Good bakery in a great location. We ended up here to get dessert after leaving another local restaurant in the area. Got in and checked out all the different types of dessert they offered. We wanted to get it to go so decided on a Chocolate chip cheesecake (which was good, creamy, good flavor), crème brulee (Phenomenal, sweet, custardy, just great) and a chocolate cake that was just dry, lacked something, so we didn't finish it. But great visit overall, nothing to really complain about. Service was really good as well, and for it being 8pm that bakery was pretty packed. Of the many things we ordered were the Caldo Gallego (Spanish soup - super good - a meal on its own); Jamon Serrano Sandwich (we customized it a little bit from the regular ingredients - still ended up to be delicious). From the bakery items we ordered quite a few items including Flan (vanilla custard - king of), palmeritas, and so many others. It is an adventure going here and just try the many options available. This was the best place for inexpensive treats and sandwiches in San Juan! We stayed near Kasalta and happened to stop in there for lunch on our first day in Puerto Rico. It was so good that we ate there for one meal almost every single day after that for the rest of our trip! Needless to say, everything was delicious :-) The ambiance of Kasalta is very bustling, with many lines of people ordering and waiting, but everything moves rather quickly, so don't let that scare you away. The pastries/sandwiches are relatively inexpensive, and the portions are LARGE! My friend and I could split one sandwich and be full at the end (well, also we were saving some room for desserts though, of course). Because of the large portion sizes, we'd just split a different sandwich every visit, so we got to try a lot! Our favorite sandwiches were: Empanada Gallega de Pollo - I would compare this most closely to a chicken salad sandwich. But this isn't your momma's chicken salad! -Verdict: This was my favorite! Very chunky bits of chicken and super flavorful, with minimal breadiness due to the sandwich's pressed nature. Medianoche - A pressed, sweet bread sandwich filled with pork, ham, swiss cheese, pickles, mayonnaise and mustard. -Verdict: Delish! The sweet bread and pickles help balance out the meatiness of this. Cuban - I'm sure many know what a Cuban sandwich is. Kasalta's is pretty similar to their Medianoche, but without the sweet flavor to the bread (using Cubano bread instead). But that did change the flavor quite a bit! -Verdict: As I said, it has similarities to the Medianoche, but aside from the lesser amount of sweetness, the bread also gives a different mouth-feel. While both sandwiches are pressed, the Medianoche bread is a little more "soft" than the Cuban's. So it's just what you are feeling like that day! We also tried a bakery item or two each time we stopped in (We might have gained ten pounds each, but it was worth it!) Our favorite bakery treats were: -Tarte de Fresas - A delicious strawberry tart that came in a cute little hardened chocolate shell. -Tirathe Strawberry Biszcocho - A super moist chocolate cake with a strawberry topping. -Tiramisu - I don't think I need to describe this one, but I'll just say, it's one of my favorite things to order ANY place I go, and this one did not disappoint! Coffee - They also make really delicious coffee drinks. Whether you like it plain/black or floofy with flavored syrup and a cookie on top (that was me) they have you covered. While these were our absolute favorite bakery items, just about everything we tried was great. And as I already mentioned, very inexpensive - each item was about $2 (and totally worth it!) I went to Kasalta for both breakfast and dinner and it's definitely an Ocean Park institution. Although the Mallorca was not my favorite - the lemon flavor they add did not go well with the ham and cheese in my opinion - my fried chicken dinner and eggs breakfast were very food. Dinner was fun - having the atmosphere of a friend's dinner party with the bakery all set up like a normal restaurant. They give ample portions so come hungry. read more

Everyone recommends coming to Kasalta to try their sandwiches, especially their Mallorca! I think this place got more hyped up after Obama visited in 2011. We came for breakfast and ended up having to wait about 30 min on line and 15-20 min for food. We ordered a quesito, Mallorca with ham egg and cheese, and a bacon egg and cheese sandwich. I also got an iced coffee which came in a small plastic cup with a lid. It was only a couple of sips. I need more caffeine than that! It was our first time trying the Mallorca. It was interesting with the powdered sugar! We wish the sandwiches were less oily. The plate and bottom of the bread were soaked in oil / butter. The sandwiches were definitely cheesy but they use Swiss cheese here fyi. I did enjoy the quesito. It is flaky dough with a sweet cheese filling inside. You can't go to San Juan without trying Kasalta out! read more

The tuna melt was simply tuna, onions and mayonnaise. It was delicious! The bread must be house made, it was almost like a flat baguette that was also subtly sweet. We got the cheese flan cake which was very smooth and a burst of flavor. The guava turnover was mid, the guava jam smelled like guava but the flavor wasn't there. Dropping a star because the prices are steep for the area. $15 for a sandwich that doesn't come with sides. Secondly, the lady who served us was rude and did not acknowledge us. She had braces and airpods in. The older man who helped us with the desserts was super helpful and kind. This is a great place to stop for some cafe con leche and a pastry. We actually stopped here for lunch and ordered the grilled grouper along with a side salad. My friends ordered the salmon with tostones along with rice and beans. All I know is, my grouper had so much flavor with all that juicy goodness of roasted garlic !! I also tried a screwball which is peanut butter whiskey on the rocks. YUM!! The staff were accommodating and the service was excellent. The ambiance is casual. I was ready for this experience to be a little hectic based on some reviews but I think we came at a perfect time around 5 in the afternoon on a Thursday. Ordering can be confusing for a first timer since there's a different area for sandwiches and desserts and you must pay separately as well. The far left is for sandwiches and to the right of that desserts. Specifically came based on recommendations and also because Obama came here. We shared a cubano, croquettes, and a guava pie. The cubano was good and we wanted to ask for some extra condiments but it was tough ordering as is in my elementary level Spanish. The guava pie was a little too sweet for my liking. I thought the fruit itself would have been sweet enough but it definitely reminded me of a diner pie. The croquettes were filled with fish and they were fine. I agree that Kasalta is a bit overrated. The food is fine but you can get better for your money elsewhere. It's somewhat cafeteria-style and you order coffee and pastries in one section and hot food in another. The staff will bring your order to your table. We stayed nearby and I had sent my companion for empanadas on a Saturday afternoon. They were in process of making more, which is understandable, so he went elsewhere. We came back to the city the day we left, and ended up eating lunch here because they have a parking lot and San Juan parking is terrible. And, it was on my to-try list. Even at Monday lunch, it was bustling. The food was fine. I got the grouper with rice, beans, and tostones. It worked. My friend liked his sandwich and maduros, so a sandwich might be the way to go if you visit Kasalta. My guava pastry wasn't bad. I did get some very nice pique here. So if nearby, I recommend coming in to buy that. It's the Pique Pa Ti brand. I'd probably skip in the future, but it's not bad if you do eat here. read more

I've been going to this spot for some time now and it always gets the job done. One of my favorite Breakfast spots in the San Tulce/ San Juan area. When I'm in PR I like a simple, what we call, a Spanish breakfast. Eggs over easy and Pan Sobao aka Spanish bread toasted with butter. I also like a nice cold Malta to go along with it. So that's what I got and boy was it satisfying. It is a bakery so they have a wide selection of sandwiches you can order. The bread is amazingly delicious. I'm like a breadatarian. I love bread. They also have pastries. There's plenty of tables and seats for you to sit at. To order you have to wait on a line till you get to the register and you put your order in. When it's ready you take your tray and go to your table and enjoy your meal. The place is a nice, clean basic bakery filled with locals and visitors ready to get their grub on. So that's what I did and enjoyed my breakfast. No loud music blasting in your ears. Just basic morning chatter that we all have. It's air conditioned to keep you cool as well. I also sat at the table President Obama sat at. Felt presidential for a second there. lol. Anyways, if you're looking for some good bread, sandwiches or just some breakfast or lunch, this local spot is the move. You can thank me later. Have a great one yall! read more

Ordered delivery with Uber eats. Delivery: I paid for Express delivery and received the food later than regular delivery would have been. Also, delivery person went to the wrong address. Food: ordered pancakes ($9 US). Received 2 Pancakes, no butter, no syrup. Also, ordered tortilla española ($7.5). Overall quality above average. Food was cold, I am sure due to delayed delivery. Service: requested utensils. Despite ordering two meals, only received one set of utensils. It appears that the restaurant does not know how to take care of a delivery customer's needs. Overall: Pretty forgettable and not worth a try. read more

In complete honestly the food was not bad but the service was terrible. We didn't have a singular server and people would take turns coming to our table. At the end of the meal they messed up the check and then I had them fix it ( which they did). Once I got the new check I looked at total and there was some discrepancies. I asked someone about it and they said the sandwich they charged me 19 dollars for was only 15. When I asked them to refunded me the money they told me that because I ordered bacon before cheese and not the cheese before bacon that it was a 4 dollar increase. They robbed me straight to my face and honestly the food isn't worth the hassle. 0/5 don't recommend. Go to a local spot not this tourist trap. read more

Can really only rate on desserts, we did takeout (chocolate covered strawberry and fruit tart). Went on a Sunday night, looked decently busy People were eating desserts and also dinner. We had a very disappointing experience due to the extremely slow service. We arrived around 7:30 PM and waited over an hour for our food without any updates on its status. Meanwhile, other tables around us, who were seated much later, were already receiving their appetizers. The sangria was good, but I ordered a second one without almonds and a glass of water, which took over 25 minutes. It became clear that the server forgot my order when others who arrived after I submitted my order started getting their drinks. I inquired about it, and the server said she would check, only to eventually bring me the drink with almonds--the very thing I asked to be excluded. We waited until 8:50 PM, still with no food and no communication from the server about our order. I understand if it was a busy night and food was delayed, but the lack of updates and attention to our table was unacceptable. Ultimately, we decided to leave, so I can't speak to the quality of the food. Poor service like this makes it hard to consider returning, even with good sangria. read more

A local spot that lives up to the hype! Come here for a great breakfast treat! Food: the quesito, which is essentially a a glazed cheese Danish was my favorite! Filled with the perfect amount of cream cheese, it is the perfect compliment to a cup of cafe con leche! The tembleque (which is the main reason I came here) was decadent! I loved the mix of coconut with a hint of cinnamon! The custard texture also adds so much to this dessert! The tortilla queso was so soft and on the Mallorca bread, it was the perfect mix of sweet and savory! Loved everything here! They have so many other dessert and savory options as well that I wish I came here on day 1 so I can use the other days to try some of their other options! Ambience: be prepared to be serenaded with some live music, and get into a lively discussion with some of the locals on line! Price: very reasonably priced! When visiting San Juan, Kasalta is a must see and visit! I was told I should stop in as they were well known for their coffee and fresh pastries. I was not disappointed. One visit we went in for a quick lunch and had a variety of meat empanadas, pastries, and sandwiches. Everything was great but the empanadas were THE best I had in a very long time, I got them every time we stopped in! Before heading to the airport, for an early flight we decided to grab breakfast and it didn't disappoint. They only serve hot coffee with milk (no dairy free) and it's delicious, pancakes are large are filling, oatmeal is yummy. The lines are typically long but they move quickly and very helpful staff. We visited this restaurant on 3 different occasions during our week stay in PR. Fun fact, President Obama also made a visit here and there are photos of him on the wall. I will def be back next time I'm in PR and getting more empanadas! read more

Seen this place driving by and did a quick turn into the parking lot because it looked like it had a huge selection of bakery items and it did. Sadly the pastries were not good. This is an update review from our April 2022 visit to the bakery in Ocean Park. It's a great bakery, but it's a whole lot more! First, Kasalta has a dedicated parking lot on the side of the building. Be sure to park here if you're a customer. Second, the interior is like a European cafeteria with a counter display of tempting pastries, flan, and other food items. Kasalta Bakery is ideal for breakfast and lunch sandwiches to go. We tried the mallorca sandwich (with ham and cheese) and cubano (with roast pork, pickle and mustard) to go. They use delicious sweet bread. I also enjoyed a flan dessert (which you can share with others). Finally, the mix of families, local residents, and tourists is pleasant. The only downside of Kasalta Bakery is the slow service (which can be surly depending on the server). For lunch, we were helped by a young woman who was looking at her phone and made us wait longer than needed. I had the sense that she was unhappy to work there. read more

It lives up to the hype. And if it was good enough for Obama to have breakfast here, then who am I to think otherwise? We started with a tortilla-queso sandwich on pan de mallorca. The pan de mallorca is a sweet buttery brioche doused liberally with powdered sugar, and served as an unexpectedly perfect vehicle for the creamy eggs of the tortilla omelette.
