Stopped by for lunch and had a great meal. The baby octopus karaage was delicious-I highly recommended! The lunch bentos are excellent value. My Chirashi bento was incredibly fresh and came with miso soup and salad, while my cousin loved the Salmon Teriyaki. We also shared the Shrimp Tempura, and all the food was delicious. Our server, Jose, was fantastic--professional, warm, and friendly. My only complaint is that the music was a bit too loud for lunchtime conversation. Kappo Miyabi is a cute little Japanese restaurant near downtown Santa Monica. In general, I enjoy the quality of their fish as well as their various kushiyaki, as well as some of the unique dishes they have (like stone pot dishes). During our most recent visit, they were running a lunch gozen promotion, where you could get a kibako filled with small portions of various dishes for $35. This meal was absolutely gorgeous when it came out, and the portions were super reasonable for the price point. I really appreciated the uniqueness of this lunch offering, and hope that Kappo Miyabi continues this special as we would definitely return for this alone. Personally I opted for the salmon hijiki rice pot, which came out piping hot and had a decent amount of salmon on it. The rice on the bottom got a little burnt and crispy, which I love. I appreciated that the sauce came on the side, because it allowed me to control how much I wanted on my dish. Parking can definitely be tricky, but if you are coming on any day but Sunday, you can park at the Santa Monica library, which is less than a block away, and walk. Parking at the library is $2 for the first two hours. Otherwise, personally I have never had too much trouble finding metered street parking--you might just have to walk a bit more. Service was just okay. Didn't stand out to me in a good or bad way. read more

Well, we ordered the miso eggplant again. It was not as good today. (I hate it when restaurants are not consistent.) My mom still loves the crispy rice with avocado. My dad thinks the yellowtail sashimi and the tempura are great. Meanwhile, I tried the udon today. It was dense. It was like they made broth, and then they just left all the used onions and chicken in it. The noodles were good (but you can buy good udon noodles frozen, ready-to-eat at any Japanese market). Came by on a Tuesday at around 3. They're having happy hour all day on weekdays, but that definitely didn't stop us from racking up a bill! Not because it was expensive but just cause everything was delicious. We ordered the mixed tempura, several different skewers, two different handrolls, and probably more (my fiance and I love to eat). The tempura I ate was probably the highest quality tempura I've had in years, and all of the skewers were tender and the right level of smoky. I also love the ambiance here- they really decked it out with a lot of Japanese decorations, and it really mimics that izakaya feel. My only complaint is the consistency- I think the first peach highball I ordered looked exactly like the picture. I think the owner or someone else who's a manager made it for me- it was beautiful, and had a nice color gradient going on and wasn't too heavy on the peach. But the next highball I ordered was waaaay heavier on the peach and was a uniform orange color even though the server who made it said he just followed exact measurements. My tempura the second time I ordered it wasn't as hot and fresh either (though it was still good). Just something to consider when coming here, but I think overall I'd be back. read more

We have visited Kappo Miyabi a number of times in the past 5 years and have always enjoyed the food. It's close to the beach and the ambience is hip. We love the hand roll DIY boxes - it's as much sushi as a chirashi order but you make your own rolls with the fish and rice. So good! read more

The tempura is to die for. The beef sukiyaki was both delicious and filling. My girlfriend loved the cute tables, both open and some in hidden spaces. The closed in patio was private and airy and a perfect spot if you're cooking at the table. The private room is spacious and likely holds 10 people. Our servers were polite and helpful. I had a party of 4 and service was a bit strange at first because we were given 2 iPads to order on but they weren't connecting with each other so we couldn't see what we were truly ordering. This is a super cute spot! I love the decor in here with all the flowers and the japanese style like seating in some of the areas. We came on a Saturday around 3:00PM and it wasn't busy at all - we were seated right away. We got the wagyu gyoza - these were okay. I don't like the meat really stands out as wagyu so I don't think this is worth the price. Also the gyoza weren't like typical gyoza, it was fried more like deep fried so the whole thing was very crunchy and fried on the outside. I like a more traditional style crispy gyoza where just the bottom is crispy. I think this would make this dish better! We also got the yellowtail jalapeno and the fish tasted fresh - the sauce was good too. The tempura rock shrimp was a good portion although I wish it was actually coated in the sauce instead of on the side. It was a bit lacking in flavor because of it. We got quite a few skewers! The bacon wrapped shrimp was not very good. The shrimp was really overcooked so it wasn't soft at all and you really had to chew it. The wagyu was okay - it needed a touch of salt and it tasted soft but almost too soft? The pork sausage was tasty but honestly tasted like a good hot dog. The pork belly had good flavor but could've been a bit more tender. The black miso cod was delicate but the flavor wasn't there like with the seabass. We put lemon on it but it just didn't taste like much. Favorites: Chilean Sea Bass skewer - We reallyyyy enjoyed this one! It was such a tender fish that didn't taste fishy at all and the char on it was perfect because it had that good smoky grill flavor. Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice - I've had a lot of these from a lot of places! This is probably the 2nd best one I've had. The rice under is very, very crispy which is how it should be! The tuna on top was fresh and a good portion and I liked the jalapeno on it. I think it could've used a little less sauce. We did order a good amount and premium items but this place is really expensive because our bill came out to just under $300 and we got everything pictured plus sake & 2 sodas. We sat in for a graduation lunch. We originally made a reservation for a later time, but the staff were able to fit us in way earlier. We ordered our mains and they gradually came in after about 11 - 18 minutes. All of the mains were decently hot and exceptional. The hand rolls were a standout, the flavors of the shrimp rolls and the rainbow rolls were phenomenal. We asked them for another ipad because 4 people on one ipad was just a bit much. FYI you can call for service through the ipad. Honestly, they are a bit overpriced. My bento box was over $30 and I can get something pretty similar elsewhere for less and the same quality. Also, I felt like the service was a little slow. Everything came out around the same time other than my bento box. I think everyone was almost done with the meal by the time mine came out. And then we waited quite a long time for dessert to the point that we were going to cancel it if they didn't get started on making it yet. What an amazing place to celebrate Mother's Day! Our daughter treated us for mom's day and couldn't be happier. Their service was good--friendly staff! They have a separate section on the side with two tables. I believe each table can seat up to 9 people. We ordered 3 different skewers (wagyu, Chilean sea bass and pork belly). The wagyu was so tender and the sea bass was flavorful. We also ordered the yellow tail roll and its sauce was very refreshing. The black cod served with 3 sides (rice, mashed potatoes and salad) is a must! Looking at the $45 price might be seem pricey but they portion is big. The food is subpar and not authentic while being extremely expensive. We should have known when we walked in at 1:30 and the entire restaurant was empty. The bluefin don is $30 with 5 very sad looking and thin pieces of fish and some paltry sides. They claim the fish are freshly shipped in everyday but the fish before us says otherwise. For the lunch set, it's $35 and everything is very hard. Agadashi tofu is supposed to be very soft and silky, theirs is like a rock. For the sukiyaki, there's no flavor at all and the veggies taste like tap water. The beef was also very hard and stiff. Overall an extremely over priced and subpar experience for the food that you are getting. Total was $132.90 before tips. Would definitely recommend you visit another Izakaya because you can most definitely get substantially better for the same price or cheaper. read more
