I Lost a Game of Reflexes, but Won at Dinner Despite living a 5 minute drive away from here since the dawn of time, we somehow missed this absolute gem of an Izakaya (first timers trying it). We walked in right on time for our reservation (because we're adults who respect the space-time continuum) and were ushered into a booth with "privatey" curtains. I'm not saying they'd hide you from the FBI, but they certainly provided enough cover for us to giggle and navigate stupidly through the menu. You can also order directly to a friendly human too. The atmosphere is colorful, lively, unstuffy, and private enough to enjoy good convo but not awko quiet. You order everything via an iPad, which is dangerous because when pictures of gyoza are staring you in the face, your impulse control vanishes. We ordered "a little bit of everything," which is code for "the table was structurally compromised by the weight of our dinner." * The Highlights: The pickled cucumbers (crisp enough to hear in the next county), the pork bowl, and sushi that actually tasted like it came from the ocean. I was so excited to try this place out. Only to walk in and get greeted by a lady who asked if we had a reservation. I told her politely "No". And she proceeded to turn us both away. I got up and drove all the way here to torrance from the SFV to Enjoy a dinner with my spouse. Im so disappointed for the lack of courtesy. She basically blamed it on us for not making a reservation and theres too many people. And saying that you need reservations and they dont accept walk-ins. How were we supposed to know? I've been to Tokyo's Yokocho alley and loved it! This place in Torrance did an amazing job replicating the vibe and decor. I love all the lanterns. We came for lunch and it wasn't crowded. We were seated right away. Our server was friendly and attentive. She walked us through the ordering process which was done on a tablet. Our food was tasty and we definitely ordered more than enough. I really liked the combo meals; such a great deal with so much food. I had the Ginger Pork combo. It came with a bowl of rice, miso soup, salad, cucumbers, and some dried fish (so good) The Tonkotsu Ramen was yummy as well. The Ramen was fresh and not chewy. My favorite was the Salmon bowl. Felt like I transported back to Japan!! My friends and I came here on a Saturday night for dinner. We had a reservation so we had our own private booth area with a curtain. The Yuzu sours were delicious! I saw they have a frozen one too - definitely would try it next time. I got the ume ochazuke - was warm, comforting, delicious! We shared the gobo chips - these surprised me! I like the texture and enjoyed the salty seasoning on it. We also shared the salmon sashimi bowl & the pork - bean sprouts stir fry dish. They also have a game where you can stop the clock at 10 seconds and if it is exactly at 10, you get your whole meal for free! TL;DR - really REALLY cool interior decor. Food was so-so, sometimes on the salty side. Would still come back again though. The 10 second challenge was so fun! This is a really cool place if you're a fan of traveling to Japan or Japanese culture. The interior decor is REALLY cool. They've designed the place to look like the street markets of Japan. If you've ever visited Tokyo or any major city in Japan, it is common to find many small side streets lined with stalls that serve food. So if you're looking for a place with wonderful ambiance and visuals, then this place should be near the top of your list. The service was decent and they were really polite. Now the down side. This is consistent with the previous reviews I've read. They've dialed up the salt for some reason. The food was so-so. The takoyaki was smaller than normal and the bonito flakes up top weren't waving around as they usually do upon arrival. It was still good though and I happily ate them all. The salmon nigiri was okay. The gobo chips were a little on the salty end. The chips were paper thin when they normally are a little thicker from my previous experiences. We got the teppan butakimuchi teishoku (grilled pork with kimchi set meal). There was a good amount of food on there but the taste was also just okay. A little on the salty side. I think part of our experience was tarnished from reading the previous reviews before we decided on eating here. With the right crowd, mood, and level of hunger, I'd enjoy this place even more. But I LOVE the interior decor lol OH! And at the end of your meal... they have the 10 second challenge. It was so cool and fun. What a great eating experience! And the food was great too! Torrance Yokocho is unique in that the inside of the restaurant replicates the narrow, lantern lit, streets of Japan. Whether through Yelp or visiting the restaurant's website reservations are recommended. I made mine easily for a Wednesday night, for two. I would suggest that if you're planning on a large party outing, you should consider a reservation. Anyway, my friend and I arrive and were seated in a little booth and the server walked us through the process of ordering. Super easy to do on the kiosk provided. We scrolled through the menu and selected a variety of appetizers, sushi, and a rice dish. What's great about the kiosk is you can order at your leisure. The wait staff was great. They checked on us during the ordering process to make sure we were doing okay, came by to check on us in general, and were just super attentive. After the server explained the ordering process she hydrated two hot towels for our use, what a lovely detail. The food was so good! I've read through some of the other reviews which mention "salty" but I'd disagree. I didn't think the food was over salted but appropriately salted. For example, we ordered the mini cha su bowl and the pork was salty, but that's what I expect from pork belly. For us, one of the stars of our meal was the Japanese yam with garlic soy sauce. The texture was unique and the garlicky flavor was amazing. I think you have to like pickled things to appreciate this. We ended our meal with dessert. I recently met some friends for dinner here and am so glad we tried this spot! It was delicious! We were easily able to make a reservation in advance and were quickly seated upon arrival. The menu is digital from a screen at your table and it's really easy to browse all of the options. We ended up ordering items as the meal continued and everything came out promptly. The kids were really excited about the toys you could order to have brought to the table! Such a nice touch. I opted for the Yuzu cocktail and loved it! Another in my party ordered the grapefruit cocktail, which requires you squeeze the grapefruit juice in your own- warning. I loved the hot udon and the dragon roll. Had been planning to come here ever since it opened! I've been to the "real" Tokyo Yokocho alley which is super duper cool - and this place here in Torrance does an amazing job to replicate the vibes and feels of the real deal! We had both the shoyo and spicy versions of the tonkotsu ramen and a ginger pork dish. All were really great. The ramens were as good as any I've had in Torrance or Gardena for sure- although was a little sad there was no egg...? The piece of pork though was really large and succulent! It was a big one piece though - I was kinda missing my Korean scissors...!?!? Same with the ginger pork dish- delicious - but served on large strands a good 5-10 inches long and thick - needed cutting or something very awkward eating with just chopsticks? The included sides of tofu with chili sauce and picked cucumber were perfectly seasoned. The booths were comfy and felt so private with the curtains. Overall, I found the food to be good ... if not exceptional, still very good with a beer (although the cartilage I ordered was undercooked). I also found the ordering system to be somewhat confusing. At 5pm on a Tuesday evening, it wasn't full but diners started to arrive soon after we were seated. Unfortunately, I don't know how big the resto is as each table is in its own nook behind a noren (curtains.) They have daily specials, and the Tuesday special is 50% off sushi. So, of course we ordered sushi! We ordered a few skewers, sushi and a chicken paitan ramen. We enjoyed everything but the ramen. There were several chicken paitan ramen options. My wife and I tried this place recently and had a very enjoyable dinner. We tried a little of everything from the varied menu. Starting with tempura we sampled the shrimp and the shiitake mushrooms. Next up was the gyoza which were very good. From there we tried a few different items like beef, chicken, and eel from their yakitori menu. All three were good with the chicken and eel being the best. Lastly we split a bowl of the garlic ramen and some thinly shaved pork with bean sprouts and vegetables. Everything we tried was good and some very good. To drink I just had a soft drink while my wife ordered a delicious looking grapefruit Chu-Hi that she loved. Inside the place is designed to look like narrow back alley in Tokyo, and it does a great job of getting you in the spirit to taste the items on the menu. Great job to whoever designed it. I had a great experience dining here! Our experience started with some cool expanding hand towels that our server activated with hot water. Ordering is done through a small tablet on the dining table. Food comes out as it becomes ready, so we found that most items came at different time and some items took much longer than others. However it is very easy to keep ordering more and there is an order history button to watch out for any items that you might be missing! The yakitori was so good and we ordered several of it. I also loved the tempura kabocha!! The chopped bowl of seafood had a great variety of flavorful and fresh seafood which was super good. The ordering was on an IPad and not rushed. Started with Hakutsuru Sayuri Nigori which had a different twist for Sake and a Sapporo Draft. Proceeded with the assorted Tempura 7pc and Crunch Roll, Homemade Gyoza 5pc and Hot Tempura Udon. The tempura was perfect as was the Udon as well as the other dishes. Plenty of helpings requiring a go box. The napkins looked like small wafers until our server added hot water and they expanded like 2 columns rising from the earth. Pretty cool. Fun izakaya experience that felt like we were in Japan. Most of the tables are cozy booths with half curtains providing privacy. Order all your food, drinks, condiments, and even napkins and utensils from the tablet on the table. Our food came out quickly. The cucumbers with plum were a good portion size and had perfect crunch and flavor. We finished the cucumbers but took the remaining sauce home, it was that good. During that time, multiple staff members--including the manager--walked past us several times without offering any greeting or acknowledgment. Came here on a Friday night with a group of seven. Because of the size of our group, we weren't able to sit in one of the yokocho-themed booths. Instead we were in the open area with more tables, but it was decorated there too. There's a QR code provided at the table that handles the menu and ordering. The menu is categorized by different "restaurants," including sushi, yakitori, ramen, tempura, etc. Our group ordered several items across the board. Our favorites turned out to be the gobo chips, mini bara chirashi bowl, maru gyoza, and mitarashi dango. We also got the daikon salad. The portion size was large, which was a nice surprise. All of these I'd definitely order again. Some other dishes we tried included unagi yakitori, chicken heart yakitori, tempura kabocha, karaage torimomo, karaage ikageso. I enjoyed the yakitori, but I wish the karaage was served with a mayo or another dipping sauce. If you want to try the specialized rice imported from Japan, be prepared to wait an hour. The long wait is due to it being cooked in a clay pot, the traditional way. We tried the $20 one, and waited the full hour. Honestly, it was the smoothest rice I've ever eaten though! Torrance Yokocho is located in Rolling Hills Plaza, between Bed Bath & Beyond and European Wax Center. Parking is easy to find. Reservations are a must if you're coming on the weekend. Japan feels! I love Japan and Torrance Yokocho defintely takes me back to my favorite travel destination of the Land of the Rising Sun. This spot definitely has all the Japan feels the moment you walk in. It truly does look like a "Yokocho" or a "alleyway." In Japan on can find a lot of these alleyways that have hidden gem izakayas, bars, and eateries. At Torrance Yokocho; the boothes are within the "alleyway." They also some longer tables towards the back for larger parties as well as bar seating for some limited walk in diners. I would highly recommend making reservations way ahead of time because seating is hard to come by. The boothes definitely give the best experience. Even the booths give the Japan feels with Japanese printed menus on the wall and different Japan event posters. Ordering here is all via a tablet or a QR code on your phone. You can order from nine plus different restaurants here. Among the selections you can find are yakitori skewers, tempura, sushi, gyoza, karaage. My friend and I chose to get Tsukune (ground chicken ball skewers) and Harami (beef inside skirt steak skewers), Tori Paitan Shoyu Ramen and Assorted Tempura. Food came out fairly quickly which was quite nice. I was worried as I saw some reviews say food comes out slow but that was not the case with us. We were even there on a Friday night! Food was pretty good and I enjoyed the skewers and tempura. The ramen was good but was far from the being the best that I had. Service was great overall we were even given complimentary green tea! Tokyo's yokocho--local backstreets and alleyways, are lined with casual eateries. This is where "Torrance Yokocho" derives its name. The store occupies an end unit. Although there are front and back doors, you access the store's primary entry by walking down an "alley" and using the side door. This helps to set the mood. The footprint of the leasehold is long and narrow. Inside, there are open areas in the front and back with larger tables; there are a number of booths along with the length of the pub with flags/curtains that offer a bit of privacy. The store describes itself as a "Japanese tapas" bar. I think this description is workable as this really is a Japanese pub with small bites. To order your food and drink, you scan a QR code on your mobile device to access the menu. You also order using your mobile device. This caused me a bit of trouble: The description of the food items is really minimal as there isn't a lot of viewable space on a mobile device; and my QR reader used this opportunity to allow distracting prompts not related to the restaurant to pop up. The waitress had to help me find identify the restaurant's instructions. However, once your order is placed, it comes out fairly quickly. This restaurant is "cashless". They take electronic payments; they do not handle cash. I visited this restaurant on a whim. This location was a Japanese pub that went out of business during the Pandemic. The landlord left the space unchanged. This makes sense as the interior decor is elaborate, and it would have cost a lot to recreate it from scratch. I like their drink selection of Japanese beverages, although their cocktails are not very strong. I can see why some of the other ratings are low. The service is hit or miss. I think they are understaffed here. On their busy nights, you might have to wait longer for your food. But I'm still giving this place a favorable review. It's so unique to Torrance. Lots of parking. Dinner in Torrance, California... Torrance Yokocho sounded like it would be a fun place to dine because there used to be Yokocho Alley in Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii... but not anymore... I liked it and miss it. However, Torrance Yokocho is cozier. It was rather dark, except for the counter seating where we were seated (because we didn't have a reservation). The booths on the side were curtained off for privacy. Service was efficient and polite. We ordered by QR code. Our food was delivered by servers who were courteous. I got the Corn Butter, Harami beef skewer, and mini Bara Chirashi Don. Everything was presented nicely and tasted fresh! Thank you for squeezing us in! We felt like we were in Japan! My husband, mother and I came here this past Sunday. Great aesthetics, ambience, and delicious food! My favorites were cucumber and ginger salad, salmon nigiri, pork tonkatsu ramen, crunchy roll, and fried gyoza. Matcha ice cream with red bean waffle topped off our dinner perfectly. Customer service was fast and friendly. I could not have found any more kinder service than this place. I left the restaurant feeling like we could be better customers. LOL! Also, stay a little longer and enjoy the hot green tea after your meal. Keep in mind: this is tapas style, which was fantastic because we were able share several plates and not feel like we ate too much. If you want a light dinner, or got the munchies, definitely come to Torrance Yokocho. Don't forget to take photos! I do wish they had more selections of food, which is why I give it a four. Everything is overpriced. To be full, you have to spend around $35-$50 per person. Ramen portion wasn't much for a $14 to $20 range. Ramen toppings are extra. For example, corn is $3.00 extra. One skewer is between $3-$6 average All of the orders come from one kitchen, so the multiple businesses idea is just marketing to bring people in. Server didn't ask if I wanted anything to drink. Server also never came back to ask if I needed anything. I found via a Yelp review that you order water through their tablet? Do that if you want water. Restroom could use some more cleaning more frequently. Order through the tablet, but pay at the front. This place is decent for casual drinks and snacks with friend(s). read more

I had heard some hype about this recently opened place and I'm always a fan try good Japanese food. It's located in a busy shopping plaza with ample parking. Keep in mind, they are still fairly new (as of July 2024) so they haven't set up an online reservation system yet. At this time, they have very restricted hours when you have to call in to make a reservation. It's not a big place so not a lot of seating. Reservations are preferred as they have limited availability for walk-ins. The ambience of the restaurant is definitely 5 stars. When you walk in, it feels like you're transported to a Japanese street alley in the middle of a food night market. The decor and seating set-up feels so authentic and definitely a fun experience. We sat at the counter where we could get a peek at the grills and the food preparation. Once seated, you use the QR code to place your orders directly from your phone. It keeps your tab open so you can continue adding to your order during the course of the meal. In terms of food, it's all mostly small plates and of different varieties...skewered meats, grilled options, raw seafoods/sushi, ramen, etc. Most of the food was overall decent. I think their skewered meats were probably the best stuff on their menu. The ramen and gyoza were okay. All in all, a fun dining experience with pretty good food and variety. read more
