We stopped at Kappy's for a quick meal on our way to the movies. They are known for cheesesteaks, burgers and hotdogs but I love their eggplant parm sub - they top it with peppers and onions (and usually mushrooms but not for me) and the eggplant is crispy - def a bit greasy made to order with a great cheese and sauce ratio and really tasty soft bread. My husband ordered a burger with pastrami on top and our son said his tastebuds liked the burger a lot. He also said they didn't put enough onion on it but there was a lot of lettuce. It's basically a stand with some covered picnic tables outside - but we always enjoy it when we stop. read more

Kappy's is an institution, its well know all over the state of Florida its even know from outside the state as well thats how famous they are when you been around as long as Kappy's has been around a whopping 55 years serving the patrons of Central Florida. Becoming a central Florida tradition that just keeps serving of deliciously delicious subs, hamburgers, specialty hotdogs, specialty french fries like sweet potato fries, and milkshakes galore. Don't miss out on this local gem in Maitland! I'd driven by this place so many times meaning to check it out and finally stopped in this weekend. I had the Philly Cheesesteak with fries. Their fries are waffle fries which are my favorite. They were crispy and delicious. The Philly was flavorful and topped with provolone cheese and banana peppers (you have a choice of peppers to choose from). We also got a side of onion rings which were perfectly cooked and tasty. The service is friendly and quick! I also didn't know they had seating inside but they have a few counter seats in addition to picnic tables outside. I live in California however every time I come to Florida Kappy's is the spot! I've just learned they are closing! I'm so sorry to hear this. I remember as a little girl walking from across the street and laying down a quarter at the train track having lunch and then picking up the quarter after lunch. I'm so so so sorry you all are closing. I've brought my kids here visiting from California and telling them what amazing memories my husband and I have had. I have heard and read about this place and it happened to across the street from my spa. This is between a diner and dive. Been in business since I was born, wow. That makes this a true staple to the orlando area. A lot is take out business and they have picnic tables outside. I got the in the right time, not to busy. I went inside and I think they seat around 10-15 people at a counter. I got a hamburger and waffle fries. Both was delisc. It's a thin patty and had good flavor to it. The prices are very reasonable. Holy moly Maverick!!! Stopped in today for a samich and was blown away!!! This has that old timey diner feel and friendliness that doesn't seem to exist anymore. 2 of us stopped in and got cheese steaks, loaded with mushrooms onions peppers on the most incredible roll... Soft flavorful and it sucked up all the tummy juices that leaked from the meat and veggies... Paired with waffle fries... My day couldn't get any better!!! The menu is huge and has something for everyone, there are even veggie options! Small diner swivel seats inside at the counter, maybe 10 or so... and picnic bench and umbrella seating outside.. fountain drinks are Coke products and the conversation has no brand... Everyone should have their own Kappy's experience, they're an Orlando institution of sorts. This small diner style sandwich shop is a blast from the past. Basic, no frills subs, and sandwiches here. Fresh dropped fries. Coarse customer service used to be part of the menu but I haven't seen that in years. Everyone was so nice and helpful and attentive today. Philly was tender and juicy and nice. Just right sized too. And loving that steamed bun! I wonder about the hand spun shakes for next time. Lots of parking out back. Order from the front window or shoe horn yourself onto stool inside. Solid four stars (see note below) for a place that I would be in love with if it were closer to my home. We first heard about Kappy's from the Hungry Florida Man series on Facebook (subscribe if you haven't!). Seeing the place on video reminded me of a good, local, hole in the wall kind of place that you would find up north. We arrived just after lunch time (maybe 1245) on Saturday with the three minions in tow. There was plenty of seating available outside and only a few seats inside. It was perfect weather, so we soaked up the sun. There was only two people in line in front of us and a handful waiting for orders. The line went pretty quick. The smallest minions ordered a burger (fresh, not frozen) $5, Hot Dog $3.15 and The oldest minion had her first ever Philly (about $7). I had one loaded and the Mrs had a crispy chicken sandwich (maybe $6). The food took about 15 minutes to come be ready, but this is by no means a complaint. This is a small place, with a small kitchen. Don't come expecting to get fast food. That is not what it is. It came all wrapped and sacked. We opened up and ate at the table. The cheese steaks were the perfect amount of meat, cheese and grease. My loaded Philly came with some banana peppers, which gave a nice little bite. My daughter KILLED hers, so I assume she gives a thumbs up. The burger was nice and fresh, plain as ordered. It actually had some red, which goes to show that it actually comes with some thickness. The hot dog was a typical NY dog. The onion rings reminded me of the old days of Circus Circus or Stewarts in NJ. Overall, this place did exactly what it needed to do. Five hours later and I still cannot think of dinner. Upon further review, I was thinking of why this place was a four star. Normally, "there is always room for improvement," but this place hit everything it needed to. The service was good and efficient. The food was fresh and tasty. It was clean. It was cheap. $40 fed the whole family. This is really five stars. We will be back. read more

So, it's 6:30 on a Saturday night and my husband tells me he has a craving for a "good" hot dog. I googled hot dogs near me and found that everything will be closing before we could get there. Just then our daughter called me, and I told her about his craving, and she immediately told me about the best hot dogs ever at Kappy's. She was totally correct! Foot long hot dogs, split lengthwise and grilled. There was a generous list of toppings available. We chose the chili and grilled onions along with our daughter highly recommended milkshake. She told us they only use the best ingredients, and we have to agree what a difference top grade ingredients make. I recently had a milkshake at a place that has shake in its name and was totally disappointed at what once was "the place" to go for a shake has gone downhill. There is a reason a restaurant has been around since 1934 and my guess is because it cares about what they serve. I heard the hamburgers and Philly Cheesesteak are also awesome. read more

Wildly underwhelmed here. 3 stars for the kind service and very soft fresh bread but a big flat MEH to the rest. My discerning palette was quite disappointing by the following: onion rings that tasted pre frozen and lacked life, mushrooms that appeared canned, "philly" style meat that could not have been fresh sliced, a poor cheese to meat ratio, poorly distributed seasoning (got many very salty bites of sub), the lingering pungent taste of dried oregano on my dissatisfied tongue. The overall freshness was good in spite. Portions are adequate. But the overall experience was not worth the price or calories. If you want greasy but delicious subs for a hangover, this is your place. It is an older spot which I hear has been around forever, so when you pull up it doesn't look like anything much, but it is a cute old-school set up. The only reason I'm not giving it five stars is that I noticed that the grill was not thoroughly cleaned and I'm not sure if it's because they had just made a sandwich or if it had been left there for a while. But I see that is a common theme in other peoples' reviews also. It also took over five minutes for the person working the counter to even arrive at the counter since they may have been in the back or preoccupied. This is a fun little dining experience they have indoor and outdoor seating their food is very good and I've had several things on the menu I prefer the Big Ben which is a bacon cheeseburger with chopped steak on top. It was just barely ok. Cheesesteak needed more cheese and was supremely salty. 20 min later I still taste salt in my mouth. Onion rings were 95% breading not even sure I tasted onion when eating them. Root beer float was the best thing. But what really knocked this down was watching an employee walk in the back no gloves, grab a frozen chicken patty with his bare hands, bring it up front, then be told it wasn't needed and he proceeded to walk back and put it in the freezer again. Kappy's feels like the kind of place you would stop at on vacation and then talk about for years afterward. How lucky for us in Central Florida to have it right in our backyard. The staff is always friendly and helpful and the sandwiches are consistently delicious - the softest bread and tastiest dressing. They have a couple of industrial fans and a covered patio so even eating outside in the summer isnt terribly uncomfortable. I had a Philly Cheese Steak with onions and mushrooms, fries and a drink "the special" it was not good at all and it was $14.00. It looked like an 8" sub, it was over cooked, had very few onions and tge mushrooms were only on top of the meat. For something that expensive, I expected much better food.
