TLDR: Best restaurant experience I've ever had. It's so good that I have to write a review because I want more people to know about this gem. Great Quality! Great Value! Great Service! The place specializes in uni (sea urchin) but I didn't get to try it because my mom doesn't like sea urchin. I'll definitely give it a try the next time I come back with my friend The owners are extremely accommodating and very attentive, making sure that my mom and I had a great time after a long day of work. We arrived near closing time and Ms. Tomoko made sure that we have a good dining experience without rushing us like some other places we've been to. We ordered the salmon carpaccio, sashimi plate (8 slices), around 20 oysters and a mixed tempura plate. We ended up getting all of the above with extra sashimi, miso soup, and fruits to end the meal on the house (*´`*) The oysters were extremely good, it's $3 for each. They were fresh and plum! The mixed tempura plate was only $10 and you get 5 shrimps with 3-4 different types of veggies. I also enjoyed the sashimi plate and the owner also gave us extra fish with deep-fried bones. At the end of the meal, my mom decided to ask the owners about places in Japan because I'll be going on a trip soon. First time dining here with a party of 6 with 2 kids. Food was very good service was good. We enjoyed the freshness of the fish. They had a happy hour with pitchers of beer for a very reasonable price. One criticism was when we got the bill there was a hand written note saying the tip must be 20% or more. I thought this was a little tacky especially at a Japanese restaurant and made the interaction awkward with the waitress as she pointed out this note. Just left a bad taste after a great meal. I would recommend them just saying on the menu for a party of this size a tip of 20% would be automatically applied. I probably would have tipped 20% anyways. read more

If you're looking for a great date night, this is a great spot! We were looking for an omakase place with a good deal and good amount of food and came across this location. Omakase was about $49/pp and we were so full after (included egg custard, salad, miso soup) and they also have $2 beers for HH! My favorite was the toro and the raw shrimp. They ask you how you also like it cooked, in miso or fried. We also ordered a side of crab croquette and usually I am not a huge croquette person but damn, this was so perfectly crunchy and the filling was hot and delicious. read more

The servers and cook are Japanese, and you feel the culture and food being shared with you as a guest. A good place to take someone from out of town, to show them a typical authentic Japanese restaurant in the LA area. We tried: rainbow roll, toro cut sushi, tuna hand roll and blue crab handrail. Everything was delicious and freshly made. Rainbow roll had tuna, salmon and white fish. Toro cut sushi was very small so I wasn't satisfied with it, I will order something else next time. I will be honest: the original plan was to come through Miyabi Uni, but they were unable to seat my family party of 7. Since it was only Hubbers and I (but with the rest of our party still on the way) we scrambled through our phones Yelping for where to go. Turns out we didn't need to look far as this giant sign (which we ignored many times as we grubbed at either Madre's or Miyabi Uni) finally caught our attention. We looked through the menu and thought, yeah, there's something in here everyone will like. So we told our party to come through the same area, we will just be dining in next door. "There's a whole area at the back?!?" All those many times I walked by, I didn't think there was that extension. (I had assumed we were all just going to be seated at the bar since that was its initial appearance. And then this whole new section in the back! Heck, yeah, they're gonna accommodate us! The rest of our party was at least another 20 minutes away, so Hubbers and I each got a pint of Sapporo. We also put in 2 orders each of deep fried soft shelled crabs and deep fried oysters. (I'm hoping I timed it right for it to be on our table by the time everyone arrived.) Hubbers also put in a few orders of nigiri: salmon, yellow tail, salmon belly and mackerel. And last, the grilled yellowtail collar. And what perfect timing it was! My party arrived almost at the same time as the apps did. SOFT SHELLED CRABS: Comes 2pcs/order. They are small, but they packed tons of flavor! They very lightly battered to add a slight crisp but didn't take away the crabs' main essence. Yum! Most of us liked it so much, we put in an extra order. DEEP FRIED OYSTER: Caution - they are hot on the inside, so let it cool off for a bit. Batter was thick enough to keep the oysters in but thin enough so it doesn't take away the oysters' deliciously metallic taste. This was also done right. NIGIRI's and ROLLS: All of them were made with fresh ingredients. The salmon and salmon bellies were like butter, the mackerel with that briny, salty and vinegary taste, the yellowtail with its subtle freshness, the scallops and tuna... I mean, I found nothing wrong with any of them! GRILLED YELLOWTAIL COLLAR: Perfectly grilled, perfectly seasoned! All of us jumped on this and even the pickiest eater in our party had some. The meat was cooked flaky, omagaaaahhh, it was so good! TEMPURA: not my order, but got to try a piece and that was pretty well done as well. Thin but well seasoned Tempura batter, I felt it didn't need the dip! GINDARA GOZEN: Came with freshly tossed and dressed salad and delicious miso soup, this was my choice for lunch. The cod was broiled with a slight hint of burn which added to the flavor's character. Great miso marinade. The only down side was the fish bones were still in the filet. Really good otherwise. FOOD: 5. Everyone was happy with what they got! SERVICE: 5. I was originally going to ding it one star for a couple of reasons: 1) the floors were dirty, and 2) our server kept walking away every time we put an order in (we weren't done talking to her yet) and she would take off. I wondered why she just didn't get it all at once then put it through the kitchen all at once. And then I realized she was the ONLY server on hand AND there was limited staff in the kitchen. How she handled us, another party of four outside and a solo eater all by herself is beyond me. She was truly hustling and didn't flinch one bit. No unreasonable delays in delivery of food to our table either! 5 is well-deserved. VALUE: 5. For the quality and quantity we got?! The rating should be higher. PARKING: Basement parking and street available. OVERALL: 5. So the failed attempt to eat next door wasn't all FAIL: it was a blessing in disguise of some sort. We were all glad for it. Tucked away in Old Town Torrance is this cute, quiet little mom n' pop. It's easy to miss and is dwarfed by Myiabi and Madre, but we finally got around to giving it a try. The Omakase was a lovely lunchtime deal, and in light of today's prices, $40 is a steal for a fresh set of sushi. They give you a standard salad starter and a beautiful Chuwanmushi . The mushrooms are fragrant, and chunks of fish add sea savor. They give you a good variety of fish: tuna and toro of course, ikura, uni, salmon, tamago, eel, etc, etc. It's all fresh, good quality, worth paying for. There's miso soup to help you digest, deep fried shrimp heads are delicious, and there's even a Fried Banana dessert. That one didn't make a lasting impression but it's not bad. If there's more than two seated tables, you won't get speedy service. One poor young lady had the entire restaurant, and a single chef can only make the food so fast. Many heartfelt apologies were given, though no fault was found. Honestly, they are all lovely people and the delay wasn't her lack of trying. I came here on New Year's Day, since it was open and reservation only. I was greeted by my waitress and was seated. I waited around 10-15 minutes to get a menu. The same waitress was rushing back and forth between tables, it seemed she was the only one working on the floor. I understand that it's New Year's day, and most places were closed. The waitress was very apologetic and sincere, so it was ok. Maybe I caught the restaurant during a very hectic time, but the service was a bit slow. I ordered the Chirashi Gozen with Tempura, and it was delicious! Not sure if the whole set was supposed to come piece by piece, but my chirashi arrived much quicker than my tempura. I understand tempura is cooked, so I would expect there to be a wait. However, I was more than halfway done with my chirashi when the tempura came. The fish was delicious, but I felt they were cut just a little bit to the smaller side. However, presentation and taste were pretty good. This is a very traditional and well-done, meaning, executed, sushi restaurant. We were a rather large party of ten people, so the waitress, whose name I should have remembered, had a heck of time with all of our needs. If you're wondering what "gozen" stands for, it means food that is nourishing, for body and spirit. The only complaint that I have is that the sashimi that was used for the plates was used for the "chirashi," which I ordered. The fish is fine, but their should be a difference when it comes to adding a clam and / or other accompaniments like uni or fresh squid to the chirashi. Not very nice talking to the lady when you're doing a pick up order. And when I went to go pick up my order she handed me my food and said thank you so much as if I paid already. Yum! A rough week called for an impromptu date night and Irifune seriously delivered. Our selection of nigiri spanned across sake, chutoro, otoro, hamachi, unagi, aji, and a few others - everything was notably fresh and even the sushi rice was finely prepared to where one could taste each grain and light seasoning. We agreed this was second only to the handful of omakase-only spots we've tried over the years. Hand rolls were just as fresh and generously filled. On the hotter side, we thoroughly enjoyed the crab cream croquette, pork belly skewers, and hamachi kama. I'd pass on the hamachi belly it was mostly bones and little meat and the ika sugatayaki (tender, but lacking in char). There was a HUGE company dinner that night.. and it was a bit loud to talk.. the decor is simple, just don't judge by the book.
