Got the real runaround from these people. I called and left a message hoping for a simple quote for landscape design. They took days to call back and left a message. When I tried to call back the guy didn't have his voicemail set up. I called the main company line again and left another message. Days go by again and they text me an online form to fill out, with tons of questions that don't apply to this job. I fill it out but asked the guy by text if he can simply tell me what they charge for landscape designs. No response to my question, but I get an email days later saying they are not taking on jobs for several months. What a waste of time! read more

OUTRAGEOUS PRICES! Do not entertain using this company! Please do not unless money means absolutely nothing to you. After about a $4000 investment in plans they had the audacity to quote a project for a 1500 sq foot front yard at $148,000. Yes, you read that correctly. It is not that I am cheap, in fact, I did spend $197,000 doing the backyard (with another contractor) which included a whole pool redo, new hot tub, BBQ, pergola etc.. Kate Anne Designs however, was doing no major structural changes. Just what I would consider basic stuff - replacing driveway, placing a small retaining wall with driveway gate. Xeriscaping the small front yard, two yard gates and a front porch redo. Even if the wall cost $50,000 and the driveway $15,000 - that leaves $83,000 for front yard xeriscaping - two olive trees, ficus trees, artificial turf, decorative rock, pavers etc. Not sure what the quality would be like, I have no reason to believe it would be bad. They were pleasant and professional. They did say at the outset that they do jobs that are billed over $50,000 - which was ok with me, just not $98,000 over $50,000 for a small front yard - everyone I have shared this with is shocked, don't want you to be shocked either :) read more

Almost everyone has that one part of the house that never gets used. For us, it was always the backyard. However, after years of avoiding the dead grass and concrete that made up our backyard, we finally decided to do something about it. Enter Ryan and Kate. We had a vague idea about what we wanted. Lights. Grass. A space that can be functional and aesthetically appealing. Ryan and Kate took it from there. They had a vision. They drew up plans. And it was all so much better than we could have dreamed up ourselves. More importantly, they made the entire process effortless, taking care of permits and third-party contractors, and any other obstacle that came our way. Ryan was constantly e-mailing, checking in, making sure we always knew where things were at and what was going on. Kate would regularly send us photos of plants and greenery she was considering, walking us through the differences when it all looked the same to us. Before we knew it, the work was done. Or so we thought. The two of them were so fastidious with details, they were unable to consider the job truly finished until they were satisfied that everything was...perfect. And it was. Ryan and Kate absolutely transformed our backyard. It was like one of those HGTV home makeover shows. Complete with a deck, pergola, lights, grass, flowers, and benches...the back of our house went from an area we warned our kids to stay away from, to an outdoor living space where we now spend a majority of our time. We couldn't recommend Ryan and Kate strongly enough. They are visionaries. Professionals. OCD-like in their attention to details. And now that we've had time to enjoy the fruits of their labor, we're strongly considering redoing the front yard. There's no question as to who we'll call. read more

It's hard to come to decisions on such a large scale and this is where Kate and her team shines. Kate listens to what you have to say, and gets to know your likes and dislikes. She presents you with very thorough and visually Professional blueprints to look over. Kate is more than willing to adjust your plans to your needs, until you are ready to get started. Her team is professional and very knowledgeable from materials to plant variations. The job took as long as they said it would and it was not a disruption to our family's schedule at all. It has been almost a year since Kate Anne Designs finished the landscaping project, and I can honestly say that hiring Kate and her husband Ryan was a very expensive mistake. I wanted to take some time to let things settle and really see if I felt differently well after the dust settled and everything had a chance to take root, and I can honestly say that it is worse. When Ryan originally visited, he talked about decks all over and thought the price for hardscape/landscape would run around $80K-$100K. Then when I sat down to do the designs with Kate, she said that she recommended minimal decking because it was way more expensive. We settled on brick because of what I like and the costs. But when they gave me the price tag after that, it was $125+K and didn't include everything. But I thought, okay, this is more expensive but I will take a shot. (I eliminated a few things for cost bringing it down to $120+K but with the missing elements and developments, pots, fountain, etc., it actually came out to $135+K). That is a far cry from what was originally "estimated" with the lure of more expensive hardscape. I assume that was to get me tied into the project and, well, it worked. Shame on me. Not long after the work began, their team disappeared (they only had two small Ring-type cameras that didn't cover the area to "watch" some of the process). I had never worked with a design team before (just contractors directly) so I rolled with it. So towards the end, I told them that I felt like they had left me alone with the project to deal with it myself. Not once did they check in with me to make sure I was okay or good with things or to see if there were any issues on my end. Nothing. They ended up claiming it was because of COVID, but they disappeared months before the lockdown (and yet the construction team did not). By the time the pandemic hit, they were on finishing touches (which the contractor finished with no delay). So I was responsible for managing the project and the issues, which I was not equipped to do. The contractor they hired, however, was always very nice, and I appreciated him and his team greatly. Ryan also blamed other things on me that were nonsensical things to blame on the client (he and his team were supposed to be in charge of fielding and taking care of the issues - they designed the project and hired the workers). But I came to realize that given how he lashed out with misrepresentations and falsehoods, this was not the first CYA list of crazy that he had sent to a client. So I just paid them in full to go away in the end. Since then I have had to pay an additional $15K so far to manage the many issues I have had with the design (including issues with items that were dangerously not to code). Fortunately, that money has actually covered a lot, which demonstrates, in part, how much I overpaid. Kate and Ryan did not anticipate what turned out to be some pretty clear issues. Also, some of it just looks really bad (as others have also pointed out) so making plans to change those areas. So I am currently at $145K for what I have been told by several contractors now should have been under $100K and still working on fixing issues. An expensive lesson, but a lesson nonetheless. I am giving two stars, though, because Kate had a few ideas I like that I would say were unique to her vision and she should be credited for those. Otherwise, either look elsewhere if you have a big project or learn to be a really high maintenance and demanding client and know what you are doing before you go into the process. read more

It's been well over a year since Kate Anne Designs (Kate & Ryan) completed a full overhaul on our front and side yard. We wanted a place where our little boys could run/play/ride bikes, but also something that felt welcoming and like adults still lived here. We ended up with new landscaping, a new driveway, a new front porch, an additional parking spot, and new turf (both real and artificial).The level of detail, thoughtful design and incredibly tasteful choices have given us a front yard that we absolutely LOVE. We worked with Kate and Ryan on a redesign of our backyard. We began with a giant concrete jungle, and Kate had the vision to transform it into a warm living space. Ryan visited first, and was honest, upfront, and obviously an expert in this space. He listened to our needs and came up with some great suggestions that we had never thought of, pointing out ways to make our small backyard feel bigger. Kate is an expert in landscape design, plant selection, and her design background allowed her to help us plan the total vision- down to helping us to pick our new furniture and accessories! They were great to work with. Flexible and responsive, and their head contractor was amazing-- always on time, accommodated all our needs, answered our questions and made adjustments when we asked. We had a few unexpected snafus (who doesn't?), but Kate and Ryan always found the solution before we could ask. Our project came in exactly on budget and everyone went above and beyond to make sure every last detail was perfect. We now have a backyard that we- and our friends- want to hang out in all the time! This company really needs to work on communication skills with potential clients. I reached out to them twice for a consultation because I really liked what I saw on the website. The first time I was told Kate would be out of town for a few months and she referred me to a competitor. I was in no rush and decided to wait on my outdoor needs. Now that summer is in full swing, I see what our needs are outdoors more easily and decided to start my search again. I reached out again and was told that they were booked for several months. Thats it. It was annoying because I gave no indication of my timeline. Maybe I could have waited??? We had a barren mess for a backyard. Then we met Kate. Now we have a beautiful oasis. It was actually more involved than that, but Kate made it seem easy. She first produced a design that was almost perfect. Then she worked with us to make adjustments that incorporated ideas we imagined but were not able to express clearly. She's like that, able to enumerate ideas capturing the essence of what you are imaging. She also knows plants and color. She took several trips to nurseries to show us what she had in mind. She very much included us in the decision-making process, but in the end we relied heavily on her judgement. We are glad we did. Finally, she stays in touch. We were on a mission to get rid of the grass in our front yard, one due to the cost of watering it and two because of the California drought. We first met with Kate and she was amazing, we felt really safe and appreciated the time that she spent with us explaining how she works. She was happy to go with us to multiple nurseries in our area and really knew about drought tolerant plants that would work in our climate zone. Kate and Ryan spearheaded our total yard re-do this past July. We were on a strict budget and even stricter timeline and they delivered way, way more than we could have ever hoped. Our front and back yard hadn't been touched in over 20 years and Kate came in with some amazing, creative ideas while included some of the original elements that we wanted to keep. They produced the plans quickly and were so flexible and patient with the revisions we suggested. Kate is amazing! She is calm, talented, honest, friendly, communicative, and easy to work with. We did a total backyard redo. We had met with a bunch of designers, all of whom didn't quite listen to what we wanted and instead tried to give us a plan that aligned with their style, not ours. Don't get me wrong, Kate has style and is not afraid to speak up when she thinks something won't work or won't look good. But from moment one, she listened to what we wanted and then came up with a beautiful design that incorporated all of it. Even when we had to make some changes due to budgetary reasons, she rolled with it. The contractor and installers that did the work were professional beyond belief. Friendly, respectful, and skilled. And any time we had a question, Kate responded immediately via email, text, or phone. Another thing: she writes everything down. We've worked with people in the past who forget what was discussed or decisions that were made, and it gets frustrating when things keep not getting done. Not with Kate. We talked to a handful of landscapers, received quotes from a few, but there was something really special about Kate and Ryan from the beginning. They just seemed to care more than other people, and right off the bat they had the right mix of listening to what we wanted and also suggesting new ideas. That was really important to me, since I am far from being any sort of landscaping expert -- I wanted to work with someone who took my vision and really blew me away with ideas. I sent Kate photos of things I liked, went for a walk with her to show her neighbors' yards that stood out to me, and she put together a beautiful mix of plants, and we worked back and forth to decide what to do. They are highly professional, with an awesome project manager who came to take measurements and oversee most of the daily work. They were also really good at guiding us in how to allocate our budget. Ours was not the world's largest or most glamorous project, but basically they redid our driveway from asphalt to beautiful charcoal colored pavers, redid all of the tile on the front steps and pass-through between the house and garage, redid four large front planters (with a cool mix of plants that grow up and plants that grow wide, in a beautiful color palette), added a row of succulents as a point of interest between the driveway and the main planter, put jasmine vines on the side of the garage, planted rows of ficus trees to line the property, and used these gorgeous slate chips in all of the planters to really pull the look together. Oh, and they put outdoor lighting in, with the infrastructure now there so we could potentially add more lights, but it looks pretty flawless the way it is. Redoing a driveway is really no small feat, what with sewer lines and making sure water is flowing to the drains and so on, and their subcontractors were awesome. I don't even think this review is doing them justice -- they are easy to work with, incredibly kind and warm, very communicative, and made everything really easy. We still have things we want to do in the backyard, and plan on working with them again when we decide to tackle that project. I can't say enough good things -- the curb appeal of our house is exactly what we wanted, and it's like a zen haven. Thanks, Kate and Ryan!! read more

I used Kate and Ryan to design and redo both my front and back yards. Kate is very professional and is very responsive and quick to get the work done. She was patient with me and understood exactly the look and feel of the yard that I was going for. When I had input, she took it and applied it to the redesign. The back yard was done with low maintenance and drought resistant plants and included some hardscape including a large gas fire pit and waterfall. The hardscape and gardening was done by Jesus Frausto and team. The were pleasant to work with, easy to communicate with, very professional and extremely attentive to every minor detail. Just finished a total back yard project with pool and landscaping. Kate handled the landscaping and she absolutely exceeded our expectations on all levels. Kate is extraordinarily competent and passionate about what she does. She worked closely with us in designing the overall look. Then, when it came time to putting those plans into motion, Kate and her crew were incredibly efficient and professional. She was in constant contact with us throughout the process and, maybe more important, patient with us as well when we'd call with various questions. The end result is that with Kate's eye and ability we were able to build our own small oasis right outside our back door. It's only been a couple of weeks but everyone who has stopped has said the same two things.. "it looks like a resort back here" and "Can I have Kate's number?" I have to say it again, Kate is simply delightful and joy to work with. You are most likely reading this because you're doing your due diligence before your own project. Thats smart.
