    Gyoza six piece

Celebrated my birthday at one of my favorite old school Japanese restaurant. One thing I love about this place is their consistency. The quality and taste is always great. My favorites are the rice balls, mushroom salad, and gyoza.

Located off the corner of Western Ave and 182nd in Gardena. In the plaza in the corner parking is shared with all the other businesses in the plaza. Came here to meet up with some HS buddies. We had one of rooms where you sit on the floor. Service was good and pretty quick. The staff were friendly and hard working. I got the plain udon it was good. Overall had a good time here service was good and food was good.

As my rating indicates, I wasn't particularly impressed with this restaurant. It pains me to say this since I really had high hopes when I visited this place over the weekend. Don't get me wrong, it's not a terrible restaurant by any means. I liked the traditional Japanese decor and nostalgic songs playing on the speaker. The service was solid. Nothing to complain about that either. BUT the food... it was pretty disappointing. Some things that stood out to me, not in a good way: 1) The sashimi was fresh, but cut way too thick. I'm embarrassingly bad at handling chop sticks and the sashimi slices were hard to grab. 2) The California rolls barely had any avocados in them, if at all. 3) The tempura was not hot and crispy. The shrimp, which is usually my favorite tempura item, was limp and cold. Didn't get the sense that it was freshly made to order. I will acknowledge that this restaurant is generous with their portions. Can't imagine anyone leaving hungry if they order one of their bento boxes. However, it would have been nice if they focused more on the quality of their food as opposed to the quantity and variety.

I highly recommend the Mentai Cream Hot Pot. The creamy dashi broth is flavorful and tasty, perfect for sharing between 2-3 people. It comes with generous amounts of mentaiko, tofu, mochi, cabbage, mushrooms, pork belly and chicken. It's so delicious! Another recommended dish is the Salmon & Ikura Kamameshi aka cast iron pot. Their udon dishes are good too. The noodles are made in house daily. When u arrive, they always ask if you have a reservation. We have done walk-ins many times and were seated right away. I would suggest making a reservation for weekends and holidays, just in case.

Need to grab lunch in the South Bay and this place came up my search. First of all the entrance is nicely decorated with Japanese accents that transports me to Japan. We see mostly local Japanese people dining when we walked in so it's a good sign. There's a lot of options for lunch. We ordered curry udon with pork chop, rice with chicken bowl and udon with yellowtail rice bowl. The portion is pretty generous and everything was very tasty and hits the spot. What a local gem! We will come back again when we are in the area to try more dishes.

Izakaya Akatsuki popped up on my Feed, so I decided to go for an early lunch. The restaurant is tucked away in the corner of a strip mall, but is actually very spacious inside, including a few beautifully-decorated dining rooms on tatamis, perfect for events. I ordered agedashi tofu and the signature Original Umami Maze Udon. Food came out fairly quickly: I especially enjoyed the agedashi tofu, with its lightly-crisp exterior and soft, silky interior. The maze udon was tasty, but a bit too salty and heavy on green onions: portions were decent, but could've used less green onions to allow the chewy udon noodles to shine. Pretty-affordable meal at $24 total; there are also lunch specials under $20, which are great for the wallet. Service was a bit cold, but overall, a solid, no-frills udon restaurant for a satisfying meal.

Love this gem of an authentic Japanese restaurant! Vibe is homey, staff are very friendly, and food is delicious and fairly priced. We got the mentaiko motsunabe and it's one of the richest soups I've ever had. It's enough to feed 4 people!! Portions are very generous. Definitely will come back! Came on a Sunday night and surprisingly no wait!

We found ourselves at Izakaya Akatsuki because everywhere else was booked and busy. Izakaya Akatsuki, however, was a welcomed surprise. This was the first time we've ever encountered kamameshi irl. The small clay pot slow cooks the rice, protein, and whatever else i.e. veggies. For first timers, we ordered the Salmon & Ikura bowl ($26). Shiitake and shimeji mushrooms are cooked directly into the rice and the salmon + salmon roe are nestled on top. The flavors are wildly unexpected. The rice and salmon are pretty mild, but the salmon roe functions as a seasoning. I like the juxtaposition of the warm rice alongside the cool salmon roe. Delish. Also good was the spicy crispy tofu ($8). It's topped with chili oil, crispy onion, ponzu sauce + green onion. It's a new take on an old favorite and it was absolutely delightful. I like chili crisp onion anything - here it added a little crunch and heat. Everyone else around us came for their hotpot so we'll definitely be back for that.

Akatsuki in Torrance is such a gem. I love that they have tatami seating, it really adds to the cozy, authentic izakaya atmosphere. The portions are huge, the food is incredibly fresh, and you can truly taste that everything is made on the spot. Their bentos are especially amazing: beautifully prepared, satisfying, and a great value. They specialize in house-made udon and soba, and you can feel the care put into bringing traditional Japanese flavors to the table. Everything feels authentic and thoughtfully done, without being overpriced. A fantastic spot whether you're going solo or with a group. Definitely one of the best Japanese comfort-food experiences in the area.

Loved this old school izakaya spot - got a rec for it and so glad we could make the trip from Monterey park! Loved the gyoza with skirt and the maze udon! The udon had great umami fishy flavor. Workers were super nice, does feel run down but that adds to the charm. I also saw some private tatami-y rooms in the back! We went on a Friday at 7:30p and no wait but maybe unusual - heard someone call and ask if there was a wait. Also heard you can make reservations.

The restaurant is located in a small shopping plaza on the border of Torrance and Gardena. Inside has nice traditional Japanese décor (with some private party rooms) and it is large enough to accommodate 100 guests. The friendly waitress at the reception guided us to our table and brought menu and water right away. The menu was quite extensive and for this visit we ordered the following items: Blue Fin Tuna Negi Toro Bowl with Side of Hot Udon: The toro tuna was silky, buttery, and fresh. The rice was perfectly cooked and pleasantly seasoned (slightly tangy and sweet). The side order hot udon had a light but flavorful broth and with hint of bonito flakes. The noodle texture was quite different from regular udon (maybe due to the addition of tapioca), it had firm feel and quite al dente. Original Umami Maze Udon: The broth-less sauce was creamy and flavorful, and also with hint of bonito flake. The mixture of green onion, seaweed and cilantro blended well with the savory ground pork and runny egg. The texture of noodles was similar to the hot udon's which was on firm and chewy side. Agemochi Oroshi: Nice side dish to complement the lunch, the lightly fried mochis were soft without being overly chewy and went well with the grated daikon, green onion and dashi sauce. A nice lunch experience overall.

AMBIENCE: (4/5) - Spacious seating - Not a lot of tables and it filled up fast but we didn't have to wait since we came for an early dinner - There are private rooms for bigger parties - Very cute Japanese decor SERVICE: (5/5) - Greeted with a smile - Waiter came by quickly and took our orders - Food came at a reasonable time - We had a lot of questions for the waiter and she was so patient with us and gave us recommendations since everything looked so good and we couldn't decide what to order - The udon I got came out fresh and hot from the kitchen FOOD/DRINKS: (5/5) - Tempura Udon (5/5): The udon was the perfect texture and they gave me a lot! I almost couldn't finish it and I came here hungry. The tempura was also great, lightly breaded and not oily at all. I love that this combo gives you a whole plate. OVERVIEW: (5/5) - Comfortable seating. Freshly made udon every day & of a good size for the price. Would come here again!

Unfortunately, the food told a very different story. We ordered a wide variety of yakitori since the glowing reviews repeatedly highlighted it as the restaurant's specialty. Instead, what arrived was surprisingly inconsistent. Nearly every skewer had a heavily charred exterior that crossed the line from smoky to bitter. Good yakitori should showcase careful grilling that enhances the ingredients, not mask them with burnt flavors. The proteins themselves didn't taste particularly fresh, and the seasoning was all over the place. Some skewers were so lightly seasoned they tasted unfinished, while others were aggressively salty. Consistency is one of the fundamentals of good yakitori and it was noticeably lacking here. Having visited plenty of izakayas and eaten more than my fair share of yakitori, I'm not claiming Michelin-level expectations. I simply know the difference between properly grilled, well-balanced skewers and ones that miss the mark. Based on this visit, the food was below average and failed to live up to the hype. With the volume of positive reviews, I expected a memorable yakitori experience. Instead, I left wondering if I had visited the same restaurant everyone else was raving about.

When we arrived luckily there was no wait and were sat immediately. Luckily it was only a couple moments before a party of maybe 12 arrived behind us for dinner. ( see attached for reference ) i loved the balanced presentation and blend of flavors. Each tray had some miso, a 4 bite California roll, some rice, soba noodles, broth, wasabi and ginger. Mine came with some dipping sauce for the tempura. Considering the amount of food I was very satisfied. The tempura was gorgeously crafted with semi thin crisped batter, and a decent amount portioned. I was mostly amazed by my girlfriends pork plate. Their crisp cutlet had beautifully made with an easy crunchy exterior and soft tender pork savory to taste. All elements complimented each other perfectly. Their soba was also good quality and a nice touch to an already balanced dinner. While I was exactly stuffed after dinner, i was still impressed with their entree presentation, quality of food, calming ambiance and great service.

After browsing through their menu, we ordered the following items: Special Fish Combo (Spanish Mackerel): The Spanish mackerel was nicely grilled but lightly seasoned. It had quite a few bones, which took a little bit out of the enjoyment of the meal. The udon noodles had a very nice texture, however the broth was on the bland side. The California rolls were well made and flavorful. Tempura Combo: The shrimps were tender, however, the battered outer layer of the tempura was a tad thick and not quite airy. Like Fish Combo, the udon had a bland broth, and the California rolls were fine. Our main issue was the 50-minute wait time for the meals. Rather than feeling cramped, it feels welcoming and authentic - a place where the focus stays on good food, good drinks, and good company. Over several visits, these have become my favorite dishes: Cabbage Salad with Spicy Sauce - 4/5. Torihei offers two versions of its cabbage salad: one with a garlic sesame dressing and another with a spicy sauce. The garlic sesame version is fine, but the spicy sauce is the clear winner. It features crunchy garlic and chili oil that add texture and depth without overwhelming heat. I would have liked a little more acidity to brighten the dish, but it's still an excellent way to start the meal. Chopped Cucumber with Sesame Oil - 4.5/5. One of my favorite appetizers at Torihei. The cucumbers are smashed rather than neatly sliced, which gives the dish a rustic character and helps the dressing cling to every surface. The addition of tomatoes is a smart touch, contributing acidity and freshness. Combined with the flavorful sesame dressing, it becomes far more interesting than its humble ingredients suggest. Soboro-don - 3/5. This small rice bowl comes topped with ground chicken, a poached egg, and pickles on the side. The rice is cooked well, and the chicken itself is clearly of good quality. However, the ground chicken is surprisingly underseasoned and could use more salt or additional seasoning. Despite that flaw, it's still a comforting dish thanks to the well-prepared rice and silky egg. Beef Tongue Curry Rice - 4/5. Despite its name, this dish eats more like a stew than a traditional Japanese curry. Fortunately, it's very tasty. The sauce is rich and meaty with just a hint of curry spice. At the same time, the beef tongue contributes a buttery texture and luxurious richness. It's hearty, comforting, and one of the more memorable rice dishes on the menu. Beef Tongue Soup - 5/5. This is a clean, balanced soup that showcases restraint. The broth has enough meatiness to be satisfying without becoming heavy, letting other umami flavors come through. The beef tongue itself is tender and rich, making this an excellent side dish to accompany the restaurant's grilled offerings. Yaki Oni - 4.5/5. The grilled rice ball is exceptionally well executed. Though triangular rather than spherical, it achieves the ideal texture contrast: a lightly crunchy exterior with a soft, substantial interior. The surface develops a beautiful golden-brown crust without crossing into burnt territory. It's a simple dish done right and a perfect accompaniment to skewers. Grilled Squid - 3.5/5. The squid is succulent and tender rather than rubbery, which is often the challenge with grilled squid. The flavor is enjoyable, though I would have welcomed a bit more char and grill marks. Pork Belly and Chicken Thigh Yakitori - 3/5. These skewers are solid but not standout. Both were slightly drier than I prefer. The pork belly could benefit from more rendered fat and richness. At the same time, the chicken thigh would be more appealing with a juicier finish. Chicken Hearts and Beef Tongue Yakitori - 4/5. These are among the stronger skewers on the menu. Heavily exercised cuts tend to offer deeper flavor, and both deliver. The chicken hearts have a satisfying richness, while the beef tongue combines robust flavor with pleasant marbling. If you're ordering yakitori, these are better choices than some of the more conventional cuts. Meatball Yakitori - 4.5/5. This is deservedly one of Torihei's signature dishes. The exterior develops an excellent browning and a slight crust, while the interior remains tender, juicy, and intensely meaty. Chicken Kara-age - 3.5/5. The kara-age is good, but it falls just short of greatness. A crispier crust and juicier chicken would elevate it significantly. Still, it's a satisfying version of a classic izakaya staple. Fried Shishito Peppers - 3.5/5. These peppers are mild rather than spicy and develop a pleasant glistening texture when fried. Their slight fibrousness gives them character, making them a simple but enjoyable side dish. Creamy Annin Tofu - 5/5. Available either plain or with green tea syrup, both versions are excellent, though the green tea syrup is the better choice. The texture is closer to a delicate pudding than tofu, and the sweetness is restrained and balanced. It's a deceptively simple dessert that provides a satisfying and elegant finish to the meal. No izakaya experience is complete without alcohol, and Torihei delivers. The sake and shochu selections are solid, offering enough variety to complement the menu. Beer options are mostly limited to familiar Japanese labels, but they pair perfectly with the food. Combined with its cozy atmosphere and solid drink selection, Torihei is the kind of neighborhood izakaya that earns regulars for good reason.

With so many options, it was honestly a little overwhelming to choose. I decided to keep things simple and ordered the sashimi and broiled mackerel fish set, which came with rice, miso soup, cabbage salad, and macaroni salad. My husband couldn't settle on just one dish, so he went all out with a chicken oyakodon, grilled salmon, steamed eggplant, and a stir-fried chicken and bean sprout dish. The restaurant itself is narrow and deep, which actually reminded me of some of the small alleyway restaurants we visited during our travels in Japan. It added to the cozy and authentic feel. The service was attentive, especially when we requested a few extra items. One thing that really stood out was their ponzu sauce. It seemed to include green onions and perhaps a touch of vinegar, and it was absolutely delicious. It paired perfectly with the sashimi, steamed eggplant, and even the chicken dishes. Next time, I'm definitely going to spend some time studying the menu beforehand. The portions were generous enough that we had leftovers for another meal, and we were lucky enough to find parking right in front of the restaurant.

Definitely go for the nabe, and if you're here with several friends and family, the family course/set meal (which is what we got for 4 adults) is perfectly enough food for everyone. We added on the tongue as an a la carte because it wasn't part of the set and wanted to try it. Very good as well. Good service and very izakaya interior.

The ambiance is great, not so loud and the vibes are perfect for night out with the girls or even date night. We came in a group and just ordered family style but I started off with the Beef BBQ Yakiniku salad and it was so delicious I didn't share this particular plate it was so flavorful. Their Gobo Chips are a must along with their Doteni Braised Beef Tongue and that was my favorite so simple and that bite was perfection. Their chicken and green onion skewers those were finger licking good the chicken was so tender. We finished off with the Shabu shabu hot pot and that broth was so flavorful and all the cabbage, spinach and noodles were great! Everything we had was delicious and can't wait to go back and try some other items. Their customer service was great, we were a group of 6 and everything came out quick and we were able to enjoy our tasty food and drinks.

Note that all of the soba toppings are priced separately, which can make the dish a bit expensive. That said, we added shrimp and scallop tempura, and it was absolutely delicious. For yakitori, we tried the chicken wings and the chicken meatball. The meatball was amusingly served as one giant chicken-sicle! The wings had great flavor, though the skin was a bit too fatty. My husband also ordered a pork cutlet bowl, and we shared a sashimi plate with scallop, cod, salmon, and two types of tuna. Everything was incredibly fresh and delicious. We also shared the jidori egg and seaweed salad. Out of everything we ordered, my favorites were definitely the sashimi, the shrimp and scallop tempura, and the jidori egg. They do take reservations, but when we visited on a Sunday night, we were lucky enough to be seated right away. Dining here really felt like being back in Japan, and we'll definitely return.

There is a parking lot in the back but would recommend street parking as it gets pretty cramped in the lot. Vibe feels like an old school mom n pop Japanese restaurant - relaxed and welcoming. Was sat immediately - ended up ordering the hot Seiro soba, some shrimp and veggie tempura, and a beer. Everything was light, but filling and tasty. Noodles disappeared pretty quickly - definitely enjoyed it, as well as the broth. Tempura was also very well cooked. The shrimp tempura wasn't sad shrimp, they were sizable. Two meals were about $65 ish all together - not bad. Would come back!
