I came here on a Saturday around lunch with my family. We all ordered bento lunch boxes and also tried a deep fried roll. The customer service was actually very good. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed, which I really appreciated. Unfortunately the food itself was not great. The beef in the bento box was very chewy and the sushi just was not the best. The deep fried roll was okay but nothing special. Overall the quality of the food did not match the service. The portions of salmon on the current chirashi bowl is very comparable with last years, their portions have decreased significantly but increase in price, would not recommend until either their price decreases or their portions increase. Every piece of fish was soft, buttery, and flavorful. The edamame was also very tasty. It was more than enough food for the four of us to walk out feeling satisfied, with an incredibly cheap price tag for dinner these days (~$20/person). Service was also very good, our waitress graciously provided replacement utensils and an extra box for our group when we accidentally broke them. After placing a takeout order and driving home to Modesto, I discovered that both the white rice and miso soup were missing from my bento box order. Hey Sushi Cuisine, Ok confession, for a while I didn't think all that highly of you, just thought you were pretty average. I'm sorry!! But I always keep in mind that after living for decades in the bay area, I know my tastes are unfairly spoiled. Now that many months have passed and I've gone a few times, I definitely would recommend you for those in the area mainly for one reason. Those lunch bentos. They are an excellent deal for what you get. I say this hoping I don't hype it up and you end up raising the prices, but I think it's the best lunch deal in town (yes, teriyaki don is cheaper but their food is much poorer in quality). I usually get Chicken Katsu with you (not on menu, but same as tonkatsu). All those extra items (tempura, ca roll, etc) for that price isn't bad at all! I've tried other items like lion king, shrimp tempura, crazy horse, dragon roll, udon and others. They are all decent if you want your sushi fix. People just need to keep in mind we are way out here in Merced, not next to the ocean so judge the quality accordingly. If people want super high-end stuff go drive to the bay, if they want a solid sushi fix, then you are the place to go. So keep up the good work, don't raise your prices and people will keep coming! read more

For a spot in the Central Valley, specifically Merced..... this place is pretty decent! I came when restaurants have started slowly opening during pandemic COVID-19 times and there was a waitlist to dine-in. This is due to the seating arrangements where tables in between are "closed" in order to follow recommended CDC guidelines to social distance. My friend and I only waited about 30 minutes to get seated at a table. Upon looking at the menu, they don't have a vast variety of selection in regards to rolls and the pricing is pretty much standard compared to other sushi restaurants. Typically in my perspective.... I try to avoid rolls that have cream cheese and imitation crab in the center (I believe this is a waste of stomach space and not worth in $$). So at the end of an extensive search/read, we ordered the Titanic roll, Sunset roll, Country roll, and Lion King roll. All the rolls we tried were different in it's own way (ordered this way on purpose) and were pleasantly tasty! The Sunset roll had a good variety of fish and tasted very fresh along with the Lion King roll which had baked salmon on top giving it a warm, texture to your palette. I would say the least favorite was the Country roll as it just tasted very overwhelming with a lot going on. The soft shell crab was a nice touch but on top was too much sauce and the creamy texture from the eel and avocado didn't do this roll justice. Overall, very pleased with this place and if I am ever in the area again this would be the place to go for sushi! read more

The Dragon roll has the one of my favorite rolls to eat at Sushi Cuisine! Service was quick and the food came out in a timely manner. The servers were attentive to anything that we needed help with. Came here tonight for our anniversary dinner , we were craving sushi. I had the chicken teriyaki dinner plate with shrimp tempura and a red dragon roll. My husband had the sashimi deluxe plate and for app we had calamari and meals came with salad and soup. Every single bit of our meal was fresh and delicious. Saw this restaurant while going to Raleys one day and decided to try it out. The first time we went for lunch and the bento boxes were great. Good bang for their buck and left us satisfied at the end of the meal. The service was also pretty fast. The second time we went it was for dinner with friends and our experience wasn't very good. We ordered a decent amount of rolls which were mediocre for the price and at the end of the night we all had food poisoning. A long overdue review buuut..Honestly, this place is really good! It's not top notch sushi, but it's delicious and affordable! This was my favorite sushi spot in Merced and I would come here so often too! Since it's located on G street it is super convenient to just take the city bus or even the CatTraks. There's Raley's nearby, Subway, Wells Fargo and even a Chinese restaurant. However, if you'd like to drive there instead, there is a parking lot with plenty of space. I love the customer service here and the variety they have from donburi, sashimi, cooked rolls, raw rolls, hand rolls, baked and fried rolls. They also have rice dishes, tempura, udon, sushi boats and more! One of my all time favorites is the Nabeyaki Udon! It's such a big portion and they don't skimp out on the veggies or the chicken. The broth of the Nabeyaki udon is really good! It doesn't taste like MSG. They use actual udon noodles here and they do NOT overcook the noods. Some sushi restaurants actually have used egg noodles or chow mein noodles for their Udon and I find that appalling. The ingredients here are fresh and the teppanyaki steak is numb too! I love the aroma of gives off right when they bring it out to you and it's still sizzling. Also, kudos for them providing tea, no extra charge. I gotta have my sushi with some nice hot tea! I do want to point out that Sushi Cuisine does close at 2:30pm and then opens again at 5:00pm for dinner. So if you're craving sushi, make sure to time it right! Some days it does get pretty packed, but not to the point where I would need to make reservations. Another thing I love about this place is that I always find UC Merced students chilling here, eating with their friends and/or family. It's a great spot I must say. I even sometimes run into my friends there! I do lowkey miss when this used to be Mel's Cafe Haha. As you might be wondering, why knock down 1 star? While the ingredients are fresh, I am a huge fan of salmon sashimi. Sashimi needs to be extra fresh! I prefer mine to be thick cut and fatty. How you can tell salmon is fresh is the color, texture and the lines of fat. It wasn't very fatty, nor bright orange here. The cuts are also a little thin to my liking. read more

Dined in at Sushi Cuisine on 4/1/23 in Merced, Ca. We arrived early around 11ish when they opened and got seated. We are visiting a friend who never had Japanese food so we wanted to introduce him to sushi. We ordered bento boxes, 2 tempura with chicken teriyaki, 3 beef teriyaki, 1 chicken teriyaki and udon. We also ordered the spider roll. Everything was good. The prices were affordable. They offered lunch menu as well. The place was small but was able to accommodate our party of 6 comfortably. We liked the teriyaki sauce and the char on the meats. The sushi was good as well. Definitely satisfied our cravings for Japanese food. The service was great. Everyone was very friendly and informative. Pat was an awesome server. She was patient with all of our orders and questions. She was attentive and personable and engaging. They are located in a big plaza with plenty of parking spaces. Definitely worth checking if you are in the area and craving good Japanese food!
