I ended up at Karl's when the coffee shop across the shop was unexpectedly closed one morning and I wasn't disappointed with my experience here. It's an old school bakery. A huge display of pastries and bread (the pastry I had was very good). They have self-serve coffee that was great for my coffee-chugging self. And they had some limited breakfast and lunch food options that weren't fancy but were CHEAP. The staff was exceptionally great. Joking around with each other and their regulars. And I can see why they attract regulars. While I was there a group of older men were there for their regular breakfast and discussion of world affairs. It was a hoot to hear them talk. They do not have wi-fi so my quest to get some work done was sidetracked. Instead, I had a great pastry and lots of coffee and enjoyed the conversation of the people around me. read more

This place was exactly what I was expecting it to be, looking for a small spot to get a light breakfast with my husband and kid. They had pancakes for the little one, which was a good alternative to the donuts for her, also came with bacon. We got the cheese and ham stuffed croissant, which was buttery and flaky and didn't skimp on the ham and cheese. It was reasonably priced, also took a cupcake and sourdough rye bread home for later. Karl's is a part of historic Everett, having been around since the 40's! It's easy to see why between their delicious doughnuts (pershings are amazing) to macaroons to well made espresso drinks. We went in today to grab something sweet and were given wonderful service from a lovely blonde woman who was attentive and charming. I highly recommend supporting this local gem. read more

Will not go back, had the worst customer service. Sat at a table, when the lady behind the counter just looked at us, I went up and asked if we order at the counter or the table since it was our first time. She said you order here then just looked at me, so I went over and grabbed a to go menu. Ordered some sandwiches and an apple fritter, coffee and water. Was given the apple fritter, immediately went back to the counter for a fork and knife so we could cut it up and split it among the 4 of us. Another lady was at the counter and told me she'd bring it out to me, several minutes later I had to go peek my head in the kitchen and ask if they could cut the apple fritter if they were not going to bring us any silverware. She said oh, and handed me a fork and a knife. While I was there I asked if we could get our coffee and waters, she said she'd bring it to the table. Went and sat down, shared our apple fritter. She then proceeded to bring 1 coffee (which is what we ordered) and 2 waters - um there were clearly 4 people at the table, rather than deal with another eye roll, we just shared the 2 waters. The worst part was the attitude as if we were bothering them by being in their restaurant/bakery, you'd think they'd try to be friendly however we were just treated like we were a nuisance. I called Karl's Bakery to order some traditional holiday Scandanavian treats. This was a special order that I place every year. I ordered it one day for a pick later in the same week. I was not disappointed and the staff there couldn't have been more friendly or helpful. I found out that I was the only one who ordered these treats and instead of telling me when I placed the order that they don't make these treats, they filled the order wonderfully. I want to be sure and thank the baker, and to both Hope and Sheila who assisted me with this order. They were very friendly and went above and beyond when it came to making sure I was happy with the order. They even offered to help me out with my order (which was a handful), but it was raining and I didn't want to take them away from the Bakery, but it was so nice to be asked. Karl's changed ownership late last year and I'm sorry to say it's gone downhill since. We used to eat lunch there at least once a week but now it's off our list. Their donuts are great though, and their old fashioned are among the best I've eaten, but they are now home of the "incredible shrinking danish". The size is probably half of what it was previously but the price did not drop in kind. I think it's called "portion control". The last hamburger I ordered had a thin, plain brown bun where before they used a delicious oatmeal bun. Maybe it was an off day, but I doubt it. Too bad. They made our beautiful and very tasty wedding, sheet cake! I am not a butter cream fan, but their butter cream is fresh & tasty. We combined the lemon & custard filling to make lemon custard - very good, with vanilla cake. I attempted to add a picture of our cake to their Facebook page, but because I am not a skilled FB user, I am not sure that I did it correctly, but hopefully! Okay - any bakery that has homemade treats for dogs for sale gets a thumbs up out of the gate. But then take one look at their Apple Fritters (and at THAT price ?!!) and you will instantly understand why I am a fan. Outdoor seating in the summer is a huge plus for me since I am always looking for a place where I can have breakfast in the middle of my morning walk with our SharPei. The Bakery is the star here. Jeanette took my order by phone to have a cake delivered to the Women's Pavilion in Everett where my niece had her baby today! Jeanette gave me a tour by phone of the baked offerings for today, and helped me decide on two specialty cakes which were available and fresh and will be delivered TODAY! The pricing was not just good but TERRIFIC! And Jeanette's service was outstanding. As soon as my sister calls me and sends photos and tells me how delicious the cake is (bummer I live out of state I want some!) - I will write a second review on the quality of the cake! Worst service ever! I ordered my son's second birthday cake here I sent them the picture of the cake I wanted I picked up the cake an hour before the party and it was NOT even close to what I ordered I am so disappointed! I tried to talk to the owner and they tried to say that is what I wanted if I wanted that why in the world would I send you a picture of something completely different come on people get it together! Yummy food, delicious cakes and friendly service. We stopped in for a quick coffee but all the cakes and brownies were so tempting we decided to sit in and eat something. Then we saw the food menu. I used to come here back when I went to Everett High. brought my boss here for breakfast this morning. took way too long for our food, and the quality was not at all what it used to be. for my boss, it took her 15 minutes to bring toast out after our food was already served cold. we ordered 2 waters as well and the lady didn't even bother telling us that we had to get it ourselves. needless to say, this place is probably only good for donuts.... as long as those haven't changed from 10 years ago!! read more

Watched them talk to everyone else and catch up on their daily lives while our food sat on the counter and got cold....never did receive our drinks and watched the regulars walk in and get served immediately. Please, please do NOT go here for a wedding cake. I went for a cake tasting in May 2011, and the woman there (I believe her name was Audrey) snapped at me and accused me of being an hour late for my appointment (impossible, as they told me over the phone that my 11:30 appointment was the earliest they could do, and I was there at 11:15). They handed me a plate of cakes, fillings and icings to sample and the cakes were incredibly dry and tough. The samples tasted like they were three weeks old! Also, the sample wedding cakes in the store showed poor craftsmanship and the pictures of their cakes looked outdated. Bad cake; rude people. If you are looking for a wedding cake, don't waste your time with this bakery. read more

Ordered a birthday cake for my niece. That cake was not edible. The buttercream frosting was way too sweet. The cake itself was moist but everyone left the frosting on the plate. Even the birthday girl who turned 11 and it's a kid they love sugar, wouldn't eat the frosting. read more

Ordered our wedding cake from them and it was super yummy and they delivered it to the venue. However, when we went for our consultation the guy had us leave the cake topper and when another lady delivered the cake, I asked where the cake topper was. She got upset that I left it at the bakery (as asked) and was grumpy. But overall, they were good. read more

Had their '2 Eggs, Hash browns & Toast with Bacon' breakfast this morning. I'm generally impressed with the quality of the restaurants in the area and Karl's is also pretty good. Service was fast and friendly. The atmosphere is cozy but not cramped. Coffee was average and self-service, which is sort of like a soda fountain-style feature but for coffee. The bacon is a little less-hearty (thin, but crispy) than other place's offerings but still had a good taste. Since this is a bakery I was looking forward to their sourdough toast but it turned out to be just your generic store-variety bread. Great hash browns. I also enjoyed one of their giant custard-filled donuts which was also good. Parking is excellent if you get there early. read more

I coordinate events that are often catered, and we'd never used Karl's Bakery before so we thought we'd go local and try them out. HUGE MISTAKE!!! We ordered breakfast for 30 people to be delivered between 8:30-8:45am. I called them at 9am to ask if they were about to arrive because the speaker needed to begin the training, and they hadn't even left the store yet. At 9:20am they called and were lost, asking me for directions. They arrived at 9:35am. The food was average greasy spoon quality, and just OK, but there was plenty of it. They were to come back and pick up their catering items, and bring to-go containers, at 1pm. At 1:40pm I called to ask if they were on their way and they said yes. Close to 2pm the co-owner/catering manager (female) showed up without to-go containers and stood there and talked and talked and talked in a very unprofessional manner about how her daughter was supposed to wake her up this morning and didn't which is why everything was late, and that she was sick but had handled all the food while prepping the night before. She also said that she was supposed to bring us pastries to apologize for being late, but she forgot those too. Then she spent more time going to a nearby store to buy to-go containers. In all they were about 1.5 hours late picking up the catering equipment. When I called to speak with them the next day about what happened, the woman was extremely rude and unapologetic. The male co-owner Derek emailed me and said he would deliver pastries as an apology. This morning he delivered day-old doughnuts to our office with a frown, and they were disgusting. I attempted to speak with him about his colleague's behavior but he seemed very disinterested in any feedback, and was generally unpleasant. We understand that everyone has an off day, but the continued disrespect after the "off day" cements the fact that we will never use them for catering again. read more

im totally impressed! i live in California and i wanted to surprise a friend that lives in Everett, WA. so ive been looking for great breakfast restaurants and cafes that do delivery , and so i found this and read all the reviews. reviews were awesome! so i decided to place an order for a delivery just for a single person. they said they dont normally do single delivery ,so i spoke to the manager and he accepted my order. they charge me for delivery with a very reasonable price! very impressive! great costumer service ! and my friend absolutely love their blueberry pancakes with bacon, and all the good stuff for breakfast! I recently went for coffee with friends. We had originally met at the coffee shop across the street and that shop was full. We walked across to Kari's to see what we thought. It is rather plain as others have said. But the gal behind the counter was very nice and polite and helpful. We were all glad to find a restaurant that was willing to let you sit and have regular coffee and a wonderful cookie from the bakery. We ended up staying quite awhile and even had refills on our coffee. (You serve yourself style). As we sat we started watching others food served and it all looked good. We were then aware of the complete menu and pleased to see you could get breakfast even late in the day. We also checked out the cake decorating books. Very pleased and plan to go back. One of the gals in my group said she was coming back to order cakes also. Give them a try unless you really like the atmosphere of expensive coffee drinks at Starbucks. read more

Wow. I don't know what happened to this place! I used to get lunch there (chef's salad, the period sandwich) quite a bit about five years ago before my office moved. Unfortunately, I brought my husband in to check it out on a whim. What a mistake. It still looks awful with the worst layout a restaurant could have. This time I went up to the window to order, and there was no reader-board, so I had to grab a paper menu from the counter (which the girl at the window grabbed out of my hand only to hand it back to me). Strange! They were serving breakfast but didn't have the breakfast menu out. My husband had to ask for it. We waited waaaay too long for a very simple breakfast, a salad, and coffee. We were not brought or even offered any water, they served me my entree salad about ten minutes before my husband's breakfast came out, they walked away without bringing us any utensils or napkins, and I had to ask again for coffee. The server/window girl told me she was new and this was her first Saturday (on which they were dead, there were only two other people there who were already eating). I thought, "Well, that may be true, but you could wing it just by considering the bare necessities YOU would need to eat a meal. Surely, at the very least, a fork." and she hadn't even asked me what kind of dressing I wanted for my salad. When she finally brought us coffee (also horrible, too strong, cheap beans we both agreed), she said, "I forgot to tell you that coffee is self-serve, sorry", to which I replied, "Well, I pointed out to you when I ordered that there was no regular coffee made. I asked you if both orange pots were decaf, you looked over, then told me yes. You also did not provide me with a cup - although, if you had, there would have been no coffee made for me to go get myself anyway." She walked away. That's right about the time I realized I was eating not-so-fresh lettuce which had turned color on every edge & partially dried out. I then lost my appetite. My husband's breakfast consisted of scrambled eggs (I'm assuming they were real), some colorless, barely cooked hash browns with no crispness or seasoning, the tiniest sourdough toast I've ever seen, and a thin, singular, previously frozen (possible microwaved) sausage patty. It costs $18 for this?! Needless to say, we did not finish our meals. And just as if I thought it couldn't get any worse, I inspected the cream I had already poured into the cup of coffee I had choked down and noticed it was beginning to separate and solidify in chunks to the sides of the metal container. That means it's old. Talk about yuck! They also had the audacity to offer us a punch card, as if we'd ever return. I don't know what these people expect when THEY go out to eat, casual or not, but this was beyond a nightmare. And it took so long that it wasted an hour of our day.
