them in the future. The doctor was so kind and walked through everything with me step by step. He explained exactly how my eyes had changed and why my old contact brand wasn't the right choice for me anymore. He asked about where I was from and we had an excellent conversation while he gave me my exam. He showed me images of the inside of my eyes and explained everything I was seeing and how they related to my overall health. Following my exam, I was handed back to Manuel who worked out my payment and insurance information. I asked plenty of questions about how much the insurance covered and different options. He was so patient with me and asked my opinion on what I thought was the best option instead of just handing me a bill, which I really appreciated. He really understood where I was coming from and worked with me to make the best choice for me. The only downside to this facility is the price. For my comprehensive exam and a 6 month supply of contacts, I paid almost $220, which I feel is pretty steep. If I knew a little more about my health insurance coverage, maybe I could have worked with them for something less but I was just relieved to be able to see better than I have in years! I plan on getting the prescriptions through them this time and ordering through 1-800-CONTACTS when I need a refill. Overall, I really enjoyed my time at My Eye Dr. in Chevy Chase. I called and was able to make an appointment over lunch for an eyeglasses exam the next day. The receptionist/technician was very welcoming and had me fill out forms and do a few vision tests. The wait to see the doctor was minimal, and he was also very friendly and helpful. He also provided me with some guidance once I transition from contacts to eyeglasses, as I haven't worn the latter for a few years. The doctor did have a bit of confusion over my wanting only an eyeglasses exam and not a contacts exam, but once I asked to confirm, it was fine. I came in for an eye exam and to order contact lenses. I knew what brand I wanted (Acuvue Oasis, which I've been wearing for over four years and adore), but the doctor talked me into trying Air Optix lenses as they would 'let my eyes breathe more'. He gave me a sample pair to put on, shone a light into my eyes, and that was it. The exam took less than 5 minutes, and as they were near closing, everything was extremely rushed. I could tell everyone couldn't wait to get home. Well lo and behold, I am charged a copay for my visit (NOTE: I have VSP and just received an eye exam from another eye doctor. There was no copay for the eye exam there so I am wondering why there was one here?), $98 for a contact lens fitting (that consisted of a doctor shining a light on my eyes for 3 seconds), and an exorbitant amount post-insurance for the contact lenses. My main dissatisfaction stems from my belief that the doctor wanted me to try a new contact lens brand just so he could charge me for a fitting. These lenses are actually WORSE than what I had before, and they dry my eyes out like crazy. After speaking with my new doctor, she even agrees that given the nature of my eyes, I should not have been switched to Air Optix. I wouldn't have minded paying the high prices if I had actually left with a product that is GOOD for my eyes, but instead I feel like I've been cheated all around. This is not even mentioning the long wait time I spent in there...after my exam I had to wait about 1 hour for someone to finish up my paperwork and order the lenses. read more

I am very disappointed with our experience at this place. I first went there for a routine eye exam and it was okay. Given how close this place is to where we live I suggested my husband to go there when he wanted to get a new pair of glasses. At first everything seemed okay,he got his examination and they let us choose a frame we liked. Then they gave a 3-week wait time for his glasses. They said that would be the latest date so we might even get it earlier. When the time came the glasses were not ready and it took them another week to get the glasses. Next thing we know, they fitted the wrong frame. It wasn't the frame we chose. So when we started to look online we saw that even for the frames we chose they were charging us 50% more. We could have gotten the same frames online and taken to them for fitting for half the price we paid and it would have come to us in 1 week! Since we wasted so much time with them, we asked them to fix their mistake and bring us the correct glasses we paid for in 10 days. They did that and brought the correct frame. But this time there is a little scratch on one of the prescription glasses. It was unbelievable how incompetent they were. Because it took us 1.5 months to get a scratched pair of glasses we are never going to deal with them again. I see that there are some good reviews about the eye doctors here and I have to say my eye examination experience was good as well. But I would never recommend actually getting any contacts or glasses from this place... read more

My experience dealing with one of the front desk ladies there was so frustrating and unacceptable that I didn't even care to wait and see the doctor almost immediately. I could have chosen to report this to the store manager but the attitude of the lady was so bad, I am pretty sure her manager must have been knowledgeable about her behavior but still chose to not take any corrective measures. I used a coupon from Living social. Doctor: She was good, a little fast i felt but overall I was fine. She clarified my questions but again in a hurry but atleast she was courteous, respectful with genuine care. If its for the doctor its a definite 3.5 star. Staff: The worst experience I had in any shop. Rude, arrogant and disrespectful. The women was not willing to spent more than 2/3 minute to select my frame. Fortunately I found one that I really liked and fitted me well. Without even asking, what kind of lens, coating, protection I was asked to pay 260 dollars (the coupon had 250 dollars for frame). I was like atleast show be what was selected on your computer. she turned to someone else and replied me to see the screen which was far far away from me. I was enquiring what are the others options, what the coating recommended, no replies but angry stare with less than 5 minutes into the process of selecting a frame/lens. I was polite all along the way even though I was treated as if , she was granting me a favour. I was really offended and took the least possible option (since the coupon covers it and no way had to spend) and ended paying 50 dollars more for worthless service. I was to buy a very good glass but ended buying some crap as a second glass. Am planing to order one online and my friend has good experience with those. I will never recommend any one to visit this place. I've been going to various My Eye Dr locations for years, and have lots of glasses from them. They always have done a good job. A few weeks ago, I broke my prescription sunglasses and went to this location to get some new ones. They helped me to find some frames and get the lenses I needed and cut off about 1/3 of the price by using every possible promotion, so that was nice. Unfortunately, in the days after I picked up the glasses I noticed that they made me feel drunk. I called the ask about what could be wrong, and the person working their spent some time helping me understand what could be wrong. (the frames are very big and curved, so I was basically getting a fishbowl look) They told me to come in and they would exchange the frames for better ones for no charge. I went in the other day, and Elissa (sp?) helped me find some frames that would not have the same issue. She quickly ordered the new ones, made sure I was happy, and sent me on my way. I figured I'd be fighting to not pay extra, or fighting for what I needed, but there was no fight necessary. This place will try to empty your wallets at every corner. Your prescription will always be "special" so it will never be covered by insurance or their promotions. I decided to get my prescription only and get my glasses done online for a much better all inclusive deal. When I asked them if I could get the pupillary distance they said it would cost $65. $65!!! for a simple measurement of the distance between my eyes!! I ended it up doing it online for free with precise results. I will never go to this place again. read more
