Came here for 20 years when I lived in Folsom, Ca and it's still as wonderful. Food is fresh and made to order. Coffee is delicious and you have a choice of dark or light roast. It is refreshing to see a cafe of this type doing well, especially given its somewhat remote location. That said, the only complaint I had was the pricing. Everything seems very expensive. For reference, we ordered one plain croissant, a house coffee and a Chai tea, which came to about $16.50. I know everything is ridiculously expensive now, but at those prices, including numerous breakfast items over $20.00 each, we won't be visiting again soon. We got there on a Saturday around 10:45am and it was pretty busy, but the line to order at the register moved quickly so we only ended up waiting 10-15 minutes. There are limited vegetarian/vegan options - I ordered the breakfast croissant sandwich and requested to sub the bacon with avocado, but was told avocado would be a $4 upcharge and that I could get spinach instead. I was a little surprised by this since bacon seems more comparable to avocado than spinach. Nonetheless, I ordered the sandwich with spinach and fruit on the side and my friend got the green goddess sandwich. Our orders were ready within 15-20 minutes. Breakfast croissant sandwich (2.5/5): Croissant was tasty! However, the scrambled eggs inside were underseasoned - as a whole, the sandwich lacked flavor. Fruit was mostly sweet which was nice. I was not that full after finishing the sandwich so considering the $21 price point, it didn't feel like great bang for buck. Green goddess sandwich (3.5/5): Good portion size! Friend said the ingredients tasted fresh. However, similar to the breakfast croissant sandwich, the dish could have used more seasoning. Overall, I don't think I would come back to Karen's Bakery for their savory entrees as there are not many vegetarian options, substitutions are limited, and the food could have been more flavorful. Today's standout was the orange miso glazed salmon with orzo pasta salad. The orzo was served cool, offering the perfect contrast to the warm salmon, and the flavors just worked. The mix of asparagus, peas, and edamame was a trio I didn't know I needed. We also tried the tuna melt, which was hearty and flavorful, though a touch salty for my taste. Been going to Karens off and on for at least 15 years. The food is and always has been very good, and the vibe is good (sometimes loud though) However, the last 3 times we've gone there, the service has been lacking. If you're going to have a leisurely breakfast or lunch and have a long time to spend, it's probably still a good place for you. If you are interested in grabbing a quick lunch, or picking up a lunch to eat elsewhere, Karen's is NOT the place for you. Last time I went there to grab lunch, I ordered something from the pre made salad/sandwich case. The lady at the register rang it up and handed me a number. Turns out she can't just grab it and give it to me. That's someone else's responsibility, who was either on break, doing something else or extremely busy. When I finally gave a nudge that I had to get going, that person finally showed up and got my sandwich (it was at least 10 minutes which isn't unreasonably long, but for a pre made salad or sandwich doesn't meet industry standards or customer expected wait time). Today, I ordered avocado toast to go. It took 21 minutes. The Cafe wasn't that busy. I spoke with some folks who were eating in and having trouble getting their orders. They were upset that the wait time was very long, and one of their orders got "delayed." The guy with the delayed order asked for a refund because he had to go back to a class or meeting, and one minute later, his sandwich arrived. We used to order on line for pickup, but haven't been able to do so recently. Sooo If you've got time, still a good place to go. If you're on a schedule, I recommend you make other plans and/or just drive to the store to grab a lunch to go. read more

Drip coffee and pastry was given to us before we walked off to our table. The rest of the dishes were brought to us. Disappointed there wasn't fresh squeezed orange juice, I always look for that. The pastry selection was ginormous. My friend toddler loved the sour cream blueberry muffin. He KILLED it. It was very moist. Our dishes were very delicious. We split two plates. Open face tuna melt- our favorite. It was perfectly seasoned and salad was delicious. Philly cheesesteak- it was very good initially until we got further in, the aioli sauce was over whelming and the bread was getting really wet. It needed to be less drenched with aioli, and I love aioli. Coffee was very good, it's free refills, but you need to walk up to the register. We both enjoyed our meals previously I had ordered the Napa chicken sandwich from the deli case and I actually think I would go for that option instead of the hot Melt in the picture. My Matcha was extra Matcha with maple syrup, which tasted really good unfortunately I was charged extra for the extra Matcha as well as for the side of fruit, although I was not informed of this up charge before. I tried this bakery, all was looking nice a plain sight. Their sweets are fairly good, taste was great, the place looks nice and clean, variety was good. I'm giving three starts because of their service. The people at front seemed poorly welcoming customers. A huge thing was their food handling, I was upset when the cashier also handled my pastries, put them inside the bag not washing or sanitizing his hands after touching money. Everything always tastes so fresh and great quality. I love their granola too, which is homemade and I recommend getting it with their yogurt & fruit, so good. Their sandwiches are always amazing. Today I had the grilled chicken sandwich. My Mom had the quiche. The quiche is very delicious. The sandwich was huge, had to bring half home, and it came with wedge fries, which were piping hot. This walk-up, counter-order bakery and coffee shop offers eggs, sandwiches, salads, and baked goods. After placing your order, you're given a number and can you get yourself water at the end of the counter and head across the busy dining area to the cream and sugar table if you want that for your coffee or tea. Indoor seating is usually full, but there are several outdoor tables available as well. When we visit with our group of five, we typically manage to find a table within a reasonable wait time before our meal arrives. However, the staggered delivery times for meals is a problem. Both times and I have come if somebody in our party ordered eggs they end up getting their food delivered after people who have ordered avocado toast, or other items not requiring the area, have long finished their meal. This is a problem. I don't think I'd recommend bringing hungry impatient, children or elderly people here because of the inconvenience of the stagger delivery of the food and constant having to get up to check if they forgot about you or to get your coffee refilled, etc. but for young hipsters, it's a cool place . read more

I used to really enjoy Karen's, but there are a few reasons they're no longer 5/5 for me. The service has never been anything stellar. Today though was just the worst it has been in awhile. I'm frustrated that they prompt you to tip at payment. I would rather tip after the service. I think this could be why the service is often lacking. The woman who took my order seemed unhappy and like I was bothersome. Another lady brought out a drink for my mom, but it was made incorrectly. She kind of argued with my mom, but then went and made it correct. The prices have also gone up without an increase in quality, so that is frustrating. Things I do like: I love the vast array of tea options and that they are organized via caffeine content. I also love the granola and yogurt and some of the various pastries. The location is nice, and I enjoy sitting out on the patio. Just know that you may not get great service while you're here and that it can be pricey. Good every once in awhile. read more

The chocolate was only few pieces. Not the bakery croissant that I hoped. - mixed berry pie: the pie was good but the slice was so small for the price. I originally planned to go to Folsom Historic District for a few specific shops but I just so happened to find parking right next to this bakery.....it was almost like fate, I tell ya! Got some bakery sweets to take home. Cinnamon nut roll: got this mainly due to FOMO as there was only one left in the display case. A bit too sweet for my liking as there was also drizzled glaze on top of the thin glaze coating ("yo dawg, I heard you like sugar glaze" #ancientmeme). I liked how croissant-chewy-flaky the roll was though. The whole thing kinda reminded me of a flattened cronut. I can see why it's a popular item here. Blueberry cheese cream danish: decent danish that really didn't need the crumble topping; it just added even more sweetness (and it was already sweet enough without it). Butterscotch oatmeal cookie: I think this is my favorite one out of the bunch! Not overly sweet; had enough butterscotch taste without going too overboard. A little crispy from the oatmeal, which I enjoyed. This cookie is the cakey kind and it was like eating the top half of an oatmeal muffin. Delish. Cozy cafe vibes here. I love Karen's Bakery. I work nearby, and every occasion that calls for a special treat also calls for Karens. I annoy people at work on the daily because I sit and dream aloud about the Grilled Chicken Sandwich with the peppers and cheese on it, truly a delight. I will say, this comes with the choice of a side salad or skillet potatoes, and the potatoes are hit and miss sometimes as far as how they are cooked. Sometimes the sizes are too incongruent, and so the level of doneness and level of seasoning varies. As far as baked goods go, Karen's is simply the best in the area. They make this Blueberry Cream Cheese Pastry that haunts my dreams, but it must be popular because it's often gone by lunch time. Every pastry has been sublime though, I love the danishes with the fruit drizzle as well. We also got a custom cake done here for my wife's birthday this year, and dude...holy &$!*. Carrot cake is already our favorite dessert, but Karen's brings it to another level. It has this fresh marmalade jam on top, and the frosting is light and not-at-all cloying. They understandably need a good deal of time in advance to order one, so plan ahead. Inside is lovely and clean, but often quite loud if busy. I prefer to sit on the patio, which is spacious and has never been too rowdy. The only real downside of Karen's is the cost. I understand the rent is likely high, and they hopefully pay their staff well, but it is sometimes alarmingly expensive. I track my budget, and was shocked to see that in the last year, I have spent over $500 here--yet have only been a handful of times. That said, you get what you pay for in my experience.
