We stopped by after lunch to try a couple of desserts. We were a little turned off by the lack of customer service. I think the staff knows that the business will come regardless because of their popularity so people would walk by us without even acknowledging us or asking if we had been helped. There was no system in place either to determine which customer to help next. We patiently waited for someone to help us and then a customer told the attendant at the counter that we were next. Without even a greeting she asked what we wanted. We ordered and she charged us and she move on. The fruit tart and chocolate covered strawberry were really good but not good enough to visit again when the service was this bad. I wanted to give this restaurant 5 stars and was excited to visit with my friends due to the popularity; however, out of all the restaurants we visited during our 4 day stay in Puerto Rico, this was the most underwhelming. I ordered a Cuban sandwich and was disappointed. It wasn't bad, but I've had better. The eggplant with beef was good. My friends ordered the chicharrones de pollo con tostones. They received very few tostones to go along with the chicken. The server we had was nice but she took forever to return to our table to see what else we needed. Sadly, as other reviews have noted, the staff here are terribly rude. We experienced this ourselves. If you do not look like a local, you will not be seated by the waitstaff. You can order at the counter with significant difficulty, but no one will look you in the eye. We speak decent Spanish and consider ourselves polite, unobtrusive tourists but that doesn't matter here. If you are a tourist, avoid this establishment. Bad service, such a bad experience, and all 3 of our items weren't even worth it. Food was bad; you aren't missing out by skipping this one. Kasalta is a fantastic bakery and breakfast joint. Admittedly, it took us a few moments to sort ourselves out, between (1) the bountiful food options, (2) the multiple counters, and (3) our very weak Spanish-skills. Helpful advice our fellow B-grade Spanish, non-native speakers: walk all the way to the back and stand in *that* line (in front of the covered dishes). That's the line to order breakfast. Helpful advice for literally everyone on the planet: get the mallorca breakfast sandwich. (Pronounced: MY-orca, as in "my killer whale"). The Mallorca is a breakfast sandwich with melty white cheese, layered fried egg (that actually tastes like fresh eggs), and ham. It's served on a fluffy sweet roll and dappled with powdered sugar. It checks all the boxes for sweet, savory, and utterly delightful. We also ordered a coffee and an espresso ("cafe con leche" and "espresso con leche") that were decent, albeit small. I typically need at least 16 oz to be anything close to functional, but this is vacation, after all. Who needs to be functional? We didn't get pastries, but there is a huge assortment and they all look excellent. We also observed some patrons eating a meaty chicken soup, which, apparently, functions as a miraculous hangover cure. We didn't try it but it seemed worth noting. read more

I have been in here twice. The first time it was to pick up a to go dessert, place was packed. We came back to eat dinner on a Saturday evening, place was empty. Weird vibe. Also, so many servers and still bad service. No need for us to come back, there is nothing you are missing out on here. Found this place after the original place we wanted to go to was crazy slammed for reservations. I called them up and asked if they can take a party of 10 last minute and they say they could. It was a short, distant walk from Uno Beach House. We had a large party with us that day. So what you do is when you walk in they have a very long counter. The first portion is all charcuterie foods and stuffs. The second section is all desserts at the very end is where they take sandwich orders and soup orders. They have two type of menus there, one in the native tongue language, but they also have a smaller menu that tells you what it is in English. We all ordered our food and they put it on little food trays, and then we got to take it to our table and sat down. At the end of the meal, my husband ended up going back to get some of the different aged prosciutto because that is what they're known for down here. I got a mortadella sandwich. My husband got a turkey sandwich. It was all delicious the soup that came with it was super tasty. We know someone else at our table ordered a seafood paella. We all individually got up and went through the desserts, and each got something, but the caramel roll was delicious. I think this place also was known for President Obama, having to dine there when they were visiting many years ago. It's not a bad bakery, It is one of the more well-known ones and that is much older in the area so definitely check it out. There's definitely something for everybody there. read more

This shop has been riding on Obama's name for the past 10 years and they probably did a good job in helping with local employment, but inside it's a zoo! So don't get your hopes up, especially if you are comparing it to any fine bakery in a big city. First of all, they sell everything inside, from pastry to candy to sandwiches and soup and to gifts, but the ordering system is super confusing! I literally stood next to a group of people for 15 minutes to find out they are not in the order line but waiting for their food. Then if you want pastry, you order from a different cashier than the sandwich/coffee cashier but they are all behind a long line of counters. For quesitos, which is cream cheese rolls, you can order from pastry or sandwich places, super confusing! Onto the food, it's ok but nothing splendid, it's greasy and stuffy, not the light kind of pastry. The sandwiches look pathetic. Saw this place pop up a few times when I was planning the trip to PR. We were staying in Condado and Kasalta was close enough to walk (about a 20 min walk). I heard good things about their pastries! We'd gotten coffee earlier, but wanted to grab some things for breakfast. You could tell this place was popular and on a Sunday morning there was a nice mix of locals and tourists. There was a line of cars waiting to pull into the parking lot and later as we were eating a cop showed up to help direct traffic. When you walk in there we're two lines, once for the food like sandwiches and another for the pastries. The pastry line was much smaller, which only two people in line compared to the 10 to 15 person line at the other end of the shop. We ordered a chocolate chip cheesecake, a café con leche, and a flan to go. The coffee was good, and better than the one we picked up on the way. And my partner loves cheesecake and really Ed enjoyed the chocolate piece he got. Lastly, even though it's quite a big space tables fill up fast. I ended up grabbing a seat and we shared a table with another party of two, which was fine with us, but something to keep in mind. The customer service is terrific. My son and I visited Kasalta to get some delicious pastries and they did not disappoint. The vanilla flan was extraordinary, the fruit tarts had a delicious pastry cream, and great bread. My son got a hot chocolate and dropped it when we left. I came here for lunch and ordered the Lomo de cerdo a la plancha (the lunch special) it wasn't terrible but the portions where very very small and expensive. The little pieces of deli sliced pork (not even exaggerating) on the grill with a bunch of cooked garlic. I ordered with Salad and it was just plain lettuce and tomato with soggy oily dressing. I'd suggest staying on the dry and backed pastries rather than the more creamy ones, we had the impression that Kasalta gave its best with them. I was disappointed with my breakfast today. I went with the ham and cheese scrambled egg breakfast. It came with buttered toast. I added onions and a side of bacon. The bacon was nice and crispy but the scramble fell flat. Lately we have been going to Panadería Genesis in Guaynabo. They have an excellent scrambled egg breakfast. This one fell short by miles. I still think they make good tapas, sandwiches, and coffee, but the scrambled egg is a hard pass for me. read more

This place was one block away from the amazing Dream Inn I was staying at in San Juan, so I made it a point to visit for breakfast and see what all the hype was about. While I'm not sure I'd consider it "hype-worthy," it's a solid place. You order at the counter and it's self-seating. You leave your tray at the table when you're done. I got the eggs and ham (with toast) and while it was great, I did think $10 is a bit steep for that for a quick service place like this. I also got a chocolate chip brownie to go.
