I rarely leave reviews, but this experience was so disappointing that I felt compelled to share it. Several years ago, a friend purchased me a gift card to Kasai Salon. Shortly after receiving it, I became seriously ill and lost all of my hair. After years of treatment, my hair finally grew back, and last week I was finally ready to get a haircut. Before my appointment, I told Kasai that I had a gift card. When they attempted to process it, I was told it had "expired" and that they would not honor it. This was not a promotional certificate--it was a gift card that had been purchased for full value. I was told I would have to pay for my haircut. Kasai offered a "discount" if I paid by cash or Zelle, reducing the price from $159 to $140. I paid $100 in cash and $60 by Zelle and kept the unused gift card. Today I called simply to thank him for the haircut and to explain that I would speak with the friend who purchased the gift card. I also mentioned that my understanding is that California law does not allow purchased gift cards to expire. At no point did I mention legal action or threaten to sue. His attitude changed immediately. He became defensive, rude, and told me that if I wanted to pursue legal action, I should go ahead. Again, I had never mentioned anything about lawyers or lawsuits--I was simply trying to resolve the issue respectfully. What disappointed me most was not even the money. It was the way I was treated as a customer. Instead of listening or trying to resolve the situation, I was met with hostility and dismissed. I would strongly caution anyone considering purchasing a gift card from this business. If the recipient cannot use it for any reason for a period of time, you may be told it has "expired" and refused service. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this business, and I will be filing a complaint with the appropriate consumer protection agencies. read more

I came to Kasai after growing my hair for the past 3 or so years. I came in a bit nervous since it's been a while since I cut my hair, but Kasai and his team were very kind and welcoming. Having Asian hair, I've had some bad cuts with previous stylists. I was a bit indecisive about what style I wanted so I showed him a few pictures of what I wanted for my hair, and Kasai was able to adjust the hairstyle to fit my face more. Just had the best haircut of my life here! Kasai really takes his time to understand what you want and what looks best on you, individually. Trendy hair cuts don't always work with my hair type (thin, fine, and straight) but he was so skillful at taking into account my hair type, face shape, the amount of upkeep/styling I typically do, trends, and the photos I showed him and turned it all into one great hairstyle that feels customized for me. In Los Angeles there are many choices for fine quality service, but in Manhattan Beach, this is the only salon I'd recommend for top quality cut, color and styling. If you have the money, Kasai is well worth it, he's a legend in the industry, who likes our little beach town. He trains his stylists to take the same holistic humanistic approach to hair and color. The salon is not large or fancy. No on offers you coffee, like my old haunts in Beverly Hills, but It's very low key and pleasant. Was excited for my first haircut with Kasai. I specifically went over what I wanted, a really even and balanced mens hair cut with clean edges and thinned out for ease of styling. This is not what I got. Once home and after rinsing out the (awful) crunchy hair gel used (after I requested a lightweight wax) one side of my hair is 1/2 longer. Kind of annoying that after spending $115 dollars plus a $30 tip, I have to trim my hair to be balanced. To add, he had three chairs going at once so I didn't even receive undivided attention for that amount of money. This was my first experience at the salon, maybe pay a new client some needed attention to get it right? Just a thought. I will continue my search for a great stylist in the South Bay. My go-to hair stylist! Kasai is the absolute best in LA and knows exactly what to do with your hair while always taking your facial structure/features into consideration. I love that the actual haircut only takes him like 15min!! He's brilliant and innately gifted with hair. What I love about Kasai is that he listens to you and works with you on the cut you want. I find that a lot of stylists want to cut hair their way, but not Kasai. My gf/stylist moved to Portland so I went here today as a first time customer, and am now so in love, idk if I'll go anywhere else in the South Bay! Upscale, sleek & clean would be a few words I'd use to describe this place. Stylists and assistants are super friendly, ready to chat it up or let you relax and enjoy. Katsumi and Yvette did an amazing job on my hair! I have fine hair, so when it gets long it gets stringy, broken and frizzy af. Like any good shampooing, it was heavenly and felt soooo good. When cutting, he uses a different technique than I'm used to (nothing crazy radical, don't worry), but I'm def a believer now. He barely took any of my length, touched up layers & now my hair feels weightless, silky and SO healthy. Gave me some great tips on how to keep it that way, too! First of all, I love their location! Situated in the lovely Manhattan Beach above a restaurant, the salon has a beautiful view. The workers are pretty nice, from the lady that I met in the elevator up, to Juliet, the one who washed my hair before the cut. She was really friendly and we chatted it up for a bit. Might I add, she did a great job of washing my hair and making sure I was comfortable. I wish I had someone to wash my hair and massage my head all the time! My hairdresser was Jennifer, or Jenny as she introduced herself. When I first told her what I wanted she was very skeptical in doing so because she thought it would look bad on me. After some convincing, she finally agreed. Snip snip, chop chop, she started to cut my hair. One thing that was different was that she had me stand up for the first 10 minutes while she was cutting my hair. Hey, whatever works for her, I didn't mind. After about 50 minutes, my hair was done. I had her trim the length, layer it up, and cut straight bangs with longer sides. Then she thinned out my hair. I loved the end result! It was such a change because I never had straight bangs since I was forced to as a kid. My hair felt so much lighter, too! All my friends, family, coworkers & even strangers love my hair and constatnly compliments it. And most importantly, I love it myself! Great job! I will definitely be back. read more

Review for men's haircut. Came here for a cut from the man himself Mr. Kasai. Must say I left very disappointed for what bills itself as a top tier salon. After waiting 20 minutes for my appointment to start, I asked how much longer to start as he was still wrapping up a cut. The staff were very polite and got me started with a shampoo. My cut was very quick; buzz # 3 & 2 and some expert snips. 22 minutes, $100. I'm ok with waiting and quick haircuts, but I pay much less for both. I don't think he took my cut very seriously. I'm a scared puppy to go to anyone to get my luscious locks cut. It had been 3mths and I had been putting off doing it, suffering through split ends and over styling to hide the fact it had no shape left. But... I trusted my source and did my research on this guy. His resume is very impressive, people fly him all over just to have his master hands on their heads. So putting my faith in his hands I went to him. My hair is very straight and fine. He knew exactly what to do. I immediately felt safe as he described what he was going to be doing. In the end it is probably the best cut I can recall having, its modern, sophisticated, still long, but has amazing shape. I didnt even have to style it after washing it, its such a good cut. Just blow dried, little hair spray and I was set to go. A good cut makes life so much easier! Saves you time, and in the end time is money. ;) I also found his price point to be considerably low $120, since in his Beverly Hills Salon its $250, it really is a $250 hair cut for the price of $120. Kasai is great! The studio is very well managed. I've been to a lot of upscale salons where the staff is uptight and self important. The down to earth vibe of the staff makes Kasai stand apart from the rest. And they can make you a cappuccino while you are serviced! There is an outside lounge area that is nice and relaxing if you want to people watch from above. And Tiffany is great! She makes sure she knows how you want it and has an incredible sense of style! And she's got an awesome personality that makes the sitting in the chair experience enjoyable. The location is very cute. Kasai has been cutting my hair for over a decade. In my opinion he is the best hairstylist ever! I am always complimented on my hair and the best is that because of how well he cuts, I only have to get my hair trimmed once every six months. I go out of my way to follow Kasai because he is seriously that good!!!!! Just thought I'd post an update for anyone looking to get their hair done during these crazy times. I had my hair colored and cut on the patio at Kasai's salon. I kept my mask on the entire time, even though I was outside, and I felt extremely safe and happy (I was so overdue). The most embarrassing and humiliating experience. I scheduled a simple hair cut and requested the best, so I thought..the owner would be the correct choice. I am a breast cancer survivor. My hair has taken two years to grow just past my mid neck line. I was very excited for this appointment as I had trusted the name alone and the hopes the cost would reflect the service and end product. I was asked to leave after I didn't agree with what the owner suggested. I simply said, "no, that was not what I had had in mind." He then turned my chair and motioned me to leave his chair and salon. Now in tears and embarrassed by other clients seeing me is such a vulnerable state, I began to leave. I turned to him and said, "I'm was only trying to explain what I would like." He said, "I'm a professional hair stylist, not a therapist, I know what looks good and if you don't want to look good, then please leave." Never have I felt so embarrassed and humiliated. I simply was excited for an incredible hair cut. Sadly, I went in excited and left feeling horrible about myself. People that have gone through cancer know that your hair is very important. Upon arrival the staff was very friendly and offered me a beverage. The stylist and the salon were very clean and tidy. I had previously called to see if what i wanted done, which was a loose beach wave perm could be done and they said yes so i booked an appointment. When i got to the salon, i showed my stylist a picture of what i was looking for and told them it was my first perm so i was a bit nervous. He was very reassuring and friendly so i trusted him. Along the way i did every once in awhile ask him this is what is going to be done etc etc and he said yes. After it was all said and done, almost two hours later which i understand because these things must take awhile im sure, the perm i got was not what i was looking for. :/ i tried very hard to be direct about what i wanted and even provided imagery but alas my fears of a perm were not abated and it was not terrible by any means but it was not what i desired. I think it is still nice and dont hate it but what else could i have done to assure i was getting what i wanted? Also i understand i may have misread the pricing but damn was it expensive, which is also why i never usually do anything to my hair. I find this place to be completely overrated. I went for a haircut and was underwhelmed. I say it's a lot of ego and branding going on with the main stylist, Kasai, but too little substance. The cut was mediocre at best. The whole experience was like visiting a cafeteria. I had a completely inexperienced person shampoo my hair on arrival and her fingers never made contact with my scalp. I had to ask her rewash it and do more than the surface of my hair. It almost seemed like she was afraid to touch my scalp. After Kasai cut my hair, he again dumped me with the same inexperienced assistant for the blow dry and flat iron while he jumped over to cut another man's hair in the station next to me. Again, the assistant had zero idea how to use a flat iron on hair. When I asked her to carry the flat iron all the way through to the ends of my hair, she left and found someone else to do it (then she stood nearby and watched as if she was learning). When the flat ironing was complete, my bangs were hanging in my eyes. I had to ask Kasai to come back and finish cutting my hair. Very disappointing experience and I won't be back. read more

This is the best salon in the South Bay, and I've tried a few. The international professionalism shines through, and its self evident by the way you look and feel after even one visit. When a salon is so good that you need not make a request or suggestion and you walk out looking amazing then you've got a winner. They aren't the least expensive salon in the South Bay, so expect to pay for looking your best. You won't regret it! read more

Had my first experience at Kasai this week. My hair was in desperate need of attention, kind to the point of embarrassed to enter the salon. When I called the gal who received my call was amazing!! So sorry I forgot her name, anyway she made chitchat so there was no dead silence- she was excited to have me come in and made it easy and comfortable in making the appointment ( I called at 11:30 am and was in the chair at 2pm sameday) Deep breathe and enter! Upon entering the welcome was genuine, lots of activity in the salon, she introduced me to Jason who was going to be my saving hair grace for the next few hours. He was quick and confident in making recommendation and I was quick and o be at ease. When I spoke about a trim, Jason as a colorist does not do cuts however he asked salon owner Kasai to do a consultation. Obviously, he knows what he is doing and spoke knowledgeable on how my hair was to be cut. I watched him cut people's hair, talk to the staff and help teach the assistants. Class act. He took time to style clients hair and everyone looked awesome, the men that came in had expert cuts and left with the hair wax that was recommended. Back to Jason- he did my highlights , easy to talk to and super efficient and organized. Kasai has time to do my cut and style and Jason waited patiently for me to finish. It was a nice touch to have the hand off as well as knowing he did not just do my color and left, nice!!! Pricing was competitive to what I have seen in the past, instantly felt like it will be my place to go for my hair needs. Tips are cash only and great for people watching ;) read more

After having the haircut of my lifetime from Kasai, heads turned when I walked into my yoga studio. I read about Kasai in a South Bay magazine for mostly real estate and knew right away that it was time to change my 25 year old style. Today I go back after four months for a second cut and it still looks beautiful. The lifes2good Viviscal vitamins he gave me helped with the little shorts hairs that sprout up on my crown and hairline, it's all grown in now. He listened to everything I had to say, my husbands wish that I can still pull it back and up. While standing up, Kasai looked at it from every angle and together he advised what would look best with my natural white, silver, gray hair. Much of the cutting of layers was done standing up, when he was finished it looked like I had twice as much hair. My cut was sassy, sexy and took years off my appearance, friends thought I had a facelift, hahahaha! It was worth every penny for this experience and way much cheaper than a facelift. Came here for a hair cut because they were having a fundraiser for the Tsunami incident. The ad SPECIFICALLY stated that KASAI WILL BE CUTTING HAIR FOR $50 (I usually pay $50 for my haircuts) and all profits will be donated to the victims in Japan. However, this was not actually the case. Some assistant girl came behind me while I was waiting for Kasai and said that he will not be cutting my hair because he was too busy with other clients so she will be taking care of me today. Woman, I don' t know you. Why do you think I will let you touch my hair? I complained and Kasai came and seemed annoyed. He was pretty much kind of bitching at me for complaining so I told him that I came here specifically for him to cut my hair and if he's gonna give me an attitude, he should give me my $50 back. He tried calming me down and started the haircut. Honestly, the haircut was whatevers.. I didn't even see much of a difference. He's lucky this was a "fundraising" event because you know I'm getting my money back if it wasn't. UPDATE 3/2/12: Kasai, you always have something to say don't you? Kasai is the name of the salon and also the owner. He was highly recommended to me by a co-worker. I have been absolutely faithful to my hairdresser for the past 9 years (and I hope she doesn't read this!), but wanted to get a Brazillian Blowout, which they don't do at my salon. Kasai was having a deal where the Brazillian Blowout was discounted if you get a haircut with it. Since I was saving some money from this combo deal, I decided to get my haircut by Kasai. You know those situations, when you save money so you decide to spend more? :D. I go to the beautiful salon in Manhattan beach, and the first thing he asks me is, "You are the one who is also getting a Brazillian Blowout?" I said, "Yes." He said, "You don't need one, and I don't want you to waste your money on it." Fair enough, I have straight hair, but I wanted it straighter. You also must know how that is... He said, "You just need a good haircut." Some reason when it became reality that I was getting my haircut by someone else other than my usual salon, I got very nervous and panicked. He explained what my haircut would look like and make sure I was comfortable with it. He considered my height and face shape. I thought this was very interesting and actually made me feel at ease. I got an awesome shampoo then was ready for the cut. He cut while we were both standing up. I heard this was a technique they do at Fredric Fekkai (where he also worked). My haircut was exactly how he explained it. Nice cut, easy to maintain and won't need another cut for 3-4 months. Even though it may be a little pricey, it is worth it because the cut is so good, you don't need to come in for a few months (and he even tells you this too). He is quick and cuts with such precision. Not really part of the review, but he is also kind of hot. So easy on the eyes while getting your hair cut. Parking: This is one piece of advice I wish someone told me. I actually do not know Manhattan Beach well enough- and just know about the meter parking and this one little lot. His salon is in this outdoor mall, and I guess they have parking for up to 8 hours and a lot of it. I would use that lot the next time I go there. I circled around to find a meter, and was worried that I would be done in time before the meter ran out. It all worked out because I didn't have the 2 hour Brazillian Blow out. read more
