Tako tamago Black Sea bream and halibut
Stephanie A.

What a divine find in Torrance! You do need reservations but we called and they had a spot for us. We got to sit right at the bar and I love sitting at a sushi bar. Can I just say the music was amazing!! Early 90's Japanese music is amazing. Aikawa Nanase was on and I was allll about it. They have Sapporo on draft so that's great. I wasn't sure how the sushi chef worked but he looked busy so we ordered with the waitress and with him. It was only him and he was amazing. The standouts were the scallop, amber jack and halibut. Sushi was fresh and rice was yummy. The negihama handroll was fresh. For me the most amazing thing was the fried anago (sea eel) which was a special of the kitchen. Sooo good and the octopus was perfectly cooked. Amazing!! Also the tempura roll was the best I have ever had. The fish is fresh and the price is fair and worth it. I would be back again.

First 1/2 Omikase and some a la carte (snow crab, marinated salmon, blue fin tuna, albacore)

Everything was incredible and I don't say that lightly! The freshness was unreal and all the flavors balanced perfectly. They won us over, we can't wait to come back! The albacore was my FAVORITE (bottom right). Honorable mention to the extra fatty tuna per my boyfriend, that was his favorite. But you seriously can't go wrong with anything. The marinated salmon melted perfectly in your mouth. The blue fin tuna was dreamy. And the snow crab was insanely delicious. I probably wouldn't get the spider roll again, only because it wasn't as amazing as the sushi so id rather get more of what we loved lol. Also, get the house salad!! The dressing is so refreshing, wishing they sold that separately to go lol. (P.S. the service was perfect, they are the sweetest people! They've been here 20 years!)

Dinner reservations required. Not sure why. The place was 1/3 or less full. When we arrived we were the only ones. Oh well, whatever The sushi is spectacular. Wow! Sure , it's expensive , but the quality here is amazing I was referred here from some of my Japanese national friends. They did not steer me wrong. Best sushi in the South Bay. The service is prompt, polite , amazing. This is now my go to place

Chef's choice Assorted sashimi with cold sake

We've decided that for our anniversary, we always eat sushi, and this year did not disappoint! In LA, you can easily find pricey sushi, but this place offers great quality at a reasonable price. We wanted to focus on sushi, so we kept the appetizers light. Always gotta get the tempura shishamo--so good! Also, the sake from the chef's hometown in Toyama is a perfect match with the meal. so we highly recommend it.The restaurant is small, so it's better to make a reservation.

Came here for my birthday. Very quaint, clean, and delicate food. Great customer service too. Two things to note: 1. One of the fish head dishes was so thin there was virtually no meat in it. I wish the waitress gave me a heads or cancelled before serving (you can see it in my pictures). 2. PSA for those interested in trying this place: it's reserve only!

Sashimi, part of our omakase

Our go to sushi place in the South Torrance area. The owner chef is reserved and very nice. He comes from a family of sushi chefs from the Toyama prefecture so we appreciate the specialties he serves from that area such as the sauté white baby shrimps (Shiro ebi)!

Vicky C.

The fish could be fresher. Still, it's a decent spot for conversations with coworkers or friends, and the service was good.

Is there a lunch menu? if so where can i find it?

Go to https://www.sushiken-la.com/menu-dine-in & under Menu Dine In: Reservation Only for Dinner, there are 2 links: Dinner & Lunch; click on Lunch for the lunch menu.

How do people make reservations here? I've called non stop but no one ever answers

Trying call right when they open for lunch/dinner, or a few mins. before they close for lunch/dinner. They're really busy mid-lunch/-dinner rush so they're not likely to pick-up.

They not only had a space that big, but it also felt private. The staff was super attentive. The food is great. I ordered a rainbow roll. All the fish was super fresh. Even though we had a large group, we all got our food at around the same time. It was a great lunch for our work pal.

We chose Ise-Shima at the Miyako Hotel for an early birthday celebration with my parents, wife,…read morechildren, sister and nephews. It should have been an easy win. The room is beautiful. The chefs are visible. The staff is plentiful. The music is good. The atmosphere feels like the kind of place that understands hospitality. Unfortunately, the experience never quite came together. The first challenge was the temperature. The dining room felt more like a sauna than a restaurant. To his credit, our server Arthur worked hard to help and eventually got management to increase the air conditioning. He was easily the standout of the evening and did everything he could to salvage the experience. We ordered extensively, including the $130 Ise Course. Some of it was quite good. Some of it was surprisingly disappointing. The grilled lobster with yuzu miso and kinome was completely overcooked, dry and buried under too much sauce. One of the signature dishes of the course ended up being one of the weakest. The grilled yellowtail suffered from the same problem: dry, overcooked and lacking the care you would expect from a restaurant presenting a seasonal multi course menu at this price point. The larger issue was organization. Dishes constantly arrived with servers asking, "Who ordered this?" or "Who has the udon?" The dining room felt strangely disconnected from the kitchen. Food runners seemed unsure where dishes belonged, which created confusion throughout the meal. Then things really went sideways. Trying to be respectful, I asked that my parents be served first. Everyone eventually received their meals and continued eating. The problem was that my Ise Course never arrived in sequence. My family finished their meals. My children finished. My parents finished. My sister finished. And on my birthday, I sat there alone waiting for several missing courses while everyone else watched. A seasonal set menu is supposed to feel paced and intentional. Instead, it felt forgotten. Arthur again stepped in and spoke with management. The restaurant offered complimentary desserts, which was appreciated, although somewhat awkward because my meal was still arriving while everyone else was already moving on to dessert. What happened next genuinely surprised me. When the bill arrived, management returned and asked whether we would be willing to authorize an additional charge so gratuity could be increased from 18% to 20% because of the size of the party. After the heat, the delays, the confusion, the overcooked centerpiece dishes, the missed pacing and spending a birthday meal eating alone after everyone else had finished, it felt like the wrong conversation to be having. I don't enjoy writing reviews like this because there is clearly talent in the building and Arthur deserves recognition for how hard he worked. But hospitality is ultimately about making people feel cared for. On this visit, despite a beautiful room and some good food, that never happened.

I am disappointed in myself for waiting this long to try Ueno Sushi. I've been driving by this location on Carson st for 10 years. It used to be something else (Thai maybe?) before it was a sushi restaurant. I think it was something else before that. I never went here because I thought the food would be mediocre given the history of changes but I was so wrong. SO WRONG! I came here on a Friday night for a party of 1 and while the restaurant was full and many customers were coming in for their reservations, I did not have to wait. The Sashimi Combo 10pc was surprisingly generous. Every single piece of sashimi was huge. I honestly thought they forgot to cut each piece in half lol. It also comes with a bowl of rice, salad, and miso soup. I finished the night with blue fin toro sushi. For those who might find themselves confused like me, this is labeled Sushi on the menu, but it is better labeled as nigiri -- the sashimi on a small ball of rice. It comes with two pieces and the tuna was HUGE. I almost couldn't see the rice! I was blown away by what I was getting but it makes sense given the price I was paying. I was so happy. Overall, great food, wonderful portion sizes. Downside is the pricing but it matches what you're getting. The biggest downside is the parking. It is a small parking lot so you may have to get street parking. Other than that, I'm coming back.

We arrived late at around 1:30 pm on a Saturday afternoon but the waitress was patient and friendly, guiding us to seats and let us know to order before their kitchen was closed. It had a lunch special menu which showed several special items at a very affordable price. We picked the Negitoro Bowl from this special menu (at half of the regular price). The tuna had a balanced fat and was minced in a manner that I felt it melt in my mouth. It's a good match with rice. The Kaisen Bowl had a variety of seafoods and all of them tasted very fresh! The salty fish roe made the rice more flavorful. The Kaisen Bowl came with a miso soup and a salad. We also ordered a soba which was well cooked. We definitely will go back to try more dishes!

However, they do try their best. The hand rolls were average to below average. The sushi rice is not made properly because when you pick up the individual rolls by chopsticks, the roll falls apart. That is a NO-NO in the sushi world. I would assume that the mixture of rice/vinegar/water/salt/sugar/temp needs to be altered. For the price and quantity, I would say it is a good deal for the all-you-can eat especially if you are just hungry for a meal. Quality is another subject.

We arrived right at opening (5:15 PM) without a reservation. We were told we could sit if we left before 6:30 PM because of a later booking. Since we were just having a quick dinner (4 adults and 1 child), we agreed. However, the terrible hospitality started immediately when she forced our group of 5 into a tight 4-person booth, making us extremely uncomfortable. Throughout the meal, IYA made us feel incredibly unwelcome, constantly rushing us and giving us dirty looks. Even though we were well aware of the time, she aggressively pushed the dessert menu and called for "last call" at 6:00 PM just to kick us out faster. When we politely asked for extra broth, she snapped that there would be an extra charge with a terrible attitude, then literally slammed the dish down on our table. The absolute worst part was her handling of my Service Dog. As someone who legally requires a service animal, I had my dog right next to me. Without even asking if it was a registered service animal, IYA rudely and aggressively demanded that I put the dog on the floor. Her complete lack of education, empathy, and legal understanding regarding service animals is deeply concerning and discriminatory. If you work in hospitality, basic manners and knowledge of service animal regulations are mandatory. IYA was incredibly rude, ignorant, and unprofessional.
