We came here as a last resort due to the seafood restaurant a couple of doors over, which had a wait time that was over an hour long. We walked in and were told they were closing at 9 Hey how long does it take to make Sushi, we said. Big mistake, we were rushed, in the middle of dinner we asked for an extra drink and were told it was too late for another. We had Sushi, Crab, and select other items. Can I just say the music was amazing!! Early 90's Japanese music is amazing. Aikawa Nanase was on and I was allll about it. They have Sapporo on draft so that's great. I wasn't sure how the sushi chef worked but he looked busy so we ordered with the waitress and with him. It was only him and he was amazing. The standouts were the scallop, amber jack and halibut. Sushi was fresh and rice was yummy. The negihama handroll was fresh. For me the most amazing thing was the fried anago (sea eel) which was a special of the kitchen. Authentic Japanese food, incredible variety of sushi and sashimi, I love this place. I visited our fan. They only have a few genuine Japanese rolls, the only reason I give it four star a lot of time I have to tell the waitress or the chef not to put too much wasabi between the rice and the fish of my sushi. One of the best green teas I've had also their miso soups are incredible. Everything was incredible and I don't say that lightly! The freshness was unreal and all the flavors balanced perfectly. They won us over, we can't wait to come back! The albacore was my FAVORITE (bottom right). Honorable mention to the extra fatty tuna per my boyfriend, that was his favorite. But you seriously can't go wrong with anything. The marinated salmon melted perfectly in your mouth. The blue fin tuna was dreamy. And the snow crab was insanely delicious. Sake was light and refreshing and just the right amount! Toro and chutoro were out of this world - super delicious and amazing quality. Ume shiso roll was fantastic as well. I came here for lunch for Omakase. I've been to a number of places near by, and they have all been lackluster. I needed a new place to find better fish and rice. This place had high reviews, and was nearby so I thought I'd give it a try. I sat at the sushi bar, and waited around 10 minutes to the dinner omakase for lunch. They have more fish options here, at a price, and it was fresh, Clean, and good. The rice bed was "OK" as it was hard in certain places and not enough acidity. Overall I think it's a decent place with a market price for Omakase. I wouldn't order it all the time, but it's a good 2nd or 3rd choice. read more

After returning from Japan in mid October 2022, we were looking for a sushi restaurant with the same feel as Japan. I happened to see Sushi Ken while out shopping and decided to take my husband that night. The restaurant didn't open until 5:00pm and I had read some reviews to get there early because they fill up fast. We arrived a little before 5pm and when it opened we walked in only to see a sign that read "reservations only", but they were nice enough to seat us. The waitress was very kind and the service was a 10. All of the Sushi we ordered was delicious and fresh. We also ordered some tempura that was very good as well. Torrance Food Crawl #327 I used to sometimes get sandwiches at a sandwich shop at this same location. Then ten or so years ago I went by and saw that the space was occupied by a Japanese sushi restaurant. Even though I had started with the intention of having a sandwich for dinner that day I ended up having sushi, and I remember it as being pretty darn good. It took me ten years but I finally showed up for my second visit. Rather than sample individual sushi items I ordered the Chirashi Sushi Dinner, which has seafood on top of white rice. The chirashi was preceded by Miso Soup. Very good. I could have had a couple of portions of the soup. All of the seafood in the Chirashi was very fresh. The Uni (sea urchin roe) was fresh and very nicely just slightly sweet. The salmon, tuna, and other fish all turned out well, the shrimp was so-so. The vegetables and tofu were all good, as was the white rice. I also ordered a side dish, Baked Pickled Mackerel, which was served after the chirashi. The mackerel was cooked more on the skin side which made that side crispier but the fish was cooked completely. Sometimes mackerel can have a strong salty taste but this was more mild. Some grated radish was on the side to provide some cool vegetable tastes. Service was very good. The food was prepared in a decent time and the server was attentive. read more

Tried the omakase here. $42.30 gets you a small appetizer (two kinds of seaweed for us), miso soup, ice cream for dessert, and 13 pieces of nigiri: tuna, fatty tuna, red snapper, marinated salmon, amberjack, pike mackerel, Spanish Mackey, baby sardine, steelhead, black snapper, uni, salmon roe, egg Omakase here is solid though not mind blowing you amazing. I do appreciate the creativity with the fish (never had three types of mackerel in one sitting), the single chef is somehow able to efficiently handle an entire restaurant (we were in and out in an hour), and service is very attentive. Doesn't hurt that the place is in a massive plaza with plentiful parking either. I would say the quality of the fish here is comparable to Nozomi in Torrance (but with better value given the quantity of food), but not to the level of Kanpachi in Gardena or Chitose in Redondo. So solid omakase at a fair price point with great service. Definitely frequented by regulars and I can see why. I'd personally probably drive a little further for Kanpachi, but it's nice to have a place like this 10 minutes away. read more

God I love south bay sushi. It may not be the best of the best, but it's dirt cheap compared to LA! Sushi Ken has quite a selection. We started with my favor app, the Ankimo, a monkfish liver I once heard described as the "poor man's foie gras." I also love deep-fried Soft Shell Crab, but it's hard to find a fresh one. Sushi Ken comes about the closest I've seen. The nigiri is still the main attraction, and their delicate, vinegar-ed rice does the sashimi justice. All the sushi food groups are there: tuna, toro, halibut salmon, salmon roe, uni, tamago. They also throw in a few less common pieces, like baby sardine, white shrimp, and orange clam. If you're craving sushi, Sushi Ken has got you covered. Of all the places I've been in South Bay, they have the best quality so far. HIGHLY recommend! read more

This is my very first review and hate for it to be a negative one as I'm fairly a positive person. Based on the criteria of reviewing (food, service, and ambiance), I can say that the food looked good from the pictures and had a good variety according to the menu. Service was terrible as you'll know why as you continue reading. Ambiance was regular, nothing spectacular. So, regarding the service - pathetic! I was debating whether to write this review or just let it be, but something just happened and I felt like "wow, wtf just happened here." I'm writing this 5 minutes after leaving the restaurant. So, I went inside the restaurant and a server had asked me for how many, I said just 1 then they asked if I had a reservation. I said no and he said, "sorry, we are busy as you can see, sorry." In my head, there was about approx 10 people in the restaurant, a party of 5 sitting at a table and another party sitting at the bar. There was 5 tables that was vacant and also there were a few seats at the bar, so the server could have at least seated me at the bar. Then, as I was about to walk out, two people entered and the waiter asked how many and they said 2 and they were automatically seated. So, I'm writing this in my car in disbelief on what I just highly suspect to be discrimination and that I just been discriminated. Nothing against Japanese culture and people, as I actually love Japanese culture, but all the people in the restaurant were Japanese and I'm thinking the server knew I wasn't Japanese, so I guess I wasn't allowed to eat there because I wasn't Japanese (but I'm a kind of Asian). By the way, the two people that entered after me and got seated were Japanese (not 100% sure, but they spoke Japanese). Mind you, I was a party of 1 and there were many vacant tables and a few seats at the bar, so what's the reason for not me being seated at the bar since I was only a party of 1? Forget this place! Please don't support this please. Everyone should feel welcome and all ethnicity and race should be welcome. I'm 99.9% felt that I was discriminated against eating here. LOVE the Stamina Bara-Chirasi! The description on the menu is: "Sea urchin salmon egg, tuna etc over rice" What they mean by that is that besides the uni and ikura, they will chop up whatever bits are around for the chirashi. The uni was super sweet, fresh, and tasty -- much better actually, than Nozomi's uni, I have to say. Some other points I'd like to mention: We had a toddler at our table, and the staff was very gracious to her, providing her with child-proof plasticware, and gifting us with some toddler sized sushi! It's nice to be out at a restaurant that can deal with children. The wasabi is fresh-grated --not the reconstituted powder. They use pink rock salt - just one of those cool things that I can't taste any difference in, but still is cool to see the hunk of salt on the sushi bar.
